How To Choose Your Wedge Setup In Golf
Short game specialist James Ridyard, in partnership with PING, outlines how to find the right wedge setup for your golf game...
Whether you are a new golfer, someone who is in the market for new clubs or an experienced player looking to get the best out of their short game, having the right wedges in your bag is as important as getting the best golf tips.
With so many aspects to consider when choosing the best wedges, such as grind, bounce and loft, it can be an overwhelming process if you don't have the right advice.
That's where PING comes in, with their brilliant Web Fit Wedge App. In this video and article, Short Game Specialist Coach James Ridyard explains why using this simple tool could prove extremely beneficial to your performance around the greens...
How To Choose Your Wedge Setup Using The PING Web Fit Wedge App...
This straightforward process should take less than two minutes to complete, and is designed to allow players of any ability level to access the right advice. The PING Web Fit Wedge App will take you through a series of questions, and use your responses to create a couple of recommendations on the best wedges to suit your game. Let's take a look at some of the questions posed, and give a little more insight into why this information is important...
What Information Will I Need To Provide?
The first question is regarding your average score on the golf course. This is assessing your skill level so that PING can tailor the process to you as an individual.
The next question asks you how far your pitching wedge carries. This information helps to provide gapping information to fill the gap between how far your pitching wedge carries down to the partial wedge shots. As a bigger hitter, that gap increases and as a result you will need more wedges.
You will then be asked what the highest lofted wedge that you currently carry in your bag is. This helps PING to understand what type of shots you like to play around the green, such as high or low flighted shots.

A question on ground and sand conditions follows this, as this will determine which bounce and grinds are most suitable to you. An example of this would be if you typically play in firm, tight sand, you would therefore go for a lower bounce wedge to help the leading edge get under the sand.
Questions on divot length, which would indicate attack angle, and your preferred pitch shot technique (square or open face) come next, as if you prefer an open face you could potentially play a lower bounce wedge.
For the penultimate question, you will be asked to provide your standard ball position for a wedge shot, with two options provided – middle/forward or middle/back. This will indicate your attack angle, as a middle/back position will require a little more help from the bounce due to the steeper angle.
Finally, you will need to share your priority for wedge shots, with your most lofted wedge, from a list of options. This could be something like consistent bunker play or protecting against fat/thin shots.
The app will then generate what it calls your 'grind profile', and provide a side-by-side comparison of two options for you to consider from the PING wedge range. With a detailed breakdown of the benefits for each, you then have all the information you could need to make an informed decision about your next purchase.
