Inside LIV at JCB: Why It Might Be the League’s Best Event Yet

We attended the inaugural LIV Golf UK by JCB event last year at the JCB Golf & Country Club. Here's why we won't be missing it this year...

The world of golf is no stranger to tradition, but since its inception, LIV Golf has consistently sought to redefine the spectator experience, injecting a vibrant, festival-like atmosphere into the sport. Nowhere was this more evident than at last year's LIV Golf UK by JCB event held at the stunning JCB Golf & Country Club, where myself and my colleague Dan Parker were fortunate enough to be in attendance. Very different from any professional tournament I have attended before, it was a dynamic fusion of competition golf and background entertainment that really made me reassess what a golf event can be. Indeed, with its innovative approach to fan engagement and entertainment, the JCB stop has quickly cemented its status as potentially the Tour's best event yet.

"Golf but louder"

From the moment we stepped onto the meticulously manicured grounds of the JCB Golf & Country Club, we were immersed in an environment designed for fun and excitement. The air buzzed with an energy rarely associated with the golf course, thanks in large part to the omnipresent on-course and driving range music, which provided a lively soundtrack to the day's proceedings. This immediate shift from hushed reverence to an upbeat, almost celebratory mood signaled that this was golf, but louder (as LIV says!) – and undeniably more engaging.

Central to the unique fan experience was the now-legendary "party hole." This isn't your typical par-3 where polite applause is the norm; instead, the party hole at JCB erupted with fan challenges and personalized walk-on songs for each player, transforming a standard golf shot into more of a theatrical spectacle. The crowd's roars and cheers created an electric amphitheater, turning every tee shot into a moment of collective anticipation and celebration, where the line between spectator and participant blurred, fostering an inclusive atmosphere that really caught the attention of both the die-hard golf fans and the more casual attendees alike.

Beyond the fairways and greens, the JCB event catered to every facet of the fan experience. Thirsty and hungry attendees found solace and camaraderie at the unique, themed refreshment zones, such as The "Digger Inn," a playful nod to JCB's iconic machinery, which offered a relaxed spot for a drink and a bite. Similarly, the "Majesticks Arms," a fan club favorite, became a boisterous hub for supporters of the Majesticks GC team, adding a nice layer of team spirit and friendly rivalry to the festivities. These dedicated areas provided more than just sustenance; they were social epicenters where fans could connect, discuss the action, and soak in the vibrant atmosphere, and the likes of Poulter and Stenson would even pop in from time to time!

Adding to the interactive elements, the event also featured engaging competitions like a keepie-uppie challenge, which was predictably dominated by the younger generation from what we could see! Touches like this encouraged active participation, offering fans a chance to test their own skills and walk away with a memorable souvenir of their day. For families, the Fan Village was a popular spot, brimming with sports activities, interactive entertainment, and even a JCB sand pit for the youngest attendees, ensuring that the event was a fun-packed day out for all ages.

The success of the LIV Golf UK event at JCB Golf & Country Club was undeniable, with over 37,000 fans flocking through the gates in 2024, making it the most successful LIV Golf event ever staged in the UK. This overwhelming response underscores the appeal of LIV's innovative approach and was also aided by some gorgeous weather! By blending top-level golf with a dynamic, festival-like atmosphere, complete with interactive fan zones, live music, and unique hospitality offerings, LIV Golf at JCB has created an event very different from traditional golf tournaments.
