Breaking 90: one week to go
An update on Ping Play Your Best challenger Robert Edwards, who is hoping to break 90
With just a week to go before the Golf Monthly ‘Play Your best' Final I thought it would be an appropriate time to update you on my progress. Following on from the highs of the Westwood Day I have to say that August was somewhat of a low, it's the first time during the PYB experience that I felt I wasn't progressing as I would like. In fact, I actually went backwards!
The result of this was also another first - I began to question the whole PYB challenge, why am I putting myself through this? How can I enjoy playing golf when all I think about is reducing my handicap? Everybody seems to be asking me ‘what is my handicap now?' The final disappointment became apparent during a lesson with Golf Monthly top 25 coach Steve Robinson, my swing had become very flat and unattached. Why is this happening now, I thought? Fortunately, this childish sulk didn't last long and I got to work in putting it right with some quality practice time and a new and improved attitude.
I steadied the ship with a 1 over net 71 in the September Medal followed by a pleasing 39pts in the September Stableford, reducing my handicap to 18.1 and propelling me to the top of the KP Club order of merit.
That takes us to the present day - How do I fancy my chances of breaking 90 around the Karsten Lakes course? Well, if I play to my handicap I should be in with a shout, just hope for a fine day's weather, keep it simple and don't do anything stupid, easy (fingers crossed)!
