How Day won, and who wants Spieth to run for President?
It was Jason's day by the evening....
Jason Day of Australia poses with the Wanamaker Trophy. In winning his first Major, Jason Day became the first player to finish a Major Championship at 20 under par. He also became the first Australian to win the US PGA Championship since Steve Elkington beat Colin Montgomerie in a play-off in 1995. Although it is Day’s first win in 21 Major starts he has a consistently good record in Majors with ten top ten finishes, seven of which were also top-4 finishes.
Herbert V. Kohler, Jr., Executive Chairman of Kohler Co, the firm which owns and built the course, greets Jordan Spieth on the 1st tee. It was Kohler who named the course while walking around the land during the construction of the golf course. “The name came to mind quite naturally as it was a particularly blustery day, a north-to-south gale was whistling along the bluffs, and white caps were breaking on the rocky shoreline – the straits – of Lake Michigan.”
There are more than a thousand bunkers at Whistling Straits and many of them have had their sand rearranged during this tournament. In building The Straits, 7,000 truckloads of sand - approximately 105,000 cubic yards - were brought to the site. Maintenance of the bunkers is intended to be natural by the elements, primarily the wind; staff maintenance is minimal. Here Jordan Spieth does a bit of redistribution on the 4th hole.
These fans will have to be patient. To be the US President you have to be born in the United States and be at least 40 years of age. Dallas-born Jordan Spieth qualifies on the first count – but he is only 22 years old. There are still five US Presidential Elections and 84 Major Championships to go before Spieth could become President.
Jordan Spieth and Jason Day of Australia walk along the 7th hole at Whistling Straits. The course includes two miles of uninterrupted shoreline on Lake Michigan with eight holes hugging this shoreline.
