PowaKaddy’s top-of-the-range electric trolley for 2020 has undergone a significant makeover, all designed to make it easier to use and more beneficial to the golfer. You can read more about the design updates here.

It starts with the assembly process, which has become much quicker thanks to the new frame design, which is sleeker, more modern and streamlined. The FX7 GPS can genuinely be put up from folded with ease in under three seconds. With one click, the two moving parts fold/unfold together and secure in place automatically. A big improvement.

Admittedly, the FX7 GPS doesn't fold down overly small for storage and transport, but PowaKaddy offers the CT6 GPS for golfers that want GPS functionality on a compact-folding trolley.

Ease of use has also been stepped up with the new battery design. The previous version on the FW7s GPS was sometimes difficult to remove, especially in cold weather, while the on/off switch on the underside was both confusing and inconvenient. Now, the on/off button is larger and displayed on top, making it much easier to access and the larger removal latch makes it stress-free to take out.

You can also keep it in place when folded down and the fact it slots in seamlessly without any cables definitely removes unnecessary faff. You do need to remember to turn the battery on when charging though.

Once set up, the trolley detects the course you’re on quickly and displays all the relevant info clearly. Other than remembering the tap the screen twice to access the features, it couldn’t be simpler. The screen is now larger, easier to read in different light conditions and houses lots of useful features. The front, middle and back distances proved to be generally accurate overall and updated quickly.

Hazard info is available with the double tap of a corner on the screen, although once again it would be nice to have two numbers showing distances to reach and clear them. You can even input your score and measure your shots.

The fixed ring around the main button stops you from knocking it accidentally very well. There are a lot of speed settings inbetween the nine shown, so it takes a longer turn of the dial to move up or down significantly, but this allows it to better match your walking pace.

The light-coloured handle does show dirt up more than if it was black and you have to use a separate tool (provided) to adjust the handle height, although you only need to do this once. Once familiar with how it works, the FX7 GPS was an absolute joy to use.

PowaKaddy Compact C2i GPS Electric Trolley Review

The Compact C2i GPS is the second electric trolley from PowaKaddy to offer integrated GPS capability, following on from the FW7s GPS model. Read more about the technology here.

It shares the same frame design as the Compact C2i, which ensures the trolley takes up minimal space when stored at home or in transit when folded down and can be erected quickly in a couple of simple moves.

With practice, the assembly process is simple to execute – the yellow sections the trolley show which parts need to be pressed or unclipped and while they are a touch fiddly at first, it comes with a handy instruction card to help grasp the process.

It’s also lightweight and easy to carry thanks to the integrated handle.

The other thing you might need to do before you take it for its first spin is adjust the handle height. There are three options and should you need to deviate from the middle that comes preloaded, you will need a screwdriver. It is a little fiddly to carry out, but will certainly be worth it and you only need to do it once.

On the course, it only takes a few quick steps to go through the settings and select your course from the list to get the GPS distances to appear. You can change holes manually using the smaller grey buttons either side of the main shiny button but we found they advanced automatically most of the time.

Press and hold the right button and you’ll see hazard information in a list view, featuring either sand or water icons.

This certainly comes in handy when plotting strategy and club selection for the upcoming shot, although the distances are only to reach the hazards, not carry them. Also, if there are hazards left and right a similar distance away, it isn’t obvious which hazard the numbers are referring to.

That said, the front, middle and back distances are accurate, quick to update and surprisingly easy to read on the display, even in bright sunlight, which was a minor complaint of the FW7s GPS.

You've got lots of other useful information displayed too, like the hole number and par, your current speed selected as well as a battery meter and trip distance.

We tested it alongside the SkyCaddie SX500, regarded as one of the best handheld GPSs on the market, and the distances were always within one or two yards – they were often exactly the same – which was very reassuring.

The handle unit itself has lots of useful features, like a compartment that holds two balls as well as tee and pencil holders.

The Compact C2i GPS doesn’t have the level of features of the FW7s GPS, which has a scorecard and shot measurement function, but the screen is a lot clearer despite being a little smaller.

Also impressive was the battery life. After 18 holes around our relatively flat course, the 18-hole battery still had just under half a tank of juice left. The battery itself is light, easy to slot in on arrival to the course and can be left in situ when folding the trolley down.

You do need to turn it off or turn the speed down to zero beforehand to make sure you don’t accidentally knock of the main button and leave you flustered and embarrassed in the golf club car park trying to stop the spinning wheels.

Golfers will also appreciate the more seamless course updating system via the PowaKaddy app and also how quiet and smooth the trolley is. It really does require minimal effort and you haven’t got to worry about putting off your playing partners while in motion.

Your course is automatically detected and on the 2.8” full colour widescreen display, the front, middle and back distances are shown along with the battery level, time, hole number and its par, current speed and the total distance traveled.

Many features of the previous Compact C2i carry over, like the ball and tee holders on the console, the height adjustable handle and the simple two-step folding mechanism. But new to the GPS version is a Bluetooth connection to the PowaKaddy app that allows for quicker, more seamless golf course updates.

This electric trolley is aimed at golfers who are short on space but still want a feature-packed and reliable electric trolley.

Key technology PowaKaddy’s Simple-2-Fold mechanism means the Compact C2i can be set up and packed away in two simple folds. New for 2018 is a 2.8” mid-size full-colour widescreen. It also includes a USB charging port and a soft-touch handle, which can adjust to three different heights, and an integrated carry handle for easier transportation.

Assembly With a few moving parts, it takes time to master the assembly process but, with practice, it can be erected in a matter of seconds and folded down with the battery still in situ, saving time when taking it home from the course after the round.

Features The compact size when folded is its main sell, but the Automatic Distance Control and battery meter displayed on the snazzy colour screen are useful additions, as are the tee, ball and pencil holders.

Performance The Compact C2i saves a significant amount of space at home and in transit to and from the course. The assembly process is made easier by the parts you need to unclip being yellow; the order in which they work soon becomes second nature. The Plug ‘n’ Play battery is lightweight, slides in easily and can last 36 holes on flat courses with a relatively light bag. Having to adjust the handle height with a screwdriver is a bit of an inconvenience, but for taller golfers it is worth doing.

The colour screen is cutting edge and easy to read in different light conditions, while the handle features are practical and allow all your golfing paraphernalia that you need during a round to be stored in one place.

Key technology

GPS technology is built in to the handle’s intelligent, 3.5” digital screen. It delivering front, middle and back distances on over 35,000 golf courses worldwide as well as distances to hazards without the need to use an external device. There’s also a built-in scorecard, USB charging port, calorie counter and adjustable distance control function.

The FW7s GPS saves every round you enter to build a performance history and even reacts to your final score by displaying different emojis. PowaKaddy’s Plug’n’Play avoids any fiddly wires or connectors and is one of the lightest and thinnest on the market.

How we tested

We gave the FW7s GPS a run out over the PGA National course at the Belfry having been clued up on all the features and how to access and use them.

Features

The GPS distances were quick to update in open areas and stacked up against on-course markers. They were a little slower to do so in wooded areas. The hazard info proved useful, as did the on-board scorecard and shot measurement feature.

Ease of Use

Once you’ve entered your details and chosen settings, it only takes a few seconds to get going. Some of the features requires different button presses and combinations, so be sure to read the instruction manual before using it for the first time.

The hazard info at the touch of a button helps plan your strategy, although it can be confusing if there are hazards a similar distance away on both sides of the fairway or green as the display doesn’t specify which is left or right. While the screen is large, it wasn’t as easy to read as it could have been in bright sunlight, although most of the time it was fine and it’s large size made viewing the information and entering your score much easier.

How we tested

We took the Compact C2 to the undulating London Club and tested it over 18 holes on the Heritage course, assessing the ease of assembly and use, the features on offer and general performance.

GM Review

Assembly It will take you a few attempts to master the assembly process, but once you’re familiar with it you should be able to erect and dismantle the trolley in 3-4 seconds.

Features We feel like there’s an appropriate amount of features on offer for most golfers. The three adjustable handle heights and USB Port will be very well received by both taller and shorter golfers.

Styling The soft-touch, double-ended handle enhances the control you have, assisted by the smart low-profile wheels and sleek frame.

Performance summary The Compact C2 completes a comprehensive 2017 range from PowaKaddy, which now includes a cutting-edge GPS model. Those short on space either in the car or at home will welcome its design as well as how light it is, making transportation simple.

The folding mechanism shouldn’t put you off as it’s quick to grasp while the screen display, which is the same as the new FW5i model, offers all relevant information in a format that’s easy to digest. Being able to keep the slim line lithium battery in place when folded reduces faffing in the car park after a round and the ball and tee holders top off what is a sufficient list of useful features.

The true test of the battery will come years down the line, but the Plug N Play batteries have always run beyond our expectations. What you will also notice straight away is how smooth and quiet the trolley is over the terrain - there is little to distract playing partners or those on adjacent fairways when walking to your next shot.

Looks The FW7s is a stunning piece of modern-day kit from every angle. The graphics and colours give it a cutting-edge look and feel while the colour screen enhances this further.

Performance If you enjoy using a variety of features during a round, this is the model for you and they’re easy to navigate. Getting it in and out of your car isn’t a problem thanks to it being surprisingly lightweight and relatively compact when folded down. The assembly process is incredibly simple, clicking into place in just two swift movements, and the lightweight and compact Plug ‘n’ Play lithium battery slides in effortlessly.

We were impressed with how long the lithium battery lasts – after one round from a full charge the meter had barely moved and we’re confident you’d get 36 holes from one charge on a relatively flat course. It feels sturdy and stable, which improves with the key lock base on PowaKaddy’s own cart bags. Chassis and Frame The chassis is made from a strong and lightweight engineering polymer, which makes it robust but easy to lift in and out of your car even with the battery connected. It is quick and simple to assemble and fold down thanks to its three-way folding mechanism, which is very user friendly and intuitive to grasp at the first attempt.

Operation Once turned on via a button underneath the control unit, a circular red LED light will flash on the display. Gently push the handle as you start walking, the console will slide in and the light will change to green. The further inwards you push the handle, the faster the trolley will move, matching your walking pace. As you slow down, the control unit will slide back out naturally, slowing the trolley in unison. To stop, you simply hold the handle and stop walking.

Steering This works in the same way as a normal electric trolley by twisting the direction with your hands. Be sure to remember to put the trolley in stand by mode using the button when stationary to eliminate the fear of bumping the handle with your hip and setting it off inadvertently.

Features The touch control method is the trolley’s stand out feature but there is also a USB charging port for you to connect your smartphone or GPS device. Accessories like a GPS cradle or umbrella holder (sold separately) can be attached to the frame. The key lock base on PowaKaddy’s cart bag range eliminate any unwanted movement but standbags from any brand are secured well enough via the elasticated straps.

Ease of use This is one of the quickest and simplest trolleys to get going once you arrive in the car park. It takes time to adjust to the control system and how it differs to a conventional electric trolley, which will resume at the speed it was set to previously. But once you learn to be gentle when pushing the handle initially to resume walking after playing a shot. Once you’ve found your ideal walking pace, you can take your hand off and it will continue at the same speed.

Control The ambidextrous handle makes it just as easy to maneuver as a conventional electric trolley. Going down hills the movement can become a little jolty as the trolley adjusts to your new step pattern but providing you don’t tug or push forcefully on the control unit, you shouldn’t be inconvenienced.

New Powakaddy Freeway electric trolleys

Keen to build on the success of its Freeway trolley range in 2016, PowaKaddy has unveiled a raft of updates to its FW3, FW5, FW7 and FW7 EBS models.

Each can now boast new low-profile wheels and chassis, new graphics on the three-way folding frames and, in the case of the flagship FW7, several never-seen-before features and a sporty new appearance that mean it has become the FW7S.

“We understand that golfers are always looking for extra in terms of performance, style and value – and ultimately we think the new line-up delivers on all those fronts,” David Catford, PowaKaddy CEO, told GM.

As with the original Freeway iterations, a thin lithium battery attaches via Plug ‘n’ Play technology, which removes the need for fiddly wires, a design that has played a significant part in propelling lithium sales above lead-acid batteries for the first time last year.

Depending on the battery selected, the FW7S will retail from £429.99 (standard battery) to £629.99 (extended range lithium battery), while the FW7S EBS ranges from £479.99 (standard lithium battery), to £679.99 (extended range lithium battery).

The FW5 model has also undergone a makeover that includes its wheels (above), yellow accent trims and a new Rear Diffuser that enhances the look, costing from £349.99 (standard battery) to £549.99 (extended range lithium battery).

Finally the entry-level FW3 (above) joins the range in a wheel upgrade, while enhanced trim effects and stylish tube graphics provide another addition from £299.99 (standard battery) to £499.99 (extended lithium battery).

The new Plug ‘n’ Play battery system is a brilliant addition to all of the new PowaKaddy electric models. It means the battery slides into place without the need for wires, whether you’re using a Lead-acid or Lithium option. As well as being lightweight and quiet the Litium battery goes up hills without any issues. A new modern frame design is combined with a low-profile chassis and wheels, giving a futuristic look that is stylish and modern out on the course. Then FW3 is easy to put up and down and is very stable on hilly ground.

The PowaKaddy FW3 is a fantastic option if you want a modern trolley that will do its main job well. If £450 is the top of your budget, and you won’t use the added extras on other models, then an FW3 with a Lithium battery is money well spent. Don't expect a screen with lots of information on or added extras, but the PowaKaddy FW3 does its primary job well. It's a choice if you haven't used an electric trolley before and want a simple design that works well.

The PowaKaddy FW3 offers  lot of trolley for the price. The simplicity and stripped back design will be a positive for some but a weakness for others. The Lithium option is well worth the long-term investment.

Pros:

Although the last PowaKaddy range was solid, it was a little uninspiring. However, the new FW products offer much more in terms of performance and visual appeal. Both the Lead-Acid and Lithium batteries are now more user-friendly and stylish. The Lithium battery tested did a good job of coping with hilly ground. The sleek frame on the FW7 is stable and easy to steer, while the screen and handle design is smarter, and the power control is now suitable for right and left-handed golfers

Cons:

If you don’t feel you’ll get the use out of the added extras on the FW7, the cheaper FW5 and FW3 models may suit. The FW3 with a Lithium battery, for example, is a great-looking trolley at an affordable price.

Verdict:

The PowaKaddy FW7 trolley was very easy to use and control. The Lithium Plug ‘n’ Play battery was effortless to install, and once the trolley was assembled, its new digital screen was clear and precise. The ability to charge a GPS device is also a welcome addition if you’re someone who uses a GPS. If the reliability is as good as the trolley, then PowaKaddy has a winner.

The wheels – endorsed by the British and International Golf Greenkeepers’ Association – ensure minimal ground contact, thereby protecting often sodden winter courses from damage.

A multifunctional control panel is combined with a new LCD display, which gives the distance of each shot hit, distance walked and battery power, all of which can be turned off. The PowaKaddy Freeway II trolley has nine different speed settings and can be sent ten, 20 or 30 yards before stopping automatically. Available with an 18-hole Lithium battery that is 75% lighter than standard.

The chassis in the PowaKaddy Freeway trolley is made from a light and strong alloy of aluminium, magnesium, silicon and titanium. When folded it is one of the smallest electric trolleys around. Fitted with quick-release sport wheels.   

The PowaKaddy Twinline 3 trolley features a telescopic handle means the height can be adjusted to suit every golfer. A unique parking brake means that the three-wheel design can be left on any slope. It is lightweight and can be easily folded for transport or storage.
