Golfers and monkeys had much to consider at Kuala Lumpur Golf & Country Club
Anirban Lahiri won his maiden European Tour title at the Maybank Malaysian Open. This victory for the 27-year-od Indian arrives just three months after he came through Qualifying School. His triumph was after he made a late surge with closing rounds of 62 and 68 - at the halfway stage he wasn’t even in the top 20 on the leaderboard (opens in new tab).
Defending champion Lee Westwood and Graeme McDowell started well and were tied for lead after day one (opens in new tab) of the Maybank Malaysian Open at six under par. Westwood made seven birdies in his round, six of them at par 4s. Westwood was co-leader rafter the second round, but then scores of 69 and 75 left him tied in fifth.
Paul McGinley was making his first Tour start of the year. in his first competitive round since November he made 69. He could not keep this up however and rounds of 76, 77 and 77 left him last of those who made the cut, in 73rd.
Englishman Matthew Baldwin escapes from a bunker on day two.

Bernd Wiesberger got away to a fine start on day three (opens in new tab), with five straight birdies. He hit every green in regulation and made ten birdies and a bogey and ended up as a career-best 63 to take him two shots clear after the third day of the Maybank Malaysian Open.
At the end of his round he said; "I have a good chance to take this home, but I’m not discounting anybody. There was a 62 out there and there’s probably going to be another 62 out there as well.”
As it was third-day fifth-placed Anirban Lahiri’s final round (opens in new tab) 68 was enough for him to take the title. Lahiri went into the lead on the 17th when he holed a chip and when he holed out for par on the final hole it meant that...
... Bernd Wiesberger needed a 20ft birdie putt on the final green to force a play-off. He left it short.
