Whistling Straits hole by hole - 18 - Dyeabolical / 500 yards / Par 4
This can be fairly considered one of the trickiest closing holes in world golf. A drive is required up the right side of the fairway, but must not be hit too well as the fairway runs away from you with rough and sand waiting for your ball.
After a good drive, you will still find yourself with a long-iron approach to an enormous green that measures over 18,000 square feet. If the leading player comes down this hole on Sunday afternoon needing a four and manages to make one, they will certainly be a deserving winner of the Wanamaker Trophy.
On this hole at the 2010 USPGA Championship, Dustin Johnson was given a two-shot penalty for grounding his club in a bunker...only he didn't realise he was in a bunker. The American struck his iron shot, surrounded by spectators at the very edge of the hole, unaware that the sand he was playing from was a classified bunker.
In fairness to Johnson, he appeared to be on a sandy patch of ground rather than in a traditional bunker as we know them. Yet, the rules were clear that sandy areas would be deemed bunkers and he was made to take the penalty that derailed his hopes of making the eventual play-off.
