Colin Montgomerie shot a final-round 66 to secure his maiden Major title in the Senior PGA Championship at Harbor Shores Golf Club in Michigan.

The Scotsman, who turned 50 last year, was making his first appearance in the tournament.

Until his victory, Monty, who won eight successive European Tour Order of Merit titles between 1993 and 1999, hadn't triumphed on American soil or tasted success in a Major Championship.

He compiled rounds of 69, 69 and 68 to head into Sunday one clear of prolific senior golfer Bernhard Langer.

He offset a birdie at the first with a bogey at the fourth, but notched six birdies in eight holes from the 8th to give himself a commanding lead over 64-year-old Tom Watson, who compiled a final-round 65.

He looked completely at ease, and parred 16 and 17 before a fortuitous ricochet onto the green off the grandstands surrounding the 72nd hole set up a long-overdue victory.

"I learned today to concentrate on me, and possibly haven't in the past," said Montgomerie.

"I feel fantastic, really superb. There's a motto - if you fail and fail, you come back and try again.

"I've had a couple of failures here in America and close calls, especially in major championships, and it's great to finally win, never mid a Champions Tour event, but a Senior PGA Championship."

Montgomerie - who also earned an invite to the 2014 PGA Championship - finished four ahead of Watson, with Langer and Jay Haas sharing third.
