5 Golf Grip Checkpoints
For consistent driving it's crucial to get the fundamentals right starting with the grip of your golf club
Golf Monthly Top 25 Coach John Jacobs offers his 5 golf grip checkpoints to ensure yours is technically sound to help you deliver the club correctly to the ball
There is no getting away from it, a good golf grip is essential. As your only point of contact with the club it dictates swing path, swing plane and power. That's why it makes sense to have a system to test it - here are my 5 golf grip checkpoints.
Here's how you can use two gloves to gain the perfect golf grip.
Mark dots on the knuckle of your right index finger and on the knuckles of your left index and middle fingers. Then draw lines pointing towards your right shoulder from the crease between the thumb and forefinger of both hands.
Watch this video on how to set the perfect golf grip.
You should be able to see all the dots and lines when you address the ball.In this position your hands will be able to hinge the club correctly and release it powerfully through the ball. You'll also find it much easier to get the club working on the correct path. This is why the golf grip is such an important fundamental.

Spend some time on the range with this golf grip until it feels natural. This might seem a little mechanical but having two marked up grips you can use to check your technical will really help you. As you hit more and more balls on the range, make sure you check your grip pressure as well.
As you play your way through the competition season use these 5 golf grip checkpoints every couple of weeks. Small changes will happen and being able to return to neutral is essential if you want to play consistently good golf. The grip might not be the most exciting area of the game but it is one of the most important and time spent on this in practice is never wasted.
