Frazar shoots a scintillating 59 in Q-School
Harrison Frazar leads the PGA Tour Q-School after the fifth round on a 90-hole score of 333, 27-under par.
Harrison Frazar leads the PGA Tour Q-School after the fifth round on a 90-hole score of 333, 27-under par.
Frazar’s lead is largely down to an outstanding 59 he shot on Saturday at the Jack Nicklaus course at PGA West, La Quinta. The enduring number of 59 has only ever been shot once in Q-School, and that was eight years ago by David Gossett.
Winless in 300 starts on the PGA Tour, Frazar fired a superb 30 on the front nine on Saturday, then hit seven straight birdies on the back nine, including a 35ft putt on the 17th. Frazar even had a shot at a 58, but his birdie putt on the last just missed the right edge.
"I thought that was going to go in," said Frazar about his putt at 18. "Sitting there on that green, I told myself to do the exact same rhythm, same routine, everything that you've done all day and hit the best putt you can. I thought I hit a great putt."
Nevertheless, Frazar was more than happy with his historic round. "The 59 is nice," said Frazar. "That is something I will always have with me, and is something I am very proud of,” said Frazar.
Sunday’s round of 69 by Frazar was none too shabby either and gives him a five-shot lead with one round remaining in Q-School. The lowest 25 scores after the final round on Monday will receive PGA Tour cards for next year.
