I have been working in the golf industry for many years now, specifically in golf equipment which means I often get to see, test and game a lot of cool golf gear. Given the different types of gear, number of brands, and sheer range of products out there, it can be easy to get desensitized to it all but every so often a product will come around that I just needed to use, or I just really, really wanted. For example I had to get my hands on a pair of the Nike Air Zoom Victory Tour 3 shoes (which are part of my regular shoe rotation), and I love Peter Millar apparel as well so that fits in this bracket too. Well another is a golf watch from TAG Heuer.

I grew up seeing the Tiger Woods/TAG Heuer partnership and these watches, especially with the new models which have GPS functionality and versatility at the core of the designs, are always going to be aspirational to me. Now I should admit I do not have the spare cash lying around to possibly pull the trigger on a purchase like this, but many of you reading will, and with money it is all relative isn't it? What is expensive or cheap will vary person to person.

So therefore I considered it my duty to let you know that PGA TOUR Superstore currently sells several TAG watches, including the E4 Connected Calibre Golf Edition. It is my duty because these watches are actually harder to find than you might think, so I have included a couple of links below on the model we tested a year or so ago.

Now I am not just writing aimlessly about these products, at Golf Monthly we have actually tested TAG Heuer golf watches before and the performance is very good indeed. As previously mentioned, Deputy Editor Joel Tadman got his hands on the E4 back in 2023, and it came oh so close to getting a perfect, five stars out of five grade.

The model worn by Tommy Fleetwood as a TAG ambassador, the E4 got heavy improvements from the previous model which came out in 2022. These include the new automated shot-tracker, redesigned software and an all new buckle with magnetic ball marker built into the strap. It was also easier to control the watch’s golf functions, plus you now get high-resolution 2D maps showing hazards and distances on more than 40,000 golf courses around the world. Speaking of which the display itself is crystal-clear and looks fantastic, whilst the GPS functionality, and general usability of the watch was reasonably simple. In terms of battery life you get 5+ hours of full golf shot tracking, which is one of the longest we’ve tested and 30 percent more than the prior version.

The Driving Range feature is a very cool one that sets this watch/app experience apart. Furthermore, the fact that drives are tracked automatically now using the watch’s accelerometer and gyroscope to mark your tee shot and then subsequent shot, makes it more seamless to collect the data it requires.

Then as you play more and the data accumulates, you will be able to see where previous shots have landed, and you will be able to use the data to decide on which clubs work best on each shot. This optimizing of strategy really does set the E4 apart. Ultimately, if cost is no issue to you, this is undoubtedly one of the best golf watches around that has plenty of unique features for golfers to benefit from. TAG Heuer Connected Calibre E4 Golf Edition Watch Review

TAG Heuer shook up the golf GPS watch scene when it entered the market a few years ago with its super premium offering. Minor updates have followed since and it has even signed Tommy Fleetwood as a brand ambassador. 

Now there’s a new version for 2022 called the Connected Calibre E4 golf edition, which we were fortunate enough to test recently on the golf course at Burghley Park Golf Club.

Significant technical improvements include the new automated shot-tracker, redesigned software and an all new buckle with magnetic ball marker built into the strap. It should also be easier to control the watch’s golf functions, plus you now get high-resolution 2D maps showing hazards and distances on more than 40,000 golf courses around the world. All of this for a mere $2,650/£2,200, making it the most expensive golf GPS watch on the market today.

On first inspection, this watch isn’t massively different to the previous version. The dial on the side is a little more responsive and the addition of the ball marker makes the strap feel different, but it retains the sporty, premium look and feel. The setting up process remains a little laborious - it requires you to pair it with both the Google Wear OS app and the TAG Heuer app to maximise functionality. It is also worth adding in your carry distances with each club if you know them in order to the get the club recommendations on the course.

The watch display is detailed and crystal clear, although we’d have preferred the maps to be a little brighter. When playing, random patches of rough are coloured brown like bunkers, which is somewhat confusing until you realise that bunkers are actually displayed in a slightly lighter shade of brown. This may seem overly critical, but when you enter a market at this price, you lay yourself open to forensic analysis!

You use the dial or ‘crown’ as TAG Heuer call it to scroll up and down the 2D view of the hole on the watch screen. A red dot moves with it and the distance, as well as the suggested club to hit for said distance, changes accordingly. For more information like front and back numbers, you are required to tap the distance on the screen where you’ll also see the par of the hole.

The Driving Range feature is a very cool one that sets this watch/app experience apart. Furthermore, the fact that drives are tracked automatically now using the watch’s accelerometer and gyroscope to mark your tee shot and then subsequent shot, makes it more seamless to collect the data it requires. 

Over time, as data accumulates, the watch will essentially create a ‘heat map’ for every hole in the app, which shows where shots landed on previous rounds color coded by your score. This allows you to see what clubs work best on each tee shot, which is ideal for optimising strategy if you play the same course most of the time. 

You can manually tag the locations of all shots using the watch - just press the button and select the club - which will give you more performance insights post round. Why the automatic shot tracking is only limited to the first shot on each hole is a mystery, perhaps (hopefully) future updates will allow the ability track all shots on each hole. The club recommendations are somewhat useful, although the fact that wind and slope aren’t factored in means you need to take them with a healthy pinch of salt. The magnetic ball marker on the strap is a nice idea although in reality it is very fiddly to use and no more convenient than using a coin in your pocket, arguably less if anything.

The app is another part of the package (along with the free sleeve of TAG Heuer emblazoned Titleist Pro V1 balls) that sets it apart. You can toggle between 2D and 3D versions depending on your preference. The map interface has been completely redesigned so you can see more of it with greater detail visible at once such as distances, club information, scores, and hole numbers displayed as you play. This means you’re able to see both the distance to target and distance of the tracking shot at the same time, which is very useful in practice scenarios.

The final thing to mention is the battery life. Despite all the features in play, you get 5+ hours of full golf shot tracking, which is one of the longest we’ve tested and 30 percent more than the prior version. 

We came away from a round using this latest TAG Heuer watch content with how easy it was to use and the information it provided, but couldn't help feeling there are other options, like the SkyCaddie LX5 and Garmin Approach S62, that do a similar job for considerably less money. However, if cost isn't an issue, this is undoubtedly one of the best golf watches around that has plenty of unique features for golfers to benefit from, but they do require the user to be fully immersed in the concept.

Cheap v Expensive Golf Watch Test

The popularity of smartwatches and GPS watches has risen over the last 10 years, with athletes around the world utilizing the performance-enhancing features and data these watches can deliver. Golf has been one of the sports that has benefitted the most from GPS watches and thanks to advances in technology, players are able to use these wearable devices to shave a lot of shots off their round through better club selections and strategic decisions. 

Some of the features on the best golf watches will not only tell you distances to the front, middle and back of the green but will help you decide which club you should play, how far you’re hitting each shot and even help you analyze your game after your round. For that reason, a GPS watch can be one of the best game-improvement gadgets a golfer can buy. But while there are some very pricey offerings on the market, GPS watches don’t have to be an expensive purchase. In this comparison, Joel Tadman puts the entry level Bushnell iON Edge GPS watch and the super premium TAG Heuer Connected Calibre E4 Golf Edition watch to the test to outline what the key differences are between the two and find out if extra investment is justified.

Price

In terms of price there is a pretty hefty price gap between these two watches. The iON Edge comes in at around $120, making it one of the best value golf watches on the market. Conversely, the TAG Heuer Connected Calibre E4 Golf Edition watch is one of the most feature-packed watches around. But it will set you back a pretty penny, costing a whopping $2,650, which is approximately 22-times more expensive than the Bushnell. But which is better for your needs as a golfer?

Ease Of Use

Testing both out side-by-side during a round at Burghley Park Golf Club in Lincolnshire, we were able to see the main differences between each watch. The Bushnell required very little time to set up with the watch ready to go in a matter of seconds. The watch can partner with the Bushnell GPS app, which takes a little more time but provides a variety of 3D hole-by-hole maps that can help you formulate a better strategy off the tee. The one downside of the Bushnell is that its touch screen is less responsive and slightly clunkier than the TAG, but it is still very straightforward and easy-to-use. 

Conversely, the TAG Heuer has noticeably more going on and as a result there are a few more steps to take before you can begin to use the watch. You need to pair it with a couple of different apps before you get going in order to get the most out of it. You should also go into the TAG Heuer app and enter your club distances because when you arrive at your ball, the watch will gauge your distance to the flag and give you suggestions on what club you should play. While it may look a little complicated at first, it is ergonomic and easy to use after getting the hang of it. The full color touchscreen is very clear and responsive and the combines well with the two buttons and dial on the side.

Functionality

For $120, the Bushnell provides a surprising level of features. As well as front, middle and back distances on the green, you can access distances to hazards and lay-up points, measure your shot distances and keep score too. But we really liked the Bushnell’s dynamic green mapping feature, which allowed us to change the pin position on the touch screen to get more precise distances to the hole. If you are looking for something a little more basic to help you get around the course, the functionality in the Bushnell is perfect as long as you don't mind a basic, archaic screen display.

As you might expect, you get a lot more features with the TAG watch, including most of those included in the Bushnell and then some. The TAG Heuer watch can automatically track tee shots and the shot locations of shots hit with other clubs can be easily entered manually. Simply walk up to your ball, select the club you want to use on the watch and hit away. 

The app is also very useful after your round as players can use the 3D hole maps on the TAG Heuer app to visually plot where you played each shot and what score you got from that shot. In the driving range mode, it will even color code your tee shots by score so you can see which position and club produces the best result. You can also receive call, text and email notifications. Ultimately its features are much more comprehensive than the Bushnell, providing more insights during play, more data on almost every aspect of your game after your round and more features you can use away from the course.

The TAG Heuer also comes with a more premium look and feel than the Bushnell, and while its strap may not be to everyone’s taste, you do get another strap option in the box, along with a sleeve of TAG engraved Pro V1 golf balls. And if you thought TAG hadn’t already thought of everything, the watch also comes with a nifty magnetic ball marker that clips nicely into its strap. While we thought this marker was quite small, we would recommend also carrying around one of the other markers you'll find in our best ball markers guide.

Which Watch Should You Choose?

The Bushnell iON Edge GPS watch is a simple, easy-to-use GPS watch that can give players trustworthy distances to the flag. It is efficient and, combined with the features available on the Bushnell app, can help players on a low budget improve their game and play more consistent golf. 

The TAG Heuer Connected Calibre E4 Golf Edition watch somewhat befits the price tag although much of the price will come down to the brand name over functionality. From its features to its packaging, TAG has put together a luxury piece of kit here that has all the bells and whistles you’d expect from a premium GPS watch that makes it one of the best around. While these are both excellent offerings, it’s worth noting that there are many other models that sit in between these two watches that arguably provide a better blend of features and value, like the Garmin Approach S62, SkyCaddie LX5 and Shot Scope V3.

The TAG Heuer Connected Golf Edition comes packed with features and excellent functionality making it one of the best GPS golf watches in terms of pure performance. You might even see it on the wrist of Tommy Fleetwood, who recently signed as an ambassador.

Admittedly, it is more of a niche option given its ultra-premium price point, but TAG Heuer has definitely made some significant upgrades to the previous model.

First up, thanks to the two extra buttons on either side of the main dial, navigating through the different features is far simpler, as is tagging shots, which is probably the most important aspect of a GPS watch. Additionally, the bluetooth synchronisation process with the app is a lot quicker.

To mark shots, you simply press the top right button, hit your shot, then press it again when you’ve reached your ball and input what club you hit. So, you really do get a true indication of how far you’re hitting each club.

Another thing worth mentioning is the graphics. The hole maps are really clear and, now that you can twist the main dial to scroll, it's really straightforward to pick out certain points you want to hit to.

One of the big features of this product, which is quite unique to the market, is what TAG Heuer call the driving zone. Once you’ve connected the watch to the app, this feature will plot all your drives on a certain hole and colour code the positions based on your scores.

TAG Heuer Launches Special Edition Golf GPS Watch

Renowned watch company TAG Heuer has launched a new special edition watch called the TAG Heuer Connected Golf Edition, available in limited quantities.

This is the second time TAG Heuer have unveiled a golf specific watch designed for the golf community. The first was launched last year and we were one of the first to review it - you can see our verdict on it by clicking the link below.

£1600 TAG Heuer Connected Modular 45 Golf Edition GPS Watch Review

The watch has an ultra-lightweight black titanium case and the exclusive matte black ceramic bezel features 18 engraved and lacquered graduations. These provide a clear indication on the scores for each hole. 

The crown is now flanked by two functional pushers at 2 and 4 o’clock which are used to record shots and shot distances with optimal precision in action.

The watch has a flush OLED touchscreen protected by a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal and is presented on a special white rubber strap with green stitching and a texture that resembles the pattern on a golf ball. 

It also comes with a black rubber alternative for a more subtle and formal aesthetic.

The watch works in conjunction with TAG Heuer's Golf App which gives the golfer insights to improve scores and displays 99 per cent of golf courses around the world (40,000 maps). The app is available for free to everyone on iOS and Android.

In addition to golf, the newly introduced TAG Heuer Sports application also supports tracking of running, cycling, walking or fitness sessions.

The watch is fitted with a magnetic battery charger, and comes with a dedicated travel pouch and accessory box that contains four TAG Heuer-branded tees, a branded divot tool, three branded balls and the additional black rubber strap.

Products like this don’t come around all too often in golf so when we heard that TAG Heuer was releasing a golf GPS watch, we had to give it a try.

As you might expect, even the unboxing of the product is a special experience – it comes with three Titleist Pro V1 balls emblazoned with the TAG Heuer logo.

With it’s white strap and green trim, the watch has a sporty, athletic design that doesn’t scream golf. Along with the plain black rubber strap option, this means you can wear it away from the course without looking silly. It’s a touch chunky but surprisingly lightweight and the strap is easily adjustable to fit your wrist, making it comfortable without distracting you as you play.

Setting up the watch with its full functionality requires two free apps to be downloaded on your smartphone, the Google Wear OS and TAG Heuer Golf apps. Going through the various set-up steps in both doesn’t take too long and once you’ve entered the Bluetooth pairing code and downloaded the course, you’re ready to play some golf.

The initial display is bright and bold, clearly displaying the landing area up ahead on a full colour, 2D hole map. Arced lines show you the distance to reach and carry specific points and you can scroll up and down using your finger on the touchscreen (even using your glove hand).

The detail is useful enough, but you can use the TAG Heuer GPS app for a deeper dive, which features brilliant 3D flyovers of the hole.

What is more, if you enter how far you carry each club in your bag before you play in the app's settings, it will then tell you on the 3D map what club you have left to the green should you hit your ball to a certain position off the tee. Very clever.

The accuracy of the hole maps was generally very good, tallying closely with what our laser rangefinder was telling us, and distances were quick to update. It lacks the big numbers front, middle and back distances that many golfers like to glance at quickly and some of the hole maps had one or two more or less bunkers than were actually there. So perhaps the maps aren’t as up to date as they could be, but this didn’t really affect our decision making or strategy choices.

TAG Heuer says it has a 25-hour battery life and to preserve it, you can opt to run the GPS technology from your phone rather than the watch. The watch also goes into a black and white power save mode if left inactive for more than a few seconds. You can easily add your score, including putts taken, as you play and even tag shot locations and clubs used, which helps with the performance analysis after your round. Text and call notifications mean you can stay connected with the outside world if you want.

Once back in the clubhouse, if you’ve been tagging your shots you will then have access to a whole host of performance stats via the TAG Heuer app. This includes this like fairways hit, greens in regulation, scrambling, putts per hole and scoring distribution among par threes, fours and fives.

They’re editable if you need to and presented in a colourful format that is easy to digest. The dashboard is a little basic and the fact shots aren’t automatically tracked is added faff while out on the course but it’s arguably worth the extra effort to gain an understanding as to where you need to improve.

It’s important to note that this is so much more than just a golf GPS watch. It is a luxurious, lifestyle timepiece with multiple moderns features where the golf functionality happens to be one of the best on the market.

The TAG Heuer Connected Modular 45 ‘Golf Edition’ digital wristwatch is made from shock-resistant materials, features a 45mm touchscreen, is pre-loaded with more than 39,000 courses and provides comprehensive performance analysis post round via the connected app.

It features a black ceramic bezel ring, which is laser engraved with a scale of 1 to 18 – indicating the 18 holes in a round of golf. Filled in with white lacquer, the scale stands out from the predominantly black finish of the lightweight watch. It also boasts a 25-hour battery life, 4gb of storage and lets you send messages, receive notifications, play music and download other apps.

Game Booster

Blending style and functionality, the Tag Heuer Connected Modular Edition is not simply a GPS watch, it’s also a fashion item and an impressive piece of connective technology.

TAG Heuer Launches New Golf GPS Watch

Swiss watchmaker TAG Heuer has revealed a new GPS Watch along with a smartphone app to help golfers get accurate distances to precise points on the course.

The TAG Heuer Connected Modular 45 'Golf Edition' digital wristwatch is made from shock-resistant materials, features a 45mm touchscreen, is pre-loaded with more than 39,000 courses and provides comprehensive performance analysis post round via the app.

Features include a black ceramic bezel ring, which is laser engraved with a scale of 1 to 18 – indicating the 18 holes in a round of golf. Filled in with white lacquer, the scale stands out from the predominantly black finish of the lightweight watch.

The bold black ceramic lugs complement the sandblasted case and caseback, which are fashioned from black PVD titanium.

It also boasts a 25-hour battery life, 4gb of storage and lets you send messages, receive notifications, play music and download other apps.

It also allows you to record your scores, with your position then displayed on a leaderboard.

By recording your scores and each individual shot, the app will work out your putting average, longest drive, score distribution and more.

All of these statistics can be sent to your nearby smartphone to help you analyse each element of your round and improve.

The app is continuously updating, adding more courses and making changes to the existing ones already on the app.
