When the weather turns and the wind is howling you need an item of clothing that will help keep you protected, which is where these windbreakers come in...
Comfort isn't just a luxury in golf—it's key to maintaining a competitive edge. Finding the right apparel that protects you from the wind without compromising your swing can be a difficult balance. Enter the golf windbreaker. The best models not only protect you from the wind, but also help you maintain a consistent core temperature and, crucially, let you swing with freedom. That said, different windbreaker brands use different technologies and fashion designs as you can see below.
Obviously, the best golf waterproofs and best golf rain jackets are an excellent choice for wet conditions, but donning full waterproofs in windy conditions isn't always ideal, which is why we created this specific guide on our favorite jackets to deal with the wind.
The Golf Monthly team has tested a diversity of windbreakers to help you find the right one for your needs. Below, we have listed the best garments to help deal with the cold and you can also check out our guides on the best golf sweaters and best golf hoodies as well.
Best Golf Windbreakers 2026 - Best Golf Wind Jackets

+ Versatile for on/off course
+ Adaptable and comfortable
- Drawcords can be a little distracting
Earlier this year we enjoyed testing the Zukor Jacket from Johnnie-O but in my opinion the bar has been raised further by the Marshall Jacket. A full-zip hooded model, as the name suggests it is as light as a feather, and yet it performed well in breezy conditions making it a good windbreaker as well.
I must admit I am not a fan of the drawcords which can move around and be a little distracting, but this is a minor point because I think the jacket looks great on and off the course, provides a good amount of stretch thanks to the fabric construction, and works well with other layers. The 2-way zipper was a nice touch as well, giving comfort when sitting down in particular. There are three colors to choose from with the Seal model pictured here being the pick of the bunch in my opinion.
Sizes: S to XXL

+ Excellent wind protection with a lightweight feel
+ Versatile, sporty styling
- Loose fit may require sizing down for a traditional look
My first observation of this adidas Windbreaker was the innovative ‘spring-like’ stretch of the fabric, which provides a flexible fit that moves naturally through your golf swing. This piece is specifically engineered for versatility, featuring a full-body lining that adds a surprising layer of warmth against the chill without feeling bulky or restrictive.
The modern, loose silhouette and high-neck design offer a contemporary aesthetic that transitions seamlessly from a breezy morning on the links to a casual afternoon in the city. With its iconic 3-stripe sleeve detailing and durable recycled construction, this windbreaker is an essential outer layer for the active golfer who prioritises both technical performance and a clean, athletic style. It truly excels as a high-functioning garment.

+ Highly breathable
+ Playable fit
- Looks more like it was designed for off the course
If you play golf all year round you’re going to need a playable jacket that is substantial enough to keep all but the worst of weather at bay and the Parachute windbreaker does a very good job of this. The mesh lining ensures good airflow, so you remain comfortable as the temperature changes. The stretch shell combats the wind very well and provides protection from light rain too. We enjoyed the extra details like the inner zip pocket and the double zip, which provides some extra room at the bottom for those who need it. The elasticated cuffs and drawstring at the waist provide a tailored fit that removes excess material that can be distracting during the swing. It’s not cheap but this is a stylish, versatile jacket that will serve you well in a variety of weather conditions.
Sizes: XS to XXL

+ Iconic streetwear aesthetic
+ Exceptional airflow design
- May feel oversized for some
The Pine Windshirt is a superbly premium garment, with its technical nylon-spandex blend providing a lightweight, stretchy feel that adapts perfectly to your follow-through. Part of the ‘Icons’ lineup, this piece features a signature open back vent and an adjustable drawcord waistband, ensuring you stay cool and comfortable during breezy afternoon rounds.
The minimalist black colorway is elevated by the embroidered logo and bold script branding, striking a balance between heritage golf and modern street style. With functional front pockets and a versatile half-zip funnel neck, it’s a stylish transition piece that works as well at the 19th hole as it does on the fairway. Ideal for the golfer seeking a relaxed, contemporary edge.
Sizes: S-XXL

+ Lightweight and comfortable
+ Water and wind resistance
- No zips on pockets
This jacket is a great option to grab from your golf bag when the conditions switch on the course, but it also works well as a companion on a chilly day at the golf club or even a long dog walk with the family. The water and wind resistance offers protection against almost anything the elements can throw at you, but the comfort and fit help to make this jacket look and feel premium.
Ideally, I would like the pockets to have zips - which seems a rather large omission from a golf jacket - but I am willing to forgive it for that as I truly love the way it fits and the simple, classic look it provides.
Sizes: S-XL

+ Extremely lightweight
+ Great wrist cuffs
- Not overly warm
The Puma Wind Jacket is a lightweight ½ zip wind jacket perfect for when you need an extra layer on the golf course. It doesn’t offer a great deal of warmth and is extremely stretchy to the point where you can barely feel it when swinging. The jacket comes with two fairly small zipped pockets for your hands along with a large chest pocket that is easily large enough to fit your phone or scorecard.
It’s extremely comfortably to wear, and we found it to come in a slightly slim fit despite being labeled as regular. It features a good quality main zipper and nice elasticated wrist cuffs, while there's also an adjustable waist hem. The basic styling is inoffensive and it comes in two color options.
Sizes: S-XXL

+ Retro vibe pattern that looks great
+ Short sleeve option for free swing
- More colorways would offer pairing options
This is a great little garment - providing warmth on a cooler day with all the freedom of movement you could ever want in the golf swing. The short sleeve means you can throw this on over a polo shirt and stroll the fairways in complete comfort, while also looking great thanks to the retro vibe of the pattern and design.
The blue, green and white colours on this particular piece go great with a pair of navy trousers or shorts, but additional colorways would allow for a greater range of pairing options that could really make this a staple item for your golfing wardrobe. Lightweight and breathable, this item can sit in your golf bag and be called into action at a moment’s notice to rescue you from a sudden temperature drop or spot of rain.

+ Incredibly light
+ Ample wind and shower protection
- Very thin material almost see through
The Galvin Green Luis is a game-changing short-sleeved wind top that redefines lightweight performance. Weighing just 94 grams, the equivalent to only two golf balls, it eliminates the bulk and restriction often associated with traditional weather protection. Constructed from an ultra-thin, stretchy fabric, the Luis provides impressive wind resistance and surprising water repellency, with moisture beading off the surface during light showers.
Its minimalist design ensures maximum freedom of movement, preventing any bunching at the elbows or wrists during the swing. While the material is somewhat translucent, its versatility is unmatched; it excels as a winter mid-layer or a standalone spring outer. Highly packable and stylishly tailored with an adjustable hem, it’s an essential, high-performance investment for golfers seeking protection without the weight.

+ Good warmth
+ Adjustable wrist cuffs and waist hem
- Not fully waterproof
The half zip wind jacket from Callaway is a fantastic and versatile option for those cold and showery days on the golf course. It offers up a good amount of warmth to protect you from the wind, and it also has water repellent properties to keep you dry in light rains.
It comes with a good amount of stretch thanks to a 91% polyester and 9% spandex design, while it offers great comfort thanks to adjustable wrist cuffs and an adjustable waist hem. You get two good sized hand pockets, which both come with zips. Overall, there’s a lot to like with this jacket.

+ Stretchable and breathable
+ Windproof and water-repellent is a good combo.
- A quarter-zip version would probably hold wider appeal.
It’s quite hard to really categorise this garment as it’s a bit of a one-off from my experience. Abacus calls it a hybrid shirt, but while I’ve owned short-sleeved windtops and waterproofs before, I don’t recall any of them being full-zip but rather quarter-zip so you can just pull them on as and when needed. This one requires the slight extra work of doing up a full zip.
The waffle effect to the main fabric adds a sense of style and it has much to commend it by virtue of being stretchable, breathable, windproof and water-repellent. Abacus says it’s lighter than a full jacket but more protective than a vest (or gilet) making it ideal for mild, windy days, which, along with that unusual full-zip arrangement, perhaps make it an eye-catching but slightly niche product.
Sizes: XS-XXL

+ Innovative zip-off sleeves for adaptability
+ Quiet, 4-way stretch fabric
- Classic fit might be too roomy for those seeking a slim look
The Curo Golf Cadence windshirt, immediately evokes a premium feel, lightweight construction designed to tackle unpredictable elements. The standout feature is its modularity; with zip-off sleeves at the elbow, it effortlessly transforms into a short-sleeve shell, making it a versatile powerhouse for shifting temperatures. Its 4-way stretch material ensures your swing remains fluid and unrestricted, while the DWR finish provides essential water resistance against light showers.
Beyond performance, the clean lines and subtle navy aesthetic allow for a seamless transition from the final green to the clubhouse. With practical additions like a hidden back pocket for your scorecard and a breathable mesh lining, this windshirt is a sophisticated, technical essential for any golfer who refuses to let the wind dictate their day on the course.

+ Lightweight
+ Windproof and water-resistant
- Fairly basic design
Jackets play an important role in the summer months, with passing showers and spells of unpredictable weather often coming at the same time as warm temperatures and humidity. As such, you need a garment that’s lightweight enough to stop you overheating, but which offers enough protection from the elements. It can be a tricky balance to find, but the Ping Vigo half-zip jacket manages it well. It’s constructed from advanced windproof stretch fabric, which provides golfers with unrestricted mobility. There’s a zip chest pocket and also a concealed back zip pocket, which is an interesting touch. The Vigo isn’t going to offer complete protection from a dramatic downpour, but it’s functional and pleasing on the eye.

+ Ideal for various conditions
+ Water resistant
- Short sleeves only
The Ashworth Windproof Short Sleeve 1/4 Zip is a smart, versatile layer designed for changeable conditions on the course. It’s ideal for keeping in the bag and throwing on when the wind picks up or if there’s light rain.
The soft, stretch fabric moves effortlessly through the swing, while the breathable construction ensures comfort without distraction. Water-repellent properties offer protection against light showers (you won’t want to wear it in a downpour though) and all in all it’s a good option for breezy days. I’d prefer long sleeves personally but each to their own.
Sizes: XS-XXL

+ Incredibly versatile
+ Built in pockets
- Not 100% waterproof
It’s difficult to pin down this garment into one particular category. Having worn this over several rounds, in varying conditions, I think it proves to be one of the most versatile golf top layers I’ve ever tested. It’s both wind and water-resistant (good enough to keep you dry in a quick shower, but not prolonged downpours), it has adjustable hems to help with temperature control, and it has concealed pockets. Being from Manors, it's undeniably stylish too.
The Olive colourway in particular is very on trend right now, and the oversized fit also complements the current trends we’re seeing in golf fashion. It can be worn with as much or as little as you like. I had it as a third layer on top of a polo and a midlayer one round, and then just used it above a polo on a day where it was warmer, but still windy.

+ Smart look
+ Can easily be worn away from the course
- Not appropriate for the worst weather
If you are looking for a smart jacket to wear both on and off the course, this option from Tennessee brand, Turtleson, is well worth considering. The first thing I noticed was the streamlined fit. It is comfortable to wear (even with a couple of layers underneath) without being in any way baggy or bulky.
Even though this is a smart jacket you could easily wear out to dinner, it is also designed to be worn for golf. The fabric is both water/wind resistant and stretches with your body as you swing. This makes it a really versatile garment that delivers a modern, sharp look whether you wear it on or off the course.
Sizes: S-XXXL

+ Decent warmth in a half sleeve option
+ Good pocket space
- Fairly ordinary design
This is a layer that comes into its own when it’s cool and breezy, ideal for when you’re playing on an exposed course. The outer technical fabric remains fairly quiet when you’re swinging, and it’s very light and easy to stow away in your bag. The waterproof zips, side adjuster tabs, and shockcord drawstring are all handy features, and although it’s not a ‘wow’ layer, there’s no faulting its functionality. Not everyone will like the nest liner, as it does add a bit of bulk. However, it also generates extra warmth, which some golfers will like. There’s ample pocket room, too, with one main space across the waist accessible via two zipped pockets - which is a little unusual but certainly has its benefits. The single-colour black-and-navy look a little ordinary, while the other three colour combinations offer more appeal.
Sizes: S-XXL

+ Lightweight and breathable
+ Stylish
- Premium price point
If you want a premium lightweight wind jacket that feels as though you're almost wearing nothing at all and have complete freedom in the swing then this is the perfect item. Not only is it extremely lightweight and incredibly breathable, it offers all of the freedom needed on the golf course whilst acting as both the perfect windbreaker and/or layer piece for winter golf.
The elasticated cuffs on the sleeves provide optimum versatility when layering up and the zip up collar offers protection without constriction. Admittedly, the price point is slightly premium but, thanks to its versatile looks and construction, the Orson 3D Jacket is an excellent performer that is worth the price tag.

+ Great mix of materials
+ Well thought out design
- Arms ride up slightly
Slipping the Fusion Padded Jacket on, I felt an immense amount of comfort, as well as a large amount of style, as the mix of materials provides a garment that can be worn both on and off the golf course.
Like other Mizuno golf clothing, it is only available in two colorways, which isn't a bad thing in this instance, as the block colors only heighten the smart look further. Providing stretch on the arms, the material does ride up a bit, but the elastic means it is easy to adjust to your preference. This means that the freedom of movement available also adds to the comfort aspect, which is excellent on a well thought out design that can be worn all year round.
How we test golf apparel
We test golf apparel in the same way we test all golf equipment, by using products properly. The best way to test windbreakers is by doing so out on the golf course to gauge how they deal with the wind, and how warm they keep the wearer. This testing often takes place over a few rounds so we can then see how the jacket has performed over time, in different conditions and how it performs when we have to play varying shots.
We would also wear the tops off the golf course as well because versatility to use a garment anywhere is a great way to get value for money. It is worth saying that we utilize the entire Golf Monthly team when testing apparel because we are all regular golfers, and given the number of high-quality golf brands out there, we need a lot of people to test everything we can.
The final point we wanted to mention here is no manufacturer can pay for a good review because our thorough testing team tells it how it is.
What to consider when buying a golf windbreaker
Protection
This is the most important factor to consider really because a good wind jacket has to protect the wearer from the wind and the cold. The best models stop the wind penetrating the fabric and making your core cold, and also have nice features like fleece lined pockets to give you some respite from the poor conditions.
Waterproofing
Do you want the jacket to offer waterproof protection as well? Many of the models in this guide offer some kind of water repellent protection but if you want something for greater downpours, then we would recommend taking a look at the models in our best golf rain pants guide, or maybe try investing in one of the best golf umbrellas as well!
Freedom of movement
With all this protection, occasionally jackets can be large and cumbersome but in modern golf design this is no longer the case. Most really good models stretch and move with the body freely so that your swing isn't hindered despite having a few layers on. Here we would recommend trying on models and making practice swings to see if you like the movement on offer.
Color
If you are wearing it, you have to like what it looks like. No longer are golf windbreakers drab and boring to look at because now there are designs for all fashion senses. It is just a case of picking a design and color you like.
Versatility
Do you want to be able to use the jacket anywhere from the golf course to the pub to at home? This is an important factor if you want to get more for your money and thankfully there are lots of model above that we feel can be used on and off the course.
Budget
Finally be aware of your budget so you can find a jacket that fits into it nicely. Importantly there are models above which come with premium, and value price points so there is something for everyone.
