Aberystwyth GC

Aberystwyth was once one of the largest seaside resorts in Wales and Edwardian demand for golf was high.

When a parcel of land became available in 1910 a meeting was called at the town hall by local golfers. Harry Vardon drew up the designs and four months later ten holes had been carved from this rough piece of agricultural land blanketed by gorse.

The course has been toughened up since Vardon's grand designs. Most of the bunkers were grass but in 1962 they were filled with sand. The tees have been pushed back on the par-70 course to 6119 yards from the white tees and the greens enlarged.

The course opens with a 431-yard par four, lengthened by the fact that it's uphill. There is ample opportunity for this course to land you into a tight spot. A ditch lies in front of the green on the fourth and the green on the 536-yard par-five 10th is protected by water in front of the green.

A challenging course that is made all the more enjoyable by it's fantastic views. It's difficult not to linger over the birdseye view of Aberystwyth town in one direction and the mountains in the other from the 17th tee.
