Volkswagen Masters 2007 – Ashridge

The Volkswagen Masters 2007 moved on to yet another Open Championship qualifying venue, the tranquil Ashridge Golf Club. Weather conditions were tough but the level of golf was fantastic as competitors looked to progress to the UK Final.

Ashridge winners

Despite being only 40 miles from central London, Ashridge is a serene escape situated in an area of outstanding beauty on the edge of the Chiltern Hills. On a wet June morning Volkswagen Masters competitors were greeted by grazing deer and beautiful countryside.

With the Home Counties Regional Final being held a day after the Ashbrigde Club Championship, the course was in immaculate condition and provided a tricky test. There were a number of heavy showers throughout the day but competitors carded some impressive scores, none more so that five-handicapper Dave Roberts (pictured right). The Group A competitor guaranteed his place in the UK Final with an impressive round of nett 66. This was comfortably the best score of the day and Roberts will surely begin the UK Final in September as one of the favorites. ?I didn?t drive the ball well but had a very good day on and around the greens which really helped. Usually my driving is my strength so I was delighted with my score,? said Roberts.

Sir Henry Cotton?s club of residence as a professional in the late 1930?s, this heavily wooded parkland course lies within acres of the National Trust's Ashridge Estate. The area justifiably has been designated as an area of outstanding natural beauty.
