As the golfing year moves into the autumn and winter months, it’s a good time to be thinking about practice and improvement. Keen golfers want to keep playing and working on their games, even if the weather turns a little towards the inclement.

But how many of us have a clear plan when it comes to making a difference? Go to any driving range across the country this winter and you’ll see a row of players firing balls into the grey yonder with neither purpose nor objective. It passes the time and it might be quite enjoyable, but it’s not making them better at golf!

What all we golfers need this autumn/winter (and beyond) is a structured strategy for improving our games. We think HackMotion offers that… Interested?

It’s a golf swing trainer that analyses your swing, delivers feedback, then guidance, drills and support, whether you’re working with a coach or on your own.

We all have endless ideas about what might be going wrong when we’re playing poorly. “Perhaps I’m taking it away on the inside?” “Maybe I’m breaking my wrists too early?” … Maybe you are… How useful it would be to be given immediate feedback and data that can tell you what’s going wrong and what you can do to fix it.

HackMotion captures wrist angle data throughout the golf swing and delivers understandable insight on what is going right and what could be improved.

It’s a clever system, one that’s extremely intuitive and effective. There’s a comfortable device worn on palm and wrist that connects easily with an impressive app. When you swing, the device communicates with that app and the info is shown in clear terms – “You are casting,” for example… ‘Ah, yes, that explains it.’

Wrist movement is critical throughout the golf swing. If you have a coach, they will know that and will be delighted to identify problems in that area more easily. If you’re working on your own game, you need to know that, and you will be delighted to identify those problems more easily! Moreover, it’s crucial to put correct and effective reps into your practice, as incorrect motion can do more harm than good to your swing in the long-run.

Of course, every part of the body must work in unison to hit consistently good golf shots, but wrist angles are important within the combination of movements. If you are opening the face as you take the club away, you will struggle to consistently get that face back square. If you are cupping your wrist through the backswing, you might not get back to the ball on the right plane.

HackMotion measures the wrist angles and how they affect the swing and the results. It gives feedback to make the necessary adjustments through visual, audio and haptic cues.

Crucially, the system doesn’t simply say, “you’re doing this all wrong.” It looks for solutions!

Firstly, HackMotion will analyse shots. You only need to hit five for it to make a diagnosis. Let’s say, you have an excessive lead wrist extension that opens the clubface which could well mean you’re slicing it.

HackMotion will then give you a recommended drill to try to counter the fault. It will encourage you to see how it feels to make a different movement.

After those drills, it will ask you to re-test your swing. You’ll return to hitting normal shots, and the device and app will tell you if you’ve improved.

The process is – measure, understand, practice, re-test. That makes a whole lot of sense!

Most importantly, this happens through guided practice that builds muscle memory and helps create lasting improvement. Unlike training aids that force your arms into a specific position regardless of your address and setup, HackMotion helps you learn the right movement for your individual swing. This makes it easier to develop a natural, repeatable motion that you can transfer to your actual swing and take onto the course.

Something worth pointing out is that the whole thing is not complicated. A fear might be that you’ll be bombarded with data and graphs that are incomprehensible. HackMotion doesn’t do that. The feedback is clear, straightforward, easy to interpret and utilise, either by you or a coach/club pro.

Another thing worth pointing out – you can use HackMotion anywhere you can hit a ball, or a foam ball at home… that works too. There are also drills you can perform without even hitting a ball. So, you can practice your swing even in your living room without hitting a single ball.

There are different packages available depending on your requirements.

There’s Core, which includes full swing guided practice and a drills library. That’s pretty good if you’re going to use it for your own training and analysis for a start.

The Plus package includes all Core features and adds putting-guided practice and putting drills. Then – the Pro package includes all Plus features and adds advanced wrist metrics, Tour player comparisons and multiple player profiles.

A key thing to note on the packages is – it’s a one-time payment. There are no subscription fees, and the apps keep developing and improving with no extra cost. You can upgrade from Core to Plus or Pro at any time – (that will cost you a wee bit extra of course but it’s worth it!)

This winter is the time to give your practice a clearer purpose. Explore HackMotion Sensor 4 (probably Core to start with then move on) and see how guided practice can help you understand your swing, work on the right movement and check your progress.

We think it’s a great tool that could change your game!
