Best Golf Tops 2025
Looking for the best golf tops? Here we have taken a look at the options on the market and come up with a list of our favorites.
We all know how invaluable a good golf top can be out on the golf course, especially if you play in a climate of ever-changing weather conditions. We need a good layer with us when out on the golf course, to keep us warm, comfortable, and as a good protector against the wind and rain. For the fashion conscious amongst us, it has to look good too.
Fashion aside, a good golf top needs to be light and breathable because playing golf is hard enough without having to worry about a cumbersome piece of clothing that restricts the swing.
Of course the word 'top' implies anything to be worn on the top half of the body, however we have taken it to mean garments to be worn over polo shirts and under specifically designed waterproofs. So bearing that in mind, below we have taken a look at some of our favorite golf tops.
Alternatively if you are looking for something else in the golf apparel sector, take a look at some of our other buyers guides too - such as the best golf rain jackets, best golf polos or the best golf pants.

+ Incredibly soft fabric
+ Premium construction
- Can be tricky to maintain
This 3D Tour Cashmere Hoodie is my favorite piece of golf apparel right now. The quality of the construction and the softness of the fabric has to be felt to be believed. It is part of the premium cashmere collection and as a result it has a premium price, but the quality and the performance is worth it in my opinion.
Made with a 3D Knitting process, this eliminates seams and offers key stretch just where I need it. As a result it isn’t restrictive at all and is incredibly comfortable. The feel is also lightweight and breathable but the top gave good warmth as well. The only real negative for me is with a garment of this quality, and the cashmere construction, it means I have to be very careful with its use, especially when it comes to washing it.

+ Incredibly lightweight
+ Water-repellent
- Camo design not for all
If you need a garment to help deal with inclement weather then I think I’ve found the ideal pullover for you. The aesthetic of this hooded top will divide opinion, but the Twilight color grew on me and despite the camo finish, it isn’t a loud garment. I think there is a degree of subtlety here that works well off the course too, on walks for example.
Thanks to a water-repellent finish, the pullover works for those pesky showers we occasionally get caught in, and yet the extremely lightweight and breathable construction allows it to perform on warmer days as well. Additionally, it pairs very well indeed with polos and mid-layers for colder rounds too. Finally it stretches nicely and folds down to nothing so it can go in pretty much any pocket in your bag.

+ Simple but stylish
+ Versatile for off-course wear
- Hood can flap around in strong gusts
This Full Zp Windbreaker from Adidas is an appealing all-round golf outerwear pick. Its lightweight woven construction blocks wind while allowing stretch for an unrestricted swing, making it blend performance and comfort very well.
For the price, it delivers enough warmth and modest water resistance for nearly all conditions — though it’s not built for heavy rain. The jacket offers a flattering, flexible fit and plenty of off-course appeal - we’ve worn it just as much away from the fairways as on them, heightening the clear value on offer here. The hood is a nice inclusion, enhancing both the style and the level of protection on offer and I like the Navy model I got in testing, although there is also a teal and purple finish as well for those that want to stand out a bit more.

+ Very warm
+ High stretch fabric
- Extra warmth adds bulk
If you want to continue playing golf long into the winter, you will need to invest in some proper cold weather gear. This half-zip from Peter Millar fits that bill perfectly. First and foremost, it offers an impressive amount of warmth. It combines a soft fleece exterior with a plush fleece interior to provide a cosy, comfortable feel. There are also some water resistant shoulder panels that offer even more protection from the elements.
You should also notice how lightweight and stretchy the material is while you play. Whilst the fleece does make this jumper a little more bulky than some others, it wasn’t enough to prevent me from making a normal golf swing. It’s also warm enough that you shouldn’t need to add too many extra layers to feel comfortable in the cold.

+ Material feels great against your skin
+ Breathable fabric
- Fits quite large so sizing tricky
Sporty, stylish and oh so comfortable, the Nike Victory Dri-Fit Top is an indispensable layering piece for any golfer. Crafted from smooth, stretchy knit fabric, this top ensures that sweat won't cause you any issues over 18 holes. Nike's Dri-FIT technology wicks away moisture, keeping you dry and comfortable, while the Therma Flex fabric adapts to your body's temperature, providing warmth without restricting movement.
The textured fabric looks fantastic and I think it’s easy to match with any outfit. The zip design offers adjustable airflow, and its regular fit layers effortlessly over your favorite polo. I would recommend going a size down if you prefer a more athletic fit as this particular mid-layer does come up quite long compared to other options on the market.

+ Premium hoodie that is one of the softest I’ve ever worn
+ Kangaroo pocket not intrusive
- Extra care is needed when washing
Premium, premium, premium. The Finnooch hoodie was a joy to test, not just because of how high quality the garment felt, but how soft and comfortable it felt while out on the course. Made from 100% Zegna Baruffa Wool, it delivers a fit that hugs your body without being intrusive and restrictive, instead delivering a stretch that you’ll appreciate as you swing.
The ribbed cuffs are another thing I appreciated while playing as I typically like to roll my sleeves up before each swing, meaning the sleeves stayed in place and didn’t intrude. This isn’t a hoodie you can throw into the rest of your wash and put into the washing machine at a higher temperature, but the extra care needed is worth it for how high the quality is here.

+ Incredibly stretchy
+ Simple design can be worn for multiple sports
- Doesn’t provide a great deal of warmth
The Lululemon Metal Vent Tech Half Zip has seamlessly integrated itself into my golfing wardrobe. As expected from Lululemon, a brand renowned for sleek and comfortable clothing, this half-zip is engineered for movement. Its incredibly lightweight and stretchy fabric, coupled with a seamless design, offers a perfect balance of form and function.
My preferred Black/Black colorway is not only ideal for 18 holes, but also transitions effortlessly into any sport or outdoor activity. While this mid-layer is ideal for cooler summer rounds, it does lack the warming factor provided by something a touch thicker.
It’s also worth bearing in mind that this particular garment came up a touch small for me, so it’s worth potentially going up a size compared to other brands.

+ Extremely classy piece
+ Genuine on/off course versatility
- Some will prefer performance fabric
Pull on the Oscar Jacobson Kennedy Lightweight Knitted Hoodie and you'll soon notice the luxurious softness of its fine-gauge knit. This isn't your average hoodie; it's crafted from a performance blend that's both lightweight and breathable, keeping you comfortable without weighing you down. The moisture-wicking properties efficiently draw sweat away from your skin, ensuring you stay dry, even during the most intense rounds.
While not designed for extreme cold, it layers beautifully, as with so much of the Oscar Jacobson range. Practical details include a comfortable hood and discreet front pockets for your essentials. This hoodie is perfect for the golfer who values comfort, performance, and understated style. It's a versatile piece that elevates your on-course look while keeping you feeling fresh and ready to play.

+ Lightweight and wearable on and off the course
+ Modern design
- Have to pull over head to take off which may be difficult if you had restricted movement
The covert quarter zip is the perfect addition to any golfers attire, whether you are a tour pro or an average joe, this jacket will be a good choice. Featuring its stowaway hood, this jacket can save the day when the rain showers kick in on a round, allowing you to keep playing and not have to seek shelter when the rain comes in.
It is waterproof which means that you can stay completely dry when getting caught in a pinch. I especially like the front pocket which can be a place to put your phone, wallet or scorecard for easy access. The draw cord at the bottom allows you to keep the heat in on those early morning rounds and it can be machine washed which is a bonus for a jacket of this type. It folds down compactly so can be stored in your golf bag easily when it gets a bit warmer later in the day or in the spring months.

+ Ultra-lightweight, breathable
+ Modern fit, sharp aesthetic
- Other layers needed for colder rounds
The Bell Pullover offers an ultra-lightweight feel and exceptional breathability thanks to its innovative AIRATION perforated fabric.
This isn't a pullover designed to provide significant warmth; rather, it serves as a high-performance layer that excels in moisture management and all-day comfort.
The signature tailored fit from Holderness & Bourne ensures a sharp, modern look and wouldn’t look out of place at the gym or playing other sports.
Its sophisticated styling is complemented by practical performance features such as UPF 50+ sun protection, neat straight cuffs, and a modern drop-tail silhouette for enhanced coverage.

+ The ideal quarter zip
+ Loads of colors to choose from
- Perhaps the price
Having recently tested the Sully Pullover, I can understand why it is a best-seller on the Johnnie-O website. In short, it is the ideal quarter zip in my opinion. The cotton blend fabric feels lovely and comfortable, the top looks great and it comes in an amazing 16 different colors. The pullover fits well and is designed not only to be comfortable, but smart as well, ensuring there is no excess material which can be annoying and impede the swing.
Importantly it is a versatile garment thanks to the refined finish, meaning it can be used on and off the course, for example I have worn it to work a number of times. I also really liked how the fabric felt lightweight, and yet thick enough for when it gets a touch chilly. Perhaps the only stumbling block for some could be the price, but given its performance, I think the Sully is worth it.

+ Striking design
+ Lightweight and breathable
- High price point
Constructed using a polyester, elastane blend, the Heath Strike Mid Layer is incredibly lightweight and stretchy allowing for a sleek and athletic fit that provides room and freedom in all the right places. The design has a honeycomb structure on the front and back which both looks and feels fantastic, while the arms provide incredible skin feel akin to a supersoft brushed cotton on the interior.
A white silicone JL Bridge logo on the collar delivers a splash of contrast, while additional branding on the right sleeve provides a welcome point of difference from other options on the market. This mid layer is right at the top of what you can expect to pay in this category, but if you are looking for quality, style and comfort, you’ve come to the right place.

+ Hybrid design provides targeted warmth
+ Stretch knit back and sleeves offer excellent mobility
- Quilted front won’t be to everyone's taste
The Puma Tech Hybrid 1/2 Zip is a premium modern layering piece that brings a blend of style and comfort to your wardrobe. This midlayer is perfectly engineered for golf, with the woven, quilted front panel providing the perfect amount of warmth for a cool day without the additional bulk that comes from wearing a gilet.
The best part is the back and sleeves, which are made from a completely different stretch knit fabric, giving you total freedom of movement in the swing, all while keeping me dry and comfortable. It's a very smart design that blends a premium look with the warmth where you need it and stretches across the arms, shoulders, and back to keep you moving freely. It's the ideal top for changeable conditions.

+ Extremely comfortable
+ Versatility to wear anywhere
- Runs slightly long on length
As you can imagine from the name, the Cloud quarter zip 2.0 is one of the softest and most comfortable quarter zips on the market. It features an extremely soft fleece fabric that remains extremely breathable. The Cloud 2.0 has a modern fit, one that is not too tight, yet not baggy and acts as a stylish option for a cool day on the course.
The Cloud quarter zip 2.0 optimizes what the Travis Mathew golf range is about, clothing that is performance enhancing, yet stylish enough to be worn anywhere. This quarter zip is fairly light for how much warmth it provides and we are fans in particular of the enclosed zip and simple logo detailing. A mainstay in The Masters champion Jon Rahm's tournament attire.

+ Extremely warm
+ Constructed from recycled fabric
- The design on the back will divide opinion
The Dean is a superb quarter zip that is ideal for cooler autumn and winter rounds. The snug fit and soft fabric feel great against your skin, and fit fantastic, providing an athletic silhouette. Created using 90% recycled polyester, the Dean is both a sustainable product and also one that delivers premium performance. During my time testing the midlayer it kept me incredibly warm, while still managing to regulate my body temperature so I didn’t overheat during long walks up hills, or during quick sprints to try and spot if my ball had flown out of bounds.
The Dean is a great all rounder that could be worn over a polo on warmer days or part as a layering outfit when temperatures start to drop. The block color design is potentially on the safe side, but it’s a really solid offering, and one that’s very versatile.

+ Great waterproof capabilities
+ Hood provides additional protection from elements
- Not overly warm
This hoodie is perfect for golfers who want something reliable and simple to reach for when conditions take a turn for the worse. The four-way stretch is extremely lightweight, breathable and waterproof - making it a great option to put on over a polo shirt, jumper or vest to add another layer of protection. Besides its functional features, the garment also looks fantastic.
The adjustable waterproof hood along with the sleek chest and hand zippers give this item a premium look while also offering practical solutions that can help to keep you out on the golf course for longer. The overlapping hem construction reduces the bulk that is sometimes felt with additional layers, meaning you can swing freely and play your best stuff.

+ UA Storm tech repels water effectively
+ Lightweight warmth without bulk
- Not fully waterproof
The Under Armour Drive Storm top is an outstanding, versatile mid-layer for golfers who like to get out on the course all year round. The key feature is the UA Storm technology, a water repellent material that works exactly as advertised, making light rain and drizzle bead up and roll right off, saving you from getting wet when caught in a shower.
Unlike some water-repellent gear, it's incredibly breathable, so I never felt overheated. The fabric is lightweight but provides a good amount of warmth, thanks to the fleece lining, and the 4-way stretch is fantastic, allowing for a completely unrestricted swing. I found the fitted design to be perfect - it's fitted without being tight. While it won't replace a full waterproof jacket in a downpour, it's the ideal piece for 90% of cool or damp rounds throughout the winter.

+ Stylish and versatile
+ Flexible and comfortable
- Only one color choice
Penguin has a reputation for producing some of the more jazzy, colorful and out-there garments on the market today, but this sweatshirt proves the brand can more than hold its own when it comes to the more conventional, too. It’s a very smart and stylish garment, and while it’s a shame it’s only available in one color option, the gray that has been chosen is both refined and versatile. It’s a perfect jumper for those mild autumn and spring days, or when the sun sets in summer, and the range of motion it provides is exceptional. Indeed, it has added stretch built in, the moisture wicking fabric will keep your temperature well regulated and it's machine washable, too.

+ Great crossover piece
+ Very fashionable
- If you prefer a tailored fit
The Malbon Elliott Jacket offers the wearer a true crossover piece that could be worn equally well on the golf course while giving a distinct lifestyle feel. It may not provide the waterproof protection some golfers demand, but it offers a fantastic wind barrier and easily accommodates layers underneath. The relaxed, boxy fit means the style doesn't intrude, and the smart silhouette ensures it can be paired well with many different pants. It lacks the elasticated technical cuffs of dedicated golf windbreakers, but this doesn't detract from its purpose as a functional, fashionable outer layer. For comfort and convenience, there’s a full zip closure and ample buttoned chest pockets that provide secure storage. This jacket is perfect for the fashion-conscious golfer who values street style and durability, making a statement both on and off the course.

+ Very comfortable and stretchy
+ Great fit
- Not waterproof
The Adda Windbreaker Lightweight jacket is a very comfortable and versatile jacket from Reflo that is a joy to play golf in thanks to its stretchy make-up. It fits exactly as we hoped and offers up a good amount of warmth and wind protection, although it isn't fully waterproof. It has two good sized zip pockets which feel good quality and robust along with the main full zip.
The cuffs also have a good amount of stretch and a unique tapered design that is a nice touch. Overall this is a good value for money jacket that feels well thought out and high quality. It is sure to get a lot of wear on the course in a variety of different conditions as well as away from it, too. It’s also made from recycled polyester so credit goes to Reflo for its sustainability, with the brand also pledging to plant a tree for every one of these jackets bought.

+ Soft, comfortable material
+ Folds down very small
- Not the warmest mid-layer available
The mid-layer may not have the star-quality of a bright polo or the technology of a waterproof jacket, but it’s a vital part of any golfer’s wardrobe which provides quick warmth when you need it most. This pullover is the perfect example and comes into its own on those summer rounds where the temperature is unpredictable. It’s made from a soft-touch brushed knit fabric which is very comfortable and lightweight, meaning it slips off and on easily and folds down very small to store in your golf bag.
It features Callaway's Opti-Dri technology which provides moisture-wicking performance and UPF 50+ UV protection. The design takes inspiration from the brand’s chevron logo and is finished with a 1/4 zip neck along with Callaway and Odyssey logos for a tour-inspired look.
Sizes: S-XXXL

+ Stylish design
+ Versatility
- No pockets
The jacquard pattern across the body gives this quarter zip fleece an attractive point of difference, and the Ping Eye logo on the right shoulder and Eye Mark logo on the back neck complete the look. Combined with modern performance, the Nolan, which is available in four very different colors, is well worth a place in your golfing wardrobe. This is all about providing lightweight warmth for when the temperature dips - and it certainly ticks this box.
The material is super stretchy, too, which means golfers won’t sacrifice any range of movement when playing. Meanwhile, the water-resistant finish makes it suitable for wear in light rain, a useful attribute in changeable weather conditions. The lack of pockets might deter some people from purchasing. Overall, however, this is a smart and super versatile offering.
How we test golf tops
We test golf apparel in the same way we test all golf equipment, by using products properly. In relation to tops this means putting them to the test out on the golf course to see if the design is well thought out, if the garment interferes with the swing in any way, and simply if the top is actually usable. We would also wear the tops off the golf course as well because versatility to use a garment anywhere is a great way to get value for money. The final point we wanted to mention here is no manufacturer can pay for a good review because our thorough testing team tells it how it is.
What to consider when buying a golf top
There are several factors to consider when it comes to buying a golf top and here we have listed them.
Type
What we mean here is what type of golf top are you after? It is a vague term that means covering the top half of the body and as such we have listed jackets, hoodies, vests and jumpers in this guide. Each type of top offers something a little bit different in terms of performance, feel and look so before going any further down the buying road, have a think about this.
Additionally we also mean in relation to when you want to wear the top because some models above will be better for the summer, some will be better for the winter so have a think about when you will wear the top and what you want it to do.
Material
Linking with the above point, knowing what you are after will help you decide what material to go for. The fleece models above will keep the cold at bay whilst ones with more spandex in them will help you move easier and won't restrict the golf swing in any way. Additionally we have found the models with cotton in them are often the best for wearing out and about as well, and they are very easy to wash.
Movement
One of the big things around golf tops is freedom of movement and whether they can restrict or negatively impact the swing. Many don't like hoodies because the hood flies around during the swing, and others think vests constrict the arms a touch. The hood flying around is a common point made by people. As such, we would recommend trying on models and taking swings in them to see if you still offer the same range of movement.
Looks
This is an important factor to consider. Do you want to stand out or just have a more understated look? We think there is something for everyone above.
Versatility
Do you want to be able to use the top anywhere from the golf course to the pub to at home? This is an important factor if you want to get more for your money.
Budget
Finally be aware of your budget so you can find a top that fits into it nicely. Importantly there are models above which come with premium, and value price points so there is something for everyone. For more golf apparel buying advice, we also have guides on the best lightweight golf jackets and best golf quarter zips.
