Arkin Group Developments presented a proposal to the Elmbridge Borough Council on Friday (9 April) to build the world's first undergound 5-star hotel at the Hersham Golf Club in Surrey.
Pending approval, the club will soon begin development on the £72 million ReardonSmith-designed hotel. Sidharth Bhatia, the new project leader from ReardonSmith, says that the 22, 000 sq m hotel design includes many enticing features for golfers.
"Our concept integrates hotel, spa and golf facilities into a unified and architecturally stunning underground design. Through the combination of innovative design and intelligent building technology we are replacing existing surface buildings with subterranean ones, enhancing the landscape and visually returning land to the green belt. It represents a pioneering vision and is a world first," he said.
Other features of the 198 room hotel will include upgrading the golf course as well as the surrounding landscape by planting new trees and shrubs that are customary to the area. Also, a new access road to alleviate traffic congestion to the club and hotel will be implemented from Esher Road, as well as an underground car parking measuring over 10,000 sq m.
