The AO2 design is particularly well-suited to players with smooth to moderate tempos, rather than those with super brisk or snappy transitions at the top. How We Test Shafts

All of our shaft testing is conducted using the same TaylorMade Qi35 core head driver set to a precise 9 degrees (measured), with each shaft cut to an exact length of 45.5 inches, fitted with a Golf Pride Tour Velvet 60R grip. Furthermore, all testing shots are struck from a white castle tee to ensure consistent tee height during testing.

The data is collected and recorded using a Foresight Sports GC3 launch monitor and TaylorMade TP5x golf balls.

The engineering philosophy behind the AO2 centers around Aretera’s proprietary PowerGrid carbon fiber material, designed to maximize structural integrity and energy transfer without adding dead weight.

What makes the AO2 lineup particularly clever is its single-variable design concept. Across both available colorways - Blue and Gray - the handle and mid-sections feature identical EI profiles: an active, smooth handle section paired with a firm mid-section for torsional stability.

The only differentiating feature between the two is tip stiffness, where the AO2 Gray features a 7% stiffer tip section than the AO2 Blue. By keeping the upper two-thirds of the shaft identical, Aretera allows fitters and players to dial in launch, spin, and tip activity without altering the overall feel under the hands.

Weight & Flex Tested: 65/5 (Driver) & 75/5 (3-Wood)

As I just noted, with both the Blue and Gray profiles, you are essentially dealing with the same baseline shaft, simply tweaked at the tip section. In the Blue profile, that slightly more active tip delivered a touch more dynamic loft through impact for me - but as always, make sure to test this, as it can have the exact opposite effect depending on your release type.

During testing, I really enjoyed the active handle section; it offered a wonderfully smooth and easy sensation under the hands from the transition through to release. What stood out most in terms of performance was my consistency of center contact. I personally found center-face impacts a little easier to dial in with the Blue profile in both my driver and fairway wood.

Interestingly, in the Gray profile I noticed one or two more low strikes on the face during my session. This suggests to me that the slightly softer tip and additional shaft droop of the Blue profile allowed the center of the clubhead to drop a touch lower at impact, aligning perfectly with my natural delivery path.

Choose This Shaft If:

You have a smooth to moderate tempo and prefer a lively, high-energy tip response.

You benefit from a fraction more shaft droop to find the center of the face.

Weight & Flex Tested: 65/5 (Driver) & 75/5 (3-Wood)

Stepping into the AO2 Gray profile, the 7% increase in tip stiffness immediately subtly tightens up the bottom end of the swing while retaining that same smooth handle feel.

The consistency of both shafts was simply off the charts good. The Gray profile delivered the clubhead with identical timing and feel swing after swing, resulting in exceptionally tight start directions and repeatable dispersion patterns.

For golfers who tend to over-launch the ball or fight a hook when a tip section gets too active, the Gray profile offers that added bit of structural control at impact without in any way feeling harsh or boardy.
