Hansen wins second BMW PGA Ch’ship
Anders Hansen birdied the first play-off hole to defeat Justin Rose and claim his second BMW PGA Championship.
Anders Hansen claimed his second BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth on Sunday after defeating Justin Rose in a play-off at the first extra hole.
Heavy rain meant that Wentworth?s West Course was playing longer than ever during the final round and a number of players held the lead only to let it slip.
Overnight leaders Paul Broadhurst and Ross Fisher saw their chances of victory disappear with rounds of 80 and 84 respectively.
South Africa's Richard Sterne was in contention throughout the day but ultimately a 74 was only good enough to tie for third. He finished on seven under with Vijay Singh who moved up the field with an impressive final-round 66.
Singh held the clubhouse lead for much of the day until Denmark's Hansen (pictured) birdied the last to post a 69 and a total of eight under par. This left Rose needing a birdie down the last to force a play-off which he achieved with a superb wedge which span back to within inches of the hole.
With the 18th playing extremely long both players were forced to lay up in the play-off. Hansen then hit his third shot to 12 feet and holed a great putt for birdie. Rose missed from a similar distance handing Hansen the title and a winner's cheque of ?725,000.
