Dustin Johnson wants the chance to 'get it done'

The American has missed opportunities this year to win his first major.

Dustin Johnson has said he is focused on getting into a position on Sunday to win his first major at the USPGA Championship.

Speaking after his round yesterday, the 31-year-old said opening up a small lead isn't important to him at this stage.

"If you're talking like a five or six shot lead, I want the lead, for sure," he said.

"All I'm looking for is a chance to get it done on the back nine on Sunday."

He also lead after two rounds at the Open last month, but fell away over the weekend to ensure his wait for a first major would continue.

Johnson said the key to him finding more consistency at Whistling Straits is to be patient.

"When you try to push and try to make things happen, that's when you can make some big numbers at the majors," he said.

"Right now, today, I really felt like I had my ball under control a lot like I did at the U.S. Open. So I feel a lot more comfortable right now

"We'll just are have to see what happens. It's only the first round, we've still got a lot of golf to play."

Johnson's playing partners Jason Day and Rickie Fowler finished their first rounds with scores of -4 and +1 respectively.

World no. 1 Rory McIlroy shot a round of -1 after returning from an ankle injury sustained before the Open.
