New Titleist 716 CB irons launched

Titleist has unveiled its latest cavity back better-player iron, but the new Titleist 716 CB irons are quite unlike any that have come before them, thanks to the introduction of high density tungsten.

Sitting alongside the new 716 AP1, AP2, MB and TM-B irons, the CB combines a modern cavity blade with high density tungsten to deliver shotmaking control with moment of inertia (MOI) levels 12 per cent higher than the Titleist 714 CB irons they replace.

In fact, the forgiveness of the new 716 CB is now comparable to the Titleist 714 AP2 model, such are the gains that have been made.

Titleist 716 CB irons review

“With this new CB, we are effectively bringing the high-tech construction of our AP2 platform to the cavity back blade category,” Marni Ines, director of Titleist irons development, told GM.

“Thanks to our co-forging process, we can now shape the tungsten weights exactly to the perimeter of the head, which allows us to place the centre of gravity exactly where we want it for more speed. At the same time we’ve been able to increase forgiveness to a previously unforeseen level."

As well as this technology, a new co-forged construction helps maintain feel off the face for better shot feedback, while compact heads, constant blade lengths and minimal progressive offset encourage workability.

Chris McGinley, Titleist Golf Club Marketing vice president, explained to GM: “The technology we’ve added to 716 CB puts this iron in a class by itself in terms of MOI and forgiveness, and makes it clearly stand out among traditional blades. The new co-forged construction and addition of high density tungsten weighting gives CB an added kick with unprecedented forgiveness in a traditional blade size.”

Like the new 716 AP2, MB and T-MB irons, the CB model also features 'Pre-Worn' leading edges that deliver less dig, for a faster and smoother transition into and out of the turf.

Titleist 716 CB irons specifcations

The Titleist 716 CB iron's stock shafts are the True Temper Dynamic Gold AMT (Ascending Mass Technology), which feature lighter long iron shafts for higher launch and faster speed, and heavier short iron shafts for more workability and control.

The 716 CB irons will be available from 23rd October 2015, and will retail at £117 per iron in steel and £133 per iron in graphite.
