Golf Blog: Golf's Bright Young Things

Lydia Ko is a name that is now well known amongst golf fans.

The 16 year old Kiwi amateur has been achieving remarkable results for such a young age, against the world's best female golfers.

She is now looking to get paid for it, recently petitioning the LPGA for membership. And honestly, who can blame her.

The words prodigy and phenomena get banded around in sport and more often than not can be the stumbling block for a young sportsperson's career.

But, in the case of Ko, those words are not only fitting, they also don't seem to have done her game any harm.

Already a four time winner on the professional tour, Ko also finished 2nd in the final Major of the year. She has proven that she can beat the best and compete on the highest level.

It seems like a no brainer for commissioner Michael Whan.

But, as always with the future of young star athletes, the decision to let her play with the big girls on a full time basis will not be taken lightly.

There will be worries about how such a young mind and body will cope with the pressure and rigour of a full professional season.

No doubt officials will also be worried about the effect of the potentially huge financial rewards that could come her way if she does join the tour full time.

Whilst the LPGA must be rubbing their hands with glee, with a new star woman golfer on the scene they also do not want to see her fizzle out or take a wrong turn.

But, if I was in charge, I wouldn't be worried about Ko embarrassing the tour or not living up to her potential.

Four wins as an amateur surely puts any fears like that to bed doesn't it?

If she isn't ready now with a multiple win season as an amateur, I don't know when she, or anybody for that matter, is.
