Equipment manufacturer Wilson Golf celebrated the 50th anniversary of is presence in Scotland last week as brand ambassador Paul Lawrie opened the EMEA Wilson Golf Competency Centre in Irvine.

The facility was originally opened as Europe's largest golf club manufacturing plant by seven-time major winner Sam Snead in 1962, and the Irvine facility now produces more than 70,000 custom-fitted clubs ever year.

The 1999 Open Champion and 2012 Qatar Masters winner Paul Lawrie - who re-signed with Wilson Golf in 2010 - took time out of his schedule to mark the centre's golden anniversary and re-name the facility.

"I'm delighted to be associated with Wilson and its facility here in Scotland, which I first visited more than 15 years ago," said Lawrie, who uses Wilson Staff FG Tour irons and wedges.

Doug Wright, Business Director for Europe at Wilson Golf, expressed his pride that Wilson has won more majors than any other brand, adding:

"The 50th anniversary of Wilson's involvement at Irvine commemorates a golden era that has given so much to the industry.

"Our current product range continues to be popular around the world with players of all abilities."

The year 2012 has been successful for both Lawrie and Wilson Golf, whose market share is growing; helped, in part, by increasing sales of Ci11 and FG Tour irons.

Its parent company Amer Sports have also announced a rise of 7% in net sales for the first quarter of 2012.
