Celtic Manor Wales Open preview
Local favourite Bradley Dredge is hoping to outclasss a high-class field in the last Wales Open to be held over the Roman Road Course.
Tournament: Celtic Manor Wales Open
Course: The Celtic Manor Resort, Roman Road Course
Prize Fund: £1,500,000
Course details: par 69, 6,743 yards. First played in 2000, this is the last time that the Wales Open will be contested over the Roman Road Course. The tournament will move to the resort?s new course, built especially for the 2010 Ryder Cup.
Key hole: The 485-yard par-4 17th is a monster of a hole and tests even the longest hitters. If the nerves are jangling on Sunday a par here will be gratefully received.
The lowdown: This is a tournament with an impressive list of past winners ? the names of Ryder Cup stars McGinley, Lawrie, Poulter and Jiménez have all graced the trophy in the past six years. Defending champion Robert Karlsson will be hoping to recapture the form that saw him walk away with this title last year but his biggest threat could come in the form of Retief Goosen ? the world number 10 plays for the first time. Local boy Bradley Dredge (pictured) will lead the home charge.
The contenders: Retief Goosen, Robert Karlsson, Bradley Dredge
