Whilst Singh was able to reach the par-five second extra hole in two, the Spaniard found trouble in the rough and despite a free drop the resulting par could not match commanding Singh's third birdie in four holes.

European Ryder Cup captain Nick Faldo will surely be buoyed by the world number four's form even if Garcia himself was left disappointed with another runner's up spot. The Spaniard reflected: "I think the most important thing about it is that I keep putting myself in a good position."

Singh praised Ridgewood County Club who hosted the event for the first time after 41 seasons at Westchester County Club: "Westchester was a good golf course. This tops Westchester. Every single player absolutely enjoyed this golf course."

Meanwhile, England's Paul Casey, hopeful of a Ryder Cup wildcard, could only finish joint seventh after a final round 72.
