No 11 - Lahinch - Old
Lahinch sits just outside the Top 10, but the recent Hawtree renovation work makes this links a must-play. Some of the views are truly inspiring
11 LAHINCH – Old
Architect: T Morris 2006 position: 11 Stats: 6,613 yds; par 72; SSS 73 GF: €165-€205 T: 00353 65 708 1003 W: lahinchgolf.com
Martin Hawtree’ s brief was to reinstate as much of the 1920s Alistair MacKenzie redesign as possible, a task he completed in 2003.
The links is full of humps and hollows and boasts a number of expertly-placed bunkers to catch out wayward shots.
I wasn’t sure about the par-5 4th hole, where you have to play a blind second over a large sandhill and through the 18th fairway to reach the green.
But the 12th is a great par 5, running along the estuary and the course has a very strong finish from the 14th in.
There are excellent views of the sea, nearby beaches, the estuary and headlands. SP
