Over recent times the spikeless shoe market has grown rapidly thanks to drastic innovations in golf shoe technology. Indeed, the best spikeless golf shoes can now more than stand up against some of the best-spiked designs on the market and you will find many of the leading tour professionals wearing shoes without spikes.

Spikeless shoes are becoming more and more versatile and the designs are such that they are often wearable both on and off the course. They deliver style and functionality but, most importantly, are very comfortable to wear on the course. In years gone by, spikeless shoes would have been scoffed at by the serious golfer for offering far less grip and traction than the best-spiked golf shoes but, thanks to creative designs by the major golf manufacturers, the new generation of spikeless footwear provide impressive levels of grip and stability.

This is why many of the top pros are opting to wear spikeless shoes, but if you are something of a traditionalist and haven’t tried a pair yet then we would heartily recommend you should because you will be surprised at how much grip is on offer. We know this because we have tested a lot of shoes currently on the market, including many of the spikeless variety, so when it comes to judging the best golf shoes out on the course (and sometimes off it), in different lies and stances, as well as varying conditions, we're well qualified to judge.

When judging golf shoes we are looking mostly at performance, comfort, styling, waterproofing and stability as well as various other factors.

In this guide, we have taken a look at some of the best spikeless golf shoes currently on the market, but if you think comfort or waterproofing are your main priorities when it comes to golf shoes, then make sure you read our guides on the most comfortable golf shoes, and the best waterproof golf shoes too.

Top pick

Under Armour Drive Pro SL golf shoe review

A spikeless shoe that delivers the full experience

Specifications

Sizes: 6-14
Waterproof: Yes
Colors: 3 (Grey, White, Black)

Reasons to buy

+
Sensational levels of support and comfort
+
Lightweight but sturdy build
+
Exemplary grip from outsole

Reasons to avoid

-
Upper materials not as premium as the competition

We kick things off with the excellent Under Armour Drive Pro SL. This shoe is the result of two years of research and development, ultimately leading to what the brand is calling a Swing Support System - otherwise known as S3. This new system gives excellent performance because it covers every design element thoroughly, such as the midsole, traction and the new lacing system.

We tested these shoes extensively and the S3 system worked faultlessly to keep the foot planted on the ground while offering the support the foot needs to move in the shoe. It delivers big time on comfort too thanks to a new midsole which features softer, energy returning foam.

Not to be confused with it's sister model the Drive Pro (which is the spiked version of this shoe), the Pro SL has a mixture of TPU (thermoplastic Polyurethane) with rubber nubs, with the firmer TPU positioned through lateral heel to the medial toe in the most important areas for grip. The nubs are actually at different heights as well and the result is a shoe that we felt confident in regardless of lie or ground conditions.

With all this tech and a comprehensive outsole attached to this shoe, you might expect it to be on the heavier side, but at just 12oz it's lighter than most of its direct competition. If you're looking for a hybrid golf shoe - i.e a shoe that can be worn and blend in on and off the golf course - we'd suggest looking elsewhere as this is very much a golf shoe and doesn't claim to be anything else.

The one small criticism we had was the writing on the side of the shoe seems needless and we think it takes away from the aesthetic of the shoe, but otherwise this is a five star product and one of the best we've tested.

Best for walking

FootJoy Pro/SLX Carbon golf shoe review

Continued performance from the latest in an iconic shoe line

Specifications

Sizes: 5.5-14
Waterproof: 100%
Colors: 1 (White/Black/Multi)

Reasons to buy

+
Superb and innovative new spikeless traction system
+
More comfort than ever before in the Pro/SL franchise
+
Premium, athletic looks

Reasons to avoid

-
Could do with more arch support

It's now been eight years since FootJoy introduced the first Pro/SL golf shoe to the market and now we have the latest design, the SLX Carbon, which looks to combine a fresh, modern look with some new technology.

A lot of the reliable technology of previous models remains, but one aspect which FootJoy have really worked on developing is the spikeless outsoles. For this model we see a moulded 3D X-Wing on the outsole. The purpose of this carbon fiber construction is to redistribute energy to the perimeter of the golf shoe to ensure maximum grip where it is needed most. We feel that this make this shoe look very different from other spikeless models on the market, but we have to say that it worked flawlessly, providing us with ample grip, stability, and traction in our testing.

The Pro/SLX Carbon shoe delivers in just about every way and the comfort on offer compares favourably alongside anything else on the market. This is because of the superb Ortholite Impressions FitBed which over time actually moulds to the foot to provide a worn-in feel. The SLX is undoubtedly one of the best golf shoes for walking in and is one of the best spikeless shoes we have tested this year.

Best value

Adidas S2G SL golf shoe

A great value golf shoe given the performance and versatility

Specifications

Sizes: 6.5-14.5
Waterproof: 100%
Colors: 7 (standard), 2 (spiked), 2 (BOA)

Reasons to buy

+
Superb value for money
+
Excellent on/off course wearability
+
Lightweight but quality build

Reasons to avoid

-
Not as breathable as some

Next up we have the adidas S2G SL golf shoe which we are confident is the best value spikeless golf shoe right now because of the combination of the price and performance, not to mention versatility. The new S2G SL (there is also a spiked version available) is based off a running shoe design which you can probably tell based on its modern, sporty silhouette. The sporty design is such that it looks great everywhere so you won'[t need to change them when you've finished your round.

We loved the lightweight, responsive feel of this shoe, which makes it perfect for those transitions from the golf course, to the clubhouse, to the car, to the shops, to anywhere really.

The mix of leather and synthetic materials offers a very comfortable, relaxed fit, and yet we found in our on course testing that it still does a nice job of supporting the feet throughout the golf swing. Interestingly, adidas has implemented Lightstrike technology once again after the success it had with the Tour360 24 and ZG23 golf shoes. This means that the S2G SL provides plenty of cushioning and energy return, giving you all the benefits of a top golf shoe in a sneaker-like design.

The materials used in this shoe won't make this one of the most breathable golf shoes on the market, and the nubs don't penetrate the ground much so if your priority if having the best traction then look elsewhere. That being said, our testing did show that these performed solidly enough in wet conditions and in terms of the total package it is hard to think of a better golf shoe at such a budget-friendly price, especially from a top-quality brand like adidas.

Best looking

G/FORE Gallivan2r golf shoe review

One of the best looking golf shoes we have ever tested

Specifications

Sizes: 7-15
Waterproof: 100%
Colors: 5 (Snow/Twilight, Snow/Baja Camo, Twilight, Snow/Onyx, Snow/Nimbus)

Reasons to buy

+
Just look at them
+
Can't get tired of the foot massaging insole
+
Waterproof, breathable and anti-microbial

Reasons to avoid

-
Integrated rubber cleat system isn't quite as good as the competition

If you value looks and really want to look the part on the golf course, then the Gallivan2r is one of the best looking golf shoes we have seen in the past 10 years. This is a stunning golf shoe which blends the classic design of the G/FORE Gallivanter with the sportiness of the G/FORE MG4+ amazingly well. Given the designs of those two shoes, that was not an easy task but we have to say that G/FORE has smashed it out of the park from an aesthetic standpoint.

Whereas on some of the brand's other shoes we have seen full grain leather, for this shoe G/Fore has used TPU upper materials in construction. Where this model is rather unique though is with the outsole, which boasts an integrated rubber cleat system, featuring 13 on each shoe, are of which are set at the same height. We felt they performed well enough in the different conditions we tested them in, but we do think there are grippier models out there on the market. None of them look this good though.

There is so much to like about the Gallivan2r and, along with the fantastic aesthetics, we would also class it as one of the most comfortable golf shoes we've tested recently. Featuring the classic G/FORE dimpled insole (you know you're wearing G/FORE as soon as you feel that), it also possesses a 3D moulded heel cup that does a great job at keeping the foot comfortably in place, whilst the padding around the heel area ensured that there were no signs of rubbing out on the course, which is of course vitally important as blisters are a sure fire way to ruin a round of golf.

Most comfortable

Ecco LT1 golf shoe review

An outstandingly comfortable golf shoe

Specifications

Sizes: 7.5-12.5
Waterproof: 100%
Colors: 4 (standard), 2 (BOA), 3 (women's)

Reasons to buy

+
Lightweight design that offers ample comfort
+
Well executed BOA lacing system
+
Soft, premium materials used throughout

Reasons to avoid

-
Foot has a tendency to roll within the shoe during the swing

We love Ecco shoes and our first inclusion from them in this guide is the new LT1 spikeless shoe. It's a sporty kind of aesthetic with curved lines and flowing design elements and if we're being brutally honest, it's fairly plain looking. In fact, one might even call it a bit dull. It has very much divided the Golf Monthly office but looks are a subjective point anyway. What is not in dispute is how comfortable they are.

The LT1 is absolutely outstanding in that department largely thanks to a new midsole foam called Ecco Ltyr, which alongside its renowned Fluidform technology creates a midsole with more cushioning and more rebound than ever before. We were massively impressed with the comfort on offer during our testing, The cushioning felt superb and when walking gave a bouncy, springy feel. We also enjoyed the seriously lightweight design too, which further aided the comfort.

When it comes to traction, the outsole is solid but not spectacular and we would not recommend this shoe if you play in a lot of rain or wet weather conditions, as it won't deliver the same level of performance you get from a spiked model. This is an excellent shoe for dry or even damp conditions though, and all in all we think the Ecco LT1 delivers on the brand's claims of setting the bar for lightness and comfort in a shoe. If comfort is king for you, and you don't mind a plain look, then the LT1 is a model you should try.

Nike Air Jordan Low 1 G golf shoe review

Any sneaker fan would love these golf shoes

High quality construction and stitching

May not deliver the same grip as other shoes on this list

As sneaker designs become more and more popular with golfers, it stands to reason that Nike Air Jordan's were eventually going to make a splash in the market, and they certainly have. Nike golf shoes are some of the best on the market and have a significant presence in the professional game, with Rory McIlroy and Brooks Koepka two of the biggest names in the Nike stable.

It's Tony Finau who is most closely associated with the stylish Air Jordan 1 Low G Golf Shoes however. The Low G are built from genuine leather to deliver extreme comfort on the course. Their classic, sneaker-like look pays tribute to the original Air Jordans, first released in the early 80s, only these have been re-designed for golf and feature encapsulated air in the heel cushions that make every step a joy.

While the performance of these shoes is more than adequate, if you are a player who values out and out support and the best possible traction, we would say that there are definitely better models in this guide. While the outsole of the Air Jordan 1 Low G has been adjusted to give more grip throughout the swing so i will deliver in dry or damp conditions, we would not recommend it in the wet.

But then these shoes are designed for use in warmer conditions and they make for a great summer golf shoe that can wear away from the course after your round. All in all, these might be the coolest shoes on this list, even if they aren't necessarily the best in terms of performance.

Best color choice

Adidas Codechaos 22 golf shoe on grass

Adidas Codechaos 22 golf shoe on grass

The Codechaos has been updated and improved in the latest version

Specifications

Sizes: 6-14
Waterproof: 100%
Colors: 7 (Brown/Purple, White/Yellow, Black/Green, Black/Grey, Grey/Green, White, Black)

Reasons to buy

+
Striking looks
+
Exemplary support and grip
+
Good breathability for a synthetic shoe

Reasons to avoid

-
No major performance difference over previous model

We absolutely love the adidas Codechaos and they are worn by a number of our team. In terms of colorways, the Codechaos 22 is just as bold as the original 2020 model but it now comes with a new wraparound outsole that adds a unique look as well as providing more grip and stability. This is a super comfortable golf shoe too, hence why it's so popular with our team, and we would say it's the kind of shoe that you can sometimes forget you are wearing, such is the nature of the comfort, support and grip on offer.

In our testing we really enjoyed the spring delivered by the sole as we paced around the golf course, but the main selling point of this shoe (other than the eye catching colors and design) is just how light they are. Codechaos 22 features adidas' Boost technology throughout the entire shoe which is something we have seen in other adidas shoes, and which in our opinion always delivers. Additionally, the Boost midsole gives instant comfort and we found that the Codechaos 22 shoes took no time at all to break-in. They were supremely comfortable straight out of the box.

The style may divide opinion but for those that like their shoes bold and striking, this is the shoe for you and there is a colorway for everyone to enjoy.

Best heel support

Payntr X 005 F Spikeless Golf Shoes

Excellent comfort and stability, especially towards the heel

Specifications

Sizes: 7-12
Waterproof: No, water-resistant
Colors: 3 (Black, Navy, White)

Reasons to buy

+
Modern, sleek looks
+
Excellent comfort and stability
+
Surprisingly good grip for a spikeless model

Reasons to avoid

-
Not fully waterproof

Next up we have the PAYNTR X 005 F shoe, which is our top pick for those golfers who want as much heel support as possible. This support comes from the PMX Fit on the back that we found really hugged the heel when we first slipped these shoes on. But it delivers in other ways too.

The Clarino Trivela microfibre upper delivers an extremely lightweight and flexible feel straight out of the box. In terms of performance out on the course, we found them to be near faultless when it came to comfort, with the foam midsole creating an almost memory-foam mattress feel when walking.

They also delivered good grip for a spikeless shoe as well but it must be acknowledged that these shoes are only water-resistant, not totally waterproof. If you play regularly in wet weather conditions, you should be looking at either a spiked shoe or something from this list that has a more defined traction.

There are three different color options to choose from, so there should be something for all tastes, with all three featuring very eye catching designs on the sole of the shoes. We feel that the X 005 F shoe certainly strikes the right balance of subtlety and style and it's an excellent choice for golfers who walk the course and who play in mostly dry conditions.

Best for off course

True Linkswear Lux Hybrid Golf Shoe

True Linkswear Lux Hybrid Golf Shoe lying on grass

A great looking low profile shoe perfect for summer

Specifications

Sizes: 7-15
Waterproof: 100%
Colors: 6 (Grey, White, Black, Cognac, Admiral, Azalea)

Reasons to buy

+
Superb low-profile outsole
+
Sleek looks
+
Breathable
+
Lightweight

Reasons to avoid

-
Not as much support around the heel
-
Below par in muddy conditions

If you have never heard of True Linkswear before, they are a relatively fresh brand out of the Pacific Northwest which are truly leaning into the market with their commitment to casual golf shoes that can offer comfort, performance and that all-important wearability off the golf course.

One of their flagship models is the Lux Hybrid which really knocked our socks off in testing. This is one of the most comfortable golf shoes we've tested and as you'd expect from a hybrid shoe, it's just as suitable away from the course as it is on it. These shoes are perfect for a trip to the driving range for example.

The Lux Hybrid features a Wanderlux midsole, with the technology soft to the touch but still firm enough underfoot to offer a decent amount of support during the golf swing. Visually we think these shoes blend into any kind of environment and, at just 11.2oz, the Lux Hybrid is one of the lightest golf shoes we have tested.

A really pleasant surprise for us was the fully waterproof knit material on the upper. When you look and touch this material, you would think it would get soggy quickly but it actually wicks off any water and stays bone dry, which is really impressive.

That being said, while the shoe can certainly handle wet weather, we would recommend not wearing these shoes when it's significantly wet or muddy simply because the overall grip isn't there and you might struggle to maintain a solid base during the swing. For golf in decent conditions though you can't go wrong with this shoe.

FootJoy Premiere Series Field Golf Shoe Review

A beautiful combination of traditional style and modern technology

Specifications

Sizes: 6-14
Waterproof: 100%
Colors: 4 (Brown, Black, White, White/Black)

Reasons to buy

+
Stunning aesthetic
+
Comfort rivals best on the market
+
Waterproof protection

Reasons to avoid

-
Not as much grip as spiked models

If you are a golf traditionalist you will love this shoe. It has the classic look of the old school spiked golf shoe only in a supremely comfortable, spikeless design. We would even say that the Footjoy Premiere Series Field can realistically challenge the G/FORE Gallivan2r for the 'best looking golf shoes' crown. The look might be classical, but when it comes to performance they’re very much up-to-date, providing the perfect blend for traditionalist golfers who are wanting modern performance in their shoes.

It's difficult to say which was more impressive in our testing; looks or performance. Both delivered in exceptional fashion. The grip was more than sufficient, as shown by the lack of slippage during testing despite taking several tricky stances in wet and dry conditions. Comfort was another area where the Field really excelled. From the first wear, right out of the box, there was no uncomfortable rubbing and importantly these shoes fit true to size, with FootJoy also offering medium and wide fits as well.

While the grip isn't quite up to the challenge of playing in very wet conditions, Footjoy have also released a spiked version of this shoe so golfers who really like the class look might consider investing in both spiked and spikeless models. This design is becoming increasingly popular on the PGA Tour too, with stars such as Max Homa and Adam Scott both choosing to wear Premiere Series Field shoes.

The stunning Puma Ignite Elevate Golf Shoe resting on the golf course showing off its thick sole

One of the best-looking spikeless golf shoes on the market

Specifications

Sizes: 7-12
Waterproof: Yes
Colors: 3 (All White; Black/Silver; Grey/Black)

Reasons to buy

+
Soft midsole and upper
+
One of the best-looking spikeless shoes of the year
+
Excellent on/off course wearability

Reasons to avoid

-
Outsole not as comprehensive as rivals

The Ignite Elevate was the upgrade to the popular Puma Ignite Articulate and in our view is one of the best spikeless golf shoes out there. The Elevate may look similar to its predecessor but there have been developments in design, along with the use of new materials, which make it a fantastic looking, trainer-like golf shoe.

In testing, we found that the upper and midsole feel very soft as you walk ensuring that our feet still felt quite fresh even after 18 holes. For this shoe Puma added a back section called the Exoshell which the brand claims will deliver 360º of support to your feet. During testing we agreed that the shoe really does lock your foot in place without feeling too intrusive. The shoe performed fantastically in dry conditions and the somewhat under-stated design doesn't scream out "golf shoe" so it has that versatility which allows it to be worn on and off the course.

Overall, the Elevate is a stunning spikeless golf shoe that will appeal to many kinds of players, but it isn't the best in bad weather when it's slippery underfoot, so be aware of that before you buy. It's a great option for fair weather golf though.

Ecco Biom C4 Shoe review

A breathable, lightweight, comfortable golf shoe

Specifications

Sizes: 6-12
Waterproof: 100%
Colors: 4 (White, Navy, White/Black, Grey/Blue)

Reasons to buy

+
Supreme comfort
+
Incredibly soft leather upper
+
All-over breathability
+
Suitable for all feet widths

Reasons to avoid

-
Toe area prone to staining

While no longer one of the newest shoes on the market, the Ecco Biom 4 can still hold its own against any of the latest releases. This is one of the most technology-packed spikeless golf shoes we've tested in recent years and it seriously impressed us with its overall comfort, grip, style and breathability.

Building nicely on the foundations of the excellent Biom H4, this sneaker style shoe really grabbed our attention from a style perspective, and we can confirm that after extensive testing the performance was there to match, ensuring this shoe was awarded the full five stars in our review.

We loved everything about this shoe, especially the Exhaust Grid technology that scoops fresh air towards the sole of the foot to keep it cool. Such a cool feature. This, combined with Gore-Tex surround and breathable Ortholite insole, makes this the most breathable shoe by some stretch. Another excellent touch from Ecco is that the insole is removable which allows for more width in the shoe, making this a great shoe for golfers with wider feet. Impressively, there is still the same amount of comfort and cushioning even with the first insole removed.

How we test spikeless golf shoes

Our golf shoe testing methodology consists of putting models to the test over a number of rounds and in different conditions so we can gain a better idea of overall performance. We look at factors like grip comfort, grip, stability, waterproofing and how they actually look on the golf course. Each of the shoes listed above has been personally used by a member of the Golf Monthly team and golf shoe testing is headed up by Golf Monthly Staff Writer Dan Parker.

This is the best way of testing a golf shoe as using it in the real world over a number of weeks allows us to see how they perform when variables change like weather, ground conditions, different stances and lies, and so on. We think this also gives us information on the little details as well like which brands come up small or large, which models start to rub a bit too much after 36 holes, and which designs can be used off the golf course and for the drive home. We are very comprehensive in our tests to the point where we will regularly attend product launches and meet with the manufacturer’s R&D experts to understand the new technology. That isn't to say manufacturers can buy a good review though, as all our reviews are made by golfers, for golfers.

What to consider when buying spikeless golf shoes

There is a lot to consider when purchasing your next pair of spikeless golf shoes and the market is absolutely flooded with options. Modern golf shoes feature a ton of technology that can make picking the right golf shoe for you a difficult decision, but fear not as we're here to help. Below we have set out a list of key considerations that you need to keep in mind when purchasing your next pair of spikeless golf shoes.

1. Spiked or spikeless

If you are reading this guide then you are probably in the market for spikeless golf shoes, but just in case there is any confusion we quickly wanted to touch on the differences between spiked and spikeless golf shoes because there are pros and cons for each.

From our testing we have deduced that spiked golf shoes (which feature spikes on the outsole) offer better grip and stability but don't sit as low to the ground as spikeless models. More often than not, they also excel in terms of waterproofing, although we are seeing more and more spikeless designs also give 100% waterproof protection.

Spikeless golf shoes tend to feature moulds on the outsole instead of spikes which as a general rule don't offer as much traction as spiked models, but again, there have been huge improvements in this area over the last few years and in some cases the difference is now negligible. Spikeless designs offer more off-course versatility too - they are perfect for driving in the car to the golf course, playing a round, and then driving home again because they are usually light and comfortable. Some of them are stylish enough that you can wear them in general day to day activities.

2. Comfort

Comfort is king when it comes to golf shoes. An uncomfortable golf shoe is useless and will ruin a round of golf in no time at all, so it is probably worth trying some models on before you buy so you know what you like the feel of. For example, some models have specific foam technologies or specific sole designs that are designed to house your feet in comfort all day when out on the golf course.

2. Grip/Stability/Traction

Spikeless shoe design has improved massively in these factors. Whereas previously, spiked models were the only way to ensure grip and stability in difficult lies or when the weather makes ground conditions slippery, this is no longer the case. Most of the models above have specifically designed traction patterns and lugs to make sure your feet don't slip. Spikeless shoes are perfect for playing in decent weather conditions, while some (but not all) can also handle the wet too.

3. Looks

This is entirely subjective and it will be different for everybody, but whatever your preference you obviously want to make sure you like the look of your golf shoes. We feel that there is a model above for all different types of fashion sense, especially as most shoes come in various color options and not just the ones shown above. If you want a traditional design then something like the FootJoy Pro/SL will work well, whereas if you want to stand out a bit more, the adidas Codechaos is a very good choice.

4. Waterproofing

Most golf shoes these days offer a degree of waterproof protection but some are better than others so if you see yourself playing in the rain a lot, make sure you go for a fully waterproof option that also has good traction to avoid any slippage during your swing.

5. Sizes

Be wary of different sizes because many brands like Payntr and Nike offer shoes that can come up quite small or large if you have got the wrong size. As such it is worth checking out brand websites to see how the shoes convert to size guides from around the world.

6. Price

The last factor to consider is price. With the models above we have tried to find shoes at all different price points so if you want a cheap model, you can get one. Or if you want to spend more, you can do that too. Importantly there is something for everyone.
