A guide to the fifth hole at Royal Birkdale Golf Club in Southport, England ahead of the 146th Open Championship
Royal Birkdale Golf Club Hole By Hole Guide: Hole 5
Hole 5 – Par 4 – 346 yards
The 146th Open Championship takes place at Royal Birkdale this month, here is a guide to the fifth hole.
This dogleg-left presents itself as a risk-reward hole for the longer hitters, who may be tempted to go for the green off the tee.
At around 320-330 to the front of the green, in good conditions with some breeze behind this should be in range for the likes of Dustin Johnson and Rory McIlroy, however they may be put off by the sand.
For most, though, it is a long iron or fairway wood to the apex of the dogleg which will leave a mere flick onto this well-guarded green.
No less than seven pot bunkers are waiting if an approach is wayward or short.
