Callum Shinkwin wins Hampshire Hog
Eighteen-year-old Englishman Callum Shinkwin wins the Hampshire Hog at North Hants Golf Club, and Jack Bartlett wins the Hampshire Salver
Callum Shinkwin has given England a boost after winning the Hampshire Hog at North Hants Golf Club on Sunday.
Shinkwin shot a pair of 68s on a day of tough scoring in heavy showers to finish three strokes ahead of Martin Young and Jerome Titlow.
The 18-year-old from Moor Park added his name to an illustrious honours board alongside the likes of Justin Rose, Sandy Lyle and Gary Wolstenholme.
"This win opens a lot of doors," said Shinkwin, who was keen to impress the selectors for the England versus France match next month.
"The Hampshire Hog is a huge event and when you see the likes of Sandy Lyle, Justin Rose, Gary Wolstenholme on this trophy, it is a great honour to joint them. If I can achieve what they have I'll be doing ok."
Shinkwin, winner of the England U18 Boys Strokeplay Championship for the Carris Trophy two years ago, was the only player to break par on a testing afternoon, the highlight of his round coming on the 6th, where he produced a towering cut with an 8-iron clearing the branches and settling a foot from the hole.
Meanwhile, Jack Bartlett won the Hampshire Salver, awarded to the best combined score from the Selborne Salver on the Saturday, played at Blackmoor Golf Club, and the Hampshire Hog, beating Matthew Fitzpatrick on count back.
