Contrary to popular opinion, golf can be a pretty physically demanding sport. Sure, it's not like running a marathon, but a four-mile walk in hot temperatures while lugging a bag and full set of clubs on your back is pretty draining. So you need to find ways of preserving energy as much as possible. A pair of the most comfortable golf shoes helps, but the easiest way to relieve the strain on the body is to invest in a golf cart/trolley, which will help store your clubs and bag safely and securely whilst you tackle the fairways.
With the purchase of a trolley you will also need a cart bag to go with it, as a stand or pencil bag isn't ideally suited to sitting on a cart. Besides, with a cart bag you have tons more storage for useful things like extra drinks and food, waterproofs and maybe a spare pair of shoes. As well as being larger and offering more storage, cart bags are also designed to be more long-lasting than the best golf stand bags and they fit on the trolley more securely.
We tested over 30 golf bags last year, some of which have been deemed worthy of a place in this guide. There was plenty of the competition for the top pick too, but with a whopping five star review it was hard not to give it to Motocaddy's Protekta bag for a number of reasons, most notably the high quality build and waterproof material.
After testing a lot of different models, and we mean A LOT, we have collated the top performing models into this guide to help you decide which is the cart bag for you. Additionally, if you are after a bag that is more specific to your golf game, then why not also check out our guides on the best lightweight golf bags, the best waterproof golf bags and the best push carts.

With 13 pockets to choose from, you can pack whatever you want to bring onto the golf course with the C-130 bag from Sun Mountain.
The Vessel Prime 2.0 Staff bag is absolutely outstanding. The materials used, clever design, and stunning aesthetic all go into making up one of the most luxurious golf bags imaginable.
A great looking and highly functional cart bag with the unique benefit of a silencer top that individually protects each club for easy access and without noise.
A highly functional cart bag, the Nero offers a premium finish and maintains the high-quality performance we have experienced with the brands golf carts.
One of the best hybrid stand bags we’ve tested, it excels both as a stand and cart bag, offering a premium, reliable and lightweight build. It’s ideal for golfers who switch between carrying and using a trolley but want just one bag.

The Dry Series is highly functional in terms of its storage options, it's exceptional in wet weather, and it has an incredibly lightweight design.
Very much a bag for the golfer who errs on the side of caution over what they take with them out on the course. There really is space for everything and it's waterproof too.
This cart bag is really impressive. Lightweight and easy to hook in and out of the car and we think it is extremely practical when it comes to pocket formation.

Our top pick is the Motocaddy Protekta Cart Bag, which earned a prestigious five-star review during our testing. It’s a premium golf bag that keeps your clubs secure while also ensuring your valuables stay safe and dry, thanks to the high-quality waterproof materials and zips which provided real peace of mind out on the course. While some cart bags can be on the heavier side, this excellent option weighs just 3.1kg, making it one of the best lightweight golf bags available.
One area we place a lot of importance on with cart bags is storage. Given that you’re likely using a golf buggy or have one of the best push carts or best electric golf trolleys complimenting it, having plenty of storage is key. This bag really impressed us in that regard, offering nine pockets in total, including two valuables pockets and two full-length side pockets. There’s more than enough room for the best golf waterproofs, accessories and even a couple of bottles of water in the cooler pocket.
Motocaddy bags are designed to work seamlessly with the brand’s own trolleys, as they’re tailored for a perfect fit. We tested it with the Motocaddy M7 GPS Electric Trolley and found the Easi-lock base worked brilliantly, removing much of the hassle usually involved with securing a bag in place. The 15-way top divider is another standout feature, with nine dedicated iron slots that help prevent clubs from clashing together while also reducing noise. As someone who values keeping clubs in top condition, this was a feature I really appreciated during testing.

The C-130 from Sun Mountain has been the company’s best seller for over two decades and remains one of the most popular cart bags of all time. While it’s designed primarily for golfers who use a buggy, it also fits perfectly onto a push cart, making it a very versatile option.
In my view, there’s no such thing as too much storage in a cart bag, and Sun Mountain clearly agrees. The C-130 offers a 14-way divider with a dedicated slot for oversized putters, giving your clubs plenty of space and organisation. It also features 13 pockets in total, including two apparel pockets that proved particularly useful during testing in both sunny and rainy conditions. There’s also a ventilated cooler pocket for drinks, two velour-lined valuables pockets (one of which is water-resistant) as well as a magnetic pocket designed specifically for a rangefinder. It really feels like every detail has been considered.
Ease of use is another standout feature. The C-130 includes Sun Mountain’s Smart Strap system, which keeps the bag secure on a trolley while still allowing easy access to all pockets. It also comes with a matching waterproof hood and is available in a wide range of colours, making it one of the best Sun Mountain golf bags currently on the market.

Vessel has supplied bags to many of the world’s top players, contributing to numerous PGA Tour and major championship victories, often without much fanfare. We recently had the chance to test the Vessel Prime 2.0 Staff bag, famously used by Tiger Woods, and came away hugely impressed.
This is arguably one of the coolest golf bags we tested in 2024 and will make you feel like a Tour pro even in your local weekend competition. The design is clean and understated, with a sleek yet premium aesthetic. The synthetic leather is soft and smooth to the touch, and handling the bag gives off the same high-end feel you’d expect from a luxury car.
During testing in wet conditions, the waterproof zips performed exceptionally well, keeping everything protected from the rain. The leather pockets further enhance the premium feel, while the valuables pockets are lined with a soft antimicrobial material that not only feels great but also keeps your belongings safe, dry and hygienic.

Ogio All Elements Silencer Cart Bag

We’ve always liked OGIO golf bags for their bold, innovative designs that really stand out, such as the blue floral print shown above. But it’s not just about looks, as the All Elements Silencer also delivers strong performance. The 14-way top locks each club into place, reducing movement and eliminating noise.
As you’d expect from OGIO, the bag feels stable and well built. While it only features six pockets, fewer than some others on this list, they’re deep and spacious enough to provide plenty of storage. The large apparel pockets, valuables pocket and cooler pocket all proved more than sufficient during testing and the waterproof construction offered added peace of mind when the rain set in.
There are also several thoughtful features that stood out, including easy-to-use zip pullers, secure lock-down straps for use on a cart and a neatly tucked-away shoulder strap. The straps kept the bag firmly in place on both an electric trolley and a buggy, while the shoulder strap came in handy in the car park. Overall, it strikes a nice balance between style and function, backed by a brand known for quality.

Stewart Golf has been producing some of the best remote electric trolleys and best push carts for the best part of a decade, and while the brand has previously explored mid-market cart bags, the Nero marks its first premium cart bag offering.
Designed to pair seamlessly with Stewart trolleys, we tested the Nero on the Stewart Vertx Remote and immediately noticed its strong visual appeal. The all-black finish looks sleek and pairs perfectly with the trolley, while the durable construction held up well in poor weather without picking up marks or scratches. Made from tour-grade synthetic leather, it feels soft to the touch, looks premium and is easy to wipe clean.
There are nine pockets in total, including a large insulated front pocket, two plush velour-lined valuables pockets and a magnetic front pocket that’s ideal for a rangefinder. Having tested many cart bags over the years, cooler pockets can often be overlooked but that’s not the case here, with drinks staying nicely chilled and refreshing throughout multiple rounds.

Best hybrid

Reasons to avoid
Hybrid stand bags are becoming increasingly popular, offering a versatile option for golfers who split their time between carrying and using a trolley or cart. In simple terms, a hybrid bag is designed to perform both roles effectively, removing the need to invest in separate stand and cart bags. They remain a fairly niche category, best suited to golfers who primarily use a trolley but still want the flexibility to carry on occasion. Among the options tested, Sun Mountain’s latest model stands out as one of the few that combines this versatility with a lightweight and fully waterproof build.
The seams are fully taped and sealed, while the fabric is treated on both sides for added water resistance. Another standout feature is the VLO technology, which reinforces the area where the trolley handle attaches. While many hybrid bags lower the stand mechanism to improve cart compatibility, few strengthen this high-stress area to the same extent, resulting in a more secure and durable fit on a trolley.
When used as a carry bag it performs just as well. It’s relatively lightweight for this category and the well-padded straps and hip pad make it comfortable over a full round. The soft materials reduce strain on the shoulders and prevent rubbing against the back, enhancing the overall carrying experience. While it sits at a premium price point, the combination of excellent waterproofing, thoughtful design and strong build quality makes it a worthwhile investment for golfers who play regularly in all conditions.

The black and navy Motocaddy Cart Series Bag mounted on a trolley on the golf course

The Motocaddy Dry Series has been revamped in recent years and now sits firmly at the premium end of the range. It combines a stylish design with full waterproof protection and excellent usability, making it one of the standout cart bags we’ve tested. Weighing around six lbs, it’s impressively light for a fully waterproof bag and also comes with a rain hood for added protection.
It’s packed with practical features including 14 full-length dividers that help prevent clubs from jamming together, a common frustration with many golf bags. This makes organizing your set much easier and improves overall usability on the course.
Storage is another strong point, with nine pockets providing plenty of space for golf balls, extra layers and other essentials. There’s also a generously sized insulated food and drink pocket, while the heat-sealed zips ensure everything stays protected from the elements. It’s clear Motocaddy has paid attention to the finer details throughout.

With the ‘Aqua’ name, you’d expect this bag to be fully waterproof, and the Aqua Sport 360 certainly delivers. It’s one of best waterproof golf bags we’ve tested, offering strong all-round performance in wet conditions.
Despite its generous size and storage, which can often make cart bags bulky and difficult to handle, Big Max has managed to keep this model lightweight and easy to manoeuvre. During testing, it performed brilliantly in heavy rain, reinforcing its credentials as a reliable waterproof option. When paired with the right push cart or electric trolley many of the rear pockets remain accessible, as we found when using a Big Max trolley. There was plenty of room for drinks and snacks, and the double grab handle proved particularly useful when loading and unloading the bag.
Storage is well thought out throughout. In addition to space for refreshments, there’s an oversized putter well that accommodates larger grips, while the 14-way divider is lined with soft materials to protect clubs and prevent crowding.

The MacGregor 15-Series Water Resistant Cart Bag in testing

While there are certainly more eye-catching cart bags available, the MacGregor 15-Series Water Resistant Cart Bag stands out as one of the most practical and best value options. Cart bags can often come with a premium price tag, so it’s always worth highlighting a model that delivers strong performance without breaking the bank and this is exactly what MacGregor offers here.
During testing we found it to be lightweight and easy to use, helped by two over-moulded handles at the top that make it simple to move around, whether at home or on a trolley. It’s worth noting this is a showerproof rather than fully waterproof bag so it’s better suited to lighter rain, although the water-resistant zips should still help keep valuables protected.
One of the standout features is the 15 full-length dividers which make accessing clubs easy and eliminate the issue of jamming. They’re also lined and cushioned, helping to protect graphite shafts over uneven terrain. We also particularly liked the rubberised “putter pit” which securely accommodates modern putters with larger grips, a feature that’s not always included but makes a real difference in use.

How we test golf bags
Our testing process for all golf gear, including bags, is both thorough and detailed. If we say we’ve reviewed a product then you can be confident it has been used extensively on the golf course and tested in a range of conditions. We also make a point of using every feature on the bag, so for example, if a valuables pocket claims to be waterproof, we’ll test that claim directly.
We test golf bags over multiple rounds, across different days and course types, to ensure the fairest possible assessment. When it comes to waterproof models in particular, we actively test them in poor weather to see if they truly deliver on their promises. Because we test so much equipment at Golf Monthly, bags often see even more use as they’re carried while testing clubs, shoes, rangefinders and more.
We aim to put every feature through its paces, whether that’s a specific divider system, magnetic valuables pocket or the comfort of a shoulder strap. This helps us provide well-rounded, informative reviews and buying advice. It’s also important to stress that manufacturers cannot pay for a positive review. Our team is made up of golfers of varying ages and abilities, many of whom are regular club players, and we pride ourselves on offering honest, impartial advice to help readers make informed decisions as the cost of golf equipment continues to rise.
How to choose a golf bag
Let's look into the several factors you need to think about when buying a golf bag.
Bag Type - The main question is simple: what type of bag do you actually need? Do you carry your clubs or use a trolley or buggy? If you’re reading this guide, chances are you’re leaning towards a cart bag, but it’s still worth thinking about what suits your game best. If you occasionally carry your bag then a cart bag may not be the right fit, as they can be cumbersome to walk with, even if stand bags aren’t always ideal on a trolley either.
Stand bags are built for golfers who prefer to carry. As a result, comfort and weight are key considerations, along with durability and waterproofing. The main drawbacks are that they require more effort to use and generally offer less storage than cart bags. That said, some modern stand bags are versatile enough to work on a trolley if needed.
Cart bags, on the other hand, are designed specifically for use with trolleys or buggies. They’re easy to lift, stable when mounted and typically offer far more storage for accessories, clothing and valuables. Because of this added space and functionality, they tend to be larger and bulkier, whereas stand bags provide greater freedom and mobility.
Storage - Storage is an important factor in modern golf, as a good bag needs to accommodate a wide range of items. Cart bags typically feature larger and more numerous pockets, as space and weight are less of a concern when they’re used on a trolley. Stand bags by comparison are usually more compact and designed to carry just the essentials.
It’s worth considering how much gear you like to bring to the course as some models are built to carry everything you might need, while others focus on simplicity with fewer storage options.
Waterproofing - If you live or golf somewhere that gets a lot of rain then this is a no-brainer really. You simply must have a bag that offers protection from the rain. If you live somewhere with nice weather all year round then then this won't be as important and shower resistant bags will do the job.
Weight - Weight is an important factor across all types of golf bag. Stand bags in particular need to be lightweight as they’re carried over the shoulders for an entire round, while cart bags should also be manageable enough to move easily from the car to the trolley and around the course. That said, most brands now focus on lightweight designs, as no golfer wants to deal with a heavy bag.
Looks - How do you want your golf bag to look? Brands often try their best to create design aesthetics that stand out, or blend in on the golf course. Therefore take a look around and see what colors and designs some bags come in, and then choose accordingly. There is a design for everyone these days.
Budget - Our final factor to consider is of course price. Golf bags come at every price point so whatever you are after, there will be a bag for you whether i be a premium model, or one towards the value end of the spectrum.
FAQs
Why should I purchase a cart bag?
A cart bag is a fantastic way of storing all your important necessities like apparel, golf balls, tees and clubs. What's more, it provides more storage space than a stand bag and doesn't take up as much room as a Tour bag.
Is a golf stand bag better than a cart bag?
This ultimately comes down to what you want from a golf bag. If you’re looking for maximum storage and want to avoid carrying the weight, a cart bag is the better choice. However, if you prefer to carry and value a lighter, more mobile option, then a stand bag is the way to go.
How many slots should a golf bag have?
This ultimately comes down to personal preference. Some golfers prefer a bag with 14 dividers for maximum organisation, while others are happy with four or five. There are plenty of opinions on the ideal number, but it really depends on what feels most comfortable and suits your game.
What kind of bag do pro golfers use?
Professional golfers typically use Tour bags, which are the largest models available. This is because they need to carry all the equipment required for a round, so these bags are packed with pockets for balls, launch monitors, rain gear, umbrellas and a wide range of other accessories.
