There was an unusual moment during the final round of the 3M Open involving Lucas Glover, where he appeared to protest a green-reading method he’s known to dislike, AimPoint, before clarifying his actions later on.

Glover made a birdie putt at the 10th to move to six under at TPC Twin Cities, but it didn’t seem to do much for his mood, with the six-time PGA Tour winner immediately walking away from the hole and close to where playing partner Max Greyserman was standing.

There, he removed his shoes and placed them on the ground before striding back and picking his ball out of the cup.

His actions appeared to have been directed at AimPoint, with Greyserman, who uses the method, potentially the player his protest was directed towards.

The method is used by several PGA Tour players and involves reading the upcoming putt via the use of your feet.

Essentially, golfers stand facing the hole and estimate the severity of the putt on a scale between 0 and 6, which then helps them pick out a starting line.

However, it’s safe to say we won’t be seeing Lucas Glover employing AimPoint any time soon.

The 2009 US Open champion voiced his distaste for the method on SiriusXM PGA Tour Radio last year, claiming that it not only does not help players make more putts, but is also "kind of rude to be up near the hole and stomping around, figuring out where the break is in your feet." He added: "It needs to be banned. It takes forever."

Glover making a protest against AimPoint was the consensus on the Golf Channel’s broadcast, but was his move really about that bugbear, or something else?

Following his round, where he finished on five under for the tournament, Glover responded to an Instagram post from Flushing It Golf, where he claimed it had “nothing to do with AimPoint, actually.”

He then detailed the real cause of his protest, writing that it was about “complaints behind me about spike marks. I wear metal. Someone in the group ahead of us was too. Singled me out. Just goofing off.”

Even with Glover’s clarification, his actions brought the potential pros and cons of AimPoint back into the conversation.

One thing for sure is it's far from unpopular with some other pros, with players aside from Greyserman who have used it including Adam Scott, Keegan Bradley, Viktor Hovland, Justin Thomas and Max Homa.

In fact, according to Europe's Senior AimPoint Instructor, Jamie Donaldson, the system is now used by 65 percent of players on the PGA Tour, suggesting we could see it on the circuit for some time to come.

The 2026 Rocket Classic will be the final edition under its current name, with the news in June that title sponsor Rocket Companies is pulling out of the event to end a 13-year run with the PGA Tour.

However, it looks set for a fitting send-off, with the field for the final edition of the event in its current guise at Detroit Golf Club set to be strong.

A year ago, Aldrich Potgieter claimed his maiden PGA Tour win at the event. He defends his title, but he is highly unlikely to have it all his own way given the caliber of stars elsewhere in the field.

Four players in the world’s top 10 will head to Detroit for the tournament, the highest-ranked of whom is World No.3 Cameron Young.

He will make his first start at the event since finishing runner-up to Ryan Fox at The Open, with the American looking for his third victory of the year.

Russell Henley, who won the Charles Schwab Challenge in May, also appears, along with the player ranked seventh in the world, Chris Gotterup, who has three victories this year, the most recent of which came at the John Deere Classic.

The other player in the world’s top 10 is the player ranked ninth, US Open champion Wyndham Clark.

They are far from the only big names in the field for the event, which is the penultimate of the regular PGA Tour season before the FedEx Cup Playoffs.

The man Clark succeeded as US Open champion, JJ Spaun, also plays, looking for his second win of the season after taking the Valero Texas Open title in April.

Two-time Major winner Xander Schauffele also plays, along with a player who has been in good form for much of the season, Si Woo Kim, who led in the final round of The Open before finishing T6.

Other big names to look out for include Ben Griffin, who won three PGA Tour events in 2025, 2021 Masters champion Hideki Matsuyama, Genesis Invitational winner Jacob Bridgeman and Arnold Palmer Invitational champion Akshay Bhatia.

The likes of Patrick Cantlay, Harris English, Maverick McNealy, Keegan Bradley and Jake Knapp add to the quality who will be teeing it up at the tournament.

Aside from Potgieter, other former winners of the event in the field include 2024 champion Cameron Davis, Rickie Fowler, who collected his sixth PGA Tour win in Detroit in 2023, and Tony Finau, who claimed the title four years ago.

Scheffler plays the PGA Tour event for the first time as he looks to make up for the disappointment of falling just short of claiming back-to-back Claret Jugs at The Open Championship.

The American ended the final Major of 2026 three shots behind New Zealander Ryan Fox, who has opted to sit out this event after his success at Royal Birkdale.

In the US this week, TV coverage for the 3M Open is spread across the Golf Channel and CBS.

Low scores have traditionally been common at TPC Twin Cities, with all seven previous winners of the 3M Open finishing the weekend 15 under par or better. Lee Hodges holds the record for the lowest score at this tournament, carding 24-under to claim the title in 2023.

Hodges is one of four past winners teeing off this week, alongside last year's champion Kurt Kitayama, 2022 victor Tony Finau and Cameron Champ, who took the spoils in 2021.

However, all eyes will be on Scottie Scheffler, who is the hot favorite to claim the title on his first appearance. The world No.1 has finished in the top 15 in nine of his past 10 events, with the only blemish on that record a shock failure to make the cut at the Scottish Open earlier this month.

Jordan Spieth will also play at TPC Twin Cities for the first time and needs a strong performance after falling out of the top 50 in both the FedExCup standings and the world rankings. The American is a 13-time winner on the PGA Tour, but the last of those came back in 2022 at the RBC Heritage.

With the FedExCup play-offs fast approaching, there is plenty at stake in Blaine and it should make for a fascinating four days of PGA Tour action.

Jordan Spieth was a surprise name in the field for the 3M Open when he was announced just a couple of weeks before the tournament with a big fanfare, so his withdrawal was as surprising as it was disappointing for organisers.

Spieth was announced as the other big name in the field at TPC Twin Cities alongside Scottie Scheffler, but when the field list was published last Friday Spieth's name was not on it.

The 3M Open has had a few withdrawals with Jason Day injured and Open champion Ryan Fox taking the week off, while headliner Spieth's absence was the biggest blow.

And World No.1 Scheffler, a good friend who lives near him in Texas, says the reason for Spieth now skipping the trip to Minnesota is the mental grind of his struggling form.

Spieth is down in 55th in the FedEx Cup standings, just outside the crucial top 50, after a bitterly disappointing Open Championship - where he missed the cut after shooting 10 over par for the first two days on his return to Royal Birkdale.

And Scheffler says that the mental aspect of Spieth struggling to find any form has taken its toll, meaning he just needed a week off before trying to make a late run for the playoffs.

"I haven't spoken to him since after The Open, but Jordan's played a lot of tournaments this year, a lot more I think than maybe he normally has," Scheffler said at TPC Twin Cities.

"Golf is tough in terms of I think mentally it's more of a grind than anything. Physically it can wear you down as well, but mentally it can be challenging just from I think just the grind it is in order to play a tournament.

"He's played a lot of tournaments this year, so from my point of view it's understanding for him to maybe need a week off especially as he tries to grind and make his way into the top-50 to get back into the bigger events next year."

Spieth's first target is to remain in the top 70 in the FedEx Cup standings in order to make the first playoff event - the FedEx St Jude Championship - with just two tournaments remaining after the 3M Open.

Only the Rocket Classic and Wyndham Championship now remain for Spieth to rescue a season of frustration, he feels his best stuff is close but he's failed to even land a single top 10 this year.

The frustration is obvious, and Scheffler knows about it firsthand as he practices with Spieth back in Texas, and sees how hard he's been working behind the scenes.

"We play a lot of golf at home and he works super, super hard," said Scheffler. "I'm sure he's bummed not to be here this week, but like I said, he's worked really hard this season and played a lot of tournaments.

"So I'm sure he wishes he could be here, but rest and time at home is also important as you try and play good golf."

Spieth faces a fight to try and make the top 50 in the FedEx Cup, which brings with it access to all the big events on a changing PGA Tour next season - but his puzzling continued struggles don't show too many signs of improving.

After the saga and the drama of the Open Championship it's back to regular PGA Tour action at the 3M Open in Minnesota.

It's a relatively new event at TPC Twin Cities with just seven previous events and some decent low scoring - Kurt Kitayama shoot 60 last year along the way to winning on 23 under.

Adam Svensson also stuck in a 60 last year while Lee Hodges shot 24 under to win in 2023, but although low scores are out there it's not always a full-on birdie fest as Cameron Champ won on 15 under while Jhonattan Vegas and Tony Finau both hit 17 under in their victories.

Scottie Scheffler is making his tournament debut as the red-hot favorite, with the bookies seeing this as a gimme for the World No.1 as the runaway +250 (5/2) market leader.

Scheffler should stroll to victory

Scheffler will see this as a fantastic opportunity to grab his first win since January - coming off a fourth place at Royal Birkdale when only the putter let him down.

Trends at the 3M Open point to driving accuracy and also more importantly approach play being key for success, and Scheffler's not only head and shoulders above the rest of this field but also the best in the world with an iron in hand.

Scheffler missed his first cut in four years in Scotland and has to make the trans-Atlantic trip back from The Open after a frustrating Sunday, but they're not big enough negatives to suggest he won't stroll to victory a week later.

Scheffler leads the PGA Tour in Strokes Gained with 2.154, the next best in this week's field is Jake Knapp in 20th with 0.903, while the next highest in the FedEx Cup behind leader Scheffler is Gary Woodland in 29th and Hideki Matsuyama down at 30th is the highest ranked player in the OWGR besides the World No.1.

There's a gulf in class and form in this field that you rarely see on the PGA Tour. Annything can happen in a golf tournament and his odds are crazily short, but it's not often you say a player should, not could, win on the PGA Tour. This is one of those weeks.

Back Scottie Scheffler to win the 3M Open at +250 (5/2) with BetMGM

You've got options this week as with Scheffler being such a hot favorite you could take him out of the equation and use the winner without Scottie Scheffler market, or just take your chances in the regular market and hope for some eacy-way money if the favorite does indeed romp home.

So who else could make the frame, or even shock Scheffler?

Pick One: Jake Knapp +4000

Hideki Matsuyama had top-20 finishes at The Open and Scottish Open and was seventh on his debut here in 2019 so has to be on the shortlist alongside Sungjae Im, who is also a flusher, tied for 14th at Birkdale and has a runner-up finish at this event in 2022.

But preference here goes to Jake Knapp despite his results recently being the worst of this bunch, with three missed cuts in four starts as he returns from a thumb injury.

He missed the cut at the Scottish Open and The Open but gained strokes on approach in both - only just at Birkdale but his ball striking was great up in Scotland.

Knapp was third at the 3M Open last year so knows how to avoid the vast array of water hazards on the course, and when and where to use his length off the tee - while he's shot 59 at PGA National which many put up as a closely comparable course to TPC Twin Cities.

Missing the weekend at The Open was a blow, but Knapp had extra time to return to the United States and could be one of those happy to get back home rather than sorry to leave the links behind.

Even with Scheffler in the field he should have a chance.

Pick Two: Corey Conners +5000

Corey Conners is coming off 14th at The Open and is as good a ball striker as you'll get, so if his putter is hot here he will surely go close.

He put up his third-best Strokes Gained numbers in both approach and putting in the final round at Birkdale, so that's great momentum to return back across the Atlantic with.

Conners was seventh on his last start in the USA at the Travelers so has plenty of positives, and in a field not exactly filled with star names and multiple winners behind Scheffler, there aren't many with as much class as the Canadian.

He'd get a pick anyway but Conners is also in the final automatic spot for the Presidents Cup so will want to ensure he gets into the International Team by right.

Back Corey Conners +5000 (50/1) with BetMGM

Pick Three: Ben Kohles +6600

With plenty of players jetting in from the UK, Kohles had the week off last week after a fine spell where he won on the Korn Ferry Tour and finished no lower than 29th in six starts. He also should've won the John Deere Classic but for an error on the final hole.

Three of the last six winners of the 3M Open arrived after a top 20 at TPC Deere Run, while Kohles' superb iron play recenting (SG: Approach 35.11 across last 10 starts) suits the task in hand in Minnesota.

He's finished 20-24 in the last two years at TPC Twin Cities and if there's any jet leg, links fatigue or just plain old tiredness in the rest of the field, a well-rested and in-form Kohles can take advantage.

As always, the Golf Monthly Tour Issue Podcast team made their PGA Tour picks for the PGA Tour this week as part of their Tipster's Challenge segment.

Ryan Fox achieved golf immortality by winning The Open at Royal Birkdale on Sunday, holing a 72nd-hole birdie at Royal Birkdale for his maiden Major title

Perhaps unsurprisingly given the physical and emotional toil of the occasion, which took place in wall-to-wall sunshine throughout, the popular New Zealander has withdrawn from this week’s PGA Tour event, the 3M Open.

Playing in the Minnesota tournament would have meant a quick turnaround for Fox, with the first round beginning just four days after Sunday's final round at The Open.

However, instead Fox is taking a well-earned break as the reality of becoming the Champion Golfer of the Year sinks in.

Following his victory, which also made him just the fourth New Zealander to win a Major after Bob Charles, Michael Campbell and Lydia Ko, described the feeling of winning.

He said: "Surreal, to be honest. It's something you dream of. I used to get up in the middle of the night to watch this tournament back home.

"It was always something that was there just to be able to play in it, first up, and now to be an Open champion, to be the Champion Golfer of the Year, it's unbelievable, surreal, crazy. I don't have enough words in my vocabulary to explain it, to be honest."

Fox’s withdrawal opens the door for two-time PGA Tour winner Fabian Gomez to take his place at the TPC Twin Cities. He finished T42 at the PGA Tour’s Corales Puntacana Championship, which was played at the same time as The Open.

The Claret Jug winner isn’t the only player from The Open to withdraw from the event. Eric Cole, who tied for 53rd at Royal Birkdale following a final round of 75, also withdrew on Sunday, with Charley Hoffman taking his place in the 144-player field.

Chan Kim withdrew on Saturday, with Henrik Norlander his replacement.

While the withdrawals will be a blow to the tournament organizers, there is still some serious star quality in the field, not least the player at the top of the world rankings, Scottie Scheffler.

The American, who placed T4 at Royal Birkdale in the defence of his title, normally takes some time away from competitive action following The Open to prepare for the FedEx Cup Playoffs.

However, his surprising inclusion in the 3M Open field was confirmed in May, when he told the tournament’s official website: “I'm looking forward to playing the 3M Open for the first time.

"I've heard great things about the event and I'm excited to get to Minnesota and compete at TPC Twin Cities."

Defending champion Kurt Kitayama also plays, while another big name in the field is 2021 Masters champion Hideki Matsuyama.

On paper, professional golfers have the best job in the world. Not only are they playing golf for a living, but the best courses in the best conditions.

However, the stress of professional sport can be a severe one, as proven by Aaron Wise, who has had his ups-and-downs during his playing career.

At the age of 21, he was a PGA Tour winner and Rookie of the Year... five years later, he was forced to withdraw from The Masters due to problems with his mental health.

Now though, after limited starts since returning to the circuit, he finds himself in contention at the ISCO Championship, with the American opening up about his issues off the course.

Carding back-to-back rounds of 65 to sit 10-under at the halfway stage, just three back of leader Lucas Glover, Wise stated: "It's been a long journey back and there's been a lot of learning, a lot of growing and a lot of hard work.

"Last week (at the John Deere Classic) was a great step to be in contention. I think Gotterup won in the group ahead of me and the guy in the group behind me finished second, so I felt like I was in that one, too.

"This is just more good golf and another chance to be there on the weekend and learn from it and grow."

Withdrawing from The Masters in 2023, Wise returned in May of that year, featuring in just four more tournaments, missing the cut in all but one.

In 2024, he played just one PGA Tour event, the Puerto Rico Open, while he split his time between the PGA Tour and Korn Ferry Tour in 2025, registering a best finish of T39th at the Tulum Championship on the latter circuit.

Revealing that it wasn't "just losing the joy of practicing," that was affecting Wise, he even stated that "I didn't even want to go have dinner with friends. Like I was in a really, really bad place."

He went on to add: "(I) Kind of built that back up first, got to feeling like myself off the golf course and started introducing golf again.

"For a while it was tough because I just wasn't very good after taking all that time off. Slowly kind of got that fire back.

"In the beginning, practicing felt like a chore to do. I wasn't so much enjoying it because I wasn't very good.

"It just felt like a lot of work after taking some time off, but now I feel like I'm in a spot where I am enjoying the challenge and enjoying the different days you get out here. Like not every day's the same. Like I said, yesterday I hit it great, today I hit it bad.

"I enjoy going and figuring that out now and trying to have a good weekend.

"People have really understood and been understanding of what I'm going through and very supportive of me getting back.

"I can't thank all the fans enough for being that way because it would be easy to be a different way, but I really appreciate them taking it that way."

World Cup fever is everywhere right now, but what about if it was brought back to golf? Which country would have the best team to take on the world and win?

We did have a World Cup of Golf of course, which has a long and storied history almost as much as the FIFA World Cup equivalent - with it first played as the Canada Cup way back in 1953.

It switched to the World Cup in 1967 and ran all the way until 2018, with some of the biggest names in golf competing in and winning it including two almost unstoppable teams from the USA.

Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus won it together four times in five years, while Davis Love III and Fred Couples won it four years in a row and both Tiger Woods and Seve Ballesteros won it two years running with different partners.

It's been played right across the globe too, so with the ever-shifting landscape in golf right now, surely it's time to bring back the World Cup of Golf?

Why bring back the World Cup of Golf?

Whether you like it or not, what LIV Golf has done is show the thirst for top quality golf around the world - Australia and South Africa stand out as two huge events that were put on in the team golf league.

And yes Bryson DeChambeau and Jon Rahm were headline acts, but team wise having Australian and South African teams proved hugely popular, so wouldn't a World Cup work just as well?

Maybe that's something for LIV to think about for the future?

The PGA Tour and DP World Tour are investing in the Australian Open as well, so global golf is at least on the radar.

Of course, money is the issue. LIV Golf offered huge sums to get players outside of their American comfort zone, while schedule is another concern but with the PGA Tour shortening the calendar there is a clear gap after the big DP World Tour finish.

Format can be whatever you like, from the two-player teams we've seen previously to teams of four as used in LIV, and throw in a mix of the best men and women golfers on the planet then at least in theory it looks a worthwhile endeavour.

So for our purposes here we'll look at how strong a squad each country could build, as well as their top stars, and how they'd stack up overall in a mixed event.

USA

• Starters: Scottie Scheffler, Bryson DeChambeau, Nelly Korda
• Squad: Angel Yin, Xander Schauffele, Cameron Young, Russell Henley

One of the obvious top dogs would of course be the United States, who still dominate the world rankings, recent Major victories and have World No.1 Scottie Scheffler in their ranks.

Bryson DeChambeau would be right up there too as a pick despite his recent Major struggles, while Nelly Korda has been dominant in the women's game but also has plenty of depth behind her.

Recent Ryder Cups have shown that the United States can sometimes struggle in team tournaments especially on foreign soil though.

England

• Starters: Matt Fitzpatrick, Tommy Fleetwood, Charley Hull
• Squad: Justin Rose, Tyrrell Hatton, Aaron Rai, Alex Fitzpatrick, Marco Penge, Georgia Hall, Lottie Woad

English golf has arguably never been stronger, and you'd have to fancy them to go deep in a golf World Cup as they have big players in both the men's and women's game.

Three men in the top 10 in the world makes for a tough pick if only three starters but the squad is stacked, and even deeper down there's new Major champion Aaron Rai and Alex Fitzpatrick - one of the hottest players on the PGA Tour.

Charley Hull is about as good as it gets in the women's game and having Lottie Woad there is a stellar bench.

Ireland

• Starters: Rory McIlroy Shane Lowry, Leona Maguire
• Squad: Tom McKibbin, Stephanie Meadow, Graeme McDowell, Padraig Harrington

Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland play separately in football terms, but in the World Cup of Golf it's a united Ireland, meaning Rory McIlroy can partner with his big mate Shane Lowry.

Leona Maguire is as tough as they come in matchplay so would be a brilliant female member of the team, while there's a good mix of youth and experience on the bench thanks to Tom McKibbin and Padraig Harrington.

Spain

• Starters: Jon Rahm, Eugenio Chacarra, Carlota Ciganda
• Squad: David Puig, Sergio Garcia, Jose Luis Ballester, Angel Ayora, Julia Lopez Ramirez

Anyone with Jon Rahm in the team will have a fighting chance, but he also has a pretty strong back-up and a squad packed with young guns who could all go on to have huge careers.

Eugenio Chacarra is ripping it up on the DP World Tour while Sergio Garcia is mentoring David Puig and Jose Luis Ballester on LIV Golf. And anyone would want Solheim Cup star Carlota Ciganda on their side.

Australia

• Starters: Cameron Smith, Jason Day, Minjee Lee
• Squad: Min Woo Lee, Adam Scott, Marc Leishman, Hannah Green, Grace Kim

Three-time Major winner Minjee Lee is a match for anyone in the women's game, and she'd be a star component in what's a pretty tasty Australian squad.

Jason Day and Cameron Smith are both Major champions and as with all Australian teams there'd be no shortage of fighting spirit from this lot. The ageless Adam Scott would be pushing for a place in the starting line-up as a previous World Cup winner alongside Day in 2013.

Only the USA have won more World Cup of golf titles than Australia.

Denmark

• Starters: Rasmus Hojgaard, Nicolai Hojgaard, Emily Pedersen
• Squad: Rasmus Neergaard-Petersen, Frederik Kjettrup, Jacob Skov Olesen, Thomas Bjorn, Nanna Koersta Madsen

The Danes would be serious dark horses in a World Cup, with the Hojgaard brothers leading the charge, although it'd be a tough selection with some strong squad depth.

And if Denmark were in a bit of a fix, maybe they could find a way to get Chris Gotterup to use his Danish heritage to play for them!

Sweden

• Starters: Ludvig Aberg, Alex Noren, Maja Stark
• Squad: Henrik Stenson, Linn Grant, Anna Nordqvist, Madelene Sagstrom

The ice cool Swedes perhaps don't have the strength in depth in the men's game but Ludvig Aberg and Alex Noren aren't a bad starting duo - with last year's US Women's Open champion Maja Stark adding to the line-up.

Henrik Stenson and Anna Nordqvist offer experience in the squad.

Norway

• Starters: Viktor Hovland, Kristofer Reitan, Marianne Skarpnord
• Squad: Kristoffer Ventura, Dorthea Forbrigd, Celine Borge

Another Scandinavian outfit here...

It's a bit too late for Suzann Petersen to be drafted back into action, but she'd make a good manager/captain if they have one in the new World Cup of golf.

Viktor Hovland and Kristofer Reitan are proven big-game players while six-time LET winner Marianne Skarpnord just gets the nod for the female spot.

South Africa

• Starters: Louis Oosthuizen, Dean Burmester, Casandra Alexander
• Squad: Charles Schwartzel, Branden Grace, Thriston Lawrence, Aldrich Potgieter, Casey Jarvis, Ashleigh Buhai

Louis Oosthuizen can still do a job and lead this talented team of South Africans filled with multiple winners and some big hitters.

Casandra Alexander was prolific on the Sunshine Tour and has a LET win under her belt so offers strength in the women's game too.

Canada

• Starters: Corey Conners, Nick Taylor, Brooke Henderson
• Squad: Sudarshan Yellamaraju, Taylor Pendrith, Mackenzie Hughes, Adam Hadwin, Anna Huang, Aphrodite Deng

A more than solid line-up for Canada led by Corey Conners, one of the best ball strikers on the entire planet, and two-time Major winner Brooke Henderson bringing the heat from the women's game.

There's some great youth prospects coming through though with Sudersham Yellamaraju making his name on the PGA Tour while teenage prodigies Anna Huang and Aphrodite Deng are growing forces in the women's game.

Japan

• Starters: Hideki Matsuyama, Ryo Hisatsune, Miyu Yamashita
• Squad: Keita Nakajima, Kazuki Higa, Mao Saigo, Nasa Hataoka

A Masters champion leads the way for Japan but their strength in depth comes in the women's game with Major winners and a great crop of up and coming youth talent.

There's not quite the depth in the men's game right now, but Hideki Matsuyama is a great lead-off man and Ryo Hisatsune is no mug either.

Best of the rest

Thomas Detry and Thomas Pieters are actually the reigning World Cup of Golf champions as they won the last renewal of the event in 2018 - so they'd have to be respected.

Abraham Ancer finished runner-up in 2018 and with Carlos Ortiz playing alongside him and Gabby Lopez on the squad then Mexico would be classic dark horse material.

China have Haotong Li and a wealth of women's talent to call upon, while Korea may just have the best squad of the lot here with Sungjae Im and Tom Kim leading the way.

The Koreans also have a vast array of female talent so theyr'e unlucky not to make it into the top bracket of teams really.

Don't rule Robert MacIntyre and the Scots out, and having the Molinari brothers run it back after winning the World Cup back in 2009 would be fun for everyone.

But the point here is that there are so many countries these days able to put top-quality golfing squads together, that the World Cup of Golf would be some spectacle.

Let's hope there's some room for it in the future of the sport.

After 78 events and 1,428 days Scottie Scheffler has finally missed a cut on the PGA Tour - as he won't make the weekend at the Genesis Scottish Open.

It's hardly the ideal preparation for the upcoming Open Championship for the defending champion and World No.1, who will now have to make alternative plans for the weekend ahead of Royal Birkdale.

Scheffler followed an opening round of 68 with a 72 on Friday at the Renaissance Club to finish on level par - just one shot off the projected cut line but down in 91st place on the leaderboard.

That means the longest active streak of cuts made on the PGA Tour comes to an end, with Scheffler missing his first cut since the FedEx St. Jude Championship in August 2022.

Xander Schauffele had the previous longest active streak with 72 straight cuts made until he missed out at Torrey Pines in January this year - 1,391 days after he last failed to make the weekend.

And now Scheffler's own run of 78 made cuts is over, leaving him well short of the PGA Tour record set by Tiger Woods, with a whopping 142 cuts in a row made.

The current longest active streak is now Matt Fitzpatrick with just 28 in a row - showcasing what an achievement it was for Scheffler.

Now Scheffler has to find new plans for the weekend as he looks to defend his Open Championship title at Royal Birkdale next week.

“A little different than I was planning,” Scheffler said about his preparation for The Open after missing the cut in Scotland.

“I’ll figure out how to get down to Birkdale and go from there.”

Scheffler won the Claret Jug at Royal Portrush last year and is still seen as one of the favorites to win at Royal Birkdale, but missing the cut in Scotland is a big blow.

He's currently on his longest winless run for three years, with the Scottish Open his 14th start since his last victory at the American Express at the start of the year.

Scheffler still had four runner-up finishes and arrived in Scotland on the back of a playoff defeat to Viktor Hovland at the Travelers Championship.

But a missed cut throws his prep into disarray, with Scheffler admitting he didn't give himself enough birdie chances with his approach play.

“I got off to a tough start and then on the back nine I didn’t feel like I was hitting it close enough to give myself enough opportunities," said Scheffler.

"I think that’s what it really comes down to. I got off to a poor start and didn’t really hit it close enough to give myself a bunch of looks and that’s how you shoot over par.

“I was just trying to get some looks. I felt like I struck it better on the back nine. Overall, not quite good enough. Like I said, I felt like I was hitting it too far from the hole and wasn’t holing any of those putts."

Scheffler will now head to Birkdale early and have an extended practice run on the Southport links ahead of his Claret Jug defence.

Rory McIlroy insists his new lighter schedule works best for him, and it certainly seemed that way as he returned to action with a round of 65 at the Genesis Scottish Open.

McIlroy took another two weeks off after the US Open and teed it up at the Renaissance Club on Thursday for just his 12th start of the year, and his 10th PGA Tour sanctioned event.

He's continuing his Major plan by playing just once in between golf's big four, preferring instead to prep for those big ones - for example he skipped the PGA Tour events recently to instead practice at Royal Birkdale ahead of The Open.

And it seems to be working just fine for McIlroy, who carded an eagle and five birdies in his five-under round of 65 in his first outing since Shinnecock Hills - to take an early share of the clubhouse lead when he finished up his 18 holes.

McIlroy said after his opening round in Scotland that his new schedule leaves him "feeling like I have a bit more balance in my life" as this looks like being his new long-term plan for his career.

And it doesn't seem to have any negative impact on his game, as despite playing just four events in 12 weeks he sees no sign of rust.

"I mean, I feel like even though I have played pretty sparsely over the last few months, the starts of my tournaments have all been really good so it's not like I'm coming in and starting slow," McIlroy told Sky Sports after his 13th straight round in the 60s at the Scottish Open - where he's 47 under par during that span.

"The little bit of extra practice I think actually helps in some ways.

"And one of the other benefits for me, I'm nearly 20 years into this and I need to do everything I can to keep my enthusiasm as high as possible, and playing a lighter schedule definitely does that."

Will McIlroy focus in Europe more in the future?

McIlroy says it feels "liberating" to have achieved his Grand Slam last year, and now after defending his Masters title he needed to adjust his mindset and set new goals for the future.

"I can't get complacent," he added. "I still need to set goals. To me, I've said this a few times this year, I felt like the Grand Slam last year was the destination, and I realised it wasn't. It a continuous journey.

"It's a journey until you decide one day that you want to step off and do something else, but as long as I'm on this journey, there will always be goals to achieve."

McIlroy's journey could well include playing more tournaments on the DP World Tour, as he's enjoyed moving to a new house in London and finds he's keener now to play more around Europe.

"I would say I've ebbed and flowed over the course of my career between wanting to play more in Europe and maybe wanting to play less at times," McIlroy admitted.

"But I think now at this stage of my career, I really enjoy coming back here to play. It reminds me of why I started to play the game in the first place; links golf courses and the crowds are incredible, and the crowds next week at The Open will be amazing, as well.

"I think all of that, I don't want to say reminiscent of when I was growing up, but it's a comfortable environment for me to play in."

It's going to be a bumper 3M Open this year with Jordan Spieth joining Scottie Scheffler in committing to play in Minnesota the week after The Open.

It's not usually one of the bigger events on the PGA Tour for a couple of reasons, but the 2026 3M Open will now have two of the biggest stars in the world teeing it up at TPC Twin Cities.

As both Spieth and World No.1 Scheffler will be making their 3M Open debuts this year, heading to Blaine, Minnesota directly after competing for the Claret Jug at Royal Birkdale.

Scheffler confirmed he'd play at the 3M Open back in May, and now just ahead of returning to Royal Birkdale, the scene of his 2017 Open triumph, Spieth has joined him.

It was a surprising announcement from Scheffler, who would usually take time off directly after the final Major of the year before then heading into his final prep for the FedEx Cup Playoffs.

Spieth has followed Scheffler's example, but also maybe more out of necessity as he's currently down in 52nd in the FedEx Cup rankings and 54th in the Official World Golf Ranking so could do with some improved results.

Of course, a big performance back at Birkdale where he won his last Major in epic fashion nine years ago would help improve his standing.

Despite results not being so good, Spieth's still a huge crowd favorite though, one of the biggest draws on the PGA Tour, so it's a huge plus for the tournament.

A relatively new event on the PGA Tour, the 3M Open only debuted on the schedule in 2019 and with a prize purse of $8.8m it's one of just three main schedule tournaments to play for under $9m, with only the Wyndham Championship having a smaller prize pot with $8.5m

Also being staged the week after the Open Championship is the toughest possible spot in the calendar, with the world's top players across in the UK playing the final Major of the season.

But this year will be one of the best, if not the best, field ever assembled for the event thanks to two of the biggest guns on the PGA Tour now attending.

Spieth will join Scheffler and the likes of Hideki Matsuyama, Billy Horschel and Gary Woodland in the current field for the 2026 3M Open - along with defending champion Kurt Kitayama.

The Genesis Scottish Open is co-sanctioned between the DP World Tour and PGA Tours and counts towards both the Race to Dubai and the FedExCup. It has attracted leading players from both tours.

The world’s top two players, Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy, head the field. McIlroy has gone T2-T4-1 here in the past three years. This field also includes LIV’s Jon Rahm, a member of the DP World Tour, one of seven LIV golfers playing.

For many, this tournament is preparation for the Open Championship, which is always played on a links course. The Renaissance Club is not a traditional links, as it has been carved out from a pine forest, but it has the classic firm, seaside turf and windswept dunes of a typical links.

This is the eighth consecutive year the Renaissance club has been host. The defending champion is Chris Gotterup. He comes into the event in fine form having won last week’s John Deere Classic, one of his three wins this season.

Robert MacIntyre will have a lot of home support. He won this tournament in 2024, the first Scot to win their national championship since Colin Montgomerie did so in 1999.

Tony Finau has joined the growing list of players to withdraw from this week’s Genesis Scottish Open on the DP World Tour.

The withdrawal of the six-time PGA Tour winner and two-time Ryder Cupper from the event at the Renaissance Club in East Lothian was announced on Monday of the tournament week.

Other players who have pulled out are Keith Mitchell, Jhonattan Vegas and Taylor Pendrith.

Finau was one of six players to remove themselves from the field for the co-sanctioned event on Monday.

He is not in the field for The Open at Royal Birkdale, and his decision not to tee it up this week means he has failed to qualify for the game’s oldest championship for the first time since 2014.

The 36-year-old has endured something of an indifferent season on the PGA Tour. He has made 14 of 19 cuts but has just one top-10 finish to show for it – a T6 at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson in May.

He currently sits down in 79th in the FedEx Cup standings and has slipped outside the top 100 in the world rankings.

A number of the best players in the world are in town for the Scottish Open. World No.1 Scottie Scheffler and Masters champion Rory McIlroy headline a star-studded field for what has become one of the most popular stops on the calendar.

The likes of Tommy Fleetwood, Justin Thomas, Ludvig Aberg, Shane Lowry, Robert MacIntyre and Xander Schauffele are also in East Lothian this week as anticipation ramps up ahead of the final men’s Major of 2026.

Chris Gotterup edged out Rory McIlroy and Marco Penge to claim a surprise Scottish Open victory 12 months ago, with the American back to defend his title on the back of a win at the John Deere Classic.

McIlroy hasn’t been in action since the US Open as he looks to make it a summer to remember, while Scheffler will be eager to find top form ahead of his Open defence at Birkdale.

Another notable name in the field is Jon Rahm, who will be desperate to put himself in a good spot for the final Major of the year after a disappointing missed cut at the US Open at Shinnecock Hills.

Alongside Tyrrell Hatton, David Puig, Laurie Canter, Tom McKibbin, Adrian Meronk, and Victor Perez, the Spaniard is one of seven LIV Golf players teeing it up in Scotland.

It's a huge week on both the PGA and DP World Tours, with the co-sanctioned Genesis Scottish Open returning to the Renaissance Club.

The exclusive east-coast venue has hosted Scotland's national open since 2019, and there's a strong field once again assembled as World No.1 Scottie Scheffler and No.2 Rory McIlroy headline.

However, the number of world top-10 players is down from eight last year to six this time around, although the addition of Jon Rahm playing his first PGA Tour-sanctioned event since he left for LIV Golf in 2024 adds plenty of intrigue.

Other LIV players, who are DP World Tour members, like Tyrrell Hatton, David Puig and Thomas Detry are also playing.

The Scottish Open often divides some of the world's best players, with the majority opting to play to get links prep for The Open and others preferring to practice in links conditions away from the limelight and without a scorecard in hand.

So, who are the biggest names missing this year's Scottish Open? Let's take a look...

Cameron Young

World No.3 Cameron Young is the highest-ranked player not in the field this week.

The Players and Cadillac Championship winner has played in just one Scottish Open and it resulted in a missed cut back in 2022.

He did go onto finish 2nd in The Open at St Andrews the following week, but since then he has opted to take the week off.

Russell Henley

Henley won his sixth PGA Tour title recently at the Charles Schwab Challenge, and at 5th in the world he is the second highest-ranked player not in the field.

That comes as no surprise as he has never played in the Scottish Open before.

The American has a good Open record, with T10th and 5th-place finishes in his last two appearances.

Collin Morikawa

Morikawa has played in four of the last five Scottish Opens but he has largely struggled, with a T4 in 2024 the only standout result.

The 2021 Open champion currently ranks 6th in the world and may be opting to preserve his body after tweaking his back at the Players Championship in March.

He last played at The Travelers Championship, where he was 3rd, meaning he will have had two full weeks off before The Open.

Justin Rose

Rose is the fourth world top-10 player not in the field this week, and it is somewhat of a surprise not to see him teeing it up considering he has played in each of the last four years and is a past champion.

The Englishman obviously feels taking the week off will prepare him best for Royal Birkdale, where he will be among the tournament favorites.

Rose has an excellent Major record in recent times, with six top-10s in the last four years including two runner-up finishes.

Jordan Spieth

Jordan Spieth is another big name missing this week's Scottish Open, and it comes as no real surprise after he skipped last year's tournament following missed cuts in 2024 and 2023.

He did have a good debut in 2022 to finish T10th but throughout the years he has tended to take the week off prior to the season's final Major.

The 2026 Open is set to be a special one for Spieth, as he returns to the scene of his Claret Jug triumph at Royal Birkdale nine years ago.

Joaquin Niemann

Joaquin Niemann is another big name taking a week off before Birkdale after a busy stretch.

The Chilean, who has eight LIV titles to his name, is in impressive form after a strong fortnight on the DP World Tour where he finished 3rd at the Italian Open and then T7th at the BMW International Open.

He hasn't played in the Scottish Open since 2022, which was his only appearance.

Hideki Matsuyama

Hideki Matsuyama misses the Scottish Open for the second successive year, and it comes as no surprise.

The 2021 Masters champion has only played in this tournament three times, and he has missed the cut on each occasion.

The World No.30, who is without a top-10 since February, has yet to better his T6 finish in his 2013 Open debut.

Rickie Fowler

The 2015 Scottish Open champion is not in the field for the second consecutive year after missing the cut in 2024.

Fowler also finished inside the top-10 in 2017 and 2018 but could only manage two missed cuts and two top-50s in his next four Scottish Opens.

The six-time PGA Tour winner has a good links record with three top-six finishes in The Open, including a runner-up to Rory McIlroy in 2014.

Keegan Bradley

The 2025 USA Ryder Cup captain missed the cut here in 2022 and has not played since.

That was Bradley's one and only Scottish Open appearance, so it is no surprise to see him not listed in the field once again this week.

The 2011 PGA Champion has an underwhelming Open record with no top-10s and five missed cuts in his last six starts.

Sam Burns

Burns has been a regular at the Scottish Open in recent times but is not in the field this week - for good reason.

The World No.17, who has five PGA Tour victories, is also skipping The Open next week as he and wife, Caroline, are expecting their second child.

He has gone close at Majors over the past two years, notably last month at Shinnecock Hills where he finished 2nd to Wyndham Clark in the US Open.

Lucas Glover and Lee Hodges share the lead going into the final round, on 18 under par. But nine players are within four shots of the lead overnight, and eighteen are within five shots.

This chasing group includes 50-year-old Zach Johnson and NCA champion Preston Stout of Oklahoma State.

Johnson, who has turned down a place in the US Senior Open to compete here, would become only the ninth man in his 50s to win on the PGA Tour should he triumph today. Preston Stout would become only the ninth amateur to win on the PGA Tour, should he win.

Five shots off the lead on this low-scoring course is 19-year-old Blades Brown. Were he to win, he would become the sixth teen to win on the tour and the first since Jordan Spieth won this event in 2013.

Glover, who is aiming to be the fourth wire-to-wire winner on the PGA Tour this season, said after his third round: “It's always a shootout here. That's the way it should be. It's fun. It's exciting.”

TPC Deere Run is a course that facilitates low scoring. The cut line in the past two years has been at five under par. The winners have traditionally played at least 30% of their holes in birdie or better.

Another feature of this tournament historically is how some winners have risen through the field. For example, 2023 winner Sepp Straka was 133rd after the first round, and still only 14th after round 3.

In his 2013 win, the then 19-year old Jordan Spieth was six shots off the lead after the first round, and was still six adrift after the third round. In 2015, he came from eight shots back after round one to be two strokes ahead after the third round.

Jordan Spieth is in the field this week. Other previous winners teeing it up this week include Davis Thompson, JT Poston, Lucas Glover and Michael Kim. The defending champion is Brian Campbell. The last man to get back-to-back victories here was Steve Stricker, who won three in a row from 2009.

Those playing this week who are looking to win the event for the first time include Chris Gotterup, Ben Griffin, Jacob Bridgeman, Keegan Bradley, Rickie Fowler and Max Homa.

Hawaii will continue to have PGA Tour golf in the future, but it'll be the seniors starring as the Sony Championship Hawaii has just been announced as a PGA Tour Champions event.

The Sony Open was a long-time fixture on the PGA Tour, with the event starting out as the Hawaiian Open way back in 1965 - with Sony taking over sponsorship in 1999.

It was cut from the PGA Tour though, along with The Sentry, to leave the islands of Hawaii without any top professional golf events - but now it's been confirmed that there will in fact be a tournament staged in Hawaii in 2027.

As the Sony Open is transitioning to become the Sony Championship Hawaii, which will be a $3m PGA Tour Champions event taking place January 11-16 next year, and will remain at the famous Waialae County Club in Honolulu.

"We are excited to welcome the Sony Championship Hawaii to PGA Tour Champions," said the senior circuit's president Miller Brady.

"Sony has been an incredible PGA Tour partner since 1999, and we are looking forward to beginning this new era with the legends of the game competing on a truly iconic venue in Waialae Country Club."

It's a huge boost for both the PGA Tour Champions and Hawaii - with the state having a long and proud tradition of hosting top level golf tournaments.

“Welcoming the Sony Championship Hawaii to Waialae is more than hosting a world class golf event - it’s an opportunity to showcase the spirit of aloha and strengthen the community impact that has uplifted our islands for decades,” said Hawaii Governor Josh Green.

Waialae Country Club president Meredith Ching added: “Waialae Country Club is proud to continue its 61-year tradition of hosting championship golf, while beginning a new chapter with the PGA Tour Champions."

Having a headline sponsor such as Sony show faith in the seniors also shows that it's becoming a viable sponsorship option as more big-name players join the ranks.

There's already the likes of Ernie Els, Jim Furyk, Vijay Singh, Darren Clark and Padraig Harrington on the PGA Tour champions, and they're being joined by top golfers turning 50 all the time - such as Zach Johnson and recently Ian Poulter.

And who know,s Tiger Woods has previously expressed an interest and the PGA Tour Champions could be the perfect way for him to continue his professional career if that one day happens.

There'll be two Pro-Am days at the 2027 Sony Championship Hawaii, with three competition days all being broadcast by Golf Channel.

Golf commentator Johnson Wagner did not hold back in his thoughts on LIV Golf, saying it is "absolutely going to crumble" while also claiming a local player on the team tour is trying to get back on the PGA Tour.

Wagner, who switched from Golf Channel to CBS last December, appeared on the Scorecard on CBS podcast and was pretty strong in his opinions on LIV Golf's future.

He may have also given out a big clue as to one current LIV Golf player who's keen to return to the PGA Tour, saying he had spoken to him as he was local to his own hometown of Charlotte, North Carolina.

And Wagner can understand why this player is keen to get back on the PGA Tour, as he believes that despite CEO Scott O'Neil's positivity over finding new backers he feels LIV Golf will not survive beyond this season.

"They’re looking for $300 million to go forward for next year," Johnson said on the Scorecard podcast.

"The way they’ve currently been running that tour with the purses, $300 million is just scratching the surface. I don’t know what company, and they’re trying to break it up into $50 million investments with different companies, I don’t know what company could possibly see a return on their investment with that. It would just be somebody else throwing money away just to keep it going."

Johnson added that not being able to replicate the current prize purses would see players looking to leave LIV Golf.

"The only way that model works is by reducing purses," he added. "And when these players signed with LIV, they signed to play $20, $25 million purses, and I think there’d be absolute revolt.

"I don’t know how many players have re-signed. But this year, I know there’s a lot of contracts up, and I’m sure players are looking for a way out."

Wagner then revealed he'd spoken to one such LIV Golf player who was looking to return to the PGA Tour while delivering his verdict on the tour's future.

"I spoke to a LIV player who lives in my hometown of Charlotte the other day, and he is trying to make his way back to the PGA Tour. I think that tour is absolutely going to crumble in August. It'll be done."

It has to be said, O'Neil has remained a bundle of positivity during his search for new investment, and several players have also spoken of being hopeful that a LIV 2.0 will find a financial backer.

It is getting a bit late in the day though and there are rumblings of players looking to at least sound out alternatives such as a route back to the PGA Tour or even playing on the DP World Tour.

And as for Johnson's claim about a fellow Charlotte resident, both Harold Varner III and Caleb Surratt are known to currently call the city home but neither will be especially keen to hear about these comments.

College superstar Jackson Koivun insists he feels "comfortable" making his first start in what many believe will be a stellar professional career - as he achieves his dream of joining the PGA Tour.

It's only natural for amateurs to be nervous on their professional debuts - but despite being just 21 Koivun is no ordinary amateur as one of the best college players of all time, who has already mixed it successully with the big boys.

Koivun broke records at college with Auburn and also made history as an amateur playing on the PGA Tour - and says he just felt the time was right to go pro, which naturally enough he does after a successful final amateur appearance.

Koivun was the joint-best amateur at the US Open at Shinnecock Hills in his final outing as an amateur, with the John Deere Classic his first professional event.

Koivun could've stayed in college a further year, but after already deferring the PGA Tour card he won to help Auburn to a second National Championship, he says he just "felt like I was ready" to take on the big boys.

"At the end of the day my dream growing up was to play on the PGA Tour," said Koivun ahead of the John Deere Classic. "I had that opportunity after my sophomore year and wasn't quite ready.

"After last summer it was kind of like it was just time. It was just a feeling. Just had the opportunity and took it, because like I said it's been my dream my entire life. Now I can go do it."

He does say he'll feel the nerves come his first tee shot, but even the fact that he's "always told myself if I'm not feeling nerves it means I don't care" shows what an old head he has on such young shoulders.

Koivun is coming off that second NCAA title plus a record six-win season during an unparalleled college career - where he also became the only player ever to win the three top awards (Fred Haskins, Ben Hogan and Jack Nicklaus) on multiple occasions.

And last year Koivun became the first amateur to record four straight top-11 finishes on the PGA Tour - including one at the John Deere Classic - which adds to a comfort level on his debut which stems from his game being in good shape.

"Just trying to come out here and have fun," he said of his debut. "I'm comfortable and happy where I'm at in my golf game and what I've done so far, and just trying to keep the ball rolling."

PGA Tour pros already impressed by Koivun

Koivun's most impressive result last season was T4 at the Procore Championship playing against most of the USA Ryder Cup team - where he impressed everyone who saw him.

Justin Thomas said: "This kid is really, really good." And he wasn't the only one impressed with Koivun playing in the final group in that tournament as an amateur.

"He’s one of the most confident golfers in the world, whether it’s amateur or professional, and one of the most talented,” said Ben Griffin, who will play alongside Koivun at TPC Deere Run in his pro debut - with Jordan Spieth completing the trio.

And that's another reason why so much is expected from Koivun, as he's obviously got the talent but also seems to have the confidence and character to make a big splash on the PGA Tour.

Griffin even joked: “There’s not anything I can say that’s going to help a kid that’s probably better than me.”

Koivun tees off alongside Spieth and Griffin at 8:35am Eastern Time (1:35pm BST) from the 10th at TPC Deere Run in the first round on Thursday - and will have plenty of eyes on his performance right from the start.

A lot has been made of Rory McIlroy's schedule of late, and on Wednesday his non-golfer calendar contained a European Ryder Cup day out at Wimbledon to take in some tennis

McIlroy was sporting his Masters Green Jacket after successfully defending his title at Augusta National, and took the acclaim of the Centre Court crowd as he was joined by several team mates and captain Luke Donald.

Tommy Fleetwood and Justin Rose were also at SW19 along with Thomas Bjorn and both Molinari brothers, Francesco and Edoardo, as Team Europe had a day out in Wimbledon's exclusive Royal Box to celebrate their victory at Bethpage last year.

McIlroy's brilliant second successive Masters victory in April meant that he has another year of donning his Green Jacket out in public - as long as he gets permission from Augusta National as is the protocol.

McIlroy has recently moved back to the UK with a new home set up in the exclusive Wentworth estate, and he's spent time settling in with his family in between rare PGA Tour appearances and playing in the Majors.

The Northern Irishman has regularly skipped PGA Tour events in order to prepare for the Majors and enjoy life outside of golf, something which he's determined to carry on doing.

He'll likely fall short of playing the minimum tournament requirement to retain PGA Tour membership, but the Tour recently said that as a life member for hitting 20 wins he'd have a lower threshold to meet so would have no problems for 2027.

The six-time Major champion is a well-known tennis fan and has been to various big events before, including Wimbledon, and he was joined at the All England Club by wife Erica and his Ryder Cup teammates.

Justin Rose and wife Kate were also pictured at Wimbledon along with Tommy Fleetwood and two-time winning captain Luke Donald and wife Diane.

After a crushing victory in Rome followed by historic success in New York, Donald is looking to win three in a row next year when the Ryder Cup returns to Ireland at Adare Manor.

Jim Furyk is having his second spell as Team USA captain in 2027 hoping to thwart Donald's three-peat and also end the long wait for an American win in Europe that now stretches back 33 years.

Donald had his backroom boys with him too, as Thomas Bjorn, a victorious captain in Paris back in 2018, attended with Italian brothers Francesco and Edoardo Molinari.

Francesco is tipped as a future captain after Donald, while Edoardo is the statistical brains behind the operation with his analysis on pairings and course management often cited as a crucial difference in Ryder Cups.

Whether the conversation drifts off to potential pairings for Ireland or course setup at Adare Manor during breaks in play we won't find out - as the European Ryder Cup stars enjoy watching the likes of Jannik Sinner and Novak Djokovic among other big hitters of the tennis world.

The PGA Tour heads to TPC Deere Run in the midwest to celebrate Independence Day as players hope to cap a weekend of celebrations with victory at the 2026 John Deere Classic.

After the US Open and a couple of Signature Events in June, some of the world's elite are taking a rest this week as the build-up to the Open Championship starts, but there's still a decent field gathering in Illinois for the $8.8m PGA Tour event.

Headlining is Jordan Spieth who has a strong affinity with the event as a two-time champion at the John Deere Classic.

Spieth is joined by the likes of former Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley, along with Rickie Fowler, Max Homa and recent winner JT Poston all hoping to celebrate the Fourth of July weekend with a trophy.

Ben Griffin, Chris Gotterup and Jacob Bridgeman are the other top-25 players in the world teeing it up, while talented college superstar Jackson Koivun will be making his professional debut after turning pro following the US Open.

Brian Campbell is the defending champion and is back to defend the trophy he won last year thanks to a playoff victory over Emiliano Grillo.

The action gets under way on Thursday 2 July at 7:40am Eastern Time (12:40pm BST) at TPC Deere Run, with the same start time on Friday for the second round - with the traditional two-tee start.

Jordan Spieth has warned golf needs to quickly get a grip on sports betting and the manner in which it's affecting fan behavior in the sport.

The subject of unruly fan behavior in golf has become a hot topic in the game, and Spieth says that sports betting could be the reason behind the growing number of incidents on the course.

Wyndham Clark's treatment at the US Open was the latest example, and while there were other obvious reasons behind that, Spieth believes the rise of sports betting is still a factor in the general fan behavior problems.

And it's something that Spieth thinks needs to be looked at because of one big reason - the fact that fans can affect the outcome in golf much more than in most other sports.

Clark's previous hitsory, notably his locker smash at Oakmont, was obviously part of the reason the Shinnecock Hills fans were not on his side, but Spieth says sports betting could also have played a part.

"I think the one thing that I'll point out is I do think that betting in golf is something that's going to have to be tackled here soon, because I don't know how much of, say, the Wyndham scenario was the fact that it was enticing to bet the field versus Wyndham on Sunday in a legalized betting state," said Spieth.

"And you could have had people out there that are essentially, you know, have $100 to $10,000, depending on who it is, on the field versus somebody else."

Unlike gambling on the NFL, NBA or any other American sports, golf bettors are the only ones who could in theory have a big say on the outcome if they attend tournaments, as golfers are far more vulnerable to either close-up abuse or distraction - even during their swings.

And that's something Spieth feels needs to be considered going forward, as it could be a reason behind increased fan unrest at golf tournaments.

"In golf it's tricky because you could actually impact the outcome if you wanted to. It may not last very long, but you could impact a shot if you wanted to," Spieth explained.

"I don't know of another sport that you could impact as a fan like you can golf. So I don't know how much that's having to do with it, if it's different than it used to be."

Spieth, who does have an endoresment deal with sports betting compnay FanDuel, still insists that although unruly fans are not new to the sport, betting has increasingly become a reasons.

"I've also played rounds with guys who were not treated well 10, 15 years ago. I don't think it's a crazy new thing," said Spieth.

"I do think the Bethpage Ryder Cup was, from what I understand, maybe a lingering effect from that with an American versus European. You know, Cam Young, Fitzpatrick, The Players. I'm trying to single them out for you, but I wasn't a part of either one of them, but I will say that from what I've seen, a lot of times it has to do with betting, and that is in the last five years.

"We'll see what happens with that."

Spieth's comments drew some criticism from fans online, most pointing out his association with Fan Duel, but others agreed that the wider point needs addressing.

Such is the secrecy around professional sport, it's often rare that we have any idea what an athlete is going through during competitive play.

Injuries, or something more serious, can affect performance, as proven by Mark Hubbard, who is competing at the Travelers Championship.

Shooting a two-over-par tournament total, Hubbard's brother, Nathan, revealed on Saturday that the American was suffering with a heart disease that first came into effect at The Memorial Tournament three weeks ago.

In a lengthy thread on X/Twitter, Nathan wrote: "A thread on why my brother’s situation - playing with @JordanSpieth tomorrow despite dealing with a significant heart condition - is an example of why the @PGATOUR absolutely did the right thing this week."

He went on to add: "The cut and the meritocracy are the two most important and defining characteristics of golf as a sport, and here’s a current example of why the @PGATOUR’s decision to support both of those things as the underpinning of the future of golf is so important to the sport.

"My brother @HomelessHubbs earned enough points to qualify for the Travelers Championship elevated event this week. He was fortunate; a couple guys fumbled the bag at the Canadian Open on the 18th hole to allow him to sneak in.

"He wasn’t able to play that event though, because the week before, in the middle of The Memorial (Jack’s tournament), he started having chest pains.

"He’d had a flu like virus for a few days. He’d felt winded and his heart was racing. After his Friday round the tour doctors sent him to the ER and thank God for that…

"He was in the middle of a cardio myopathy. He was hospitalized in Columbus for four days. Withdrew from US Open qualifying (where he’d been a medalist in the past two years). Tried to play Canada but no doctor would approve it and he couldn’t really swing so he had to WD.

"So after two weeks of rest, by some stroke of luck or the golf gods smiling, he got in this week. Now, why would he come out and play? He’s not remotely full strength. He’s wearing a device that captures data so docs can analyze it and determine next steps. Why is he playing?

"He currently sits 98th in FedEx cup points. There are six more events left in the season. The top 100 guys keep their card, and the top 70 guys automatically get into all the big events next year. He’s right on the bubble.

"He has no contract, no salary. His wife and daughters basically only eat if he plays well, makes the cut (and therefore makes money). There’s not a doctor on the planet who would tell him to play this week. But, this tournament has no cut. So he will earn a few points no matter what happens this week.

"He is playing at about 50% of his actual capacity as an athlete to try to keep his job and, at the end of the season, the difference between the guy who finishes 100 and 101 is sometimes a single point - he will earn more than that for last place this week. Every single shot, every single point matters to his family.

"Some - including some golfers on tour - think this is unfair. He’s had an abnormally long career, and he’s a top 10 earner of all time on tour without a win. He will forever hold the record for most events played in a single season. The definition of an all-time grinder.

"What makes golf and - by virtue of the direction the @PGATOUR took this week - the tour great, is that it is the only sport in the world where everything is because of you. It’s all your glory, and all your fault. No teammates, no opponents on the other side.

"Players deal w/this intense psychological pressure in different ways. Scottie subjugates golf to his faith and family so he doesn’t care too much. Tiger seems to have punished his body to the point of compartmentalizing using substances to numb the pain. Golfers run the gamut.

"But only in golf is it you vs the game. Highly skilled guys cannot become pros because they cannot handle the mental side of it. You must take complete ownership of your failures, and most humans simply can’t do that. That’s the beauty of the sport.

"So the cut, and the meritocracy, are EVERYTHING in determining who is great at golf. Without them, it’s a game, not a sport.

"And look - if my brother was putting his life completely at risk he wouldn’t play, and he could enter the (really challenging) program for players with major medical issues.

"But this is the only sport where a player with his condition would even be out there this week. And tomorrow he tees off with @JordanSpieth early in the morning, just trying to survive and get a few more points.

"He earned it. That’s entertainment! It freaking matters so much.

"Golfers aren’t tough guys physically, but the best ones are as tough or tougher mentally than any other athlete. It’s why so many of them are so damn weird (sorry but true).

"ALL of it is due to the fact that you only eat what you kill. It creates a cascading set of decisions and consequences big and small, one of which is @HomelessHubbs this week.

"He’s only out there because there’s no cut! So: Long live the cut, and long live the meritocracy."

Earning a season-best result of second at the ONEflight Myrtle Beach Classic, Hubbard has seven missed cuts in 2026, with the 37-year-old's only other top 25 coming at the Cognizant Classic.

As of writing, his rounds of 69, 71, 72 and 70 means he sits solo 70th at the Travelers Championship, with Hubbard predicted to drop from 98th in the FedEx Cup standings to 99th.

Just a handful of tournaments remain before the FedEx Cup Playoffs in August, meaning Hubbard needs a strong run of results to move inside the top 70, as well as stay inside the top 100.

Following the Tour Championship, which takes place on August 27-30th, there are eight Fall events, which could play a big part in Hubbard's PGA Tour stature, something that has seen him make 181 cuts in 277 starts and earn over $13 million in career earnings.

Taking place the week after the Signature Event of the Travelers Championship, as well as the week prior to a fortnight stretch in the United Kingdom, the John Deere Classic hasn't yielded the star power we've seen in the past.

However, that appears to be changing in 2026, as one of the strongest fields in the tournament's history will descend on TPC Deere Run, with the event taking place 2nd-5th July.

Among the headliners are two-time John Deere Classic winner, and three-time Major champion, Jordan Spieth, who features after missing the tournament in 2025.

Famously, back in 2013, Spieth claimed his maiden PGA Tour title at the age of 19 at this event.

Holing out from the greenside bunker at the 72nd hole, the American went on to win a five-hole, three-man, playoff, becoming the fourth youngest PGA Tour winner and the first teenage winner since Ralph Guldahl at the 1931 Santa Monica Open.

Two years after that victory, Spieth then won another playoff at the John Deere Classic, with the victory part of his historic five-win season that included The Masters and US Open.

Other notable names in the field this year are Genesis Invitational winner Jacob Bridgeman, while Memorial Tournament winner, JT Poston, also tees it up in Illinois.

Chris Gotterup, who has two wins on the PGA Tour in 2026, will also be present, as will former Ryder Cup players Keegan Bradley, Rickie Fowler, Ben Griffin and Max Homa.

Coming off strong US Open performances, both Tom Kim and Keith Mitchell are in the field, while one particular name is to make his professional debut after earning low amateur honors at Shinnecock Hills.

Jackson Koivun, who produced an incredible amateur career, will tee it up at the John Deere Classic for the first time as a professional.

Earning his status in the pro ranks thanks to gaining enough points on the PGA Tour University’s Accelerated program, which runs through the end of 2027, Koivun will be one to watch going into the future.

Although Rory McIlroy seems certain to fall short of playing the minimum 15 tournaments on the PGA Tour this year he's never seemed worried.

Sir Nick Faldo ran into McIlroy at Royal Birkdale, where he was prepping for The Open instead of playing at the Travelers Championship - a theme for him this year as he looks set to fall short of playing the PGA Tour minimum.

But McIlroy has never seemed concerned. Could that be because he already knows that CEO Brian Rolapp and the PGA Tour won't take any significant action against him that could affect his status for 2027?

A report by Bob Harig would suggest that could be the case, as when he discussed the prospect of the PGA Tour bending the rules to keep McIlroy's status, Ponte Vedra got in touch.

In truth, McIlroy was never going to budge from his stance of playing exactly when and where he wanted, and the PGA Tour was never going to punish its biggest star.

According to Harig, though, we now know the reason McIlroy would escape punishment, as he says the PGA Tour contacted him to point out the following crucial rule in the player handbook.

“Notwithstanding the above, the Commissioner, upon application by a foreign member and for medical reasons or other extraordinary circumstances that the Commissioner, at his discretion, determines to be a valid reason for not playing in at least 15 PGA Tour cosponsored or approved tournaments, may reduce the 15-minimum (or 12-minimum as the case may be) tournament requirement.”

What that means is that if and when McIlroy falls short of playing the minimum 15 events this season, there's a rule in place to allow Rolapp and the PGA Tour to let him retain his playing rights for 2027.

Just what the "extraordinary circumstances" would be are unclear, and Golf Monthly has contacted the PGA Tour for comment.

McIlroy has had an injury this year that forced him out of the Arnold Palmer Invitational but he returned for The Players before resting between Sawgrass and the Masters.

He still had plenty of practice trips to Augusta National though and since then has chosen to skip PGA Tour events in favor of both moving back to a new house in the UK and preparing for Majors.

And McIlroy still has chances to make up his minimum 15, with the 3M Open, Rocket Classic and Wyndham Championship taking place after The Open and before the FedEx Cup Playoffs.

If he plays all three playoff events he'll get to 14 without taking in one of those previous, so it is within his power - but he is sticking to his guns of playing exactly when and where he wants.

"I've been doing this a long time, I've been on Tour longer - more than half of my life at this point," McIlroy has said about his schedule.

"So I'll pick and choose my spots like I have been doing sort of the last 18 months to two years."

So it seems certain he'll fall short, but also seems certain there'll be no serious punishment from the PGA Tour for it - after all, with all the changes coming Rolapp would not want to be involved in an altercation with his biggest attraction.

Especially a star attraction such as McIlroy, arguably the biggest in the game who seems determined to make his schedule how he wants it - which includes more global appearances.

The 37-year-old will play in Ireland, India and Australia this year along with the regular visits to Wentworth and Dubai - and has previously said around 18-20 events in a year is his target number.

There was a Norwegian invasion at the Travelers Championship as fans heading to the World Cup stopped in to cheer on Viktor Hovland and Kristoffer Reitan - and it worked a treat!

Norway supporters have made a big impact on the World Cup with their 'Viking Row' celebration - and the team has done pretty well too with two wins from two and Erling Haaland banging in the goals.

Hovland and Reitan watched Norway beat Senegal in New York on Tuesday before making the short trip to Connecticut - and so too did plenty of Norwegian fans, on their way to Boston for their next game against France on Friday.

We've seen the likes of Scotland fans taking in some baseball during the World Cup, and now Norwegian fans stormed TPC River Highlands to back both Reitan and Hovland - even treating them to the Viking Row a few times.

And it worked - as Hovland shot 65 and Reitan one better with a 64 in the opening round on Thursday.

Each one was treated to some huge roars with every birdie, while both Hovland and Reitan had the Viking Row celebration after finishing their rounds.

"I think the games and the golf events setup quite nicely, so they can make a pit stop here for the interested fans or the golf-interested fans," said Reitan.

"So it sets up quite nicely for that. And it's cool for them to make a pit stop here and for me to experience a miniature version of what the football players get to experience."

Both men mingled with the Norway fans after their rounds and posed for pictures, with World Cup fever finally finding a way into golf after appearing in a number of other sports across America.

Reitan and Hovland were obviously boosted by watching their country win against Senegal to ensure a last 32 spot in Norway's first World Cup appearance since 1998.

"It was unbelievable," said Reitan. "For me, I haven't seen Norway in the World Cup for my whole life, so it was awesome.

"The crowds are amazing, the team was performing excellent. Yeah, it was an experience I'll remember for the rest of my life."

Matt Fitzpatrick hit 13 of 14 fairways in The Travelers Championship opening round after putting a new driver in the bag.

The World No.4 has played a Titleist driver for a number of years but moved into a completely new brand this week, with a Ping model going in for the $20m Signature Event, and it worked very well in the opening round.

As an equipment free agent, Fitzpatrick is able to pick and choose whichever clubs he wants, and his Titleist GT3 has come out in favor of a Ping G430 LST.

Fitzpatrick admitted he "struggled off the tee" last weekend in the US Open at Shinnecock Hills, where he shot 74-73 over the final two rounds to finish 22nd.

He ranked 70th out of 72 players in Strokes Gained: Off the tee on the fourth day.

"Just struggled off the tee. You got to give yourself a chance at making some scores. Not only a chance of making birdies, but just trying to make comfortable pars. I think for me that's been, that was the big thing at the weekend that I struggled with," he said.

"I just, I didn't hit my driver very well and I feel like that that was kind of what held me back most of all."

"I have a different driver this week. That's obviously new. Just getting comfortable with that and I had, you know, felt like I practiced well these first three days as well and just managed to find something that I felt was working a bit better."

Fitzpatrick ranked 12th in Strokes Gained: Off the tee in round one of The Travelers, where he gained over a stroke and carded a six-under-par 64.

'I've lived in the heel my whole career'

"Well, I was explaining it earlier this week that it's not as straightforward as everyone thinks," Fitzpatrick said.

"When you fit a golf club, everyone has tendencies, and not to bore everyone, but my tendency is like I like clubs or a driver with the CG closer to the heel.

"That's kind of where my, where I've lived for basically my whole career. And certain golf clubs are, like, made without that.

"Just the box one, the one you buy off the rack might have it on the toe side, which if you gave that to me I would hit it 500 yards right or whatever it is.

"So the detail is really important and it's important to try and get that right as best as you can.

"Everyone is different, their habits, how they move the club, how they reacts to different clubs.

"I tried one in Canada where it was literally exactly that, like neutral, neutral, neutral and I hit it 50 yards right, and that's just the way I react.

"So I think people think that guys just get driver and it's just going to go straight and away you go and there's obviously a lot more to it than that."

New Srixon ZXi RKT drivers

Fitzpatrick is not the only player with a new driver in the bag at TPC River Highlands, as Srixon released its new drivers on tour this week. The ZXi RKT was revealed prior to The Travelers, with three different heads available - the standard, LS and Max.

The ZXi RKT has made its way on to the USGA's Conforming List and, along with those three models, there's also an LS+ and various versions of the ZXi RKT head.

Hideki Matsuyama and Ryan Fox were pictured using one of the new models in the opening round, while Shane Lowry was also testing it this week - although we haven't yet confirmed if it went in for the tournament.

Those jeers that surprised us all at the US Open may have been the best thing to happen for Wyndham Clark, as they've gone a long way to rehabilitate an image and reputation that when you think about it may have been a touch unfair in the first place.

For starters, not everyone was rooting against Clark at Shinnecock Hills, and of those that were not all of them were doing it because they personally didn't like the guy - many just either wanted some drama or were pulling for Scottie Scheffler's Grand Slam bid.

Brooks Koepka got similar treatment at Bethpage Black during the 2019 PGA Championship, while we all know how the Ryder Cup went, so part of the problem was just simply the rowdy New York crowd.

But there's no doubt Clark's perceived bad boy image was also at play here - mainly for him smashing up a locker at Oakmont at last year's US Open but also a few other transgressions that have worked against him.

The way he handled himself at Shinnecock Hills though was exceptional, every neutral can admit that, and in the days following his second US Open success he's surely won people over

The 32-year-old could easily have reacted to the fans during that super stressful Shinnecock Sunday, but he battled through, lifted the trophy and even then resisted the temptation to stick it to the New York fans.

He won with good grace, even praising the fans and later saying it was good for the sport of golf to have a newer audience attending tournaments.

Subsequent interviews have revealed a far more humble and likeable personality than his previous persona has suggested, and maybe like Bryson DeChambeau this US Open victory could be a turning point from pantomime villain to crowd favorite.

And much like DeChambeau, Clark does things his own way and, like him or not, is very much a character that does occasionally say things that rub some people up the wrong way.

He says what he thinks though, and isn't authenticity needed in sport? You could also argue that any good sport needs a villain...

Why Wyndham Clark had a bad reputation

First and foremost, Clark is still taking heat for smashing up a locker in the famous old clubhouse at Oakmont during last year's US Open.

Clark did apologize after the event, but not quite as quickly as some wanted and also not as contrite as many thought he should be.

That came just a month after Clark also got in hot water during the PGA Championship at Quail Hollow with an angry driver throw after a bad tee shot - damaging a sign but coming close to hitting either a fan or volunteer.

So an anger issue became the theme for Clark, but he faced a lot of questions pre-Shinnecock about those and insisted incidents like at Oakmont "are not me" and seemed genuinely apologetic.

And just to prove it, Clark then had to run the gauntlet of the New York fans on Sunday, keeping his cool remarkably well considering - maybe this is a new calmer Wyndham Clark?

Maybe he shouldn't have had to prove himself - yes the locker damage was awful but he did apologize and it's not like he's the only golfer to have let his temper boil over.

Even Rory McIlroy has launched a club into a lake, Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton turn the air blue almost constantly and Sergio Garcia dismantled a tee box at Augusta National this year - so Clark could have a case for feeling hard done by in comparison.

Just another reason why keeping his cool at Shinnecock was so impressive.

Hero or villain - Clark character shines through

So will Clark go the DeChambeau route and now become something of a cult hero, or will he remain a Patrick Reed type as a pantomime villain - you could say there's more to gain as a villain these days.

Fighting the crowd certainly brought out the dog in Clark, something he'll need to build on this success as despite having pocketed two Majors his record overall in the top events is average at best.

Good guy or bad guy though, Clark should retain his character as he shoots from the hip, much to the dismay of his PR team at times - especially when telling the story of how NFL quarterback Baker Mayfield stole his girlfriend a decade ago.

Doing the rounds on Barstool, Pat McAfee and other podcasts following Shinnecock, Clark showed he's no wallflower, confirming his now infamous saying that "a lot of grape was opened" to celebrate after Sunday.

He's previously explained frequent equipment changes by saying "it's nice to have a week-long girlfriend" although he was qick to clarify it was a joke.

And at this year's Masters Par-3 Contest, while watching most of the other players go around with their childrean, Clark said: "I will say as a man with no kids, it’s great birth control, but it’s a lot of fun."

So Clark is a character we surely need in golf, he can make good headlines as well as bad, and his media roadshow this week is shedding a new light on him that could, and should, win over some new fans.

Going full Bryson seems a longshot, but just being able to close the Oakmont chapter and be known for his golf will be a start.

Is the rise of controversial crowd behavior such as at the US Open down to golf now branching out and attracting more general sports fans? Keegan Bradley thinks so, and even Wyndham Clark thinks it's a good thing.

Bradley did say it was "unfortunate" that a proportion of the crowd at Shinnecock Hills was so overtly cheering against Clark during the US Open - in arguably the toughest atmosphere an American has faced trying to win his national championship.

Battling Scottie Scheffler chasing the Grand Slam didn't help, but many still feel shouts of "get in the bunker" and cheering Clark's bad shots overstepped the mark.

Bradley knows a thing or two about rowdy New York crowds from his Ryder Cup captaincy, and although this was nowhere near the level of nearby Bethpage Black it has led to further criticism of what some feel is a worrying growing culture of fans going too far.

Bradley, though, feels it just shows that golf is now capturing the public imagination, and attracting fans that are usually attending different sports such as at NBA or NFL games.

And there's not many fanbases more vocal than those in the New York area.

"I think that golf is in the process of leaving just the golf world, where people are coming to tournaments that are sports fans and that's how people in New York cheer on the Knicks or the Giants or whatever," said Bradley at the Travelers Championship.

"And they're coming to tournaments and they're sports fans, and they're golfers, but I think that we're entering a time where the game is really growing in popularity."

Bradley believes more fans are now coming to golf tournaments to enjoy themselves ahead of watching the best golfers in the planet - but that's all part of a sport growing outside it's usual demographic.

"I think people are coming to golf tournaments to have a good time," he added.

"I found it a little surprising, considering Wyndham's American, and at the US Open, but Scottie Scheffler's a really popular player going for the Grand Slam.

"Unfortunate, but hey, I mean, Wyndham won, so he handled it really well. I think it's just, we're in an interesting time here where golf is really taking off and we're seeing a different group of people coming to these tournaments."

'Golf is cool right now' - Clark

And even Clark, who was on the wrong end of the crowd, insisted that it's a good thing a newer audience is coming out to watch the sport.

"I don't really see any negative in more people coming to the golf," said Clark, even though he had to battle against the fans all day on Sunday.

"I think of, jokingly think of Happy Gilmore when he first came out and they had all those crazy fans, when he played in that movie.

"But I think that's good. It brings new audiences. I think it's great for the game of golf. Golf is cool right now.

"That's going to bring cool people, and they're going to want to watch golf and they might react differently. I think maybe it's a little different in New York than maybe other places, but, no, I think it's all good."

Historic change is coming to the PGA Tour from 2028, but just how the new schedule is going to look when it's all said and done remains a bit of a mystery.

Brian Rolapp announced the seismic changes at The Travelers Championship that will see a two-tiered system put into place for the future of the PGA Tour.

The PGA Tour Championship Series will be the new pinnacle of men's pro golf with the PGA Tour Challenger Series a new pumped-up second tier operating above the Korn Ferry Tour.

The Championship Series will feature the world's top players and the most iconic courses battling it out for the top prize money - but what will these events be?

It was very much a top level briefing from Rolapp, with the revamping of the season-ending playoffs a big one, with matchplay set to be introduced at some point during the postseason.

Still to be decided though is the make-up of the regular season, which will have about 15 events once you take out the four Majors, The Players Championship and the playoffs.

Rolapp said that even building a new course for a PGA Tour event - citing TPC Sawgrass as an example - was still on the table, but in the immediate future he spoke of his desire to play at iconic venues not regularly seen on Tour.

So what current events will make up the Championship Series and what new markets and courses could the PGA Tour target?

Signature Events to make 2028 PGA Tour schedule

There are eight Signature Events on the 2026 PGA Tour schedule, but the announcement that Sentry would sponsor the Torrey Pines event would suggest that will make it onto the new calendar.

So we'll have Torrey Pines, followed by the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, Genesis Invitational, Arnold Palmer Invitational, RBC Heritage, Cadillac Championship, Truist Championship, The Memorial and Travelers Championship all on the schedule.

A collection of iconic events on top-notch courses with decent history, they certainly fit the bill for the new PGA Tour. Donald Trump's Doral returning to the PGA Tour just in time to join the party was likely no coincidence.

It's hard to see any of these being dropped and they look like a solid nine events to build around, but what about another six?

Current PGA Tour events to make 2028 calendar

Rolapp said that 10 events had already been agreed so there's a current PGA Tour event that's already had the nod for 2028, but which one is that, and what others will achieve Championship status?

The Chales Schwab Challenge at Colonial is the longest-running PGA Tour event held at the same course, but even that has doubts about making the top tier according to local reports.

The title sponsors were reportedly offered the chance to be a Signature Event in the past but declined, and the current sponsorship expires after next year's event.

Texas is an issue - there's also the CJ Cup Byron Nelson and with such a golfing legend's name attached to the event it'd seem like some sort of sacrilege to relegate that to a second tier.

There's also the Houston Open and Texas Open that appear just before The Masters to consider - will they survive or be dropped? You suspect much will depend on how deep the sponsor's pockets are.

What about the WM Phoenix Open? One of the biggest, certainly loudest, stops on the PGA Tour, and played at a TPC course in Scottsdale which always helps - and it did get elevated status in 2023 when played for a $20m prize purse.

The Canadian Open would fit into the new mantra of national opens the PGA Tour is trying to tap into, so it would make sense to have a stop north of the border with the top stars all in toe.

Another no-brainer on that front is the Scottish Open, which PGA Tour players are starting to love playing in to get some links golf prep in ahead of The Open.

It's co-sanctioned with the DP World Tour but although the Strategic Alliance is up for renewal next year it seems like a logical step to keep the annual trip to Scotland on the top rung of tournaments.

New markets & courses for 2028 PGA Tour

The PGA Tour mentioned seven possible markets that would be explored for new tournaments - with Boston, Denver, New York, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Seattle and Washington DC all in the mix.

There's some truly iconic courses the PGA Tour could use around these markets - just think of Medinah for a big new Chicago event or Brookline for a brand new regular spot in Boston.

Seattle is an interesting one, with multiple reports stating it's well on the PGA Tour radar with Sahalee Country Club near Seattle the main option. Chambers Bay hosted the 2015 US Open, to mixed reviews admittedly, but it's clear the Pacific Northwest could easily support a big tournament.

Congressional is an awesome course that's hosted the PGA Tour before, as well as Majors, while there's so many to mention around Philadelphia (Merion, Aronimink etc) and San Francisco (Olympic Club, Harding Park) that finding a course would be the least of the problems.

One big question coming away from the US Open could be about New York though, with an abundance of glorious golf courses around the Big Apple but the crowd behavior has been called into question.

Market forces will again come into play and whether that would put the PGA Tour off is another matter. But expect maybe around three to five of these new markets to appear in 2028 with more to come.

The Travelers Championship is the final Signature Event of the PGA Tour season and has attracted eight of the world’s top-10 golfers. Below we have all the info on how to watch the Travelers Championship 2026 online and on TV.

Viktor Hovland goes in to the final day one shot ahead of World No.1 Scottie Scheffler. Just as on Saturday, these two will be the final pairing out on Sunday afternoon.

Hovland came out best from that Saturday match up, with a round of 64 to Scheffler’s 67. “It was really fun,” said Hovland afterwards. “It’s been a while since I've been in this position. To go head-to-head against the best player in the world and pull off some great shots, it was just a lot of fun. Scottie and I have separated ourselves from the rest of the field, but at the same time, 14- or 15-under is still very much in this thing if they go and shoot a very low score tomorrow.”

There is no-one on 14 under however. Hovland is on 20 under, Scheffler 19 under. In joint third place after 54 holes are Patrick Cantlay and Akshay Bhatia. Those in joint fifth are on 13 under.

It is a low-scoring course, so if Hovland and Scheffler stumble the chasing pack can easily catch up. But at present the most likely outcome looks to be an enticing head-to-head between the final pair on Sunday. They tee off at 2.55pm EDT.

In the US, TV coverage for the Travelers Championship is spread across ESPN Select, the Golf Channel and NBC.

Format

The Travelers Championship is a 72-hole strokeplay event with the field restricted to 72 players. There is no cut, so all golfers play all four rounds.

Preview

Wyndham Clark has climbed back into this top 10 with his second US Open win and, with two wins and a third place in his past four tournaments, is a man in form.

But World No.1 Scottie Scheffler, who has eight top-five finishes in his 13 starts this season, starts as favourite. He will be looking to get bank to winning ways having not won since January. He won the Travelers, after a playoff with Tom Kim, in 2024.

The defending champion is Keegan Bradley, who also won this event in 2023, when he set the 72-hole scoring record of 272. Last year he pipped Tommy Fleetwood, who had a three-stroke lead going into the final round, and Russell Henley to the title by a single shot.

JT Poston won the most recent Signature Event, the Memorial Tournament, and comes into this this week with his best result in a Major, having finished T4 at the US Open. He was runner up at the Travelers in 2022.

TPC River Highlands has undergone several transformations during its history, but since 1984, it has been best known as the home of the PGA Tour’s Travelers Championship.

Nowadays, the tournament is one of the biggest on the PGA Tour thanks to its status as a Signature Event, but TPC River Highlands has long been one of the stars of the show.

At just 6,841 yards, it is one of the shorter courses used on the PGA Tour, helping to make low scores commonplace.

However, that doesn’t mean it can’t trip players up, in particular on a famous stretch of holes on the back nine where birdies and eagles can come along as easily as bogeys.

In fact, it’s the tendency for the course to produce low-scoring rounds that have given it some of its most memorable moments, with one in particular written into golf folklore.

But what exactly is there to know about the famous Connecticut layout? Here are seven things about TPC River Highlands you may not have been aware of.

A Rich History

The Connecticut course was built in 1928 and originally known as Middletown Golf Club. Six years later, it was renamed Edgewood Country Club.

It was purchased by the PGA Tour in the early 1980s and brought up to TPC standards with a redesign by Pete Dye.

When it reopened, it was initially called TPC of Connecticut before it was redesigned by Bobby Weed in 1989 and renamed TPC River Highlands – a nod to its elevated position above the nearby Connecticut River.

It has been the permanent home of the Travelers Championship since 1984, when the tournament was named the Sammy Davis Jr. Greater Hartford Open.

The 'Bermuda Triangle'

Following Weed’s redesign, a three-hole stretch framing a lake on the back nine became famous for its risk/reward opportunities.

It later became known as the Bermuda Triangle and encompasses holes 15, 16 and 17.

The drivable par-4 15th can be tempting for players to go for the green from the tee, but water lurking to the left punishes any inaccuracy.

The 16th is a par-3 that requires a precise tee shot to a shallow green with water in front.

Finally, at the the par-4 17th, the lake runs along the entire length of the right side before the hole bends right towards a green on the far side of the water.

A 58 From Furyk

In 2016, TPC River Highlands was the scene of a landmark moment in PGA Tour history when Jim Furyk shot a 58 in the final round of the Travelers Championship.

It remains the lowest score in PGA Tour history, and a plaque commemorating the achievement is beside the 18th green.

That’s not the only thing marking the round. A new clubhouse opened at TPC River Highlands in 2019 and it features the restaurant Grille 58, named after Furyk’s historic moment.

Amateur PGA Tour Record

Furyk’s 58 bettered the previous course record by two. That had been set by Patrick Cantlay and also achieved a new PGA Tour record. Cantlay shot his 60 at the 2011 tournament.

At the time, he was a 19-year-old UCLA star, and it was the lowest PGA Tour round ever by an amateur.

Recent Changes

On the subject of low scores, something the Travelers Championship is known for, Keegan Bradley set a new tournament scoring record in 2023.

That, and other low scores through the week, prompted Rory McIlroy to say: "Unfortunately technology has passed this course by, right? It sort of has made it obsolete, especially as soft as it has been with a little bit of rain that we had.

"So, again, like the conversations going back to, you know, limiting the golf ball and stuff like that, when we come to courses like this they just don't present the challenge that they used to."

After taking feedback from other golfers, changes were made to holes 1, 6, 9, 11, 12 and 13.

Following the opening round of the 2025 Travelers Championship, McIlroy revealed he liked what he had seen from the changes. He said: “I've always liked this golf course. Yeah, I think the changes they've made have definitely been an improvement.”

A Front Row Seat

Living on TPC River Highlands may be the next best thing to playing it. Viewers of the Travelers Championship will notice the homes that famously line some of its holes.

They give residents a front-row seat to one of the PGA Tour's biggest events and some of the world's best golfers.

Honoring Golf's Heritage

Despite its modern status as a PGA Tour venue, TPC River Highlands retains a link to golf's Scottish heritage.

Each year, during the opening ceremony for the Travelers Championship, the sounds of bagpipes echo around the course, continuing a long-standing tradition that pays tribute to the game's origins.

From 2028, the PGA Tour is going to look very different. Plans unveiled in June 2026 show the historic US circuit is effectively going to be split into two tiers.

The top tier will be called the PGA Tour Championship Series and feature most of the game's very best talent on the most iconic courses and playing for the highest prize purses.

Meanwhile, the PGA Tour Challenger Series will be the step below and is set to provide pros with the opportunity to compete for plenty of money still while also offering them a platform to reach the top table.

In a press release at the time, CEO Brian Rolapp said: "From day one, the focus of the Future Competition Committee has been to build the best version of the PGA Tour, and to do so in a way that reflects the voice of our players and the expectations of our fans.

“The result is a new competitive model grounded in meritocracy, with clearer pathways, higher stakes and more consistency when the best players compete together. This model positions the PGA Tour for the future, and our focus now shifts to finalizing the details and preparing for implementation in 2028.”

But with details so fresh and many people unsure of what the two tiers will look like at this stage, we've listed all of the key details you need to know right here.

Below is everything you need to know about the PGA Tour Challenger Series.

PGA TOUR CHALLENGER SERIES EVENT STRUCTURE

As with the top tier, each regular event will be contested as a 72-hole stroke play competition, with the top-65 players (and ties) forming the cut after 36 holes.

Challenger Series fields will often consist of 144 players but allowances will be made to reduce that figure when necessary "due to constraints such as daylight."

Unlike the top tier, though, the PGA Tour doesn't appear to have ruled out sponsor exemptions being allowed on the Challenger Series.

Each tournament will feature a purse consisting of at least $4 million, and Golf Monthly understands that figure could well rise in the coming seasons.

As far as points go, the PGA Tour says the Challenger Series will "reward points in a consistent manner for all co-sanctioned events, while also rewarding elevated points for PGA Tour Challenger Series events contested in the PGA Tour Championship Series off weeks and Major championships."

HOW MANY EVENTS WILL THE PGA TOUR CHALLENGER SERIES HAVE?

The PGA Tour Challenger Series is set to include a minimum of 20 events per season, but that doesn't include the four Majors or The Players Championship - which are expected to take place in standalone weeks on the calendar.

The Championship Series is set to run from February through August, approximately, and the regular Challenger Series season will follow the same timeframe.

However, there won't be a Championship Series event on every single week during that time, with the PGA Tour wanting to give around seven Challenger Events increased exposure during Championship Series off weeks.

The PGA Tour says those specific tournaments will be "elevated with increased consequence, benefits and exposure."

Further details have not been disclosed at this stage, but we do know all Challenger Series tournaments are due to be staged at "distinguished venues that have traditionally hosted PGA Tour events."

WHO IS ELIGIBLE FOR PGA TOUR CHALLENGER SERIES?

The criteria and eligibility details for the PGA Tour's Challenger Series are currently very thin on the ground, with the subject due to be voted on later this year by the boards.

For the time being, all we know is that, similar to the current PGA Tour system, the Challenger Series will "feature a priority ranking set at the beginning of the season."

Said eligibility will consist of exempt members, who will have access to every Challenger Series event without question, and then conditional members who will help to complete fields.

20 players will be able to earn promotion to the Championship Series at the end of each season. In addition, if a player wins twice in one season on the Challenger Series or lands a Major, they will earn instant promotion to the top table.

There will be no requirement for PGA Tour Challenger Series players to participate in every event, but they will only be able to compete within that series and are not eligible to make any starts in the Championship Series.

Again, as it relates to the Korn Ferry Tour, eligibility is not known at this stage but the PGA Tour has said complete eligibility criteria for both the Championship and Challenger Series will be revealed before the start of the 2027 season.

PGA TOUR CHALLENGER SERIES POST-SEASON

Unlike the Championship Series, there is not expected to be a Playoff window on the Challenger Series. Instead, the top group of 20 players will earn instant promotion at a specific cut-off date.

However, the season won't be over in August for a lot of the Challenger Series pros.

Instead, there will be a 'Last Chance' series of four to six events in the fall with a "limited number" of spots on the PGA Tour Championship Series available for top finishers.

The line-up for those events will include players relegated from the PGA Tour Championship Series, a select number of PGA Tour Challenger Series players and other categories which the PGA Tour says are "to be determined."

HOW MANY EVENTS WILL THE PGA TOUR CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES HAVE?

The PGA Tour Championship Series is set to include 23-24 events per season, with that number including all four Majors, The Players Championship, the Playoffs and international team events - so either the Ryder Cup or Presidents Cup - as well as the Olympics starting in 2028.

The season is set to run from February through August, but there won't be an event on every single week. There are plans to ensure Challenger Series tournaments are given full exposure "at regular intervals." However, specific dates are not known at this stage.

Ten of the expected 15 events which are set to make up the regular season have already been lined up, and although it has not been confirmed which ones they are, it is fair to assume the most historic and prestigious tournaments will likely form that group.

The PGA Tour has revealed the remaining weeks could be filled by tournaments in new markets such as Boston, Denver, New York, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Seattle and Washington, D.C.

There will be no requirement for PGA Tour Championship Series players to participate in every event, but they will only be able to compete within the Championship Series and are not eligible to make any starts in the Challenger Series.

PGA TOUR CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES EVENT STRUCTURE

Each regular event in the Championship Series will be contested as a 72-hole stroke play competition, with the top-65 players (and ties) forming the cut after 36 holes.

The PGA Tour has also said there will be consideration in terms of that number for special formats - i.e. the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.

Championship Series fields will largely begin with around 120 players and there will be no alternate list, removing uncertainty for pros who might be on the bubble. There will also be no sponsor exemptions any more, with every player in the field qualifying off their own back.

Each tournament will also consist of a $20 million prize money purse, and Golf Monthly understands that figure could well rise in the coming seasons.

PGA TOUR CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES MEMBERSHIP

From 2028, the PGA Tour Championship Series will feature a minimum of 90 players who are retained from the prior season's points list.

There will also be 20 players promoted from the PGA Tour's Challenger Series, leaving only around 10 players to fill up a field. At this stage, details are still unclear in terms of which path they might come from, but there are currently 10 PGA Tour cards on offer via the DP World Tour, so it might be that all 10 come from there.

Alternatively, there might only be five from Europe and the remaining quintet could be sourced from the PGA Tour Americas and PGA Tour University rankings.

Full eligibility criteria is set to be finalized by the PGA Tour boards later this year, with select additional exemptions for categories like tournament winners, medical extensions and career milestones all decided. To reiterate, though, there will not be any sponsor exemptions on this tier from 2028.

PGA TOUR CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES POST-SEASON

Brian Rolapp said he wants the regular season points leader to be recognized properly ahead of the post-season, with more details on that to come.

For the time being, the Championship Series post-season will play a big part in who is retained and who is relegated for the following term.

Should players lose their spots by the end of the Championship Series post-season, they will have the chance to win it back in a 'Last Chance' series later in the year.

But before that happens, a new-look Tour Championship is set to occur. Not only with the Tour Championship rotate away from East Lake moving forward, but it is going to become a match play tournament from 2028.

Frustratingly, the PGA Tour has said "details on the format and expected location(s) will be provided at a later date," so we can only presume how it might shape up at this stage.

After the Tour Championship has concluded, the top players from the Championship Series will also be eligible for "a limited series of elevated international events" which take places towards the conclusion of the DP World Tour campaign.

Details regarding specific events will be confirmed at a later date in conjunction with the DP World Tour, but we do know prominent national open championships such as the Irish, French and Spanish Opens are expected to be a part of that.

The PGA Tour is set to look pretty different from the start of 2028, with the historic US-based circuit unveiling big, shiny new plans for a two-tier structure on Tuesday.

The idea is quite simple - there will be an elite tier called the Championship Series which features all of the PGA Tour's best players in 120-man fields in 23-24 events with a halfway cut and $20 million (minimum) prize purses.

Meanwhile, the Challenger Series will sit between the top level and the Korn Ferry Tour with 144-man fields competing in a similar number of tournaments but for at least $4 million every time.

Many of the finer details still need ironing out, according to new PGA Tour commissioner and existing CEO Brian Rolapp, but the idea is that at least 90 players will hold Championship Series status every year with 20 or more earning promotion from the Challenger Series.

Unsurprisingly, the most prestigious tournaments will sit on the top tier alongside The Players and the Majors with the biggest markets serving the brightest stars.

In addition, there are big changes coming to the Playoffs, too. The Tour Championship is switching to a match play format and will cycle away from East Lake in a bid to keep things fresh.

Overall, Rolapp says the new-look PGA Tour has been designed this way with meritocracy at the forefront and a desire to innovate in order to breathe new life into the circuit.

The early signs of the Future Competition Committee's big, sweeping upheaval of the PGA Tour pointed to some drastic changes, but in reality it doesn't seem like there will be too much of a difference to what we see now, with far too many tournaments and an over-saturation.

There are plenty of positives, though, like getting rid of no-cut, small-field events. I am glad the PGA Tour has listened to the criticism of these. The Tour Championship moving to match play also sounds exciting, as does the potential of playing some of America's greatest courses.

I am disappointed to see purses remain at $20m+ following the Saudi PIF withdrawing from LIV Golf, though. That was a great chance for a reset and the Tour to reduce the ridiculous sums players are earning.

There are still lots of unknowns so it is tough to get too excited. Rolapp essentially said the job has been to organize the tour into a more simple system for fans to follow and ultimately I think that will be achieved.

So what do I think? I think it sounds... good. I am interested to hear more and hopeful Rolapp can deliver on his promises, especially around courses.

I'm a big fan of the new schedule. The removal of Signature Events and the introduction of a second tier make a huge amount of sense to me.

I also like that winning twice on the second tier – the Challenger Series – is the only way to get a promotion to the Championship Series during the season.

There are no sponsors' invites or places available through things like the Aon Swing 5 - you either qualify for the top tier or you wait another season. This creates genuine jeopardy if you're at risk of falling outside the top 90 on the Championship circuit.

I also like the introduction of match-play in the play-offs. Essentially, the new structure creates a clearly defined extra level between the Korn Ferry Tour and the Championship Series, which makes things easier from a logistical standpoint and creates a clear pathway to the top.

It also sounds like some 'Fall' events might be co-sanctioned with the DP World Tour, hopefully seeing some top American players coming to Europe during the autumn months.

Given the news has not long broken, I'm still processing it, but here are my initial thoughts on the whole situation.

I'm not sure I love the fact there will be two PGA Tours (even though many would argue that has been the case for a while now).

I think it would have made more sense to add another separate tour in below the PGA Tour and call it something else, so effectively relegate the Korn Ferry Tour to the third tier and either renegotiate that sponsorship deal with them or tweak the contract to give Korn Ferry the naming rights for this new second tier.

Practically, I'm thinking this two-tier system creates confusion in regards to filing wins as well.

Will every victory be titled PGA Tour wins even though they're clearly not the same standard? What if Tiger Woods is able to come back and he wins a Challenger Series event? Does he now have sole possession of the all-time record for PGA Tour wins?

On a different note, I wanted a match play event back, but making the Tour Championship a match play tournament is an awfully bold decision. Is it the right one? Only time will tell, but I'm sure it had been suggested before and not many liked it. So what's changed?

Overall, I do think the general changes are good ones and I'm excited to see how it plays once 2028 rolls around, but there are so many unknowns still at this stage my mind may well change by the turn of this year.

The PGA Tour unveiled a new-look 2028 re-brand where two tours will run concurrently.

The top tier has the working title of the 'PGA Tour Championship Series', which will sit above the 'PGA Tour Challenger Series'.

Each tier will be completely separate with their own points lists and a set relegation/promotion system.

On the face of it, this is a huge change to the PGA Tour and an exciting one for fans. But when you look closely it appears there won't actually be too much difference - as the PGA Tour has been becoming more of a two-tier system anyway since the introduction of Signature Events.

Brian Rolapp even admitted it when speaking to media at the Travelers Championship.

"I think the best way to think about what we're doing here is that right now we have 47 events at the PGA Tour. We'll have 47 events going forward. That current model serves roughly 230 players. We'll serve that amount of players, the same," Rolapp said.

"We are just organized now in a more simple understanding competitively so our fans can understand it, our partners know what they're getting as far as value.

"So we think we've just organized the same tour into a much more interesting and competitive system."

So instead of wholesale changes, the 2028 PGA Tour will be a more simplified version that is easier for fans to understand. It doesn't exactly sound groundbreaking, but the signs are promising.

What will be new about the regular season?

The key change in the regular season will be the introduction of cuts in every single event with fields made up of 120 players.

This essentially removes the current Signature Event model and will create more fairness.

Rolapp stressed meritocracy is key, and another way of delivering on that promise is by removing sponsor's exemptions for the Championship Series.

I have written countless times about how unfair Signature Events are, and sponsor's exemptions are a big part of that.

A player ranked outside of the world's top 100 has received multiple sponsor's exemptions this year, all the while Aaron Rai, who was ranked inside the world's top 50, had not been eligible for the big events prior to winning a Major.

Rai then won the PGA Championship, which proves to me that sponsor's exemptions for the big $20m events were simply not fair. Thankfully, the PGA Tour agrees.

Every regular season event will also carry purses of $20m, as Golf Monthly reported recently.

Another notable change could be in regards to the courses we see on the schedule.

"I think the goal is to go to prestigious courses that we're not there a lot, that fans will recognize as prestigious," Rolapp said.

"We're also not above building things on our own. I think one of the most successful tournaments in the world, you can't argue it, is The Players Championship. That was a course that was built for that event. That's certainly on the table.

"But I think there are plenty of great golf courses in this country that we'd like to get to."

No new tournaments, markets or venues have been announced as of yet, though. An ESPN report cites Pine Valley, Cypress Point and Seminole as potentials. Now that is exciting.

So aside from every event being a 120-man field tournament with a cut and the potential for some new locations, there really isn't much else to report about the new regular season.

It has to be said that there are plenty of unknowns, with Rolapp giving multiple non-answers when fielding questions from reporters at TPC River Highlands today.

Postseason changes

The other big change comes with the 'postseason', with match play set to be introduced at the Tour Championship.

The season-ending event is also set to rotate away from Atlanta's East Lake Country Club, which has hosted every year since 2004.

It's fair to say the PGA Tour is still yet to get its Tour Championship right and it remains to be seen how match play goes down. It certainly sounds promising.

The PGA Tour also says it wants to continue working with the DP World Tour by partnering on "prominent national opens" in the fall.

The PGA Tour has already announced its involvement with the Australian Open, but it remains to be seen which other national opens it partners with. The Irish Open, French Open and Spanish Open are all currently held on the DP World Tour in the fall.

There is also set to be a 4-6 event 'last chance' fall series, which to me is just a re-brand of the current FedEx Cup Fall - which is by far the PGA Tour's weakest stretch.

Players will have the chance to secure their status on the top-tier Championship Series, which sounds similar to how players can currently earn their status for the PGA Tour in these postseason tournaments.

Unknowns from the PGA Tour's new 2028 structure...

When Rolapp announced sweeping changes in March, that was step one. This is step two, and his third press conference will come in August at the Tour Championship.

He promised he will announce more about the Playoffs then, and he will also surely announce more details for the entire structure at that time, too.

Full eligibility criteria will be known by the start of the 2027 season to ensure PGA Tour players know exactly what it will take to qualify for both the Championship and Challenger Series in 2028.

There are plenty of unknowns as things stand, including...

The DP World Tour

Eligibility criteria remains unknown, and a big part of that will involve how the PGA and DP World Tours continue their partnership.

It's fair to say the PGA Tour is getting the better part of the Strategic Alliance deal, with the DP World Tour significantly weaker than its US counterpart from February to August, barring the co-sanctioned Scottish Open.

As things stand, the circuits run co-sanctioned tournaments together and also have a formal pathway where ten DP World Tour players earn PGA Tour cards each season.

If this continues, will the DP World Tour players all earn cards for the top tier?

Or could it be 5 to the Championship Series and five to the Challenger? It remains to be seen, like many other things.

Tournaments

We can almost certainly assume the current Signature Events will continue on the Championship Series.

There are eight Signature Events as things stand, nine if you add in The Sentry, which will now be played at Torrey Pines, so that leaves just six more as there will be 15 regular events, four Majors, The Players Championship, the Playoffs and either the Ryder or Presidents Cup on the proposed 2028 schedule.

Which six those events be is going to be very interesting.

There may well be new tournaments in that number, too, with the Tour seeking to go to new, bigger markets in the US.

Can players play down?

As in, can a Championship Series player go and play a tournament they like on the Challenger Series? At the moment it's a firm 'no', but I can see a scenario where players are allowed one tournament per year where they're allowed to play in an event that's special to them, like one in their hometown or one they've previously won.

"I think we talked a lot about that. Again, I think it's important to zoom out and look at what we're trying to accomplish. We're trying to build the best competitive model we can for our members and for fans and ultimately for our partners," Rolapp said.

"By definition, we're not going to fulfill every preference of every stakeholder. I think that's impossible. But I think what we can do is build something bigger than ourselves, and that's one of the trade-offs I think we'd have to consider.

"But we believe that having this Championship Series and delivering to fans the best golfers week in and week out is a goal worth pursuing, and that's the larger ideal. So we work through it."

LIV Golfers

Where could Bryson DeChambeau, Jon Rahm and other LIV players fit in if they wish to return or the circuit folds? Rolapp did not have much to say.

"I read what you read on LIV. I'm not sure what the future of that is or those players," he said.

"They're under contract, and until that's no longer the case, I don't think we need to overly worry about it. We're focused on the PGA Tour."

There are likely many more unknowns at this stage. Rolapp's address at the Tour Championship will reveal much more - stay tuned.

The PGA Tour has today unveiled plans for its future two-tier structure, which includes promotion and relegation, a match-play format for the Playoffs, the end of Signature Events in their current guise and the removal of sponsor's exemptions in the biggest tournaments.

Previously referred to as Track One and Track Two when Brian Rolapp initially proposed his plans at The Players Championship in March, the official names will be the PGA Tour Championship Series and the PGA Tour Challenger Series.

The new structure is set to come in for the 2028 season.

These plans were 'approved' by the PGA Tour Boards on Monday, the circuit confirmed, and created by the Tiger Woods-chaired Future Competition Committee.

The FCC had three strategic priorities:

• Increasing the consistency and quality of fields across the season
• Creating a clear system for players to earn and retain status
• Delivering a more structured and competitive experience for fans and partners

PGA Tour Championship Series

The top-tier Championship Series will consist of 23-24 tournaments, including the flagship Players Championship, the four Majors, the Playoffs and either the Ryder or Presidents Cup, with the season running from February to August.

All 'Championship Series' tournaments will feature 36-hole cuts with fields of 120 players and purses at a minimum of $20m. There will be no sponsor's exemptions or alternates list.

Membership for the top tier will be a minimum of 90 players retained from the previous year and 20 players promoted from the Challenger Series.

The Championship Series already has ten of its 15 regular events agreed for 2028, the PGA Tour said, with the remaining events to be "filled by existing events or new markets under consideration such as Boston, Denver, New York, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Seattle and Washington, D.C."

The 'new-look Tour Championship' will be hosted at a "rotation of prestigious courses, many of which the PGA Tour would play for the first time."

This means current host East Lake in Atlanta, Georgia will no longer be the exclusive home of the FedEx Cup season-ender. A match play format has been approved by the Boards.

PGA Tour Challenger Series

The second-tier Challenger Series, which Rory McIlroy described as a "glorified Korn Ferry Tour" at last week's US Open, will run concurrently to the Championship Series and feature a minimum of 20 events.

The Tour says it will be "highly competitive and lucrative" and visit courses that traditionally host on the PGA Tour.

There will be approximately seven weeks where the Challenger Series is the only event run by the PGA Tour, and those tournaments will be "elevated with increased consequence, benefits and exposure."

The Challenger Series will feature purses of at least $4m and fields of 144 players.

20 players will be promoted from the Challenger Series up to the main Championship Series each year, while two wins will also see players automatically promoted.

Routes to the second-tier Challenger Series have not been confirmed yet. Those routes will include the DP World Tour, Korn Ferry Tour and the PGA Tour University.

There will also still be a fall schedule, which will feature "a limited series of elevated international events," while there will also be a "last chance" domestic series of 4-6 tournaments where the top finishers can qualify for the top-tier Championship Series.

The tour will continue to run a Q-school, where Challenger Series spots will be on the line as well as cards for its developmental tours, i.e the Korn Ferry Tour and PGA Tour Americas.

Additional details will be evaluated and presented to the Boards later this year for approval, the PGA Tour said.

Rory McIlroy has somewhat slimmed down his PGA Tour schedule in 2026, with the six-time Major winner set to skip another tournament during a busy period of golf.

Following on from this week's US Open, many of the world's best will head to the Travelers Championship, the final Signature Event of the PGA Tour season.

Providing players with a $20 million purse, as well as plenty of FedEx Cup points, McIlroy won't be present at TPC River Highlands, meaning he has only played in five of the eight Signature Events.

Opting to skip the RBC Heritage and Cadillac Championship, the Travelers Championship is another tournament that McIlroy won't compete in, adding to the list of missed events compared to 2025.

Last year, the 37-year-old also played the Texas Children's Houston Open, Zurich Classic of New Orleans and RBC Canadian Open, but they weren't on his schedule for 2026.

He also made the trip to the Travelers Championship following that year's US Open, where he finished T6th, but that won't be the case this season.

As of writing, it appears his next start will be the Genesis Scottish Open on July 9-13th, which takes place the week before The Open Championship.

In fairness to McIlroy, it shouldn't come as much of a surprise, with the 30-time PGA Tour winner stating back in August: "I'll always look at the schedule at the start of the year and see what best fits me and my life, and everything else that I do with family or other opportunities that I'm pursuing outside of golf."

He went on to add "this year that meant skipping a few signature events. (Next year) I might skip less, I might skip the same amount.

"The luxury of being a PGA Tour player is we're free to pick and choose our own schedule for the most part. I took advantage of that this year and I'll continue to take advantage of that for as long as I can."

His comments were backed up at The Memorial Tournament, where he explained that he will continue to "pick and choose" where he plays on a limited schedule regardless of what a new PGA Tour season looks like.

Admitting that he felt like "a bit like a part-timer" as he returned to action at Muirfield Village, the US Open is just his ninth start of 2026.

Making his golf-life balance a priority, McIlroy used his time after the PGA Championship to settle into a new house in London.

Schedule-wise, McIlroy is also set to continue playing DP World Tour events following the conclusion of the PGA Tour season.

He is already listed in the field for the Amgen Irish Open, BMW PGA Championship, DP World India Championship and Australian Open, as he looks to equal Colin Montgomerie's record of eight Race to Dubai victories.

At the Travelers Championship, Scottie Scheffler will headline the field, as Keegan Bradley returns to defend his title that he won by a single stroke via a final hole birdie.

Wyndham Clark, the 2023 US Open champion, goes into the final round leading by six strokes. If Clark does not win, he will have created unwelcome history.

Format

The final US Open field is 156-strong, whittled down, through local and final qualifying and exemptions, from the 10,201 golfers who entered. (Any golfer, professional or amateur, whose Handicap Index® does not exceed 0.4. was able to enter.)

The tournament is played as a 72-hole strokeplay event with a 36-hole cut to the low 60 and ties. In the event of a tie for the lead after 72 holes, a two-hole aggregate playoff will take place following on from the conclusion of the fourth round. If still level after this, the playoff is continued as sudden death.

Were Scheffler to win, he would become the seventh man to complete the career Grand Slam of all four Major titles. But he has not won a tournament since January.

Rory McIlroy completed the Grand Slam last year, and he already has a Major win this season, at the Masters, where Scheffler was runner up. Rory’s first Major win was at the US Open in 2011, but he is yet to win it again. Last season’s T19 finish in this event was the first time in seven years he had not been in the top 10, and he was runner up in 2023 and 2024.

Shinnecock Hills opened in 1891 and is the only course to host US Opens in the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries.

The last time the US Open was here, in 2018, Brooks Koepka won, at one over par. The runner up was Tommy Fleetwood. The popular Englishman has yet to win a Major, but set the course record 63 in the final round that year.

Brooks Koepka’s win at Shinnecock Hills gave him back-to-back US Open titles. JJ Spaun will be hoping history repeats, having won at Oakmont Country Club last year.

Scottie Scheffler insists completing the career Grand Slam "has never been a motivating factor for me" as he looks to join the exclusive club by winning the US Open.

The World No.1 catapulted himself into the Grand Slam picture by winning the PGA Championship and The Open last year to add to his two Masters titles and move just one win away from joining golf's immortals.

Scheffler is looking to join Rory McIlroy and become the seventh man to win the career Grand Slam but unlike McIlroy he'd like to get the job done at the first attempt at Shinnecock Hills this week.

But he insists that chasing history is not what drives him on, as he tries to ease the pressure on himself.

"For me, would it be a dream to win the US Open? Of course," said Scheffler. "But at the end of the day, the Grand Slam has never been a motivating factor for me. I always just wanted to be the best version of myself, and that got me this far."

McIlroy mentioned after he won the Grand Slam about having that feeling of what to do next after climbing his Everest - and that's something Scheffler is acutely aware of, hence why he's trying to not make it his main goal in golf.

"If I win this tournament, that would be amazing, but I think then I show up the next week, and it's like, okay, now Scottie's won the Grand Slam, he's won all these golf tournaments. Now where do we go from here?

"I think as a player and as a professional athlete, you're never going to live up to the expectations of people. I think sometimes that's a little bit of the fallacy in our sport is like, if I win the US Open, then I'm going to be satisfied.

"I've won all the tournaments, and my career is essentially over, and I've accomplished everything I could want to accomplish. But I think the goal posts are always just moved further and further."

No fear of failure key for Scheffler success

Scheffler has always insisted he's not defined by his golfing success, and he again offered an insight into his perspective on his sport - which may explain why he manages to keep such an even keel in the heat of battle.

"Golf is such a funny game. A good example this week, if I finish second this week, it's almost like, hey, you failed in your first chance to win the career Grand Slam," said Scheffler. "It's kind of, like, is finishing second a failure?

"It can feel that way, but I think sometimes when you look at more of kind of a wider view of the sport and where your game's at, second is not always that bad, but man, does it frickin' hurt at the same time.

"So you can feel like a failure in this sport oftentimes just because you're not winning, and I think that's just part of it. That's why I said I try not to focus too much on my successes or my failures, one, because you get beat up an awful lot in this game. It's a tough sport.

"But, two, if I was feeling so good about all my successes, I probably wouldn't be too much fun to be around either."

Scheffler has already come close at the US Open, finishing in the top seven in four of the last five years so he can rightly fancy his chances at Shinnecock - as he expected the Open Championship would've been the hardest Major for him to win.

"I always felt like The Open would be one of the hardest ones for me to win because I didn't have a lot of experience playing over there in the UK," Scheffler explained.

"Growing up, I played a lot of golf here in the States. I didn't really play much internationally at all. For me, not having the experience on links golf, I would have said that would probably be the most difficult for me to win.

"I always had self-belief. I always believed that I could win golf tournaments out here. I always had that belief in myself that I could accomplish some nice things in the game of golf."

Rory McIlroy is not so sure that all the upcoming PGA Tour changes will actually make it that much better - and fears some decent tournaments will become "a glorified Korn Ferry event" under the new two-tier system.

The Grand Slam winner believes LIV Golf "created this false economy" within the sport, with the PGA Tour forced to react by increasing prize money and creating Signature Events in order to keep its best players.

Now LIV Golf is searching for funding to continue, with any new iteration certain to have a big drop in prize money - but despite that the PGA Tour has seemingly no intention of dropping it's prize money structure.

So with LIV's big-money threat lessened and the atmosphere calmer, McIlroy can't help wondering if the old PGA Tour system wasn't actually so bad after all.

"LIV created this false economy where we had to up prize funds and had to cut fields and try to support the top players and all that stuff," said McIlroy at the US Open.

"Which I think needed to happen because that was the only way to retain talent at the time, but now that LIV looks like it's less of a threat, I think the old ways of the PGA Tour weren't actually that bad."

McIlroy is "not in those rooms" within the PGA Tour as decisions are being made about the future, in a big change to the height of the LIV Golf saga when Jay Monahan seemingly sent him out to be the organisation's big defender.

Now McIlroy is looking at it from slightly afar, and says he's starting to think the way the PGA Tour was setup before all the LIV Golf wars could have actually been the best.

"I play my schedule, and I'll continue to play my schedule, which is getting less and less as the years go on," he insisted.

"Yeah, it's funny. I think, as they've done all this work, you start to realize that the way the Tour was before LIV came along was actually pretty good. It was a pretty good structure, and everything sort of worked pretty well."

McIlroy warns of 'glorified Korn Ferry Tour' events

One of McIlroy's main concerns is with some current events on the PGA Tour seeing their status reduced under the new two-tier system set to be deployed by Brian Rolapp.

The six-time Major champion cites the recent RBC Canadian Open as a prime example, with his worry that such a historic national open, along with other similar events, could be diminished unless it receives a huge sponsorship boost.

"I guess like at an event - I guess, just recency, an event like last week, the Canadian Open, potentially going to one of these track twos," McIlroy added.

"Track two is a glorified Korn Ferry event. That's what track two is going to be. So I don't think the Canadian Open should be one of those.

"I just think there's going to be certain events that might lose their stature if a sponsor doesn't pony up $30 million. So that's the tough thing."

If any LIV Golf players are to follow Brooks Koepka and Patrick Reed back to the PGA Tour they should start "at the bottom of the barrel" according to Tom Lehman - and that includes Bryson DeChambeau.

Koepka was allowed to return immediately, with a $5m fine and some other financial restraints placed upon him in terms of FedEx Cup pool bonuses and equity in the PGA Tour.

Reed has to play a longer game, though he is eligible to return on August, 12 months from his last start on LIV Golf - but neither way is palatable to 1996 Open champion Lehman.

The former USA Ryder Cup captain believes that any player who left the PGA Tour to play on LIV should have to start right at the bottom again and work their way back up the pecking order.

Lehman told Garrett Johnston that returning players should come back "without any kind of status whatsoever“ and insisted they must start "at the bottom of the barrel".

“Get in line behind the Tour School," said Lehman. “Or better yet send them to Korn Ferry Tour.

"To leave and just come back and play at any point is just wrong. Totally against that. I think that’s a terrible idea to let the guys who were not loyal to the PGA Tour leave and just walk back with nothing but a slap on the wrist, and then a let’s go boys. I think that’s just wrong.

“Start over, earn your way back. That’s what I would do."

LIV Golf CEO Scott O'Neill is still chasing down financial backers to replace the Saudi PIF when it pulls funding at the end of the season - so the league remains in a state of flux until anything official comes to light.

So players will be busy weighing up their options should LIV fail to find funding, or not find enough to keep prize funds anywhere near the level they currently are.

It could lead to some wanting to return to the PGA Tour, but just how that would work is anyone's guess, with Brian Rolapp keeping his options open.

Even Bryson should start at the bottom

Lehman's thoughts have been echoed by plenty on the PGA Tour, but Rolapp knows that big names would bolster their product, and as shown with Koepka return pathways are likely to be on a case-by-case basis.

It seems obvious that someone like a Bryson DeChambeau would be welcomed back almost immediately - maybe on a simialr deal to Koepka - but not if Lehman had his way.

"I don’t care what your status is," said Lehman, who would treat even DeChambeau, one of his favorite players, the same as everyone else.

“I love Bryson. One of my favorites. He’s good enough where if you put him in that position he’ll work his way back up.

"But to put [Bryson] above guys who have loyally stayed with the Tour I think is wrong.”

In a thrilling final day, it was Bud Cauley who secured the win, as the American claimed a maiden PGA Tour title on his 239th start.

Firing a five-under 65, it was the back nine on Sunday that proved to be the difference for the American, as his putter fired and birdies fell for a two stroke victory.

The win was an emotional one for Cauley. Back in 2018, he suffered five broken ribs, a broken left leg and a collapsed lung due to a car crash, with his return to professional golf not coming until 2024.

Prior to the start of the final round, Jackson Suber led the field and, although he held his advantage throughout the front nine, it was the back nine where the momentum swung.

Birdieing the eighth, three birdies on the bounce from the 11th, 12th and 13th was the catalyst for Cauley to push on, as a birdie at the 15th moved him four strokes clear with just three holes remaining.

Matt Fitzpatrick, who holds three wins in 2026, set the target at 15-under, but his total was a few shots shy, with Cauley finishing par-bogey-par to fire a 17-under total.

Earning a two shot win, a visibly emotional Cauley stated: "So many people helped me get here and I'm really thankful for the help that I have got over the years.

"Once I got the opportunity to start playing again I just told myself that I'm going to try and do everything the right way and give myself the best chance.

"I put my wife, Christie, through so much during those dark times and I hope this success is a bit of a thank you."

A FAMILY WIN

Just four days before Brooks Koepka is due to tee it up in the US Open in pursuit of his third title at the Major, he has withdrawn from the final round of the RBC Canadian Open with a hand injury.

While the timing is concerning, given how close the US Open is, it is to be hoped his decision not to take part in the final round at TPC Toronto is precautionary so as not to aggravate the injury, which he picked up on Saturday.

Following the third round, where Koepka carded a two-over 72 to fall out of contention, he explained he had been struggling with gripping his club throughout the day.

He explained: “Yeah, I don't know what it is. I'm struggling to grip the club with my ring finger and pinkie finger, so can't grip it.

"So the club is kind of just, my fingers would come loose, it was kind of numb. I don't know what the deal was but hopefully we'll figure it out."

Koepka, who received some treatment for the issue at the 11th tee box, added: "Yeah, the whole warm-up, I felt fine, I was absolutely good. Then got to the range and went to grip the club and I just couldn't even grip it.

"So it lasted - it was all day. Felt better the last few holes. I don't know if that's just the meds kicked in or what it is. But hopefully we'll figure it out now."

Koepka, who resumed his PGA Tour career at the start of the year after four seasons with LIV Golf, has been finding some encouraging form in recent weeks.

That included T11 at the ONEflight Myrtle Beach Classic and T14 at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson.

Before his injury at TPC Toronto, he had been set for an even better finish after rounds of 64 and 68 kept him in the hunt before his issues on Saturday led to him dropping out of the top 30.

He will be hoping the treatment he receives for the injury over the coming days means he will be ready to go for the first round of the US Open on Thursday, particularly as it is being held at the scene of his second triumph at the Major, Shinnecock Hills.

Haotong Li was firmly in contention at the halfway point of the RBC Canadian Open.

The Chinese star shot rounds of 67 and 64 at TPC Toronto to sit just one back of leader Ben James in a tie for second in pursuit of his maiden PGA Tour title.

On his bag this week is one of the game’s big characters, Joel Dahmen’s former caddie Geno Bonnalie, who is standing in for Li’s regular looper Jady De Beer.

Following his second round, Li explained why he has brought Bonnalie on board this week – and what he’s already added to the position.

He said: “Yeah, shoutout to him as well because my own caddie couldn't make it to Canada because of visa issues.

“So Geno's very, very good on some of the club selections. It was incredible, to be fair. There's definitely three or four shots that he saved. I asked him, ‘Do you like this one?’ But he talked me into changing to the other one, and it actually worked out very well, so he's a good caddie.”

Bonnalie was the long-term caddie for his best friend Dahmen, with the pair shooting to prominence as they won the hearts of golf fans in the first two series of Netflix’s Full Swing.

However, the two parted ways in 2025 after a decade-long partnership, with Dahmen explaining: “We’re still the best of friends and that will never change. But we both know that a fresh perspective is sometimes needed and it’s been a great run.

“I couldn’t be more proud of what we have achieved together as guys from a small town in the middle of nowhere.”

Following the split, Bonnalie began caddying for Isaiah Salinda, although he has since linked up with Dahmen temporarily again, most notably at The Players Championship.

It’s not just Bonnalie’s influence that appears to be helping LI in Canada. The 30-year-old, who has struggled for much of the season, also explained he has been taking advice from his psychologist.

He said: “I've been struggling for two months. I missed like one or two cuts in a row for like probably eight events already. And I felt like I played quite decent.

“To be honest, the way I hit off the tee is just the same as today, but somehow just on the last five, six holes on a Friday it's always happening. So I need to speak to my psychologist and she said, ‘Once that bad Haotong comes in, you just tell him to go away.’ Which is what I did today, like, even on the back nine, that guy's there.”

He added: “I literally not even don't think, I literally just tell that guy, f*** off, leave me alone. I'm sorry about my language, but, that's what it is, yeah.”

There have been many big name winners of the RBC Canadian Open and, going into the weekend, Ben James is looking to add his name to the roll of honor.

Making his professional debut this week, the American accepted PGA Tour membership after he finished top of the 2026 PGA Tour University Ranking, and is making the most of it following an excellent amateur career.

Sitting 10-under after 36 holes, James is top of a leaderboard that is filled with a mix of experience and youth.

Ryder Cup stars Sam Burns, Brooks Koepka and Tommy Fleetwood are all inside the top 10 and within two shots, while Haotong Li and Jackson Suber are among a congested group in second.

For the third round, players will be in pairs at TPC Toronto, for what promises to be an exciting Moving Day in Canada.

James and Burns are off at 1.45pm (EDT), while Robert MacIntyre and Shane Lowry at 12.10pm and Ryan Fox and Koepka at 1.15pm will also be popular on the ground.

Brooks Koepka finally found the key to putting just in time for his US Open return to Shinnecock Hills, as he produced a stellar opening two rounds on the greens at the RBC Canadian Open.

He's been desperately searching for an answer to his putting woes, switching flat sticks a few times, but with a new model of putter bedding in nicely, a change of mental approach seemed to unlock his potential just in time for the US Open.

Koepka is the defending US Open champion at Shinnecock Hills, where he won his second successive title in 2018, following on from his breakthrough win 12 months earlier at Erin Hills.

And judging by the last two US Opens held at Shinnecock, it's a course where your putting needs to be right on point to survive.

The 36-year-old has been one of the elite ball strikers on the PGA Tour since his return from LIV Golf, but he's been held back by his putting struggles - if he can put it all together again then watch out for him at Shinnecock.

After chopping and changing flat sticks, a switch to a mallett at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson looks to have done the trick, judging by his efforts at the RBC Canadian Open.

Koepka had two good rounds and two bad rounds at the Byron Nelson, but produced a superb first round in Toronto on the greens - holing 108 feet of putts and gaining 3.491 strokes putting.

He followed that up with 3.380 Strokes Gained: Putting in the second round with over 112 feet of putts holed, to see Koepka in unfamiliar territory as the No.1 ranked putter in the field at the Canadian Open.

After entering the tournament 136th in Strokes Gained: Putting on the PGA Tour, it was a huge turnaround for Koepka after previously only managing to pick up strokes on the greens in two of his past six starts.

Conversely, Koepka came to Canada as the best ball striker in the field in the last three months, with a long game he felt was more than good enough to challenge for wins - but being scuppered by his putter.

"I've played great this year," said Koepka. "It's just the putting that's held me back.

"I just need that putter to heat up. I feel like I’ve been knocking on the door playing good enough to win, playing good enough to have a chance on Sunday, it’s just been the putter that’s holding me back.

"It was just a culmination of kind of freeing the mind. If you just change one thing, move the ball position back a little bit with the putter and kind of help be free up the mechanical side of it and not really think of anything other than just have it slightly a bit back of where it's been."

Koepka has said for a while that his game was near to its best again, aside from his putting, but if he has now truly found his form on the putting surfaces then he'll be one to watch back on familiar territory at the US Open.

The RBC Canadian Open takes place the week prior to the third men's Major of 2026 and, at the halfway stage, a number of interesting stories have begun to occur.

Ben James, who accepted PGA Tour membership after he finished top of the 2026 PGA Tour University Ranking, is making his professional debut in Toronto, and has been the star man after 36 holes.

Carding a 67 and seven-under 63, the American is 10-under, one clear going into the weekend, where several big names won't be joining him.

Tommy Fleetwood, Brooks Koepka and Shane Lowry aren't among that group, as they made it comfortably inside the two-under cutline, but fellow players weren't so lucky.

Aaron Rai (-1)

Making his second appearance since claiming the PGA Championship in May, Rai could only card rounds of 69 and 70 to miss the cut by one.

Bogeying the penultimate hole, birdies at the 16th and 18th weren't enough to save the Englishman from missing the weekend, as Rai was one of 14 players to finish one-under, which also included Matt Wallace and Garrick Higgo.

Corey Conners (E)

Although he had the home support behind him, Conners was unable to capitalize in his home country, as he fired rounds of 71 and 69 to finish level-par.

Despite sending the fans home happy with a closing eagle on Friday, it's the Canadian's second missed cut of 2026, previously missing the weekend at the WM Phoenix Open.

Nicolai Hojgaard (+2)

Having missed the cut at The Memorial Tournament, Hojgaard was looking to bounce back this week in Canada, but ended his event with another missed weekend.

Firing a one-under 69 on Thursday, a three-over 73 on Friday, which included three double bogeys, meant the former Ryder Cup player ended two-over and well back of the cutline.

Justin Rose (+2)

Securing T10th and T12th results at the PGA Championship and The Memorial Tournament, Rose came into the RBC Canadian Open as one of the favorites.

However, on Thursday and Friday, the Major winner struggled as rounds of 70 and 72 gave Rose a two-over total, joining 11 players on that number.

Alex Noren (+5)

Carding a level-par first round of 70, there was work to be done for Noren on Friday, but the Swede was unable to capitalize, as a five-over 75 meant he comfortably missed the cut.

Producing two birdies, 10 pars, five bogeys and a double, Noren missed his third cut of 2026 and his first since the Farmers Insurance Open back in late-January.

PGA Tour prize money in the biggest events is not expected to return to former levels, regardless of what happens to the LIV Golf League, Golf Monthly understands.

The PGA Tour introduced consistent $20 million prize money payouts back in 2022 in response to LIV Golf being born, having previously operated four $12 million tournaments as its most lucrative events outside of the Majors, The Players Championship and FedEx Cup Playoffs.

Since 2022, there have been at least eight $20 million Signature Events during every regular season, making up a total purse of around half a billion dollars each year if the Majors, FedEx Cup Playoffs and FedEx Cup Fall are all taken into account as well.

However, the future of the men's pro golf is very much up in the air right now with a new-look PGA Tour on the way and the fate of LIV Golf reportedly on a knife's edge.

LIV is preparing to lose its financial backing from Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund at the end of the 2026 season and officials from the team-golf circuit are currently in the process of attempting to find alternative support.

Regardless of whether they manage it or not, it is understood the PGA Tour has no plans to reduce its tournament purses in track one events moving forward. That's despite reports suggesting the number of Signature Events is set to be upped from nine to 16 as early as 2028.

Meanwhile, track two purse levels are currently unknown as details continue to be thrashed out, but it is expected total player compensation across the Tour will continue to see progression in the coming years once final numbers are agreed.

That is perhaps no surprise given the recent multi-billion dollar investment by the Strategic Sports Group, which is due to help with the PGA Tour's growth in the United States and across the rest of the world.

Central to where the SSG's money is directed will be the PGA Tour's Future Competition Committee, which is chaired by Tiger Woods and features three members of the SSG as well as PGA Tour pros Patrick Cantlay, Adam Scott, Camillo Villegas, Maverick McNealy and Keith Mitchell.

The FCC has long proclaimed one of its primary goals is to work towards building a "sustainable competitive and commercial model" that brings long-term success, and publicly available figures show the historic US circuit is in an extremely healthy position already.

The total prize money figure for the past five full PGA Tour seasons - not including the Majors or Tour Championship due to its switch from bonus money to official money - has jumped from nearly $368 million in 2022 to just over $450 million in each of the four subsequent campaigns.

Within that, the average figure fields are playing for in full FedEx Cup events is trending upwards, although the same number in FedEx Cup Fall tournaments has dipped by around 25%.

Nevertheless, the average payout in PGA Tour events overall has changed from just under $9 million in 2022 to $11 million or above in each of the four seasons since.
