GINN SUR MER CLASSIC

Yet another new course and tournament showcases this week as part of the PGA Tour Fall Series. Though the lack of course form again makes it very hard to form a confident opinion, it may not turn out to be a lottery. Rather like last week?s excellent test, I have a suspicion that the Palmer Course at Tesoro GC will produce a decent winner.

Tesoro is one of the longest courses of the year, but also one that rewards positional play to avoid the wetlands and various hazards. Furthermore, Palmer courses tend to reward quality iron play, favouring the very best and I?m assuming this will be no exception. None of the world?s top-40 are in attendance so this could be a good opportunity for a handful of classy players who?ve enjoyed a good summer without winning to put the record straight before the season is out.

There are few more promising American golfers than LUCAS GLOVER and SEAN O?HAIR, both of whom look well overdue for a win. Glover hasn?t played competitive golf since the BMW Championship 6 weeks ago, so we?ll have to hope he isn?t too rusty. Before the break he?d had consecutive top-15 finishes amongst the elite company of the Fedex Cup play-offs. Glover?s sole victory came exactly 2 years ago this weekend in Florida, and he?s proved his liking for golf in that state since, making the top-5 twice. After another very consistent season, he must hold every chance in this company.

O?Hair looked right back to his best at the weekend. A tie for 4th place was just about the worst he could have finished after some disastrous holes at the end of his third and fourth rounds. That was his third good effort in his last 4 US starts, and if it continues a second career win is surely just around the corner.

I must admit I was surprised to see CARL PETTERSSON perform so badly when holding the lead on Sunday, as in the past he?s looked to have a rock-solid winning temperament. In hindsight, the strong winds may have been a factor as the big Swede has under-performed previously in very windy conditions. Nevertheless, Sunday?s 5th was his third top-10 in his last four events, form that suggests he should be a very strong contender again this week.

And last but by no means least, Australian ROBERT ALLENBY looks good value at 33/1. Allenby, four times a PGA Tour winner not to mention the other 15 worldwide, looks to have the right statistical strengths for this week?s test. In particular he has impressed in the crucial greens in regulation department recently. Before missing the cut in Arizona last weekend, he had shown good form against the very best, finishing 8th at TPC Boston and 11th at East Lake. He also has a good record in Florida, making the top-6 six times since 2003 in that state.
