Putting is a crucial stat at any Major Championship and The Masters is no different. Although the stats gurus will point to approach play and skill around the green as the recipes to success, a big reason why Rory McIlroy slipped on his second Green Jacket was the consistency he found with the short stick - massive birdie putts on 12 and 13 laid the foundations for the Northern Irishman to go back-to-back at Augusta National.
However, despite Rory's win, he did not lead the field in putting for the week - instead, it was a player who not many would have expected. Collin Morikawa is roughly tour average when it comes to performance on the greens, but the American's putter was red hot this week at The Masters, particularly on Sunday.
Using the TaylorMade Spider Tour X putter, the same model as McIlroy, Morikawa gained 2.14 strokes for the week with the flatstick, leaning on his putter at a time in which he was clearly still fighting against the back injury he suffered at The Players three weeks ago. His hot putter allowed him to card five straight birdies on the final nine holes as he rallied to finish T7 with a closing round of 68.
The TaylorMade Spider Tour X putter is an excellent high MOI, mid-sized mallet that combines forgiveness with a distinctive Tru Path alignment line to help you hole more putts. Used by Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy and Collin Morikawa, it's one of the most popular putters in professional golf. It is worth saying Scheffler uses the L-Neck design whilst Rory and Collin opt for the more classic neck shape.
Morikawa switched from a blade to a mallet putter in recent years and has benefitted from the change. He's also not the only player finding success after switching to the TaylorMade Spider Tour X mallet, with many crediting Scottie Scheffler's incredible run of form over the last two years down to his own putter switch.

Conor joined Golf Monthly in late 2024 after graduating with a Masters degree in Sports Journalism from St Mary's University and heads up reviews for rangefinders, GPS and golf watches. Conor is lucky to have Royal County Down as his home golf course, beginning to play the game at the age of four, later becoming a caddy at RCD at just eleven years old and doing so for over 12 years. Playing to a 5 handicap, you’ll likely find him on the range trying (and failing) to hit a Shane Lowry-esque stinger that helped him win The Open Championship at Royal Portrush.
