Young guns set for battle of Brabazon
Nick Dougherty, Rory McIlroy, Chris Wood, Oliver Wilson and Pablo Larrazabal have all announced they will be taking part in the Quinn Insurance British Masters
The Quinn Insurance British Masters is fast approaching and with £1.8million up for grabs, many of the golfing world's young guns are lining up for the Battle of the Brabazon. Nick Dougherty, Rory McIlroy, Chris Wood, Oliver Wilson and Pablo Larrazabal have all announced they will be taking part in the golf extravaganza at The Belfry from 25th - 28th September.
Latest hot shot Chris Wood hopes to build on his Open success where he was awarded the Silver Medal for finishing as leading amateur. The rookie turned pro a week after the Open and will be looking to avoid a trip to Qualifying School with a strong finish at the Quinn Insurance British Masters. "Obviously there is a lot of pressure to perform when starting out on the professional ranks but I've played some great golf on the European Tour already and I'll be looking to make the most of my invite and challenging for the top spot."
Northern Ireland star Rory McIlroy shot to fame when he made his professional debut at the Quinn Insurance British Masters last year at the age of just 18. He is currently embarking on his first full season as a pro and is hoping his return to The Belfry will secure his maiden European Tour win. Speaking ahead of the tournament, McIlroy said: "Last year's Quinn Insurance British Masters marked a huge step up in my career and I look forward to returning to The Belfry this year with more professional experience under my belt - it's going to be a welcome challenge."
Oliver Wilson, 27, has emerged as one to watch this season and has finished as runner-up no less than four times on the European Tour. The Englishman, who is on the brink of a coveted Ryder Cup spot, will be hoping to go one better as he returns to his homeland. Fellow English star Nick Dougherty, 26, finished second at the SAS Masters in Sweden and will be looking to continue this form and end the season on a positive note.
Pablo Larrazabal, 25, is the final young player to announce his presence at The Belfry. The Spaniard's win at the French Open in July ended with a dip in the 18th green lake and the talented youngster will be fishing for another victory at the Quinn Insurance British Masters.
Andrew 'Chubby' Chandler, Managing Director of event promoters International Sports Management said; "It's always interesting to anticipate how the younger players will perform at the Quinn Insurance British Masters - it's a tough course and with some renowned players already confirmed the battle really is on. The young players always inject some excitement and unpredictability into the game and everyone likes to see emerging talent fight to rise in the ranks."
In contrast, Darren Clarke, fresh from winning at the KLM Open at the weekend and now hopeful of a Ryder Cup wild card, has already confirmed he will be playing at The Belfry so there will be plenty of favourites at the renowned event.
