How To Book A Round At Royal Troon

If watching The Open has whetted your appetite for some high-quality links golf, we look at how you can enjoy a round at Royal Troon

Many people will be watching the Open and wrongly believe that our great Open Championship courses are unavailable to non-members. This is certainly not the case at Royal Troon.

It may not suit everyone’s wallet but if you have the money and the inclination you can get a tee-time if you book far enough in advance.

The course is open to visitors on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays between late April and October each year and the greenkeepers will be working flat-out to get the Championship course back in shape for the post-tournament re-opening on July 25th.

It will cost £220 per visitor for the Championship course but for that price you also get a complimentary second round on the Portland course.

If you play with a member then the rest of the week is also available and I was assured in the pro shop that if you do visit you’ll be treated like a member for the duration of your time at the club.

In terms of how far to book in advance, I was told that for a four-ball on the Championship course you should be looking at booking five to six months in advance with that time coming down slightly for one- and two-balls. Cancellations do come up however so you never know your luck.

For those really wanting to push the boat out, you could look into staying at the recently relaunched Turnberry resort just down the road so you can take in two of the current Open rota. With Prestwick, host of the first ever Open in 1860, a few miles away too, you can spend a few days up here and really immerse yourself in the history of the Championship.

Troon also boasts several great public courses so if you only have the capacity for one expensive round, you can fill the rest of your trip with good golf that won’t break the bank. Ayrshire as a whole has some true golfing gems so if you’re wondering where to go on your next trip, and don’t mind some erratic weather, this could be the place for you.
