‘I Smashed My Medal Score By 20 Shots’ - One Golfer’s 4-Month Ping Transformation

Swapping a full bag for a streamlined, app-recommended Ping G Le4 setup - here is what happened to one golfer's game

Back in May, I joined Gillian Anderson for a Ping G Le4 club fitting. Now, four months later, I caught up with her at her home club, Felixstowe Ferry, to find out what difference the clubs have made to her game.

Just to recap: Gillian started her fitting process on her sofa using the Ping WebFit Ladies App, which recommends ideal bag setups based on physical measurements and playing tendencies. The app prescribed a streamlined, 8-club bag (driver, 5-wood, 7-hybrid, 8-iron, 9-iron, PW, SW, and an Anser 2 D putter) designed with Ultra Lite shafts to maximise speed and remove redundant clubs.

When we visited Ping HQ in Gainsborough to test the prescription on the launch monitor, the app's recommendations proved almost identical to Nick Boulton’s expert data, needing only minor human adjustments for a past back injury (a slightly more upright lie angle) and swapping the 8-iron for a confidence-boosting 8-hybrid.

Four months on, Gillian locked her old set in the garage, sold them to avoid temptation, and committed fully to her new setup. The results speak for themselves: her handicap has dropped from 31.1 down to 28.9, and she even smashed her best-ever medal score by 20 shots. Here is what happened when we sat down to talk through her journey.

When you first took your new G Le4s out on the course, what were you hoping they would change about your game?

I was hoping for magic, really! They look so beautiful, but reality kicked in fast. My first game was surprisingly good, though the putter took some getting used to. Even though it was a similar Anser style to my old one, the head is slightly larger and heavier.”

Were you tempted to sneak a few of your old clubs back into the bag at the start?

Absolutely! But I’ve actually sold my old set now because I didn't want to be tempted back. When you have a bad round, you think, "If I just pop my old 7-iron back in..." But that’s not the answer. You have to trust the process and go with it.

How do you feel about your streamlined bag setup compared to your old set?

It was quite frightening initially because I thought I was missing so many clubs. I used to have a bag full of clubs that I just took for a walk! But now? No, I don't miss them at all. It takes away the bad choices on the course.

You had never played hybrids before this fitting, and suddenly you had a 7 and 8-hybrid in the bag. How was that transition?

I struggled with them at first, so I went and had a word with our club pro. I just asked, "What am I doing wrong?" He explained that even though they look a bit like woods, you hit them like irons. That simple tweak fixed it immediately. Now, I prefer hitting them to irons, in fact, I’ve just ordered the 6-hybrid to bridge the gapping for the autumn!

Has the change in gapping forced you to use any clubs you used to ignore?

Oddly enough, my 9-iron. I almost never used my old 9-iron, it was practically brand new when I got rid of it. Now that I’m forced to use it, I love it. It’s become my go-to club out there; it just feels very safe, positive, and perfectly weighted. Having undersized grips fitted made a massive difference, too.

What has been the biggest shift in your performance and average scoring?

My short game is so much better now. I actually bettered my medal score by 20 shots last month, which was huge for me, my best medal round ever. The clubs inspire confidence. When you look down at them, you feel like you can hit a great shot.

What is your next big goal with these clubs?

I would love to get down to a 25 handicap. That’s my target.

Looking back at the process, what do you think of the WebFit Ladies App now?

It was amazing. It’s quite odd to think you can sit at home, use an app on your phone, and it accurately tells you what you need. After I brought the clubs back to Felixstowe Ferry, everyone wanted to look at them. The pro shop got a demo set in, and now about 8 to 10 women at our club have replaced some or all of their clubs with G Le4s! The technology is on another level compared to my original G Le set - it's really proved its worth.

The Verdict On The Fairways

After our catch-up, I joined Gillian on the course at Felixstowe Ferry for a few holes. Seeing her off the tee, the forgiveness of the new clubs was obvious straight away - even on slight mishits, her drives stayed remarkably straight.

But it was her new G Le4 hybrids that stole the show. Watching her use them to consistently launch high, straight shots through the Suffolk breeze, a shot shape she previously struggled to generate with her irons, was proof enough that a proper custom setup beats guesswork every time.

The WebFit app proves it can eliminate intimidation and pinpoint a player's baseline needs, while a touch of professional fine-tuning delivers the ultimate confidence boost.

For Gillian, taking the fear out of fitting didn't just yield a shiny new set of clubs, it shaved two strokes off her handicap. And as she prepares for her upcoming year as Lady Captain at Felixstowe Ferry, she'll be stepping onto the 1st tee with a career-best score under her belt, and total confidence in every club.
