Rhys Davies finished runner-up at the Singha Thailand Open and in so doing secured the most notable achievement of his rookie golfing career.

The 24-year-old finished with a 15-under-par total of 265, just two shots behind winner Jyoti Randhawa at Laguna Phuket Golf Club.

Davies’ 67 was not enough to overcome Randhawa, but the Welshman was full of praise for his opponent. "Jyoti hit a number of great shots and a few good putts at the right time and that was the difference," said Davies.

"Maybe his experience also helped but I felt comfortable in that position.

"It just did not quite happen - a few things did not go right and if they had it would have been a different story."

Davies, from Bridgend, is still chasing his maiden victory on the Asian Tour having come close at last year's Vietnam Masters when he finished tied second.

Meanwhile, it was win number eight on the Asian Tour for 36-year-old Randhawa. "I played marvellous golf the last two days," reflected India’s world number 94, who closed with a flawless 65 to wrap up victory.

Chinese Taipei's Lu Wei-chih finished three strokes behind Randhawa to take third with a 65.
