US Open qualification took place yesterday, with big names both making it and missing out.

Qualification for the US Open took place yesterday, with Luke Donald among those earning his spot at Chambers Bay next week.

The Englishman secured his place in Jupiter, Florida, after taking a route that would have been inconceivable a few years ago when he was world No. 1.

Donald is currently at 66 in the world rankings and finished T18  in his most recent outing at the Irish Open.

Former champion Lee Janzen also qualified, 17 years after he won the tournament. The 50-year-old, who also won in 1993, hasn't played the US Open since 2008.

One of the stories of the day was undoubtedly 15-year-old Cole Hammer sealing his spot with a win in Dallas.

Hammer shot 64 in his first round, but won't be the youngest ever player in the field, as Andy Zhang was 14 when he played in 2012.

Other notable players to have qualified include 2004 champion Retief Goosen, Michael Putnam, who grew up near Chambers Bay, and Camilo Villegas.

Players who failed to do enough to qualify include Steve Stricker, Vijay Singh, David Lingmerth and Harris English.

Stricker has been an ever-present at the US Open since 2005, but he couldn't get over the line in Columbus, Ohio.

Lingmerth had been victorious in Ohio on Sunday when he beat Justin Rose in a play-off to win the Memorial Tournament. However, the state wasn't so kind to him yesterday, as he too fell in Columbus.

During the course of the day ten amateurs qualified, including England's Sam Horsfield, who will now miss the Amateur Championship in Scotland next week.

The following players have also qualified:

Columbus, Ohio - Daniel Summerhays, George McNeill, Ryo Ishikawa, Bo Van Pelt, Brad Fritsch, Cameron Smith, Sam Saunders, Bryson DeChambeau (a), Robert Streb, Danny Lee, D.A. Points and David Hearn.
