The ten-man squad for the Walker Cup has been announced which now leaves team captain Colin Dalgleish with the task of forming parings and establishing team chemistry before the competition begins on the September 12.
Despite being labelled as the final squad, however, the named team could still be changed if an an unnamed British or Irish amateur is victorious at the US amateur championship scheduled for the end of this month. With this being an unlikely occurrence though, the side looks to be in good shape to mount a challenge to claim back the trophy last won by the home nations in 2003.
It is testament to the impressive organisation of the amateur game at the highest level, that all members of the squad are already well acquainted with each other, largely through the championships of the various national golf unions. Despite this though, captain Dalgleish has organised a ‘bonding’ trip to the Valderrama complex in Spain in the week leading up to the event in the hope that a further sense of unity can be established.
It is believed that such meticulous advanced preparations, will give the team the best possible opportunity to claim victory in the middle section of next month, following the disappointing result for the 2007 squad at Royal County Down, Ireland.
The 2009 Walker Cup matches will be played at Merion Golf Club, Pennsylvania, on September 12.
