Not only does it have non-golf fans riveted with its glamour and excitement but it gives die-hards a welcome break from watching the players grind out a score in strokeplay events.
Quite simply, matchplay is the game in its purest form. Reputation and world ranking count for nothing when your opponent has just holed out from what looked like an impossible shot in the bunker! You either return fire or perish. Three days of this punch and counter-punch leave fans and players alike gasping for air but there really is nothing else like it.
