Elwyn Ellis accepts EGU Presidency for 2010
Elwyn Ellis, a past President of Cheshire, has accepted the nomination to become President Elect of the English Golf Union for the year 2009 with a view to becoming President in 2010
Elwyn Ellis said I m absolutely flabbergasted, I never thought I d be considered so I couldn t be more surprised.
Elwyn was born in Stockport in 1927 and spent most of his early years in Lytham St Anne s, being educated at the King Edward VII School. He learned the game at Lytham Green Drive but his business career in the textile industry took him to Manchester.
He joined Prestbury Golf Club in 1956 and is now an Honorary Life Member, having been captain in 1979 and president in 1980. He is also a member of Royal Lytham and St Anne s and Royal Dornoch Golf Clubs.
Elwyn joined the Cheshire Executive in 1985, was county President in 1989 and chairman of the Northern Group of the EGU from 1996-98. He spent a long spell on the EGU Council representing Cheshire and is now a vice president and trustee of the Cheshire Union of Golf Clubs.
His lowest handicap was eight but he now plays regular social and society golf off 21. He is a member of the Blasters Golfing Society and the Optics GS and has been Captain and President of both.
Curiously, he will be the third member of the Blasters to become EGU President following Ted Hill (1974) and John Bennett (1997).
Elwyn has been married to Dorothy for 56 years and they have two sons, Roger and Richard, and a daughter Nicola.

I am really looking forward to 2010 now that I ve got over the shock, added Elwyn. It is quite an honour to be President but I enjoy watching golf and the atmosphere created.
Elwyn is the fifth President to come from Cheshire in the past 20 years. Peter Dutton held the post in 1989, Stuart Cookson in 1994, John Bennett in 1997 and Fred Caröe in 2005.
