Golf ball technology is ever evolving as the golfers look for whatever marginal gains can be found. There are golf balls aimed at every skill level of golfer and some are especially designed to help with for specific needs. So some will boost distance, others will fly straighter, some are aimed at golfers with slower swings and some are designed to deliver tour level performance for the very best players.

TaylorMade covers all of those bases but the company has more recently started to focus on helping golfers with their alignment. The result of this research and development is Vis-Tech balls, a range of designs aimed at helping golfers lock onto their target and add more consistency to their game.

I have recently tested all of the vis-tech golf balls in practice and also used one of them extensively in competitive play for several rounds to see if it could benefit my game. I play an annual four ball with three friends and it’s kind of a big deal to us. We all take it very seriously due to the 12 months of bragging rights that come with it.

Knowing I had the choice of any of the best TaylorMade golf balls with vis-tech designs on offer, I decided to use the Tour Response Stripe ball because I have used the standard Tour Response ball in the past and it’s a good fit for my game. The stripe design intrigued me too, it's visually very powerful. So what better way to judge it than to put in play for my most important round of the year?

This is probably the part where you expect me to say that I romped to victory and the Tour Response Stripe golf ball was the reason why. Sadly I didn’t win, but I did play quite well and I enjoyed the performance of the ‘Stripe’. So much so that I’ve since switched to it full time and I’m hoping it’s going to really help me, especially on the putting greens. It's also easier to find in the rough, which comes in handy.

Vis-tech is all about alignment, which is more important to some golfers than others. While I will sometimes use the alignment lines to help with my drives, I have never used it when putting because I find it distracting. I’ve never been a fan of the thinner alignment line because any time I was standing over a putt I would start questioning whether I had lined the ball up correctly. Being out by a few millimetres on a longer putt could result in the ball going a foot off target. At least that’s what I’d be telling myself.

So I rarely - if ever - use an alignment aid on the greens, which may partially explain why putting is my biggest weakness. I do have friends who will never putt without carefully using the line on the ball to set their path to the hole. Most Tour Pros use this method too, so clearly it works, but it isn’t for everybody, least of all myself.

The thicker alignment line that TaylorMade has introduced with its ‘Stripe’ design can be a game changer for golfers like myself who are not comfortable with the thinner line. There are a few variations of the Stripe design, while there is also the Pix option (available on the TaylorMade TP5 and TP5x balls). You may be familiar with the Pix as Tommy Fleetwood and Rickie Fowler have been using it for several years.

The Pix has sixteen ClearPath Alignment diamonds positioned around the ball's surface which helps with aim and feedback on the roll. I’ve tried Pix before and while I think it looks cool and certainly makes your ball easier to find in the rough and track through the air, it doesn't have the same impact on the greens as the Stripe.

The stripe is essentially a digital band that wraps around the center of the ball, with a thin black line running inside of it to match the sight line on your putter. I did not use the thin line for reasons explained above, but the stripe itself certainly appealed to me. This is personal preference though and you should probably try using both the stripe and the center line to see which you prefer, while also giving the Pix a look too. After all, if it’s good enough for Tommy…

I also found that the Stripe design was very useful off the tee. I figured that being off by a few millimetres is not so catastrophic when you’re aiming at a forty yard fairway as opposed to a four inch hole! It's not something golfers consider but it made a real difference to my accuracy when I started using it. You can even orientate the stripe slightly differently, perhaps slightly out to the right, to encourage a certain swing path if a slice is something you struggle with.

There are different options with the Stripe. The TP5 and TP5x models have the clear stripe, whereas the Tour Response ball I used has three different solid stripe color options; orange, green and blue. The clear stripe on the TP5 and TP5x will appeal to those who prefer a more classic look. I don’t think there’s any performance benefit to clear over solid, but you could perhaps argue that the solid stripe is a little more effective in fading light or cloudy conditions.

All of the TaylorMade vis-tech golf balls are designed for use on the course rather than simply being useful training aids. That being said, they are excellent training aids, particularly when it comes to putting. The Stripe and Pix designs can really help you hone your skills on the greens as you get excellent feedback on how your putts are rolling. With a plain golf ball you can’t always tell if your putts are rolling true or whether they are wobbling all over the place. Pix and Stripe designs will show you that instantly, and this is also useful on the course.

It isn’t just on the greens where alignment counts though. As mentioned above, I found it helpful when driving the ball too. By lining your ball up at the part of the fairway you are aiming at, you can then set your club head, feet and shoulders on the same path as the ball. That sounds like basic stuff, but often we take these fundamentals for granted. By developing a routine where you use the ball to line up your drive and ensure everything else is in sync, you can avoid some of those costly wayward tee shots.

So can alignment aids on a golf ball help to lower your score? It depends entirely on the individual and their preferences, but if used correctly and if it suits your eye, then vis-tech balls will definitely make life easier and save you shots on the course.

TaylorMade Spider FCG Putter Review

For golfers that like the visuals and forgiveness of the Spider X but want something a little smaller and more blade-like in terms of feel, the new Spider FCG could well be the ideal alternative. 

Starting with the looks it has a smaller, slightly more rounded profile than the Spider X but is arguably easier to aim thanks to the T-shape alignment system. It’s really effective in helping setting the face square, using both the long sightline and contrasting white strip parallel to the leading edge in tandem.

The front weighting of the Spider FCG does feel a little different to the rear weighted Spider X but the performance remained similar once you got used to the feel during your stroke. This putter undoubtedly has a firmer, more solid feel than the Spider X thanks in part to the heavier copper insert, closer to that of what you would experience from solid putters with no grooves on the face.

But there are grooves, angled at 45°, and they certainly help the ball to hug the ground after it leaves the face. We putted surprisingly well with the TaylorMade Spider FCG, holing a surprising amount of putts from mid and long range. We found it easy to start the ball online thanks to the crown design and the distance control to be very consistent.

The thinner Super Stroke X Traxion Pistol 1.0 PT grip compliments the mid-mallet head size very well and the all-black putter shaft bolsters the premium appeal.

We tested the face-balanced single bend option, which didn’t feel much like a blade but the L-Neck and short slant versions offer progressively more toe hang to make the putter flow and release more like a blade-style putter.

The new 2021 TaylorMade P790 iron revealed promises better feel and forgiveness than its predecessor thanks to a complete redesign of the clubhead

2021 TaylorMade P790 Iron Revealed

TaylorMade has unveiled the third generation of the popular P790 iron, a model that redefined the players distance iron category when it originally launched four years ago.

A big design change is the introduction of a SpeedFoam Air material inside the forged hollow body, a urethane foam that is 69 per cent less dense than the prior generation SpeedFoam. This accounts for an average of 3.5g in weight savings per iron that allows for a substantial redistribution of mass to lower CG placement and improved launch properties.

It also unlocked access a 1.5mm forged 4140 steel L-Face - the thinnest in P790 history - to promote added flexibility, fast ball speeds and distance while upholding a premium forged feel.

Based on charted data from thousands of shots, the sweet spot has been strategically shaped and positioned centrally to capture more shots - TaylorMade say the high COR area has been expanded by 30 per cent.

Heavier tungsten weighting, up to 31g in an individual iron head, is positioned low to deliver forgiveness, assisted by the Thru-Slot Speed Pocket that provides increased face flexibility while preserving ball speed and distance on low face strikes.

"SpeedFoamAir is the heartbeat of the new P·790 irons. The development of this lightweight urethane material allowed us to strategically reconstruct the iron head to promote optimal launch conditions and a sweetspot that covers the most common strike points on the face," Matt Bovee, Product Creation, Irons, for TaylorMade told GM.

The new P790 iron for 2021 goes on sale September 3rd with an RRP of £1,149 for a seven-piece set with True Temper Dynamic Gold 105 steel shafts (95 in reg) or Mitsubishi Chemical MMT graphite shafts as standard.

There's also the option of the new 2021 TaylorMade P790 UDI utility iron (above, RRP £229). It is a forged driving iron designed with Tour-inspired shaping and incorporating the same thin-walled design and SpeedFoam Air as the P790 iron.

It features the same intelligent sweetspot as the P790 iron, promotes low spin with a piercing trajectory and comes in 2-iron (17°) only.

Building on the success of the MG2, the brand has now launched the next generation of Milled Grind wedges.

TaylorMade is looking to continue the momentum of the Milled Grind 2 wedge with the launch of the new Milled Grind 3, featuring updated technologies and new aesthetics.

Once again the wedges will benefit from RAW face technology, which means the wedges have an un-plated surface material that rusts over time, as you can see below. This is to maintain consistently high spin generation in wet conditions.

In terms of new introductions to the face, TaylorMade has added Raised Micro-Ribs between the grooves to aid spin and precision around the greens. This is because the abrasive surface further enhances the friction between the ball and the clubface.

The Milled Grind Sole process continues with each leading edge and sole grind being individually CNC milled for accuracy.

There are three bounce options to mention too; low standard and high.

The new low bounce sole geometry promotes a smoother entry and exit of the club through the turf, the standard is geared towards playability and forgiveness, and finally the high bounce option is designed to help players with a steep attack angle or those who play in softer conditions.

The TaylorMade engineers also made a special effort to improve the sound and launch of the new wedges too. This takes the form of the Thick-Thin design of the MG3, in which mass has been placed to optimise the CG location which encourages lower launch and increased spin. The player testing revealed this also helped with sound and feel too.

The final bit of technology to mention are the progressive hosel lengths which allow for optimal CG location and promotes a seamless transition from iron sets into wedges.

They come equipped with True Temper Tour Issue S200 shafts and Lamkin Crossline 360 grips. The wedges will be available at retail on Friday, September 3rd, at an RRP of £149.

There will also be a TW grind model which will be available in January 2022. The MG2 version proved to be very popular, with Rory McIlroy putting it into play and the new MG3 version will also be inspired by Tiger's grind.

The 300 Series was first released in 2000 in the form of a family of 300cc drivers sought after by players at every level.

In homage, TaylorMade has today announced the all-new 300 Mini Driver with design cues and aesthetics that create immediate nostalgia for golfers who recall the originals.

The 307cc head delivers a blend of distance, forgiveness, and control, relying on advanced multi-material construction to provide the optimal combination of low-CG performance and high MOI forgiveness for power and playability off the deck.

Off the tee, 300 Mini Driver obtains the optimal properties of high launch with low spin thanks to its low CG and mass that is distributed across the sole from front to back. What it lacks in stature, it makes up for in speed using the combination of a high-strength titanium face and Thru-Slot Speed Pocket to deliver ball speed.

The corrective performance of Twist Face adds another level of playability, while a reinvented V-Steel soleplate adds to the low CG properties and promotes improved turf interaction and versatility when played off the deck.

A prototype model of the 300 Mini Driver appeared on Tour last month during the US Open and some TaylorMade players, including Dustin Johnson, are currently testing the design for potential play at this year’s Open Championship.

“It’s been 20 years since we last made a metalwood this size. It was only natural to call it the 300 Mini Driver to acknowledge what the 300 Series meant to our brand and the game,” Tomo Bystedt, Product Creation, Metalwoods & Irons, told GM.

“We blended the throwback look with modern carbon, titanium and steel construction to produce a club the speaks to TaylorMade loyalists while delivering distance from the tee and the fairway.”

The 300 Mini Driver will be available at retail on 15th July, 2021. It has an RRP of of £369 and will be offered in lofts of 11.5° and 13.5°. The Mitsubishi MiDr ProtoTM is the stock shaft fitted with Golf Pride’s Z-Grip (47g).

The new collection of putters combines classic designs with a new Hydro Blast finish to deliver premium performance and aesthetics.

TaylorMade has today introduced its premium collection of TP Hydro Blast putters to the market, a collection that combines classic head shapes with a new Hydro Blast finish.

Hoping to become some of the best TaylorMade putters, the collection features seven traditionally shaped putters all of which feature the premium new Hydro Blast finish that provides a rich, premium and cohesive look to the collection of putters.

It also creates a durable surface and is achieved by applying a high-pressure stream of water to 303 stainless steel.

Each model is equipped with the same White Pure Roll insert that features on the popular Spider X putter.

The insert features grooves at a downward 45° angle, designed to optimise roll characteristics by producing enhanced topspin to help the ball start rolling end over end sooner.

The Soto is a classically shaped blade that features flowing, rounded edges. Equipped with an L-Neck hosel, the traditional blade shape produces 40° of toe hang which results in a putter best suited to players to create maximum face rotation through the putting stroke.

The Del Monte has a shorter blade length and a wider area from front to back, creating a more squatted profile that translates into a mallet-like feel while maintaining the overall characteristics of a blade.

It comes in an L-Neck hosel with 29° of toe hang and a Single Bend hosel with 8° of toe hang, which is better for the player who has a straight back and straight through putting motion.

The Bandon head has a Tour-inspired double wing design that helps frame the ball at address and encourages forgiveness via the optimised perimeter weighting.

The L-neck Bandon 1 - which was the first to appear on Tour in the bag of Tommy Fleetwood - features 22° of toe hang which gives blade-like performance within a mallet design.

There is also the Bandon 3 with a Short Slant hosel for 32° of toe hang.

The DuPage model is modern take on a traditional mallet design with unique visual alignment cues and dual slot cavity to help frame the ball at address. It features a single bend hosel that provides a face balance ideal for the golfer with a straight back straight through stroke.

Finally, the Chaska model revisits the original TaylorMade Corza Ghost design with the familiar circular alignment aid in the back of the putter and three sight-lines on top.

With rounded contours, adjustable sole weights and three forward sightline, the design provides exceptional stability and simple alignment features.

KPS has sold TaylorMade to South Korean investment company Centroid for a reported $1.7bn, just four years after buying the company from adidas.

KPS Capital Partners has sold TaylorMade Golf to South Korean Investment company Centroid, for a reported $1.7 billion.

KPS Capital Partners acquired TaylorMade back in 2017 from Adidas Golf for a reported £425 million, meaning they have quadrupled their investment in just four years.

Now an independent gear-focused company, TaylorMade sponsors the likes of Tiger Woods, Dustin Johnson and Rory McIlroy, as well as several LPGA players, and is a leading golf brand.

Meanwhile, after establishing in 2015, Centroid has focussed on several strategic investments in South Korea, including the acquisition of South Springs Country Club for $170 million, making it one of the most expensive golf course sales in the country.

The South Korean company has also invested in other companies from a range of industries, though Centroid is clearly excited about buying TaylorMade.

“TaylorMade Golf is a transformational investment for Centroid,” said Jinhyeok Jeong, founder and CEO of Centroid Investment Partners.

“We are very excited to have the opportunity to invest in a global leader in golf.

"The industry is currently experiencing high demand, increased participation with strong long-term opportunities around the world.

"TaylorMade is an iconic brand with continued momentum across the key golf equipment categories and regions, especially the Korean and wider Asian markets."

TaylorMade is also hoping to capitalise on their continued growth by partnering with Centroid.

David Abeles, TaylorMade CEO, said: “This transaction is a very important milestone as we continue to build upon our brand’s momentum around the world.

“Not surprisingly, the sale process for TaylorMade generated tremendous interest from a wide range of prospective buyers and resulted in an agreement that reflects the outstanding performance of our business today, as well as the outlook for the future.

“Our partnership with KPS has been extraordinary.

"At the same time, we are equally excited about our new partnership with Centroid and believe that it will enable our outstanding team to continue to build on the strategies that have driven TaylorMade’s success.”

While driver designs continue to be as intricate and complex as they’ve ever been, TaylorMade decided to really strip back its premium offering in 2021 with the SIM2 model.

In our full review, we found the SIM2 driver still delivered despite its stripped back design with it easily being one of the best drivers for distance in the 2021 class.

Made up of just four main parts, only one of which is made from titanium, it places more of a focus on forgiveness over elaborate adjustability that was going redundant in the majority of cases.

This is thanks to a radical weight shift, all made possible by a Forged Ring construction made from aluminium, which saves nine grams of weight and allows TaylorMade to fix a 16g weight right at the back to drive forgiveness levels up to new heights.

Simple but effective

With the adjustable sliding weight removed, the sole is made entirely from a nine ply carbon fibre for even more weight savings and better airflow to boot. The result is a slick, streamlined-looking driver that is simple to grasp in terms of the concept but no less appealing on the shelf and easy to swing fast as the asymmetric inertia generator from SIM carries over.

It’s also easier to align at address thanks to the sharper contrast between the darker carbon fibre crown section and white front strip behind the topline.

What’s interesting is this new design has given TaylorMade better access to the rear of the face, which means it could implement an improved CNC milling process that made more of the face at maximum speed and because the face is 12 per cent bigger than on SIM, it made for consistently longer drives during our testing.

Straighter shots

The SIM driver was always going to be tough to beat but the SIM2 made it look erratic by comparison because of the extra stability at play here. A golfer’s dream combination is fairway-finding accuracy without sacrificing distance, and that is what TaylorMade has delivered with the SIM2 driver.

This is a new addition to the range and it offers something quite different from the SIM2 Max with some input from none other than the likes of World No. 1s Dustin Johnson and Rory McIlroy.

It's on our list of best golf hybrids too because we loved the distance and versatility on offer during testing.

Feel and distance

There are plenty of similarities across both models with the Twist Face technology being part of all TaylorMade woods to help with any mishits, the Speed Pockets to up your ball speed and to further help with those low-face mishits and the now restored V Steel design.

This was revolutionary 20 years ago, improving the club’s turf interaction, and now with the optimised centre of gravity this offers plenty of help and distance.

But it’s when you look down on the club that there is a very fresh appearance to what you might have expected. It’s cleaner with no chalk point, more compact and it sits beautifully behind the ball.

Stunning looks

TaylorMade has incorporated the best bits from previous incarnations, like the GAPR HI and M3 rescues, and the result is a more iron-like profile.

The beauty of this is that, looks wise, it flows very nicely with your irons with a kind of upside down shape, a wider sole than the top, and a high-toe look. If you have always associated hybrids with always wanting to go left then this addition is very welcome.

There are only three lofts (the SIM2 Max has five), but there is plenty of adjustability with the ability to go +/- 1.5˚. It launches slightly lower but a more high-spinning trajectory means there is more workability.

These are fast and penetrating and, while you want your hybrids to play a collection of different roles, you should find that the SIM2 Rescue could be a very welcome addition off the tee.

TaylorMade’s three-piece, urethane-covered Tour Response model is one of the best mid-price golf balls on the market, costing around a tenner a dozen less than those pricey premium models.

At the heart of the Tour Response lies a 40-compression core blessed with high-spring properties to maximise energy transfer from clubhead to ball for added yards. A firmer mid-layer helps further by keeping spin down off the tee. It is worth saying that this is the original version of this ball, the newer Tour Response 2022 golf ball has a higher 70 compression core that we think possibly makes it more playable for a broader spectrum of golfers.

Pitch With Confidence

The package is then completed by the golf ball world’s cover material of kings, soft urethane, which helps wedge grooves really get into the ball for added grip and greenside spin compared to some models in this sector.

The ball was launched alongside the less expensive Soft Response model, and we really liked how the Tour Response performed for us with the driver, delivering a strong ball flight that held its own even in a gusting wind.

It was around the green, though, that the Tour Response proved a bit of revelation for the mid-price sector, giving us all the softness we needed to really buy into its greenside spin credentials. When you get that confidence, it allows you to then play those 30- to 40-yard pitch shots with greater assurance - dare we even say, audacity - safe in the knowledge that when we struck it well we’d be rewarded with that lovely second-bounce check.

Our overall conclusion is that Tour Response provides great all-round feel, distance off the tee and spin around the greens. Indeed, in the long game we felt that for our, admittedly above average swing speed, there was no discernible distance difference between Tour Response and TaylorMade’s premium TP5 models. A great all-round ball at an attractive, sub-premium price.

TaylorMade has been making five-piece premium golf balls for over a decade now and this latest TP5 ball is the third-generation of a model that first launched in 2017 and quickly became one of the best premium golf balls on the market.

One of the main changes for 2021 is a refined Tour Flight Dimple Pattern featuring ‘dual-radius shape’ dimples. These promise improved aerodynamics and carry distance for golfers across the spectrum by optimising airflow around the ball to reduce drag and therefore promote greater distance.

Beneath the soft urethane cover, four increasingly stiff layers combine to convert as much compression energy into ball speed as possible, with its large, more reactive core a key ball speed component.

More Stopping Power

We’ve long been fans of the TP5 and really enjoyed the ball flight of this latest model, not just because of the excellent driver distance, but also because the flight parabola with irons gets the ball coming in on a steeper descent for improved control. That's really handy playing into firm greens.

TP5 remains the softer of the two models in the family, with its cover really helping on those greenside shots where spin is the key. It also launches a little lower on pitch shots for a greater degree of control when the wind gets up. We also found it easier to shape the TP5 a bit compared to the TP5x.

With many different premium balls being played on the main tours, it’s clear that you’re often trying to split hairs when it comes to differentiating between their performance. They are all good! But if we were to pick out one key benefit of the TP5, it would be that steeper descent angle at the end of the ball’s flight, which could just be the difference between a long iron staying on the green or running through the back.

The second-generation Hi-Toe’s all-new Raw Face is engineered for added spin and accuracy, plus more consistent performance from the rough or on mis-hits. The full-face grooves in the higher-lofted models from 56˚ and up help pave the way to better results when the strike is a little off or compromised.

The beauty of the Hi-Toe shape and design is that it allows a higher centre of gravity so you can launch wedge shots a little lower with more spin for extra control on full shots. The bigger face area that Hi-Toe allows adds scope for more creative greenside work from a variety of lies.

Open-face Specialist

The ZTP RAW grooves on the Hi-Toe are something else, generating more spin than you might be used to, especially in wet conditions where those sharper, narrower and deeper grooves really come into their own.

Where this club really excelled for us was on open-faced shots, with the extra spin particularly noticeable on lobs from the semi-rough and bunkers. The full-face grooves in the high-toe section that you’re more likely to utilise on these shots really do seem to provide extra spin when you lay the face wide open.

As for looks, the aged copper finish when new looks really classy, but it will be up to you as to whether you’re happy with a face that will rust over time (and potentially help to retain spin consistency for longer) or would prefer something that keeps its looks for longer.

We’re not averse to a spot of age-induced rust and found this wedge really confidence-inspiring over the ball.

We found it incredibly workable and user friendly in testing, making it one of the best fairway woods for mid handicappers in 2021.

The 170cc 3-wood head is a great, compact looking head at address and will certainly suit the eye of the better ball strikers. The 3-wood is also available in a 13.5° ‘rocket’ head allowing it to almost be used as a driver or as especially strong 3-wood if you use a driver with a similarly low loft.

Compact but forgiving

Despite the compact look, the SIM2 Ti is still a reasonably forgiving fairway wood. The Twist Face technology means strikes off the toe or the heel don’t go as drastically off-line as they would off a conventional bulge and roll face.

Furthermore, the V-Steel sole reduces friction at impact and in turn helps with turf interaction, allowing this club to be easily used off the deck or out of less favourable lies.

The distance that can be achieved with this fairway wood makes it a great option for attacking a par 5 with a second shot or for use as a driver if you’re having a bad day off the tee. The even more compact 5-wood head is another great option for those looking to fill a gap in the bag and want a compact head to look at at address.

Overall, this compact fairway wood is a superb blend of aesthetics, versatility and performance. It is a compact fairway wood that isn’t exclusively for the better ball strikers and one that most golfers will find incredibly useful across the golf course.

New Technologies

With forged hollow body, Speed Foam injection and up to 46.5g of tungsten weighting through the set, the new P770 irons feature a good deal more technology than their predecessor of the same name.

An ultra-light urethane foam has been injected inside the head that’s engineered to maximise speed off the face as well as improve feel. 

The Thru-Slot Speed Pocket also helps to raise speed and to provide a little more forgiveness on shots that are struck low in the face.

Each iron also features TaylorMade’s Progressive Inverted Cone Technology which, again, is intended to improve consistency with off-centre strikes.

Flies long and high

In our full review of the irons, we found the P770 to feel lively off the face, producing long carries and a high ball flight.

That higher launch is particularly noticeable in the long irons, thanks in part to slightly more traditional lofts. With additional spin, added after player feedback, we saw excellent stopping power even on relatively firm greens.

If you’re after a combination of power and workability, the P770 irons from TaylorMade could be just the ticket this season.

The TaylorMade Spider EX putter has made it into our Editor's Choice List for 2021.

If you’re asked to think of one of the best mallet putters out on Tour then the likelihood is that a TaylorMade Spider will be one of the first to pop into your head.

They first hit the pro scene in 2008 and they’ve been moving players away from the more traditional blade and towards the high-MOI mallet ever since. This, like its predecessors, is big on aim and alignment and there’s lots to like about it. Interestingly the new EX is slightly larger than the Spider X but it has a more streamlined shape and a rounded backside.

The three dots on the top are something called True Path and they make it very easy to sit the putter behind the ball and the head sits perfectly, as you might expect.

The ability to hit a solid putt sounds so much easier than it actually is but there’s loads that has gone into this to help make that happen. The stability is a big part of the Spider Ex, the wings with heavy tungsten weighting sit deep to pull the CG back so the ‘occasional’ off-centre strike will still get that roll out.

Change Of Face

There is also a new Pure Roll 2.0 insert at work here which is TaylorMade’s first multi-material insert and this has eight aluminium beans that work independently and sit at a 45˚ angle to produce the purest roll and increased feel.

Also new is the Fluted Feel shaft which helps tighten the dispersion by a soft tip section – this has been delivered after working in conjunction with KBS to get the perfect blend of stability and feel.

Available in three colours of Spider Ex comes in three colours of platinum white, ghost white or navy and white, we think the Spider EX is one of the best putters in golf so expect to hear plenty about this in 2021.

TaylorMade’s popular range of Spider mallet putters just got bigger as the company has announced the addition of four new models, headlined by the Spider EX.

Aiming to be among 2021's best putters, all four putters have been designed specifically to make alignment easier for golfers thanks to the True Path system that fits each putter’s unique profile.

Thanks to its multi-compound construction, TaylorMade say the Spider EX delivers optimal stability. Specifically, the aluminium frame and carbon composite centre allow for weight to be distributed around the perimeter, which increases MOI for a more consistent roll and extra forgiveness across the face.

Two 28-gram weights occupy the heel and toe, and a heavy tungsten weight has been placed at the rear - the exact amount of which depends on the putter length.

The new True Path system makes it easier to aim thanks to the reflective white colour that features prominently on the top of the putter, as well as three dots between a dual rail which help to centre the ball at address.

Additionally, the Spider EX comes with TaylorMade’s first multi-material insert. The new Pure Roll features a white TPU urethane that surrounds eight silver aluminium beams to produce enhanced roll and feel.

Designed in conjunction with KBS, the all-new Fluted Feel shaft has been created to further enhance the feel properties of the putter, along with the stock Super Stroke Pistol GTR 1.0 grip.

Building on the success of TaylorMade's most prolific putter, the Spider X, the new Spider X Hydro Blast model comes with a new colourway and finishing process.

The Hydro Blast has a smoother and very premium-looking finish thanks to the high-pressure application of water to the aluminium body.

And TaylorMade says a by-product of this process is added durability as the risk of blemishes and scratches is minimised due to the absence of paint.

TaylorMade has refreshed the design of last year's Spider S, with a new arrow-shaped True Path alignment system found on the updated Spider S and Spider SR. The exact width of a golf ball, this focal point on the top of the putter will help golfers find a consistent address position.

This square-shaped model has a weight on the heel and toe to make the putter more stable, while a number of options are available between 40 and 70 grams for the tungsten backbar.

The story of stability continues with the Spider SR (Stability Refined). This putter, which comes in a tour-inspired wing shape, has a multi-material design that features two back weights for high-MOI performance.

It also comes with an arrow-shaped alignment system and both the Spider S and SR have been equipped with the Fluted Feel shaft as well as the tour-proven TPU Pure Roll insert.

TaylorMade has added another model to its Hi-Toe series with the launch of the new Milled Grind Hi-Toe Raw, building on the success of the Milled Grind 2, Hi-Toe and the Hi-Toe Big Foot.

The second iteration of the Hi-Toe features an all-new Raw Face, designed for increased spin and precision and encouraging better consistency out of the rough and on off-centre strikes.

Additionally, a new thick-thin topline design has allowed TaylorMade to redistribute weight elsewhere, optimising the CG location to improve feel and allow golfers the ability to better control the flight of their wedge shots.

The aged copper finish has also been updated, creating a classic looking club that will give golfers confidence at address.

All three sole designs - the standard bounce, low bounce and Big Foot (high bounce) - are milled to maximise the consistency of turf interaction and therefore performance.

But the big story centres around the new Raw Face Technology, with sharper, narrower and deeper grooves in the face, as well as laser etching, improving the overall consistency of the club across the entire face - even out the rough.

Furthermore, the face will rust over time, enhancing that classic look while preserving the consistency of spin golfers can expect across the club’s life.

Each Hi-Toe Raw wedge is constructed using 8620 carbon steel and features KBS Hi-Rev 2.0 115g Taper shafts, and Lamkin Crossline 360 grips.

The standard-bounce offering, which is suited for all types of playing conditions, is available in a range of lofts between 50° and 62°.

For golfers used to playing in firmer conditions, a 58° and a 60° wedge is available, while anyone who prefers a club they can rely on when the ground is soft, the Big-Foot edition features 15° of bounce and comes in lofts of 56°, 58° and 60°.

TaylorMade 2021 TP5 And TP5x Golf Balls Unveiled

TaylorMade has revealed its brand new TP5 and TP5x golf balls for 2021.

The updated models feature a new Tour Flight Dimple Pattern, which has been designed to provide improved aerodynamics and carry distance for every level of golfer.

The new dimple design has a unique 'dual-radius shape' that decouples dimple volume from depth to optimise airflow around the golf ball during flight, which is said to ultimately reduce drag and promote distance.

The five-piece balls have four increasingly stiff layers wrapped in a cast urethane cover.

TaylorMade continues to use the High-Flex Material that featured in the 2019 balls, which was built to efficiently convert compression into ball speed.

The brand calls it the 'Speed-Layer System', which added speed compared to the previous generation.

Each of the TP5 and TP5x have been improved thanks to feedback from TaylorMade's tour players including World No.1 Dustin Johnson, four-time Major winner Rory McIlroy and five-time PGA Tour winner Rickie Fowler.

Engineers saw that players switched from TP5x to TP5 for enhanced greenside spin and control in the short game.

Conversely, players switched from TP5 to TP5x for the added distance and ball speed.

For those reasons, TaylorMade has produced the new 2021 TP5x with a slightly softer cast urethane cover that is said to better grip the grooves on wedges for increased spin around the greens with lower launch, while remaining the fastest Tour ball in the TaylorMade lineup.

The 2021 TP5 now has a larger, more reactive core that delivers more ball speed while retaining the same feel and spin properties of the prior generation.

TP5 still provides a softer feel of the two balls as well as increased greenside spin and a lower launch in comparison to TP5x, which is faster, longer and higher launching.

The new individual enhancements are said to give golfers performance precisely where they want it the most in both models.

The 2021 TP5 and TP5x will be available at retail on 12th March at an RRP of £49.99 per dozen.

The new TP5/TP5x Yellow will be available at retail on 9th April and the new TP5/TP5x Pix will be available from the 7th May.

TaylorMade claims to be offering across the board improvements thanks to a radical design shift found on the three new SIM2 drivers, which replace the SIM driver range, along with new SIM2 fairways, hybrids and irons.

The Asymmetric Inertia generator and Speed Injected Twist Face carry over from last year's SIM drivers, but the head of SIM2 is now created using a Forged Ring construction made from aluminium, which saves nine grams of weight.

The sole is made entirely from a nine ply carbon fibre for even more weight savings and better airflow as TaylorMade have done away with the sliding weight track, which TaylorMade say was redundant for the majority of golfers.

The Milled Back Cup Face is the only part of the head made from titanium. The updated internal CNC milling of it means there is no longer a need for injection ports on the Twist Face, just one is required in the toe. It also means that 23 per cent more shots fall into the high COR category.

TaylorMade SIM2 Drivers Review

The SIM2 driver has a TPS fixed front weight that lowers spin and can be adjusted for swing weight. It has a 12 per cent larger face versus SIM that increases forgiveness, helped by a 16g back weight.

The SIM2 Max has a 24g back weight for even more forgiveness and a five per cent larger face than the SIM Max. On the SIM2 Max D, the entire Inertia Generator and 22g back weight has been moved towards the heel to increase draw bias for serial slicers. 

There are three fairway wood options, including the more compact SIM2 Titanium fairway that features a lightweight carbon construction with Zatech Titanium Face and a heavy 80g steel sole weight for a five per cent increase in MOI over its predecessor. There’s also the larger SIM2 Max fairway and draw biased SIM2 Max D along with SIM2 and SIM2 Max Rescues.

Both the SIM2 Max and SIM2 Max OS irons boast a new Cap Back Design comprising a strong, lightweight polymer material that spans the cavity to support the entire topline, providing additional rigidity in the upper part of the face.

It works in unison with the Thru-Slot Speed Pocket to increase flexibility for more distance. It also enhances forgiveness by discouraging the clubface to twist on off-centre hits.

The updated Echo Damping System, comprising a soft polymer material completely encapsulated within the length of the cavity, helps to minimise unwanted vibrations for a forged-like feel and sound.

The progressive face design gradually shifts the larger sweetspot toe-ward in long irons to promote a neutral ball flight while also delivering corrective performance on the common right miss.

The size and shape of the SIM2 Max iron will suit a variety of game improvers while the larger, stronger-lofted and more offset SIM2 Max OS iron is designed for high handicappers seeking maximum distance and forgiveness.

TaylorMade SIM UDI Utility Iron Review

Building on the success of the GAPR range, TaylorMade has launched the SIM UDI utility iron, designed to fill the slot between fairway woods and long irons.

While it looks more like an iron, with its hollow head and specifically placed SpeedFoam, this club offers the sort of performance you’d expect from a strong-lofted hybrid, which is what makes it such an appealing product.

In comparison to the other new TaylorMade utility iron, the SIM DHY, this club has a thinner sole and less offset as it is designed to produce a more penetrating ball flight. Additionally, it is also worth saying that the SpeedFoam used in the SIM UDI is a higher density version to further promote this lower trajectory.

At address, the SIM UDI in particular looks like a player’s club and TaylorMade has to be applauded for the aesthetic upgrades it has been able to make compared to the previous generation.

But how did it perform?

We tested the SIM UDI on the Foresight Sports GCQuad launch monitor and straight away you can see that it comes out with a lower launch angle and therefore doesn’t reach the same peak height as the SIM DHY version.

Despite this, it offers almost identical distance so would be a great addition for anyone regularly battling the elements or for those who want an alternative off the tee given the stronger, more penetrating flight and additional run on landing.

Both clubs offer something different to further strengthen the SIM line-up. We’ve already seen a number of Tour pros experimenting with the hybrid, so don’t be surprised to see the UDI or DHY make an appearance soon.

The new TaylorMade Spider FCG Putter launched by TaylorMade features front-loaded weighting to provide the feel of a blade with mallet-like forgiveness

The new TaylorMade Spider FCG putter is said to look like a mallet but feel like a blade.

FCG stands for Forward Centre of Gravity and the putter gets its front-loaded weighting from heavy tungsten sole weights making up over 100g of weight positioned in the heel and toe. This is said to deliver the benefits and release of a blade, but with the MOI of a mallet.

In fact, two thirds of the total head weight is located in the front portion of the head, allowing the toe to rotate around that centre of mass.

The 25g CU29 Pure Roll insert insert delivers a firmer feel and sound. Crafted from copper, this 25g insert is the heaviest TaylorMade has ever constructed and along with 45° angled grooves is said to increases topspin and improve forward roll compared to a solid face.

Visually, the new True Path T sightline provides perpendicular alignment, allowing the player to align from front to back, and/or from heel to toe.

Adjustable sole weights allow golfers to customize performance, feel and achieve precise swing weights at different putter lengths.

Spider FCG is available in three different hosel types, each meant for a different style of putting stroke. The Short Slant hosel offers 46° of toe hang (squarely in range with most blade models) to fit golfers with a significant amount of face rotation. The L-Neck has 25° of toe hang for golfers with moderate face rotation and the Single Bend is the most face balanced of the three – better aligning with golfers who have minimal rotation in the putting stroke.

A black KBS CT Tour Stepless Stability Shaft comes as standard, providing less deflection at the point of impact, as does a Super Stroke X Traxion Pistol 1.0 PT grip.

TaylorMade SIM DHY Utility Iron Review

Back in 2018, TaylorMade launched its GAPR range designed to offer golfers more options to bridge the gap between their fairway woods and irons. Now, along with the SIM UDI and P790 UDI utilities, TaylorMade has released a new SIM DHY utility iron to replace the GAPR products and refine the concept.

A club like this is aimed at players who prefer utility irons to hybrids but want as much modern playability as they can get.

The SIM DHY utility has a hollow head which is designed to boost distance and forgiveness and has also been filled with Speed Foam to dampen vibrations, providing the sort of smooth and powerful feel that golfers crave through impact.

Compared to the SIM UDI, the SIM DHY utility has a slightly thicker topline and more offset, which makes it a more confidence-inspiring package for those in search of extra assistance at the top end of the bag.

Despite this, the clean lines ensure it has a sleek appearance behind the ball and it definitely represents a significant improvement over the GAPR in this regard.

We tested both the SIM DHY and SIM UDI irons at the Foresight Sports headquarters using the GCQuad launch monitor to compare the performance and what stands out from the SIM DHY utility is the increased launch and peak height on offer in like for like static lofts.

As shown, the distance and spin numbers were fairly similar, so this is where personal preferences come into play. Despite being bigger, the SIM DHY is still a great-looking club and the higher flight makes it a great option off the deck when hitting into greens as well as off the tee.

Overall, it’s an excellent addition to the TaylorMade SIM family and has recently been joined by two new SIM2 Rescue clubs, giving golfers even more choice.

The two new TaylorMade SIM Utility irons unveiled called UDI and DHY come in two distinct shapes offering different types of performance

TaylorMade SIM Utility Irons Unveiled

Set to replace the GAPR range, TaylorMade has revealed its new SIM UDI and DHY utility irons.

Sitting alongside the SIM Rescue, which has found its way into a surprising number of tour player bags including Dustin Johnson, the SIM utilities provide golfers with new options in this critical part of the bag between the longest playable iron and shortest fairway wood.

The SIM DHY is a driving hybrid that offers a larger overall footprint with a thicker top line, wider sole and a shallower profile that delivers hybrid-like forgiveness. The larger head shape is designed to inspire confidenceand it should produce a mid-high trajectory.

Conversely the SIM UDI (utimate driving iron) has a more traditional players iron profile with a thinner top line and slimmer sole for enhanced workability and shot making.

Both clubs also benefit from a newly developed SpeedFoam material that is 35 per cent less dense than the standard urethane foam injection used in other TaylorMade products like the P790 and new P770 iron.

The lighter material positions the CG lower within the clubhead to promote a higher launch and trajectory while promoting a soft, solid feel. Adding to the low-CG properties is a port on the sole of the club where the SpeedFoam is injected. The port is filled with a heavy TPS screw that drives CG even lower.

The TPS weight port is positioned on the rear of the club in SIM UDI rather than on the sole like it is on DHY. This raises the CG slightly to promote a lower launch and more penetrating ball flight.

Drawing inspiration from the V Steel construction of SIM Max Rescue, both UDI and DHY feature a rounded camber from heel to toe that improves turf interaction, particularly on uneven lies, to enhance versatility.Both models boast a hollow body construction with a forged C300 steel face, which is the same material used in SIM Max fairway woods and Rescue. This ultra-strong steel helps produce faster ball speeds while also delivering a forged feel.

While the TaylorMade GAPR utility irons featured an adjustable Loft Sleeve, feedback from expert club fitters revealed a preference for traditionally bonded hosels in the SIM UDI and DHY to better allow fitters to bend for precise loft and lie configurations (+/- 2°).

Both the SIM UDI and SIM DHY will be on sale Spet 4th with an RRP of £229. The UDI is equipped with the Mitsubishi Diamana Thump shaft and is available in lofts of 18° and 20° in both RH and LH. The DHY comes in the Mitsubishi Diamana Limited shaft in lofts of 17°, 19°, 22° and 25° in both RH and LH.

Three New TaylorMade P-Series Irons Unveiled

Already in the bag of the likes of Rory McIlroy, TaylorMade has unveiled three new irons within its P Series aimed at the better player.

Joining the P7TW, P790 and P790 Ti in the 2020 TaylorMade iron range are the P770, P7MC and P7MB as the P730, P750, P760 and old P770 step aside.

The P770 is the only new model carrying over the name of its predecessor, but it has a drastically different design to enhance performance. It’s forged hollow body with Speed Foam injection and up to 46.5g of tungsten weighting through the set is more akin to the popular P790, but it is more compact and offers higher launch with long irons, thanks in part to slightly more traditional lofts, and additional spin based on player feedback.

Designed with insights from the game’s best ball strikers, both the P7MC and P7MB benefit from a new Compact Grain Forging process that involves a 2,000-ton forging press to ensure that each iron is formed with precision and a tighter grain structure to provide the most solid, consistent feel possible.

The additional force refines the microstructure, decreasing the grain size to improve the overall properties of the metal. The high pressure forging also produces a head that is near final in shape, requiring minimal hand polishing for a repeatable, precise shaping.

REVIEW: We Test All Three New P-Series Irons

The P7MC replaces the P750 popular among many tour players, including Matthew Wolff and Jon Rahm, and features a classic shape with minimal offset. The muscle cavity design should deliver control and precision, while perimeter weighting offers just the right level of forgiveness. In creating the new backbar geometry designed to elevate feel, engineers moved mass up behind the face to support the point of impact.

The P7MB is a true muscleback that boasts a thin top line, narrow sole and minimal offset, even less offset than the prior P730 iron. It is forged from 1025 carbon steel with a machine-milled face comprised of the most aggressive score lines in TaylorMade iron for the ultimate in shot making and control.

A mirrored surface across the backbar allows light to reflect in multiple dimensions while the geometrical positioning of the backbar also delivers precise CG placement and mass properties for optimal performance. Rory wanted to see less offset in the long irons, so that has been incorporated, and the blade length is actually 1.4mm longer than on the P730.

The three new TaylorMade P-Series irons go on sale Sept 4th with an RRP of £1,299 for a 7-piece set in right or left handed.

TaylorMade's tour-level, five piece TP5 and TP5x balls are now available in hi-visibility yellow

TaylorMade TP5 Yellow Balls Revealed

TaylorMade has further expanded its ball range for 2020 with the addition of the TP5 and TP5x in hi-visibility yellow.

The original TP5 and TP5x balls were launched at the start of 2019, promising increased speed and launch off the tee as well as added greenside control.

Now golfers have the choice of a hi-visibility yellow option, which some golfers may find stands out better visually through the air in dim light conditions or on the ground on frosty mornings.

The yellow versions are the same as the white TP5 and TP5x balls in terms of performance and are one of the few five-layer tour balls on the market, played by the likes of Rory McIlroy and Dustin Johnson.

The TP5 and TP5x balls feature a new speed layer system, comprising four increasingly stiff layers for higher ball speed through greater rebound, with HFM.

HFM is a new higher modulus material that improves energy transfer through the ball for more speed. It acts like a stiff spring that builds up energy when compressed and rebounds quickly generating more ball speed.

The balls also benefit from an improved urethane compound and paint formulation for added cover durability. The TP5 offers a slightly softer feel and lower flight than the TP5x.

The TP5 and TP5x yellow follow the launch of the TP5 and TP5x Pix earlier this year, which featured a unique ClearPath alignment system. Developed in conjunction with ball player Rickie Fowler, the 12 unique graphics are strategically positioned to give the golfer feedback on how the ball is rolling.

While the TP5 and TP5x yellow strengthen TaylorMade’s premium offering for 2020, another impressive range has been the Response family.

The Tour Response is an excellent mid-price option, featuring a urethane cover for similar levels of control around the green to the TP5 and TP5x.

The Soft Response is a low-compression ball that provides a soft feel on all shots.

TaylorMade Spider S Putter Review

The TaylorMade Spider S putter features three high density tungsten weights totaling 150g in the heel, toe and rear bar help increase the MOI to over 6,000, making it one of the most forgiving putters from TaylorMade over the last few years. Given the strategic placement of tungsten throughout it is clear the focus with the Spider S is stability and make no mistake, this is one solid-feeling putter.

It performs from every distance but really excels when it comes to feel and distance control. The effect of a slightly off-centre strike is almost negated by the resistance to twist, which makes it easier to become more consistent from long range.

There’s still a fairly loud ‘pop’ sound at impact, which contributes to a firm feel. The black KBS Stepless CT Tour shaft improves the appeal aesthetically but also helps minimize vibration and any kicking of the shaft on collision that can effect speed and roll. The 45° angled grooves seem to help the ball hug the ground earlier on its journey to the hole.

The three short sightlines contrast well on both color options but perhaps aren’t as effective as the system in place on the Spider X especially given the large footprint, which means you have to work a little harder on more makeable putts. This might also be why the take up from TaylorMade's tour players hasn't been as prolific as Spider X.

That said, the rectangle shape formed by the outer lines and the cavity does frame the ball well and provide a good visual guide on your stroke path and also strike. It is also able to pick up a ball from the green should you be given a putt.

We found it to sit a touch open and needed correcting with the hands via a little extra forward press but others may have a different experience.

We’re confident most golfers will enjoy the shape and tacky feel of the SuperStroke Pistol GTR 1.0 grip as well as the choice of either chalk white or navy head color options.

We assess the looks and performance of the TaylorMade SIM and SIM Max fairway woods having put them to the test out on the course

TaylorMade SIM Fairway Woods Review

The TaylorMade SIM and SIM Max fairway woods truly stand out in this category, offering performance like no other. You can read about the technology here.

Even the looks are unique to the market. The thin chalk white section at the front of the crown contrasts sharply with the carbon fibre section behind it, helping align the face at address. They are certainly up there with the best looking fairway woods you can buy in 2020.

On to the performance and our testing has shown that the SIM and SIM Max produced some of the fastest ball speeds of any fairway wood on the market. The SIM model was particularly fast, reaching ball speeds in excess of 152mph.

It also produced fairly high spin, which could be negated with a different shaft or adjusting loft on the hosel through a custom fitting, and is possibly why it wasn’t the longest model we tested but it was certainly up there.

But the other standout characteristic was the launch and ball flight. Both the SIM and SIM Max launch and flight the ball considerably higher than any other fairway wood we tested.

In fact, the SIM Max had a peak height of 40 yards, six yards higher than any non-TaylorMade fairway, while the SIM had a peak height of 38 yards.

This higher trajectory is especially useful in creating more carry distance as well as stopping power when hitting into long par fours and par fives.

We struggled a little to strike the larger SIM Max model cleanly off the deck, which was a little surprising, but you may have a different experience. Being larger, it should be more forgiving and also a more effective option off the tee.

Off the deck, the SIM model is one of the easiest fairway woods to strike cleanly. One downside is the price, as it comes in at £369 which is £100 more expensive than the SIM Max model because of the use of a rare Zatech titanium on the face.

So while there is extra performance to be had, in the case of the SIM model it does come at a cost – it is the most expensive model on the market from all the mainstream brands.

TaylorMade MyMG2 Personalised Wedges Introduced

TaylorMade has introduce the MyMG2 personalised wedge programme, joining the MySpiderX, MyHi-Toe and MySpider offerings.

The Milled Grind 2 wedges launched last year feature a patented Raw Face design, where just the face rusts over time, which is said to increase friction for more backspin.

The MyMG2 programme is inspired by trends seen on the PGA Tour where players personalise wedges with stamping to display their unique personalities. TaylorMade is now giving all golfers the ability to make each wedge uniquely their own and deliver a service that has historically been reserved for the game’s top players.

Custom stamping options include personalised text and initials, as well as dozens of images. Great distance control

We found the Spider S to be extremely stable through the stroke and to be excellent when it comes to distance control. If you’re looking for a mallet style putter that stays consistently stable through the stroke, the Spider S is very much worth considering.

The feel off the face is solid but extremely controllable, while the roll generated by the insert is excellent. Overall, it’s a good-looking putter that feels great through the stroke and produces consistent results. What more could you ask for from your flat stick?

TaylorMade is a company never afraid to think outside the box and its new Truss putters for 2020 are a classic example of this.

While not a completely new concept, TaylorMade has certainly moved on the idea of a putter that has two connection points into the head from the shaft instead of the traditional one.

This forms a triangular shape, often referred to as a Truss in engineering, widely regarded as one of the strongest shapes, which is why it is often used in the construction of bridges and other structures.

Back to golf, the idea is to increase the stability on offer, especially from heel and toe strikes where the putter head has more of a tendency to twist, which can cause the ball to roll offline or come up short of its intended target.

There are two Truss shapes in the range, a blade and mallet each available in heel and centre-shafted options. Testing the blade, it was clear it certainly feels more like a mallet due to the solid, stable feel on different lengths of putt.

TaylorMade has done a pretty good job of hiding the Truss design from the address view and the roll we experienced was up there with the best of any putters launched this year.

While some golfers will struggle to get past the unorthodox design, these putters are truly a case of ‘don’t knock it until you’ve tried it’. With some tour players even putting them in play, there is clearly some merit in the design if they have made the switch and we agree that there are gains to be had around consistency and feel. This is especially true if you tend to strike your putts off centre more than your would like.

TaylorMade P790 Irons

We were big fans of the original P790, so were interested to see if the new model, which looks a little cleaner from the back, would offer improved performance. The answer is yes, even if only marginally so.

Just to recap, TaylorMade’s P790 is a hollow compact distance model that looks more like a blade than a game improvement iron, but there is a Speed Pocket to provide greater forgiveness and consistency. Internal tungsten weighting and TaylorMade’s Inverted Cone face also assist on the forgiveness front.

One thing we were a little unsure about in the original was the sound off the face, but this new version has addressed that with a slightly quieter sound courtesy of the SpeedFoam that’s designed to dampen vibrations and enhance both sound and feel. We think the two are interlinked, with many golfers equating a quieter sound to a softer feel.

Performance gains

We referred to marginal gains, but that sometimes is all a golfer is looking for. If we start with the looks, then at address, the new model’s topline does appear just a fraction thinner, which may tempt better players in a little more.

In terms of performance, the new P790 gave us a fraction more ball speed than the original but spun 300rpm lower and flew a little lower too. The overall results showed a slight gain in average distance of two to three yards with a 7-iron, with no discernible difference in dispersion.

As we say, small performance gains, but we feel that the improved impact sound will make this great-looking iron more appealing to a wider range of golfers including better players. It should also particularly appeal to mid- to high-handicappers who hanker after the aesthetics of a more refined blade but are all too aware that they need just a little assistance too.

TaylorMade introduced the V Steel fairway wood many years ago and has now revisited it in the SIM fairway woods, but this time with a heavier 80g V-shaped sole weight that helps pave the way to increased ball speed, higher launch, improved forgiveness and better interaction with the turf.

Flying high

We’re big fans of the techy look at address, but it’s not merely aesthetically pleasing to look down on as the white front section on the crown makes it easy to align too.

The SIM was one of our standout performers in this year’s big fairway wood test, generating the highest ball and clubhead speeds and delivering a solid, powerful feel at impact. Perhaps just as importantly, it produced a noticeably higher ball flight than all its rivals bar its sibling, the SIM Max model, a slightly larger-headed club specifically engineered for higher launch and peak trajectories.

It’s only available in two different 3-wood lofts and a 5-wood model, but if you’re looking for a towering ball flight that’s going to give you added stopping power into long par 4s and par 5s, TaylorMade’s SIM is one of the best fairway woods on the market this year.

Different golfers want different things from their hybrids. Some prefer a compact head for maximum versatility from all sorts of lies and greater scope to work the ball; others prefer a slightly bigger head for greater confidence, particularly when playing from the tee.

The face is made from a powerful C300 steel rather than titanium as in the fairway woods, but it retains Twist Face technology to provide some mishit assistance.

A highly playable club

The leading edge has been reshaped relative to previous TaylorMade Rescues, and that helps to make this a highly playable club from fairway or rough, inspiring greater confidence. We feel that many golfers will find the two-tone crown highly appealing too, which should give them further confidence over the ball.

Despite its compact size, there’s ample forgiveness on offer via Twist Face and the Speed Pocket, which is designed to help on mishits low in the face, so you really are getting the best of both world’s with the SIM Max Rescue – the versatility and workability of a compact head, plus the playability and forgiveness of TaylorMade’s various corrective technologies.

We’re also pleased to see a good range of five different lofts from 19˚ through to 31˚ meaning that golfers who are big fans of hybrids can take their hybrid line-up all the way through to the mid-irons if they wish.

In this TaylorMade Soft Response ball review, we analyse the feel and performance but also assess how it compares with its sister ball the Tour Response

TaylorMade Soft Response Ball Review

In the Soft Response, TaylorMade is aiming to offer a ball that provides excellent all round playability and consistency without the same level of feel and spin control of the more expensive models like the TP5 and TP5x balls.

The Soft Response sits alongside its sister ball, the Tour Response, which differs by having a urethane cover. It is worth saying that these are the original version of these balls and the newer TaylorMade Soft Response 2022 golf ball aims to move the performance on.

In the long game, the Soft Response ball performed well. It offered plenty of distance off the tee and provided a strong flight that was consistently true, even in the windy conditions we tested them in.

The Soft Response has a unique dimple pattern for added distance, an ionomer cover and has a low compression to help those with slower swing speeds.

Around the greens, the Soft Response felt fantastic. While it may not spin as much as its urethane counterparts, the Soft Response felt lovely off the putter face in particular, it felt smooth and we had plenty of control.

For many amateur golfers, who are just as likely to hit a drive straight down the middle of the fairway as they are to shell one into the unknown, the idea of a golf ball that offers good all round performance at an affordable price-tag sounds seriously alluring.

Indeed, this is what TaylorMade is offering in the Soft Response. It may not create as much spin around the greens, but its performance in the long game and soft feel off the face make it a great, and cut-price, golf ball.

If you can put up with your chips rolling out a little more, then the Soft Response still feels good whilst also performing impressively in the long game. It also comes in yellow and pink if you want to add some personality to your game.

TaylorMade Truss Putters Review

In this review, GM's Neil Tappin tests out the very striking new putter designs from TaylorMade.

They're called the 'Truss' putters and come with a triangular shape that connects the head and the shaft.

Truss refers to the triangular shape that is used in construction to provide stability, with TaylorMade's designers clearly hoping to produce a putter that is more forgiving.

When you miss-strike a putt out of the heel or toe, the putter head just tends to open or close a little bit and this ends up in golfers losing accuracy and speed control on putts.

By adding more stability, the idea is that you'll hit more putts on your intended line with the intended pace and therefore more putts holed.

The mallet version has a bigger triangle so should be more stable and it certainly felt like there was less unwanted twisting at impact, especially on longer putts.

One thing we really liked was that, even though it's a very striking design, when you put them down behind the ball the triangular shape is nicely hidden, especially on the heel-shafted versions.

It looks pretty classic so you wouldn't necessarily know that there is the technology there to help you.

We found that the classic TB1 bladed model felt really solid with a quiet thud at impact. The slight toe hang meant that blade users should familiar with the face opening and closing during the stroke and therefore square the face more naturally.

We like the shape of the mallet behind the ball but found that it makes a different noise and is much louder than the bladed version.

Clearly TaylorMade is tasking its designers to come up with different ideas in this area of the market to help golfers hole more putts and while this isn't a completely new concept, it's this kind of out-of-the-box thinking that could well be the key to unlocking more consistency on the greens.

The unusual TaylorMade Truss Putters have been revealed, claiming to offer enhanced stability for better off-centre performance as well as improved feel.

Never afraid to think outside the box, TaylorMade may have created one of the more bizarre-looking putter lines in its new Truss putters but say they offer added stability and improved feel.

The theory makes sense. A triangle is one of the strongest known shapes because of its wide base structure and a truss, which forms a similar shape, has a whole host of applications in construction, most notably on bridges, to provide support.

Closer to home in sporting products, two connection points from the handle to the hitting surface has been found to often be better than one (think of the evolution of tennis racket design) and so TaylorMade has incorporated all of this into its Truss putters.

With two points of the hosel entering each putter head, the Truss putters reduce the unsupported mass and cover 50 per more of the topline than a traditional heel shafted putter. This provides added torsional stability – so less tendency to twist, helping putts start and stay online. The added stability means there’s less vibration, so the putters should feel more solid and pleasing too.

The tour players have started to experience the benefits too - Dean Burmester finished in the top three in Dubai recently using the heel-shafted mallet version.

On the face, a thicker cobalt blue Pure Roll insert combines 45° grooves with a softer polymer to increase topspin and improve forward roll across varying surfaces.

Adjustable sole weights allow golfers to achieve a variety of swing weights and CG placements to match the characteristics of their putting stroke and personal preferences.

TaylorMade has done a good job of masking the technology from the address view to not distract you and you’ll also notice the new chrome KBS Stepless Stability CT Tour putter shaft, which weighs 120g and is also designed to offer even more stability at impact.

The Truss putters are available from February 14^th in four different head shapes – a TB blade and a TM mallet, both offered in heel- and center-shafted options – with an RRP of £269.

The new TaylorMade Spider S putters utilise clever tungsten weighting to maximise forgiveness for greater accuracy and improved distance control

Set to replace the popular Spider X putter is the Spider S, the latest mallet range from TaylorMade claiming to offer even more stability and forgiveness.

It does this through use of three high density tungsten weights totaling 150g. Two are positioned in the heel and toe totaling 48g while a tungsten weight bar positioned at the rear helps increase the MOI to over 6,000, making it the most forgiving TaylorMade putter in its 2020 range.

The rear tungsten bar is customized for each shaft length and head weight. It sits within a high-grade aluminium body for perimeter stability.

Three short sightlines at the front of the head assist with alignment while the Pure Roll Insert has been made thicker for a better sound and feel. It also features grooves angled at 45° to encourage more forward roll off the face.

To further increase stability, a black single bend KBS Stepless CT Tour putter shaft comes standard, along with a black Super Stroke Pistol GTR 1.0 grip.

The TaylorMade Spider S putters come in either chalk white or navy colours and go on sale February 7^th with an RRP of £299.

TaylorMade has unveiled two new ball models to sit under the TP5 and TP5x offering all-round performance a lower price point.

The Tour Response is a three-piece ball with a high-spring, 40-compression core made from elastic materials designed to maximize energy transfer for more distance.

A firmer second layer surrounds the soft inner core and allows for increased speed while keeping spin low off the tee.

A cast urethane cover allows the grooves of the wedge to better grip the golf ball for increased greenside spin. A crosslinking chemical reaction forms the urethane material, which creates an irreversible link for improved shear resistance and greater durability while also improving the feel.

For golfers with moderate swing speeds seeking all-round performance with a softer feel, TaylorMade has created the Soft Response ball.

It is also a three-piece ball with a ZnO Flex 35-compression core to maximize energy transfer. It also features a unique Extended Flight Dimple pattern, with shallower U-shaped dimple promoting decreased drag and increased lift, allowing the ball to stay in the air longer at lower spin rates.

TaylorMade SIM Max Irons Revealed - Everything you need to know about the SIM Max and SIM Max OS irons aimed at the mid and high handicapper

Following the launch of the SIM drivers, TaylorMade has unveiled two new SIM Max irons for the mid and high-handicap golfer.

The SIM Max and SIM Max OS feature a similar Speed Bridge design from the outgoing M5 and M6 irons, which connects the back bar to the topline for support and to prevent unwanted vibrations.

Thanks to the face stability offered by Speed Bridge, TaylorMade has incorporated a Thru-Slot Speed Pocket that stretches from heel to toe and completely disconnects the leading edge from the sole of the iron, which in essence creates a free-floating face. This allows the face to hinge upon the topline for enhanced flexibility, more ball speed and greater forgiveness.

Additionally, a uniquely shaped Echo Damping System stretches across the face from heel to toe using multiple contact points to dampen vibration and improve sound and feel.

Damping Channels that wrap around the entire structure allow the damper to efficiently compress at impact, giving the material a place to disperse without inhibiting movement in the face.

TaylorMade’s variable thickness face design, called Inverted Cone Technology (ICT), is now uniquely positioned in each SIM Max and SIM Max OS iron to both increase the sweet spot and minimise the effects of common mis-hits.

TaylorMade SIM Max Irons Review

The new SIM Max is the smaller of the brand’s two new game-improvement irons for 2020, you can read about the updated technology that features here.

It sits in between the outgoing M5 and M6 in terms of size. There’s a generous sole width and hitting area with noticeable offset and a thick topline inspiring confidence over the ball for the inconsistent striker.

The SIM Max OS has a larger profile overall with a thicker topline and more offset, making it look a little more inviting to hit.

With the outgoing M5 there was some definite crossover with the P790 so there is now some distance, literally, between them, with the SIM Max noticeably larger and faster than the M5. In fact, it is much closer to the outgoing M6.

They share the same 7-iron loft of 28.5° and our testing showed they hit the ball a very similar distance. We achieved an average carry of 182 yards with SIM Max compared to 181 with M6 from similar club and ball speeds, although the SIM Max does have a stock shaft that is a quarter of an inch shorter.

The SIM Max does spin around 300 rpm less than M6 and we’d have liked to have seen that paired with a higher launch but SIM Max actually launched a fraction lower, although strike may have played a part here.

The SIM Max OS has a 7-iron loft of 27°, and consequently sent the ball out there five yards further than SIM Max with around 300 rpm less spin and interestingly on a similar launch and flight. Much of the distance gains will be down to the stronger lofts but the SIM Max definitely offered more assistance on off-centre hits.

On the face of it, there isn’t much between SIM Max and M6 but where SIM Max moves things on a level is in the sound, feel and forgiveness. Where the M6 offered a loud, explosive and firm sound off the face, the SIM Max provides the same power in a more subtle way, feeling closer to the P790 than a game improvement club.

We also found it very easy to control direction with the SIM Max. The flight was eerily straight time after time so if you can return the clubface to square at impact you’ll be rewarded with an accurate iron shot, even if you strike the heel or toe.

TaylorMade SIM Drivers Unveiled - All the key details about the new TaylorMade SIM drivers, fairway woods and rescues for 2020

TaylorMade SIM Drivers Unveiled

Details have finally been revealed about the new TaylorMade SIM drivers as well as fairway woods and hybrids. They were spotted last week in the hands of the brand's staff players, including Dustin Johnson and Jon Rahm. Johnson even put a 22° SIM hybrid in play for the first time.

SIM stands for Shape In Motion and it gets its name from the asymmetric sole design said to reduce aerodynamic drag in the last three feet of the downswing to maximise clubhead speed where it is needed most - just before impact.

There are three models - SIM, SIM Max and SIM Max D - which all feature a raised crown and sole to reduce drag and improve airflow throughout the swing. The higher CG that comes with this is counteracted by an Inertia Generator, rotated off-centre and positioned low and back with a heavy steel weight at the rear of the club. This moves the CG lower, optimising launch, increases forgivenes and helps the air travel quicker past the clubhead during the downswing.

The TaylorMade SIM driver features a 10g sliding weight that can create up to 20 yards of draw or fade bias.

The SIM Max driver is more forgiving thanks to an eight per cent larger face and heavier Inertia Generator in the rear of the clubhead.

The SIM Max D is an even more draw-biased version that has an 18 per cent larger face than SIM and divergent topline masking, which makes the driver look more open at address.

Also new for 2020 is an ultra-light weight chromium carbon crown with a chalk white topline that creates contrast with the black clubface to help frame the ball at address and improve alignment.

The Speed Injected Twist Face from the M5 and M6 returns on the SIM drivers, but it is now progressive by loft for even more precise performance.

The TaylorMade SIM, SIM Max and SIM Max D drivers will on sale February 7th. SIM has an RRP of £479 in 8°, 9° and 10.5° lofts with stock shaft offerings including the Mitsubishi Diamana S Limited 60 and Project X’s HZRDUS Smoke Green 70.

The SIM Max and Max D drivers have an RRP of £449 in 9°, 10.5° and 12° lofts with stock shaft including Fujikura Ventus Blue 6 and Ventus Red 5. SIM Max D stock shafts include the UST Mamiya Helium.

Joining the drivers are the SIM, SIM Max and SIM Max D fairway woods.

The iconic V Steel design has been reinvented with the new 180cc SIM fairway with an 80g sole weight creating an extremely low CG that allows for increased ball speed, higher launch and improved forgiveness on low-face hits.

It also features a new Zatech titanium face. It’s the first time TaylorMade has used this rare and ultra-strong material in a metalwood. It is only made in small batches using a unique process that improves the strength of the face while maintaining a high level of ductility.

A more rounded leading edge improves the club’s initial contact with the turf, while the V Steel sole further raises heel and toe sections of the sole away from the ground and improves versatility.

Matching the aesthetics of the SIM driver family, the chromium carbon crown and contrasting chalk white colour help frame the ball at address and improve alignment.

The larger 185cc SIM Max steel fairway woods feature a C300 face material and is designed for higher launch and peak trajectories, with extremely long distance and improved playability.

Finally, the oversized 190cc SIM Max D fairway has been optimised for forgiveness and golfers seeking a draw- bias design.

TaylorMade introduced Twist Face to its fairways in 2019 and has carried this into SIM. Like the SIM drivers, the faces have been modified to counteract the gear effect on common mis-hits in the high-toe and low-heel. Although the concept is the same as in the driver, the exact geometry is slightly different to account for the unique mass properties and impact location patterns in fairway woods compared to drivers.

The Speed Pocket in the SIM fairways has been engineered to provide increased ball speed to the entire face while improving forgiveness on low-face impacts. A slot insert has also been designed to sit flush with the sole to improve sole interaction and eliminate turf drag.

The SIM, SIM Max and SIM Max D fairways will be available from February 7th. The SIM has an RRP of £369 in Rocket 14°, 15° and 19° lofts. The SIM Max and Max D have an RRP of £269 in Rocket 14°, 15°, 18°, 21° and 24° while the SIM Max D will be offered in lofts of 16°, 19° and 22°.

The SIM Max Rescue has also incorporated V Steel technology into a hybrid for the first time to deliver improved turf interaction and reduced friction when playing from various lies. A reshaped leading edge further improves playability and strike conditions.

A more rounded toe and adjusted face angle gives the SIM Max Rescue a more confidence-inspiring shape at address for all levels of golfers. It utilises the same C300 Steel face used in the SIM Max fairway woods to help improve ball speed, durability and overall performance. The corrective technologies of Twist Face and Speed Pocket offer improved performance and forgiveness on mis-hits on the toe, heel and low on the face.

The SIM Max Rescue will be available from February 7th with an RRP of £229 in lofts of 19°, 22°, 25°, 28° and 31°.

TaylorMade SIM Drivers Review

The TaylorMade SIM replaced the impressive M5 and M6 drivers back in 2020 and we’ve been testing them over the last month or so to see if there are performance gains to be had. You can read about the technology on the new SIM metalwoods here. Fast forward to 2022 however and TaylorMade has gone one step forward with the TaylorMade Stealth drivers launching in February 2022 - those drivers already made a significant impression on golf's equipment landscape.

Looks The sole view is where you are going to notice the biggest difference in terms of looks. The asymmetric Inertia Generator is immediately obvious and on SIM you will notice TaylorMade have done away with this central weight track. Ultimately this was because that most players put the central weight all the way back in the head for forgiveness, which meant that the weight track was becoming slightly redundant. You still have the front track to add draw or fade bias.

When looking down on the ball, gone is that duller, more matte finish that was on the M-Series of drivers. In its place the crown of the drivers is a little bit brighter and the drivers also have a new chalk white finish, which we like. Not drastically different, still easy to align, but definitely more modern and the SIM and the SIM Max do appear slightly bigger to look down on. The SIM Max in particular is a lot bigger and more generous looking behind the ball than last year’s M6.

Feel When we talk about feel what we are really talking about is the sound. Last year I used the M6 and one of the things I loved was the feel. The sound was powerful and dull but not excessively so.

The SIM Max may be a touch louder than last years M6. When comparing the M5 and SIM, it is hard to tell any difference in sound or feel and that is a good thing because last year’s TaylorMade drivers sounded fantastic. I don’t think that is any different with the two new SIM drivers.

Distance We tested all the drivers, the SIM and M models, in 9° in the same Diamana X-Flex shaft which is one of the stock options for 2020. For the M6 I was delivering club head speed of 113.3 mph, that was delivering ball speed of 159 mph. All of this created a carry distance of 278 yards, which is really strong performance.

In the SIM Max, the clubhead speed took an immediate jump up to 114.7. That gave me a ball speed of 163.2mph, four mph faster. So with the Max I was creating a little bit more spin but in terms of total carry distance there was a clear jump.

In the M5 I was creating a clubhead speed of 115.6 mph, that was delivering me a ball-speed of 161.6 mph. This delivered me a total carry distance of 282 yards. Moving into the SIM, the club head speed was 115.8 mph, so a tiny fraction up. Ball speed of 164 mph, again up slightly. The total carry distance was 287 so a little bit longer with the SIM compared to the M5 and a little bit longer with the SIM Max than I was with the M6.

You can make of that data what you will but all drivers were set up in the same way but it does seem as if the work TaylorMade have done to the aerodynamics has delivered a little bit more clubhead speed and a little bit more ball speed which meant overall, more distance.

Accuracy I used the M6 last year because I felt like I could control it. I’ve not had a chance to fully test the accuracy of the SIM models on the course but hitting on the range, if there was one driver I would be most comfortable with in keeping the ball on the golf course it would be SIM. It just clicked with me and I was able to hit a series of good shots with it, like I was in complete control of it.

If you are tempted to get the SIM or SIM Max, think about your own game. If you are someone with a consistent miss, lets say you miss right, then the ability in the SIM to move the sole weight and put it into a draw-bias will help you hit more fairways for sure.

Alternatively if your strike pattern is out of the heel or out of the toe then that extra forgiveness, that higher MOI that you get from the SIM Max might well be the way to go.

TaylorMade P790 Ti Iron Review - Our verdict on the new TaylorMade P790 Ti iron packed full of technology that will set you back £2,699 for a set

TaylorMade P790 Ti Iron Review

Brands like PXG and Honma have proven there is a demand for the ultra-premium iron set and the P790 Ti is TaylorMade’s foray into this lucrative market.

It comes soon after the launch of the updated P790 iron, which will certainly be a popular choice among varying abilities of player, but in terms of the construction the P790 Ti is a very different beast.

It gets its name from a special form of titanium used that has a greater strength to weight ratio, meaning TaylorMade could make the faces thinner to increase ball speed and save weight, while maintaining the all-important durability.

Unique to this iron is also a tungsten backbar. It weighs on average 119g, nearly half the mass of the clubhead, and slots in nicely in the rear portion of the cavity.

Looks wise, it differs significantly from the P790 despite both coming within the ‘players’ category. It has an obviously wider sole, more offset, thicker topline and longer blade length from heel to toe. It also has a lighter, less reflective finish.

The lofts are also different too – the 7-iron is 28.5°, which is two degrees stronger than the P790, but the stock shaft length is the same.

We hit shots with both 7-irons on the Foresight Sports GC2 launch monitor using range balls at West Hill Golf Club and there were some noticeable differences.

Firstly the ball flight with the P790 Ti was higher, it seemed by a good 2-3 yards. The same hollow head filled with Speedfoam design as P790 provided that hot, explosive feel with a pleasing sound too although it felt like the P790 Ti had a touch more oomph behind it. Sure enough, it gave us nearly 2mph more ball speed.

The spin was similar at just under 6000 rpm and as a result of the extra speed and higher flight, we achieved an average carry of 174 yards versus 172 with the P790.

This is partly a testament to how good the latest P790 is but in P790 Ti there is an option that will suit a player seeking more help on their iron shots. Through its size alone it will be more stable and efficient on slight off-centre hits and the extra launch while maintaining spin should help slower swing speeds increase carry distance.

The sole interacts with the ground differently too. With the wider sole and a little extra bounce, the clubhead is encouraged to glide rather than dig. This will help the majority of golfers increase the margin for error on the strike.

As a golfer that likes to compress the ball, I found the turf interaction of P790 Ti a little cumbersome, with the extra offset encouraging me to contact the ground a touch too early on occasion.

The other stumbling block is of course the price. Working out at £385 a stick, the P790 Ti represents a big investment in a club that serious, frequent players might find is a touch chunky on their eye and doesn’t offer double the performance of the 2019 P790.

Looks On the outgoing TP Black Copper Collection, the copper colour barely came through, even after long-term use. But on the TP Patina models, it shows up brilliantly on the sole, immediately catching your eye on the shelf.

The new Patina finish certainly creates a premium look that far exceeds the modest price tag but how much this will change over time remains to be seen. The lighter grey colour on top means a black sightline is more appropriate. It doesn’t contrast as sharply as white on black, but it certainly highlights the face angle on the larger shapes.

GM Verdict While the Spider X is a very impressive mallet offering from TaylorMade, it won’t be to everyone’s taste. The new TP Patina Collection is an excellent alternative, comprising a mix of classic blades and modern mallets to suit a variety of stroke types and visual preferences.

The Soto and Juno will please the traditionalist while the new Del Monte provides a closer to face balanced option in a wide blade shape. The three Ardmore and Dupage mallets provide greater stability on off-centre hits while all seven models offer excellent roll thanks to the thicker grooved insert, which seemed to give putts a little bit more speed, therefore requiring less effort and shorter, more controlled stroke.

These putters offered a firm, solid feel with a fairly loud ‘pop’ sound at impact, which we really enjoyed. Feel is enhanced by the SuperStroke Pistol GT 1.0 grip while the stepless KBS CT Tour steel shaft tops off what is a excellent all round putter range offering very good value, bolstered by the fact the sole weights will be adjustable from January next year.

It was a theory we were keen to test out so we hit the wedge with the brand new face, having just removed the airtight sticker, and then tested it again after the face had rusted.

The Foresight Sports GCQuad launch monitor couldn’t provide any conclusive evidence to suggest the rusty face produced more spin than the brand new face. In fact, on a 50-yard pitch and full shot, it generated less spin and launched the ball higher, suggesting there was less friction stopping the ball riding up the face at impact.

That said, when testing on the course there was some shots that seemed to fly lower and check up more than shots hit with a plated wedge. It just goes to show that there are so many variables when it comes to strike, especially with wedge shots, it can be difficult to accurately ascertain genuine performance differences.

Looks will play a big part here too though. Some golfers won’t like the look of a rusty wedge, feeling it makes it look worn out and older than it is, while others will. The rusty section does frame the ball nicely and the wear pattern that will appear over time provides a narrowed focus over the ball.

It does also significantly reduce glare from the sun although if you have a darker shade of brown sand in your bunkers, it could make alignment more difficult.

Differences in sound and feel were also tricky to distinguish although if we had to choose, the rusty-faced version arguably did feel a touch softer. The two sole grind options should provide enough versatility for the majority of players and the overall playability of the wedge was impressive, especially when it came to the clean turf interaction from tight lies.
