But to put this theory to the test, we gave the Q Follow to three ordinary golfers who either carry their bag, use a push trolley or use a conventional electric trolley to try it out for a round at the stunning West Hill Golf Club for the very first time and see if it delivers an elevated playing experience. 

After a brief demonstration, it was time for our three testers to tee off with the weather set fair and spirits high.

Dan Griffin (hcp 8) normally uses a carry bag at his home course as it features a lot of heather and he finds the extra portability easier when taking his bag into the heavier rough and sometimes only advancing his ball 20 yards. 

The picturesque heathland course at West Hill provided a similar topography for Dan to deal with, and he found the Q Follow was more than up to the task when his ball found its way into the deep stuff. 

“The Follow mode is incredible, just so simple and ideal when you've hit a good drive and want a stress-free walk down the fairway where you can take in the surroundings or think about your next shot.”

“I found myself in the heather a few times today and I could leave the trolley in the light rough and use the Remote to guide it down to where my next shot was to change clubs.”

“I always carried because I thought it was the most efficient way to get around the golf course. But having the remote control and the Follow function gives me the perfect blend of everything.”

As a regular carrier of a bag, Dan could certainly feel the difference between using the Q Follow for 18 holes versus carrying a full bag of 14 clubs. 

“My shoulders feel better and I generally just feel a lot freer. My back feels great too as you don’t have to put your bag on your back after every shot. I feel fresher for sure.”

Our next tester James Earwicker (hcp 17) primarily uses a push trolley when he plays golf as he carries a lot of extra accessories in his bag that lead it to becoming heavy. 

His first experience with the Q Follow really opened up his eyes to the extent to which actually pushing a push trolley exerts a lot of energy. 

“What I’ve noticed with the Q Follow is it's taken a lot of effort out of pushing the trolley. It's versatile, easy to move and really easy to get used to the controls.” 

Stability was one thing James was most curious about when comparing the Q Follow to his push trolley.

“I was impressed with how stable it was across rough terrain,” James explained. “There’s lots of tree roots, gravel and uneven paths here and I’m surprised how well it's taken to the terrain - it never looked like tipping over once.” 

James’ peace of mind when using the Q Follow was thanks to its purpose-built chassis with a low centre of gravity that means uneven surfaces and any other natural humps and bumps expected on a golf course are confidently traversed.

The rear stabiliser, which incorporates two dual-ball bearing wheels, allows the Q Follow to go up steep inclines without the threat of tipping over backwards. This gave our testers the real freedom to walk the course with the confidence the trusty Q Follow was behind them at a safe distance. 

Our final tester, Dave Walters (hcp 9), has been using an electric trolley ever since a back injury curtailed his ability to carry. 

“It’s so different to my current electric trolley and I love how it totally takes my mind off my bag and clubs and I can just send it on its way from tee to green as I walk ahead of it.” 

“My first electric trolley had such limited functionality compared to the Q Follow and being able to test this has fully converted me. It's the future.” 

After a successful 18 holes at West Hill, all three of our testers seemed to have been won over by the Q Follow’s innovative and easy-to-use features. 

While all three of them arrived at West Hill Golf Club using different methods to transport their clubs, it seems they have all left convinced the Q Follow is the way forward.

1. Styling The unique chassis design gives a futuristic, high-end look, which is combined with sporty wheels with red receivers, reminiscent of brake discs on a sports car. It’s small touches like these that help the design stand out from the crowd and when we used it, it certainly turned a few heads in the car park and received a lot of interest.

2. Options The X9 Follow is made in Great Britain and available in three stock colour options; Metallic Silver, Metallic Black and Pearlescent White as featured in the video above.

Components 

3. Battery The lightweight 12-volt Lithium battery is design to fit a Stewart trolley and comes with a two-year warranty. Golfers can now upgrade to an increased capacity battery, which provides around 40 per cent more power and should be enough to manage 36 holes on flat golf courses.

4. Handset The rechargeable handset connects with the trolley via Bluetooth, allowing for remote control, follow and manual capabilities at the touch of a button. It can easily be clipped on to your belt buckle or back pocket, as well as on to the trolley itself, to keep the movement of the trolley smooth when in Follow mode.

5. Operation When you press the ‘Follow’ button on the handset, the trolley will follow you when you begin walking and will match your walking pace, even down hills thanks to a sophisticated breaking system. When the handset is close to the trolley, say when you clip it to the handle to play your shot, it is inside a “neutral zone” and therefore the trolley remains stationary.

6. Steering The handset can also be used as a remote control, as with previous Stewart Golf electric trolleys. This allows the X9 Follow to be sent off to near the next tee as you approach the green or for it to meet you up the fairway after chipping out from the trees.

Performance

7. Control The unique nature of the Follow design means it does take a little bit of getting used to before you have complete confidence in it. Once you do that, though, you have the ability to walk the course hands-free, but with the benefits that using an electric trolley brings. This is as near as you can get to having a caddie without actually having one.

8. Ease of use It takes nine or so holes to learn when best to press the ‘Follow’ button, and to get used to clipping the remote on to your belt. After that, though, the technology is very easy to use and the hands-free nature of the function means you're free to take a drink of water, eat a snack or hold your umbrella on wet days. It's worth switching the manual or remote modes when walking on narrow paths or bridges to gain the extra control you need in these situations.

9. Chassis The design is very sturdy, and a stability bar means it will cope very well with hills and not tip over backwards. However, that stability makes it bigger than a lot of electric trolleys. There's also lots of holders for balls, pencils and tees on the handle, which is a nice touch.

10. Summary As expected, all this cutting edge technology comes with a relatively high price point but you are getting a lot for your money. There really is no other trolley like it and it genuinely makes using it a fun and enjoyable experience. You will be the envy of your golf club if you rock up to the first tee with the X9 Follow, for sure.

Stewart Golf R1-S Push Trolley Review - Key Technology

The Stewart Golf R1-S Push trolley features a unique folding system that removes any external mechanisms, which also means it's much less likely to catch on something and break. It's a design that also means that when folded it fits in your boot with plenty of room to spare. This unique design also keeps dirt and dust away from the mechanism and that should mean that it lasts longer than other trolleys.

The Stewart Golf R1-S Push also comes with a strap system that works brilliantly at holding bags in place, while a footbrake also secures it on hilly terrain.

While some will prefer a brake on the handle, the Stewart Golf designers tell us that a handle brake becomes slacker quicker because of the extra wiring, which is why they stuck with a foot version.

Golf Monthly Verdict

The Stewart Golf R1-S Push is an excellent model that only improves on the Stewart Golf R1 Push trolley. The folding mechanism should ensure that the trolley lasts for a long time, as there’s very little that can go wrong, while the folding and unfolding itself takes seconds and is very intuative. As one of the smallest trolleys on the market when folded, its compact size is also particularly impressive.

There are a few very minor quibbles. The console can get in the way of getting your clubs out of the bottom of your bag, while its shallow space doesn't hold as many items as some of its push trolley rivals. We also prefer using hand brakes to foot brakes, however, we can't argue with Stewart Golf's logic that less brake wiring in the frame means it will be more reliable and durable.

All in all this is a well thought out trolley that should be very high on your list to try.

British trolley manufacturer Stewart Golf has announced the launch of the colourful new Stewart Golf R1-S Push trolley.

Succeeding the R1 Push trolley, three bold new wheel colour options have been added to the current range, which means the R1-S is now available with an anodic black or pearl white frame and a choice of black, white, red, blue and green wheels. The limited ‘Platinum Edition’ frame will also be available with all five colour options, making the total number of variants 15.

British trolley manufacturer Stewart Golf has revealed a new version of their innovative F1 Lithium model; the world’s most compact folding remote controlled trolley.

The Stewart Golf F1-S Remote electric trolley is a new version of the F1 Lithium previously launched in 2008 and is aimed squarely at those golfers who desire the freedom of a well balanced, remote control machine on the golf course, but have limited storage space in their car or at home.

The new folding mechanism on the trolley is clever as it keeps all the moving parts inside the tubing and away from trouble, so it is well protected and should last a long time. This also makes it easier to set up.

The new straps are a huge improvement on the Stewart Z3 trolley and ensure that it’s the perfect fit for any bag.

Most importantly for a golfer, it’s very easy to push around the course.

However, there is always something that manages to concern golfers. Many prefer a handbrake to a footbrake. The designers decided not to go with a handle break as they become slacker quicker due to extra wiring.

Overall our verdict is that it is a great choice for those after a high quality model and most importantly it is a trolley you can strut around with pride.

The new folding mechanism should ensure that the trolley lasts for a long time, as there’s very little that can go wrong. The folding and unfolding mechanism is both quick and easy. The compact size when folded is particularly impressive when you consider the size of the unit when it is ready for play and the storage space available. A well thought out trolley that should be very high on your list if you want a high quality push design. While the folded size of the new R1 Push is 33% smaller than the outgoing Z3, the console of the machine has 4 times more volume and more features than its predecessor.

Specially designed self adjusting bag jaws are designed to accommodate any style of stand, cart or tour bag, and an innovative new silicone bag strap both adjusts to bag size and grips at the same time.

The folding system for the all-new R1 Push is based on a sturdy rack & pinion system, the first of its kind in the golf industry.

The patent-pending design hides the folding mechanism within the bespoke aluminium alloy frame, dispensing with any external sliding or tensioning parts.

The result is a very clean aesthetic with a single strong key line running right through the machine.

Every component on the R1 Push has been specifically designed for the new product, making the trolley truly unique.

In addition, the R1 Push will be hand built in Great Britain, in a new facility close to the factory where the company’s premium X & F Series powered products are made.

The R1 Push is available with either black or white wheels, and a black or white frame. Its current retail price is £199.

Key technology

Designed to prevent the twisting of the spine caused by a pull trolley. New features include a repositioned foot brake that presses on and off, and jaws designed to hold all bag sizes.

The Stewart Golf F1 Lithium trolley is 40% smaller when folded than its excellent X3R predecessor. The golf bag is an integral part of the trolley's design and locks to the chassis. The new improved lithium-ion battery is 80% lighter than before.
