Has Vessel Created The Perfect Golf Bag In The Sunday IV?

Golf Monthly’s resident golf bag tester Dan Parker swears by Vessel golf bags, so when I was set to test one for the first time, he simply told me to “enjoy it.”

A strange thing to say, I thought at the time. It’s only a golf bag, right? Then, as I walked down my opening hole during testing, I completely understood what he meant.

Vessel’s reputation as a niche, highly premium golf bag manufacturer is no secret, and the fourth edition of its Sunday Bag elevated the model even further than the Sunday III predecessor by swapping the previously used Diamond X-PAC Ripstop nylon for Tour-Grade Synthetic Leather. The result is the most premium bag I’ve ever used and a contender for the best golf bag money can buy.

Those premium details aren’t blatantly obvious when you unbox the bag upon delivery, which makes it all the more satisfying as you continue discovering them over time. Vessel has opted for a refined, minimalist aesthetic complemented by functional, well-thought-out detailing.

Major touchpoints like the carry handle and valuables pocket zipper feature hand-stitched leather that feels as good as it looks. The three-way divider top is velour-lined, as are the interiors of the valuables pocket and the magnetic rangefinder pocket positioned above the customizable, detachable ball pocket.

The straps? Also velour-lined, of course. You can switch between the double strap, which I prefer while playing, or a single strap if you are heading out with a half set for a quick nine holes.

I am also a massive fan of the handle built into the top cuff, which I found myself grabbing every time I set the bag down. It is sturdy and easy to control, while the leather padding adds another luxury touch.

Once on the course, the bag delivered performance I didn't think possible from a ultra-light carry bag. Drawing on 12 years of experience caddying at Royal County Down, I’ve carried hundreds of golf bags over the years, and none felt as comfortable on my back as the Sunday IV. The self-adjusting Equilibrium 2.0 Double Strap features an eight-point swivel mechanism that adapts to your posture as you walk. I’ve never tested a bag that contours to the body so effortlessly.

The Rotator Stand System also proved flawless during testing, supported by ultra-light carbon fiber legs. All in all, this bag weighs just 4.45 lbs (2.0 kg), yet it never felt flimsy or unstable.

I can also report that the bag held up during a heavy two-hole rain shower during my initial testing round at Ormeau Golf Club in Belfast. The main side pocket accommodated my rain jacket (rolled up to preserve space), and the waterproof zippers kept my accessories and valuables bone dry.

If you carry a lot of extra apparel, removable garment tether loops allow you to secure a sweater or jacket to the exterior, another clever, space-saving feature.

My primary concern heading into the review was capacity: as a Sunday bag, would it realistically house all 14 clubs? Vessel recommends carrying 10 clubs for optimal comfort, but I loaded a full set anyway. Pleasingly, I encountered few to no issues replacing clubs post-shot.

While players with oversized putter grips might find the fit a bit snug, I was thoroughly impressed by how comfortably it accommodated a full 14-club setup.

At £309 or $309, the price point represents great value within the Vessel lineup, serving as an accessible entry point before stepping up to $400+ models like the Player V or Lux Stand bags.

The Sunday IV is easily the best bag I’ve tested this year. It feels like ordering the top-tier wine at a restaurant or upgrading to extra-legroom seats on a flight - sometimes it’s worth treating yourself. Doing so here gets you one of the finest golf bags money can buy and, without a doubt, the best Sunday golf bag on the market.
