Rumours are circulating in the world press that Rory McIlroy and Erica Stoll have got engaged after the Northern Irishman popped the question in Paris

Rumours are circulating in the world press that Rory McIlroy and Erica Stoll have got engaged on a recent trip to Paris.

The couple are in the French capital at the moment and Rory posted a picture of the Eiffel Tower on Twitter on Thursday, but he didn’t drop any hint that he'd asked the important question.

However, reports are now circulating that he dropped on one knee at the Eiffel Tower.

Rory McIlroy and Erica Stoll first met at the Ryder Cup in 2012 in slightly bizarre fashion after Stoll, who is Championship Volunteer Operations at the PGA of America, helped McIlroy out after he nearly missed his Sunday tee time on one of the most famous days in Ryder Cup history at Medinah.

Having just made it in time,  and then going on to beat Keegan Bradley 2&1, McIlroy helped Europe win in the most remarkable style possible.

Since that chance encounter, the pairs’ relationship has grown and he told the Daily Mail earlier this year: “I am very happy in my love life. If everything off the golf course is good, it allows you to be better on it as well.”

Rory McIlroy and Erica Stoll were spotted publicly for the first time at the Irish Open at the end of May and the couple have been together for about a year, with Stoll attending several of his tournaments. Most notably, they recently posed alongside his family with the Race to Dubai Trophy after the final round of DP World Tour Championship in late November.

The rumoured engagement comes just a year after McIlroy split-up with tennis star Caroline Wozniacki in May 2014, when the 26-year-old broke off their engagement just days after the wedding invitations to New York had been sent out.

After that split, McIlroy claimed he wanted to concentrate completely on his golf, so the new news may come as a surprise to some.
