The well-loved Fred Bullock, who led the 1959 Open Championship at Muirfield, has passed away at the age of 88, after a long battle with Motor Neurone Disease. Bullock took the Scottish links by storm that year, firing a superb 68 in the first round before finishing runner-up to South Africa?s Gary Player. Golf Monthly catalogued the Englishman?s achievement in the August 1959 issue, with the following;
?Bullock?s emergence as the pace-setter, and eventual finish as joint runner-up, surprised many. It should not have done so. He has long been one of the best professionals in Britain.?
During that special week Fred was accompanied by his daughter Sandra who caddied for him (pictured). He was also nominated for the Ryder Cup before World War Two broke out. After retiring from the professional game he took up teaching golf and taught celebrities including Graham Hill and members of the double winning 1971 Arsenal side. He will be sadly missed by his two daughters Sandra and Freida as well as his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
