Golf Monthly's week that was

Golf Monthly review a busy week on the May equipment supplement and round up all the latest equipment, Tour and industry news

Odyssey Black Series i 2-ball putter

With the US Masters just around the corner and the sun making the odd appearance, the ‘real’ golf season is very much upon us. For this reason it has been a busy week at GM Towers as the team has been hard at work on the May equipment supplement. Never has it been so apparent how many clubs are out there for a wide range of golfers. With our reviews, compiled by golfers, for golfers, there really is no excuse for not starting the new season well prepared.

The must-have gadget for 2009 – if you’re a fan – is the golf GPS system or distance-measuring device. In simple terms, it acts as your caddie without starting a war or words with your nearest rival. They’re not everyone’s cup of tea as we note from this month’s online poll, but we’ve tested a selection of them and the feedback is generally positive. Starting at £100 up to a top-end price of £299, it might be just what you need. As ever, it’s been great to read your opinion in the Golf Monthly Forum.

On Tour, and despite a brief, albeit entertaining, comeback from Tiger Woods at the WGC-Accenture Match Play, Australian Geoff Ogilvy defeated Paul Casey in a disappointing final for the Englishman. This week, as the European Tour takes a break, some top names, including Rory McIlroy and Sergio Garcia, headed to Florida for the Honda Classic. Hopefully you’ve read our preview and betting guide in an effort to beat the bookies and pocket yourself some extra cash.

Talking of cash, we gave you the heads-up on Odyssey’s €1 million putt giveaway. Okay, so you’ll have to sink a 100-foot putt, but you have to be in it to win it and if you’re buying an Odyssey putter, then it has to be worth a shout. Odyssey also feature in the April issue as we give you the the heads-up on the new Black Series i 2-ball putter.

There are even more chances to win as in-house experts Jezz Ellwood and Alex Narey set the questions that, if answered correctly, will put you in with a chance of winning a mystery prize selected by the Editor, Mike Harris.

We’ll continue to bring you all the latest reviews, galleries and blogs as and when the new gear arrives, such as the new Callaway Big Bertha Diablo irons set for launch, snapped up and taken to the range by our very own Paul O’Hagan.

With the week nearly over, minds are now turning to the weekend’s play. It is fair to say that the golf bug has truly hit the GM office and the pre-match sledging for Sunday’s game at King’s Hill is in full flow. Some things never change…

Have a good weekend.
