How to nominate your pro

Fifteen years ago we launched the inaugural list of our Top 25 Coaches.

With help from Dr Paul Schempp, a performance expert, University of Georgia professor and the man behind Golf Magazine’s Top 100 US Coaches, we went through a rigorous process to find the 25 we felt were the best.

Now, we need your help. Is your coach one of the best in the UK?

To nominate someone for inclusion, please send an email of no more than 300 words to golfmonthly@futurenet.com explaining why you believe your coach should be considered.

Please remember to include the coach’s name, contact details and location and title the email ‘Golf Monthly Top Coaches 2021’. This must be submitted by August 22 2021.

After an initial vetting, we will send selected coaches a questionnaire designed by Dr Schempp.

Once they are returned, the judging process will begin. We will reveal the new list of Golf Monthly Top Coaches in an upcoming edition of the magazine.

Through its’ expert, engaging content, the brand regularly speaks to millions of golfers about the game they love. As part of Golf Monthly’s digital growth, the brand is now looking for a Videographer on a 12 month fixed term contract.

Working as part of a small team, you will be passionate about creating engaging, exciting video content that will entertain and grow our audience across a range of different platforms.

You’ll work with our journalists and instructors to film and edit consistently high-quality videos for distribution on the Golf Monthly website, YouTube and social media.

The GM forum gathered at Coventry GC on August 15 to remember Rickg and play for the Rickg Memorial Trophy on a superb day organised by Fish (Robin Hopkins)

2019 RickG Memorial Trophy Report

On Thursday August 15, members of the Golf Monthly website forum, along with a number of invited guests including Golf Monthly staff, converged on Coventry Golf Club in Warwickshire for the second staging of the Rickg Memorial Trophy, organised by Robin Hopkins, aka longstanding forumer, Fish. The 51 people taking part came from as far afield as Newcastle upon Tyne, Devon, Somerset and Kent, mostly on day trips.

Rick Garg, one of the Golf Monthly website forum’s most enthusiastic members and a mad-keen golfer, sadly passed away three years ago, and Coventry Golf Club had very kindly granted courtesy of the course and a shotgun start for the day, with greenstaff working tirelessly to prepare the course to a very high standard following non-stop heavy rain the day before.

The goal of the day was to remember Rick, enjoy a round on the fine parkland course, and raise vital funds for the work of the British Heart Foundation. It was a resounding success on all three counts, with some taking better advantage of Coventry’s five par 5s than others.

A number of spot prizes for nearest the pins, longest drives and assorted other challenges were on offer along with a very generous prize for the top-scoring forum member of a Stewart Golf push trolley, kindly donated by the successful British company. After the golf, Robin thanked them and a host of other companies and individuals for their assistance and generosity with prizes, raffle prizes and much more, including the other main sponsors - Lamkin Grips, Galvin Green and RMH Same Day Couriers.

The weather, mercifully, played ball with all 18 holes completed without a drop of rain and plenty of sunshine on offer. Following a hearty meal in the clubhouse afterwards looking out over the 18^th hole, the main individual prizes went to…

Treeseeker was presented with the wood-carved Rickg Memorial Trophy, and the total amount raised for the British Heart Foundation was an excellent £2,265.

There were a number of ex-serviceman in the field, including a group from the Royal Tank Regiment Society, and Rick Garg was himself an ex-RAF man, something that had led to him setting up the annual Golf Monthly forum Help for Heroes charity day. This successful event is celebrating its 10^th anniversary at Tandridge Golf Club in Surrey in September 2019, having already raised an incredible £100,000+ to date.

It is hoped that the Rickg Memorial Trophy will also become an annual event to help celebrate the life of one of the Golf Monthly forum’s most popular characters, while also raising vital funds for the work of the British Heart Foundation.

The colourful two-time Major champion will be hosting this year's Variety Club Golf Society Sunshine Classic over Woburn's Marquess' course on June 27

John Daly set to star at the Variety Club Golf Society Sunshine Classic

Many golfers will have heard of the The Variety Club Golf Society, which was founded in 1965 and raises money to purchase Sunshine Coaches for schools and care centres looking after disabled and disadvantaged children.

The money raised at its events, and via the Society’s generous sponsors, has put an incredible 1,150 coaches on the road to date – an average of over 20 per year.

A series of Variety Club Golf Society events is taking place this year from June to October ahead of December’s annual dinner. One of the highlights of the schedule is always the Variety Club Golf Society Sunshine Classic, which this year is being played at Woburn’s fabulous Marquess’ course on June 27.

It promises to be even more special as this year’s host is none other than two-time Major champion John Daly, one of the modern-day game’s most colourful characters.

The Premier League is the title sponsor of this year’s Sunshine Classic, at which the Variety Club Golf Society will be presenting two Sunshine Coaches to two fantastic special needs schools, with the Premier League presenting one and Variety Club member, William Saunders, the other.

Fergus Bisset was invited to Bruntsfield Links Golfing Society in Edinburgh to view the recently completed, ambitious and impressive course re-development programme that has taken place there.

Moving with the times - Impressive changes at Bruntsfield Links

Bruntsfield Links Golfing Society is one of Scotland’s great and historic golfing bodies.

In fact, The Society is the fourth oldest club in the world, with a heritage that can be traced back to the organisation’s origins in 1761.

The Society moved to its current site three miles west of Edinburgh city centre, an attractive tract of parkland looking out towards the Firth of Forth, in 1898 where twice Open Champion Willie Park Jnr laid out a course.

The list of the architects involved in the evolution of the layout at Bruntsfield Links makes for impressive reading.

Following Park’s initial design, Dr Alister MacKenzie (he of Augusta fame) was employed to oversee improvements in 1922 and then James Braid added further touches in 1930. During the 1970s, Fred Hawtree also oversaw work at Bruntsfield.

The quality of the layout has been recognised over the years by the fact The Society has played host to a number of prestigious competitions, including: The British Seniors Amateur Championship, of 1998, the Scottish Strokeplay Championship of 1992 and recently Regional Qualifying for the 2011-2015 Open Championships.

When The Society decided then to undergo further significant works to the course in 2016, it was fitting that leading architects Mackenzie & Ebert were selected through a tender process and given the task of overseeing the works.

Having completed work on seven of the courses on The Open rota, Mackenzie and Ebert’s objective at Bruntsfield was to restore the playing characteristics established by Dr Alister MacKenzie in the 1920s, with particular attention to be paid to the bunkering.

The £1.2 million project has been carried out in two phases over 2017 and 2018 and was completed in such a way that play was continuous through this time.

Before heading down to Edinburgh, I had learned that the project was completed on time, slightly under budget and that the course was playable again long before it was generally expected to be. That sounded to me like a pretty reasonable result.

I last played at Bruntsfield Links 10 years ago and had been highly impressed by the inland layout at that time. I was interested to see the alterations and the effect they have had on the feel and playability of the course.

First thing to say, before getting into the details on the course layout and redesign is that the feel and atmosphere at this tremendous city club has, thankfully, not changed from what I remembered.

From the moment one arrives at the elegant and comfortable clubhouse there’s a great sense of relaxed confidence about the place.

The quality of every aspect, from locker room to members’ lounge, pro shop to practice ground, is quite clear but it’s refined and quietly spoken.

It’s what you might expect from a society that has had 250+ years to get it just right.

Out on, and around the course, there’s a wonderful feeling of seclusion and tranquillity to be found. Set over 150 acres, this is a large swathe of parkland and it’s very easy to forget that the city is just a short drive away, and that urbanisation exists all around.

One of the great features on the course is the tremendous selection of trees surrounding, lining and framing the holes. The variety of shapes and colours these deciduous and coniferous trees provide creates a wonderful backdrop.

And, of course, they are a haven for wildlife: A recent survey discovered no fewer than 38 species of birds in the sectors reviewed.

To the course then in more detail. Standing on the 1st tee the immediate thing to strike me was the obvious aesthetic improvement of the remodelled bunkering.

Designed to recreate what Alister MacKenzie envisaged in the 1920s, the bunkers are a real feature now, right through the course.

They’re not overly deep and are generally very playable, but they’re elegantly sculpted and cleverly fingered to create appealing and attractive shapes. They look superb.

Right from the 1st, it’s also clear that the hazards are well-placed to deliver a more strategic examination from the tee.

An objective for the architect was to make sure the test at Bruntsfield is commensurate with the modern game, and they have succeeded in that aim.

The examination is definitely more strategic than last time I played – driver isn’t always the correct choice from the tee and playing for position, and avoiding sand is key.

Around the greens, a number of new green complexes have been established through the two phases and these undoubtedly deliver a fairer test than previously.

The work has been done cleverly and subtly and, in fact, it’s quite incredible that there is almost no evidence of the disruption there must have been, so soon after its completion.

In certain areas around the course, wispy grasses have been allowed to grow up providing great definition and, for me, this delivers just a feel of the heath that I think works really rather well, particularly where the pine trees are prevalent.

The shaping of some holes has been altered to improve the angles for both drive and approach and, again, these subtle changes have definitely heightened the challenge posed by the course.

I was particularly struck by alterations to the 9th hole. Previously it was a fairly straightforward par-4 up the hill, measuring just under 350 yards.

Now it’s a brilliant par-5 that wraps around the edge of Bruntsfield’s famous quarry, turning right to left.

It demands a drive to the right side, a lay-up into optimum position and a deft short shot to a raised green.

The 10th is now a very attractive par-3 with views of the Firth of Forth behind a long, narrow green that allows the hole to be stretched anywhere from just over 100 yards to nigh-on 170 yards.

Back-to-back par 5s at the 12th and 13th are both great fun to play and offer risk/reward opportunities.

The final stretch has been enhanced. There’s a new par-3 at the 16th, protected by a water-hazard to the left side, then the 17th is a challenging par-4 requiring two solid blows.

The last hole epitomises the revamped challenge at Bruntsfield. It may only be 340-yards, but bunkers wait at driving distance. A lay-up is required, asking for a tricky final shot to a subtly sloping green protected by more sand just short of the surface.

It’s a great strategic test and that pretty much sums up what has been created by Tom Mackenzie and The Bruntsfield Links Golfing Society through this project.

They have taken an already excellent inland course and carefully and cleverly remodelled it to maximise the golfing offering on this fine piece of expansive parkland.

The new bunkering is a triumph and the re-routing has created a selection of interesting and testing holes.

The Bruntsfield Links Golfing Society is rightly proud of its history and of the great architects who have shaped their lovely course over the last 120 years. Tom Mackenzie has been able to keep a close eye on that heritage while moving the layout strongly and confidently into line with the modern game.

Loch Lomond Whiskies, The Official Spirit of The Open has agreed a partnership with 2011 Open Champion and 2016 Ryder Cup Captain Darren Clarke.

Darren Clarke joins Loch Lomond Whiskies

2011 Open champion Darren Clarke has become the latest high-profile golf professional to establish a partnership with Loch Lomond Whiskies – The Official Spirt of The Open.

Clarke will work with Loch Lomond whiskies to promote the brand’s range of single malts around the world. In addition, with the 148th Open Championship headed for Clarke’s home town of Portrush in Northern Ireland next year, the 2016 Ryder Cup captain will collaborate with Loch Lomond Whiskies’ Master Blender, Michael Henry, to create The Open Course Collection: Royal Portrush Edition. The Royal Portrush Edition will be a 19-year old Single Malt and will go on sale in early 2019.

“To mark The Open at Royal Portrush – a club that is so close to my heart – with my very own single malt whisky is absolutely fantastic. It’s a huge honour to join Loch Lomond Whiskies and to have the chance to create a single malt with the experts at the distillery,” said Clarke. “I can’t wait to tee it up next summer and enjoy a wee dram with the fans!”

Darren Clarke won The Open Championship at Royal St George’s in 2011. In challenging conditions, he displayed his skill and experience on the links to beat Phil Mickelson and Dustin Johnson into second place. The Open returns to Royal St George’s in 2020 so the next two years will be hugely significant for Clarke and the association for Loch Lomond Whiskies couldn’t come at a more appropriate time.

“Yes, Portrush next year and then back to St George’s in 2020, it’s going to be very exciting for me,” said Clarke. “I’m very much looking forward to this two-year stretch and now to have this association with The Spirit of The Open; Loch Lomond Whiskies, I’m absolutely delighted.”

Clarke joins Colin Montgomerie, Paul Lawrie and Cristie Kerr as ambassadors for Loch Lomond Whiskies.

“We’re delighted to welcome Darren to Loch Lomond Whiskies and incredibly excited about working together,” said Loch Lomond Group CEO Colin Matthews. “He’s a world class golfer and loved by fans across the globe – a perfect fit for our brand.”

Donald Steel’s biography of Sir Michael Bonallack charts a remarkable life of excellence on and off the golf course.

Review: Par Excellence The Biography of Sir Michael Bonallack

Sir Michael Bonallack has made a tremendous impact on the game of golf as both player and administrator. He is Britain’s finest ever amateur golfer and as Secretary of the R&A, and ambassador for the sport, his contribution to the game he loves has been substantial. He was deservedly inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2000. In a detailed and wide-ranging biography commissioned by the R&A, Donald Steel has covered Sir Michael’s outstanding life in golf.

For those who don’t know about the significance of Sir Michael Bonallack’s golfing career, two early clues are available on an initial scan of “Par Excellence”. First, consider the author, who has a golfing history that would usurp most. Donald Steel played in The Open Championship of 1970 and he did so as the Sunday Telegraph’s golf correspondent, a post he held from 1961 to 1989. He has written a number of books on the sport and is also a renowned golf course designer. He has advised every club or course on which the Open championship has ever been played in his capacity as a golfing architect.

The second clue comes in the shape of the man who has provided the foreword – the greatest ever to play the game, Jack Nicklaus. He and wife Barbara are good friends of Sir Michael and his wife Angela and the warmth the 18-time Major winner feels for the Bonallacks comes through in an elegantly written, one-page tribute that kicks this biography off beautifully.

The first question I had about this book was answered in the very first paragraph of Chapter 1. When I’d heard that Donald Steel had written a biography of Sir Michael, I wondered why there hadn’t been one written already. I’ve produced a few scribblings on his career in the past and, having done a small amount of research into his achievements, was astounded by what he’d accomplished. Surely, I thought, some worthy scribe must have put it all together in a book. But no, not until this point. And the author explains why – When asked by friends why a book had not been written about him, Sir Michael’s response was, “A book, who on earth would want to read about me?”

Sir Michael may be a modest man but his achievements in golf are most certainly not. He won the Amateur Championship five times and the English Amateur Championship five times. He played in nine Walker Cups and was twice leading amateur in The Open.

The book charts all these successes but also puts them into context. We look at the family history and Michael’s earliest forays on to the golf course. The book also looks at the formidable playing career of Michael's wife Angela, their life together and how the pair have always worked so well as a team in their continuing efforts to promote golf and to support those starting out in the game. Theirs has been a remarkable partnership.

Steel is able to give detailed reports of Bonallack’s golfing successes with great personal touches owing to the fact he was often at the events he describes. As an example, at one point a feature, written by Steel, from Golf Monthly’s May 1970 issue is re-printed over six pages.

Amidst the wonderful and informative copy, there are many other fabulous snippets in Par Excellence. I love the original profile of the GB&I Walker Cup team of 1965 and, most of all, a copy of Bonallack’s scorecard from the morning round of the 1968 English Amateur Championship final.

I hadn’t been fully aware of the brilliance of that round at Ganton: Bonallack went out in 32 and came back in 29 for a 61 to be 11-up on David Kelley of Blackwell at lunch. He closed out the contest by 12&11. Amazing stuff.

As the book goes on to describe Sir Michael’s career as an administrator and ambassador for golf, one begins to be overwhelmed by just how much he took on and delivered for the game. Yes, he was R&A Secretary for 16 years, but he was also chairman of the PGA of Great Britain and Ireland between 1976 and 1982, chairman of the Golf Foundation from 1977-1982, president of the Golf Foundation from 2000-2003 and president of the EGU in 1982. The list goes on…

Sir Michael Bonallack is one of the all-time greats of British golf who has dedicated himself to the sport he loves. This book covers a remarkable golfing life.

Roger McStravick’s excellent and entertaining guide to the Auld Grey Toon will have golf lovers laughing out loud and nodding in appreciation.

From the word go, Roger McStravick’s fabulous guide to St Andrews and its historic Old Course, St Andrews A Comfort Blanket for the Hapless Golfer, is delivered with a heartfelt and personal touch that embraces the reader and takes them on a stirring tour of the Auld Grey Toon.

In the Acknowledgements for his latest book, Roger McStravick, author of the award-winning, St Andrews in the Footsteps of Old Tom Morris, explains the context in which this book was written – during a very tough spell for the author in which he lost three close family members in the space of 18 months. In under 175 words, he sums up his grief in the most delicate and moving fashion. He explains that he’s written the book as a comfort blanket for himself as well as his readers – With a lump in my throat, I was sold from that point on.

Things get decidedly more light-hearted as the book begins in earnest. A brief history of the town of St Andrews gives a flavour for the concise, amusing but considered approach taken by McStravick. In six pages he covers Jesus, the Picts, David I, Old Tom Morris, Pope Benedict XIII and the Duchess of Cambridge – very skilful.

Things get even more concise in Chapter 1 which is comprised of just one word… The title is “Can you get me a time on the Old Course?” … I’ll leave you to guess what the word is.

The next three chapters give some sage instruction on how best to get on to the hallowed turf of Golf’s “Grand Old Lady,” how to prepare for the experience and how to deal with the 1st tee nerves as you stand up to play on golf’s most famous links. Just reading the instructions on the latter had me hyperventilating – rather amusing though and I felt better to know that, in 1946, General Eisenhower found the prospect of the opening drive at St Andrews so daunting that he had walked the 1st hole.

It should be noted that the book is beautifully illustrated by Kate Scurfield of Horse & Hound who perfectly captures the spirit of the book in a series of characterful, tongue-in-cheek depictions of golf and life in St Andrews.

Back to the writing, the chapter on Old Course etiquette is particularly enlightening – covering a broad range of thorny issues, from pace of play to terrorism. There’s good advice on what to wear, how to spot when a caddy is taking “the proverbial” and why GPS devices are tolerated but not admired.

There’s a comprehensive tour of the Old Course itself with some excellent anecdotes thrown in amongst the facts on bunkers and yardages. Many of these cover the author’s experiences in golf and life in general and all are very cleverly woven in.

We’re given a brief trip around the other courses in St Andrews before we’re taken back in time with some excellent guidance on the tremendous history waiting to be explored in St Andrews – there’s far more than just golf to enjoy in the Auld Grey Toon! McStravick is clearly a knowledgeable historian and this is confirmed by one line that had me chuckling; “the movie Braveheart is as accurate historically as The Wizard of Oz is to the early days of Australia.”

There’s plenty on the history of golf in St Andrews mind you, and a fine chapter on the notable figures associated with both the sport and the town – from Sir Hugh Lyon Playfair up to David Joy – the renowned Tom Morris enactor and artist.

To finish we are given some excellent advice on where and what to eat and drink in St Andrews and what else to see when we visit. It should be noted that this book is as useful as it is informative and entertaining. Whether you know St A’s well or not, there’s something to be gleaned from McStravick’s writing. Those who are frequent visitors will find the familiarity comforting, as the title suggests, but they will also uncover nuggets of information erstwhile unknown. Those who know less of the place, will enjoy the guidance as well as the humour.

The nine-time Open Championship venue is doing its bit to help grow the game with youngsters

Royal Troon Inspires Golf's Next Generation

Royal Troon Golf Club is widely acclaimed as one of the finest links courses in the UK and a has hosted The Open Championship on nine occasions.

It is now also driving forward with new initiatives providing opportunities for young girls and boys from the local community to get into golf and become golf club members of the future.

This initiative is now well under way, evidenced by more than 200 kids aged 5 to 12 participating in the UK’s largest kids’ school golf festival thus far in 2018, held on Wednesday 20 June 2018 at the Open Championship venue.

Working in partnership with the Ayrshire based GolPhinForKids Foundation, the PGA Professionals at Royal Troon are in the process of delivering a new golf education programme called MyPathway2Golf.

The brainchild of GolPhin, the Irvine based Junior Golf Equipment Company, MyPathway2Golf is leading the way in introducing golf to young children and hence helping golf clubs recruit and retain young kids as members of their golf clubs.

Head professional Kieron Stevenson and his assistants Adam, Gary and Euan have invested over 300 hours of their own time for free to help get the project up and running , Kieron goes on to explain “Attracting young kids into golf is absolutely essential as we as PGA golf professionals try and compete with other sports and activities. We decided to reach out to all 7 local primary schools to provide free access to golf at school. The idea was to make it fun, make it easy to understand and make the game easy to learn. We partnered with GolPhin to adopt their MyPathway2Golf system and easy to play with equipment. It’s a holistic approach to golf and includes health, wellbeing, education and life skills at its core, the kids and school teachers love it.”

Royal Troon Club Captain, Alasdair Cameron, is delighted with the new initiative and commented “Junior golfers are the life blood of our sport. It was very encouraging and pleasing to see so many kids, especially the turnout of girls at our event here this evening. Many of these kids are aged between 5 and 10 years old which was great to see. Seeing so many girls and boys having fun on our Craigend short course was heart-warming – well done to everyone involved.”

Golf is often regarded as an inaccessible sport that is very expensive. Not so with the way GolPhin has set up its programmes. It is absolutely free for all kids at school and golf clubs in Ayrshire are now adopting the programme at their own clubs. Calum McPherson, Founder and MD of GolPhin explains “Our schools programme is giving primary school kids the opportunity to experience golf at an early age. Playing with their friends, having fun, encouraging the kids to learn the game. This way we create the environment for kids to choose to play the game rather than parents trying to impose the sport upon their kids. We then link the schools and the kids to local golf clubs who make sure the positive journey continues. Doing this with our MyPathway2Golf online platform helps golf clubs make golf fun and rewarding for kids whilst keeping parents engaged with their kids’ progress. “

Arnold Clark, the Scottish based car retailer, sponsors the school programme in Ayrshire. Every child in the programme receives a free golf club and safety practice balls to get them started. David Cooper, a Director of the firm, said “We support local initiatives that can help kids get out in the fresh air, exercise and have fun. This programme is fantastic, our support helps the kids start off with the right equipment, which is easy to swing and makes it easier for the kids to enjoy the game.”

Through its Professional, Royal Troon Golf Club, and other clubs on the MyPathway2Golf, are also able to offer very affordable deals on kids’ golf equipment, even offering a monthly subscription to make selecting buying and upgrading golf clubs for kids easy and affordable for parents.

The BMW Golf Cup International is the world’s largest international tournament series for amateur golfers. The three category winners at St Andrews will go on to the World Final in Mexico next March where they will form a team of three representing BMW UK. Golfer Aims To Play Every Links Course In The UK For Alzheimers

A self-confessed traditional links enthusiast searching for the perfect links experience Charles O’Reilly’s challenged himself to play every links course in the British Isles and record the experience at www.thelinksgolfer.com.

Why Links golf?

A sun burned face, wind ruffled hair, sand in your collar, and a grin on your face. Another day on the links.   See also; rain stung eyes, numb fingers, salty hair and a grin on your rosy cheeks. The only constant is the grin. Golf in the raw. Man and ball against the elements. You, your God and your scorecard. A primitive yet profound experience am I reaching too far? Is it transcendental?

I remember my first links round at St George’s and I loved it, not the score, obviously, but the tight turf, beautiful greens, rollicking fairways, knee length rough; definitely a two handkerchief course a red one to mark the ball, if found, and one white one for waving. There was also sensational sea food and good company. It instilled a love of seaside links, a desire to get better, and to discover the traditional links these islands have to offer.

I haven’t quite accepted that I will only ever be a moderate golfer with a handicap hovering just above the single digits. Good enough to tackle most courses but unlikely to tame any. I have felt the occasional high and have a thorough knowledge of the dark side.

Why the British Isles?

My grandmother hated sailing so when my grandfather went down to the sea she visited a different county every year staying with friends, being passed onto friends of friends, and got to know the country. Furthermore, she was always back to hand out the prizes at the regatta tea. Simple. Too often we jump on a plane to find something special, and rarely find it, yet there is so much to love in our own country. Conjoining my love of links golf with a desire to explore my own country my challenge was forming.

The geographical spread of links golf can be summarised as a story of the British Army, railways and Donald Trump’s spiritual forebears if that is an allowable phrase. There are examples of the British Army building courses in Ireland, railways opening up whole sections of the coast and entrepreneurs and golf fanatics building links on suitably unsuitable land. Dooks in Kerry, Ireland, can point to all three elements being fundamental to its birth, growth and regeneration.

Many traditional links courses are unfashionable because they appear unsuited to today’s equipment. They cannot, on their confined strips of land, be re-configured to suit pumped up youngsters but they require great subtlety. Every passing cloud changes the shots required, imagination is essential; you need to visualise how the ball will carry and run and having visualised the shot, it is extraordinary how often it turns out that way. Literally.  But people bypass these glories for the new 8,000 yard layout which has to compromise character for length and hasn’t had the time to be softened and adjusted by the climate and different hands to bring past and present together. Let’s celebrate these old places handed down to us and not forget the game we inherited.

But where to start? An Australian guide, obviously, not that Darwin and Rountree, Steel and others were not useful, but David Worley is the fellow. Ex amateur tennis player an 11 handicapper, he has visited, recorded and photographed 165 links courses in the UK and Ireland. His book ‘Another journey through the links’ is a great start. He will save you a lot of time and he doesn’t put himself front and centre or go on about seafood or fallibility. He is not self-indulgent.

Why bother?

There is a purpose beyond my indulgence which is to celebrate two people close to me that live with Alzheimers. A brain disease. The only top ten cause of death in the UK for which there is no current cure, proper diagnosis or alleviation. Over 40,000 people under 65 live with it. It is not an inevitable part of ageing. If we can devote the same resource to it as we have to cancer we can find answers quickly. But Alzheimer charities only receive £1 for every £20 Cancer research gets. Over recent years American Golf has helped many families spend more time together, on and off the course, through events such as the American Golf Junior Championship, Family Championship and Long Drive Championship.

The brand has met some incredible families who have stood out both for their ability and the strength of their bond.

Here we introduce you to three such pairs who have relationships that would be the envy of many and show how the best father’s day gift this year could be a gift of the game of golf.

Elle & Dean Gibson

Elle and Dean first met the team at American Golf when Elle took part in the 2016 American Golf Junior Championship.

At just 13 years old and playing off 16 Elle plotted her way round the final, with the help of dad Dean caddying, to record an incredible net 63 and take the girls title.

On winning the event Elle commented, "I really enjoyed the day, everyone was really friendly which helped to calm my nerves!

"It was great having my Dad caddy so he could share the experience too.”

Elle has since gone on to finish second by just one yard in the 2017 American Golf Long Drive Championship, during which Dean showed far more nerves than his daughter!

Dean credits golf for the strength of his relationship with Elle and treasures the times that it’s just him, Elle and their clubs, “As Elle has got better at golf I’ve spent as much time supporting her as I did playing but that is just as special as being on the course.

"That said, one of my favourite things is just grabbing a few clubs and heading down to Topgolf for a couple of hours with her.

"We’re guaranteed to have a laugh and enjoy the competition.

"Golf gives me time with Elle that is so unusual for a dad and a teenage daughter and I think it’s played a huge part in us getting on so well.”

Aaron & Vic Mohun

Aaron and Vic have been part of the American Golf family since 2015 when Aaron took part in the Junior Championship Future Stars category at the age of 8.

Two years later and Aaron was lifting the overall Junior Championship title with Dad Vic caddying throughout the winning round.

Aaron and Vic then teamed up later in the season to take on the American Golf Family Championship.

Their consistent teamwork took them through the qualifying rounds to secure a place in the final at Ryder Cup venue the Belfry where they enjoyed two days of each other’s company on the iconic course.

After spending an incredible year by Aaron’s side Vic reflected on the impact that golf has had, “I’ve been playing golf with Aaron for most of his life and I can’t say how much fun it’s been.

"To get to spend time with him away from school, work and life’s pressures at some fantastic golf venues is so special.

"I can’t think of another activity we could do that would give us the same chance to get to know each other and enjoy each other’s company so much.”

James & Ian Fox

The Malkins Bank qualifier of the American Golf Family Championship in 2017 was the first time Ian & James had played competitive golf together.

They secured victory and a place in the final at the Belfry, all the time keeping broad smiles on their faces and enjoying the camaraderie.

Those smiles only got bigger as finals weekend progressed with them ultimately taking the matchplay final 3 & 2.

That win secured them a spot in the American Golf Tournament of Champions in Mauritius in which, after sunning themselves for a few days along with mum Ruth, they took the overall title of Champions of Champions.

After the end of their journey from Mauritius Ian commented, “When your kids become teenagers you expect them to go their own way and start making their own lives.

"James has done that like any normal lad but we still have our time on the course.

"Golf gives us a connection and common ground but most importantly it gives us time to get on and enjoy each other’s company.

"To be so successful with the American Golf tournaments was the cherry on top but golf is what has given so much to our relationship.”

To celebrate Father’s Day, American Golf asked the three pairs to talk a little about the experience of being a team, playing together and what the game of golf means to them.

Getting Checked Can Save Your Life

There is no way around it, prostate cancer kills 10,000 men a year. But this number can be significantly reduced if more men played it safe and went to the doctor to get their prostate checked.

Alan Oliver did so eleven and a half years ago, and having gone through a series of treatments, he is still alive and kicking today. An avid golfer, Oliver plays at Portal Golf Club in Chesire and at one stage he got down to a handicap of nine.

For the past few years, Oliver has been working with Prostate Cancer UK to spread the word on going to the doctor sooner rather than later and one fantastic avenue he has gone down is poetry.

If you’re standing there yawning at three in the morning

It’s time to remove any doubt

Prostate Cancer UK

Founded in 1996 Prostate Cancer UK has the target of eradicating the issue of men dying by prostate cancer within 10 years.

Their plan on their website says, "In the last 20 years, we’ve invested over £37 million into ground breaking research. Bit by bit we’ve unearthed new discoveries. Inch by inch we’ve increased our knowledge, building on the advances of previous research, and laying foundations for future learning."

It also revolves around better diagnosis, better treatment, better prevention and better support.

We all can help and play a part too, because it is better to be safe than sorry when it comes to our health. Going to the doctor can help us all continue to play the great game that is golf!

New golf format is working wonders at getting more people playing golf across the country.

Golf Access Is Getting More People Playing Golf

Golf Access is a new format in golf designed to get more people playing the sport we love and it is having huge success doing so across the country at the moment.

Over 75 golf clubs have signed up to become Golf Access Centres, such as Saunton, Trevose, and Skibbereen and West Carberry Golf Club in Ireland. When surveyed, 100% of the clubs that have signed up would recommend it to other clubs because it could increase beginner participation, increase junior and adult memberships, and would get people coming back to play more often.

Dean Harrison, the PGA Professional at Chilworth Golf Club said, “Thanks to the Golf Access experience on the course, many of my junior tuition sessions are now student led. The kids have a clear idea on what they need to improve on and realise all the games we play on the range are targeted to improve their games on the course. I like the format and like the freedom t0 implement Golf Access in my own way. Golf really needs more participants and this is a great way to introduce them."

How Does It Work? 

Golf Access is a new type of scoring system designed to be played from a forward tee. There are 9 bands or levels to go through and work towards, where players can progress by slowly improving their score each time they play. When each level has been completed juniors will be presented with a different colour band, and adults will get a poker chip ball marker.

The idea also has excellent rules like, if a player scores more than 10 on a hole they can pick up and mark that on their scorecard. Additionally, if a player takes more than three shots to get out of a bunker, they can pick it up and place to the side of it. It is these types of rules that can make golf more enjoyable for beginners.

Golf Access gives all new players a target to strive for and it gets them playing out on the course and learning the game there, instead of hitting ball after ball on the range.

Once the player has completed Golf Access and received their platinum band or ball marker, they can move on to Golf Access+.

Golf Access+ takes their game to the next level with a starting handicap starting at 54. They then play 9 holes trying to play to a lower and lower handicap. Much like Golf Access, there are 9 bands to work towards ending at a handicap of 36.

Importantly, this idea can be introduced on every course and keeps the player engaged long enough to see a difference in their game. Combined with Golf Access+, the player usually gets bitten by the golfing bug by then. 

Simon Wood, Golf Access creator, came up with the idea whilst working as a PGA Professional. In an interview with Golf Monthly, Wood said "I was always very successful as a professional at actually getting people to play golf on a golf course. When I was working for England I found lots of people get into the game but we didn't actually convert them to playing on the golf course, a lot of the sessions are very much range based."

"So we were telling them how to swing the club, but we weren't helping them learn the game, and I thought there must be some way, a better way for beginners, adults and juniors, to get involved in the game on the golf course rather than just purely on the practice area."

There are also plans to expand the idea even further passed Golf Access+. Wood said, "we are currently looking into the next stage of that. A lot of clubs have asked what's next? So that's what we are going to look at. It will probably be a similar colour-coded scheme marking the handicap levels, we just need to put that in place."

"The whole idea was to get them to a standard where they would want to carry on in their own time."

24 legends of rugby union will play in a televised match play event at the Buckinghamshire in July.

Rugby Legends Collide In Match Play Team Event

At the end of July, the Buckinghamshire Golf Club in Denham, England will host a golf match play event between rugby legends from the northern and southern hemispheres.

Hosting some of the finest players ever to kick the oddly shaped ball, the event is called the Icons of Rugby Golf Tournament and some of the big names attending include Brian O'Driscoll, Lawrence Dallaglio, John Smit, George Gregan, Bryan Habana, and Zinzane Brooke.

There are also some world class current players competing, such as Johnny Sexton, Stuart Hogg, and Jonathan Davies.

In total there will be 13 World Cup Winners, and over 1,860 total caps on display with all featuring in a Friday Pro-am on the 27th of July. This will be followed by paired match play contests over nine holes on Saturday and Sunday, concluding with singles matches on Sunday afternoon deciding the winning team.

Additionally, there will be a live streamed Hole-In-One $1m prize shootout called the 'One Million Swing. This will feature all the competitors, and selected local club rugby fans and spectators at the end of the tournament.

No doubt the Buckinghamshire Golf Club will give a stern test amidst beautiful surroundings.

Situated in 226 acres of English parkland, the golf course was designed by former Ryder cup captain John Jacobs and it offers a difficult get from whatever tee you play off.

Water comes into play on seven of the first 12 holes but with large greens, we should see plenty of good golf from the legendary competitors.

Tom Brookes, founder of the Icons Series concept said, "There are lots of other special features for spectators to enjoy at the event that's designed to be inclusive for both rugby and golf fans, with adults gaining entry for just £20 and anyone under the age of 18 for free each day.

"More than 70% of spectators at previous Icons Series events have been new to golf events and with the strong teams of rugby icons we anticipate another great turnout of golfing newcomers."

Report - Golf Monthly Over 50s Challenge at Walton Heath

Glorious blue skies greeted the 18 lucky readers who gathered at the prestigious Walton Heath Golf Club in Surrey for the ‘Golf Monthly Over 50s Challenge’ in association with Flying Colours Wealth Management.

Home to two famous courses, the Old and the New – both ranked in Golf Monthly’s GB&I Top 100 Courses – Walton Heath has played host to many notable events over the years, including the 1981 Ryder Cup, The European Open and US Open Qualifying. This October The British Masters hosted by Justin Rose will visit the venue and it proved the perfect place for this exciting reader day.

The event was hosted by Guy Myles, CEO of Flying Colours Wealth Management and previously founder of Octopus Investments, who presented a fascinating overview of how individuals can better organise their finances to take advantage of opportunities and avoid some of the more common investing mistakes.

The presentation gave much food for thought and the readers had the opportunity to discuss some of the topics raised in more depth with Guy and his team of knowledgeable advisers both during the course of the day and afterwards.

Before tackling the New Course the assembled golfers took part in a superb interactive 75-minute putting clinic led by Walton Heath head professional, Simon Peaford, where they got to benefit from tips, drills and advice.

Ian Dudman of Evnroll, one of the hottest putter brands in the game, was also on hand with a full selection of the company’s innovative flat-sticks for our readers to try on the famous Walton Heath putting green.

After the putting session that saw the ‘lefties’ triumph over the ‘righties’ in a team shoot out, it was time to tackle the New Course, which is ranked number 50 in Golf Monthly’s Top 100 courses 2017/18.

Established in 1907, this exacting heathland layout provided a strong test. Fairways lined with heather and undulating fast greens meant there was a premium on accuracy and the putting skills they’d gleaned earlier.

The standard of play was excellent and it took a countback to decide the winners in both the individual and team competitions. The individual honours went to 14-handicapper Terry Gyorffy, who just edged 22-handicapper Paul Hicks on a best 6 countback after they both carded an 18-hole total of 35 points and back 9s of 17 each.

There was another visit to the prize table for Gyorffy as part of Team 1 where he joined forces with Mark Smith, Anthony Downs and Jon Dominey from Flying Colours Wealth to record an impressive 84 points in the best two from four format.

The day concluded with a superb two-course meal served in the club’s historic Fowler Room and closing words from Golf Monthly editor Mike Harris and Flying Colours Wealth Management CEO Guy Myles.

The Sick Children’s Trust Golf Day aims to raise £15,000 to keep its ten ‘Homes from Home’ running

Charity 'The Sick Children’s Trust' is calling for keen golfers to take part in its Golf Day at The Addington Golf Club this June to raise money to support families with seriously ill children in hospital.

The Golf Day, which is in its second year, was a sell-out event in 2017 and the last few teams are now available to buy for this year’s event on Friday 22 June.

On the day aspiring Rory McIllroys and Charley Hulls can expect breakfast in the Clubhouse, before taking a swing on the 18 hole world-class course, followed by a two-course meal with wine and a prize giving. Last year, the charity’s Golf Day was a sell-out success so book early to avoid disappointment!

John Moffatt, Head of Specialty at ArgoGlobal, and Chair of the ArgoGlobal Charity Committee, says: “We’re delighted to be supporting our charity partner The Sick Children’s Trust by entering five teams into this year’s Golf Day. Eight-time European Tour Number 1 Colin Montgomerie has agreed a high-profile partnership with Loch Lomond Whiskies “The Spirit of The Open.” Fergus Bisset travelled to Alexandria to find out more.

As a keen golfer with a special aptitude for playing the 19th hole, Scotland is to me, a paradise. Not only are we blessed with many of the finest golf courses in the world, but we can also boast a national drink of tremendous complexity and international renown…. No, not the stuff made from girders… I’m talking, of course, about whisky. There will be more to come on my day, sipping single malts with Monty in The Open issue of Golf Monthly but let me give you a brief synopsis:

We met at the Loch Lomond Whiskies distillery in Alexandria where we enjoyed a fascinating tour of the premises and discovered more about the unique nature of the manufacture of Loch Lomond’s diverse range of whiskies. The method is intricate and scientific, and we saw the precise nature of every step of the process, from fermentation to distillation to maturation. I won’t go into details here but, suffice to say, Loch Lomond does a few things a little differently to other distilleries I have visited and that allows them great scope for variance in notes and flavourings through distillation as well as during the maturation period.

We then had a brilliant round-table discussion with Monty that lasted over an hour, in which we chatted on whisky (of course) and his excitement at being involved with Loch Lomond Whiskies. The company is producing two “limited editions” to mark The 147th Open at Carnoustie, as well as a “Single Cask” edition that will carry Monty’s name. Later in the year, a “Colin Montgomerie” limited edition single malt will also be released.

Monty then spoke: on The Open, “Seen as the world event in golf,” Carnoustie, “Not one of the toughest links…. THE toughest links,” his battle with Tiger in the 2005 Open, “To witness him playing at the top of his game was an incredible experience. He was just a little different,” Tiger today, “I can see him winning again,” and the Ryder Cup, “Europe might be slight favourites.” …. All that to come in our Open issue.

Then we headed for a wonderful lunch at the Luss Seafood Bar and a boat trip onto the loch for a whisky tasting. All of us enjoyed sampling a selection of Loch Lomond’s characterful range of 12-year-old malts plus the rich and full 18-year-old… Again, more of that in the Open issue.

It was a great day and brilliant to learn about a Scottish brand with such great passion and an ambition to use golf, and golf’s greatest championship, plus a superb ambassador in Monty, to expand its reach across the globe. I’m excited to have been there at the start of this journey and will watch it unfold with interest – As I say, check out more in our Open issue…

Aged 82, Archie Blair from Perthshire has enjoyed an eventful life in golf. He may have now hung up his clubs but his involvement with the game continues. He’s just released a golfing thriller called “Going for Gold,” involving The Open Championship, a teenage golfing ace and a pair of would-be assassins.

Golf Monthly spoke recently with Archie Blair, an 82-year-old from Blairgowrie in Perthshire about his life in golf and his new golfing thriller called “Going for Gold.”

Archie, a member of Strathmore Golf Club in Perthshire, hit the headlines a few years ago when he scored his sixth hole-in-one on the sixth hole at Strathmore, using a six-iron. There are some pretty incredible hole-in-one stories out there but this one takes some beating as he achieved his 6-6-6 feat on the 31st of October. “The sign of the devil… On Halloween!” he says with a chuckle. “Word got around and one of the guys I played with was a DJ with Radio Tay. He contacted the Daily Record. They like to do a whacky piece on sport each Monday and I was interviewed.”

The interest didn’t stop there as other news outlets picked up on the 6-6-6 story. “I came into the clubhouse and the girls behind the bar said I was to phone the BBC,” he says. “By this time, I was getting pretty hacked off by it all but they insisted and I was interviewed for Radio Scotland’s newsdrive - My 15 minutes of fame.”

What made Archie’s story even more amazing was that he was playing on a prosthetic leg. His leg had been amputated following complications during an operation that didn’t go according to plan.

“I went in and out of surgery five times, my heart started giving out and they chopped my leg off,” he says with a matter of fact. “When you’re in that situation, you have a simple choice. You can either curl up and die or fight it and I chose to fight it.”

A golfer since youth and a former captain of Ravelston Golf Club in Edinburgh, Archie wasn’t going to give up on the game he loved either.

“I only had one leg but Ninewells Hospital had given me two separate prosthetics and I was keen to get back to the game,” he says. “Strathmore professional Andy Lamb took me in hand and we concentrated on balance and cutting down the swing. He was a great help.”

A single figure handicapper for much of his golfing career, Archie had been off 11 when he moved to Strathmore. After the amputation the club’s committee met and discussed what his new handicap should be. They settled on 22.

“I nearly burst into tears,” Archie says in a way that suggests he might just mean it. “But I worked on it and got it down to 17.”

A year ago, neuropathic pains in his foot became too severe for Archie to continue golfing but he remains a social member at Strathmore and he goes to the club a couple of times a week to meet friends. He has also been focusing on other interests.

“As a side-line, I decided to go to university and joined the Open University,” he says. “In 2014 I graduated with an honours degree in social science and politics. The following year – I class it my ‘gap year’ – I decided to write this book that had been kicking about in my brain and that was a most enjoyable experience.”

The result of that was “Going for Gold” – A golfing thriller. Archie explains the bones of the plot in his own words:

“The book centres around two characters – An 18-year-old Israeli professional called Dov Gold and a female Chief Superintendent of Police for Lothian and Borders, named Heather McKinnon.

I took advice from Peter Dawson, then Chief Executive of the R&A together with the secretary of the Scottish PGA who were both very helpful and I started to develop the golfing characters in the book.

Dov Gold is the Middle East’s answer to Tiger Woods. At the age of 18 he has won the Irish Open and has qualified for The Open, being played at Muirfield.

Gold attracts worldwide attention and publicity. Terrorists see him as a target and assign two assassins to take him out of the picture. The drama leads to the final round when Gold is paired with a hero of mine Justin Rose and the question is, will the assassins get their man?

I did a tremendous amount of research in writing the book and that was a significant part of the fun. I was determined that nobody would fault me on my facts.”

Archie had some knowledge of the setting for the golfing drama having played Muirfield a number of times in his younger days.

“When I first left school I joined the national coal board as an apprentice mining surveyor and then I moved to divisional headquarters. They had over 100 golf members and I got involved in the committee,” he says. “Legend has it that during the war when there was a shortage of coal, a coal board director who was a member of Muirfield managed to get a couple of trucks of coal shunted to Muirfield so we always had a chance to play there.”

Archie was also a friend of the brilliant, late sports writer Norman Mair who had written extensively on Muirfield. Archie himself wrote on the rugby for both the Scotsman and Edinburgh Evening Dispatch.

“I’ve set myself a target of 100 sales,” he says modestly. We think Archie should get beyond that without much trouble – For golf lovers who enjoy a bit of action and espionage what could be better?

Provison Events install putting course on the viewing platform at the Eiffel Tower

To mark the 'Year to Go' celebrations for the 2018 Ryder Cup, the French Golf Federation brought in Provision Events to get visitors to the Eiffel Tower in the golfing mood.

The Landmark putting course will live on the viewing platform of the Eiffel Tower for a week to keep the momentum going for visitors to the French capital.

The 42nd Ryder Cup will be held from September 28-30, 2018, at the Albatros Course of Le Golf National, Paris.

Nearly 90 players teed it up at Hankley Common Golf Club in the eagerly anticipated Golf Monthly Forum Help for Heroes Day

Golf Monthly Forum Day 2017 Raises £13,000 for Help4Heroes

The annual Golf Monthly Help for Heroes Forum Days have now raised over £96,000 in total thanks to another £13,000 at the gorgeous Hankley Common this year. All proceeds go to Help for Heroes, which supports injured and wounded ex-service personnel.

The eighth staging was well supported, with 89 golfers taking to the Surrey heathland classic, which ranks 34th in our Top 100. After Camberley Heath last year, and West Hill and North Hants previously, Hankley had a lot to live up to, but it was in pristine condition and made for a truly fitting venue.

Congratulations to Radbourne2010 who won 1st prize with 39 points playing off 5 on a day where winds were gusting at around 40mph at times. One point behind in 2nd place was GeneralStore, with Kraxx68 3rd on 34.

Best gross score was won by MendieGK, while Jake Barnes took the best guest score. In the team event GeneralStore, Jens Moeller-Butcher, Greg Nuthall and Steve Walters came out on top to claim the prize.

All in a very good cause

Longest drive was won by MashleyR7, who clearly ‘mashed’ one down the narrow and sloping 18th fairway. PNWokingham was nearest the pin in two on the tricky par-4 4th, while Crow won nearest the pin on the short 2nd, where anyone missing the green was obliged to surrender £1 to charity! There were just six gross twos all day, among them Blue In Munich’s on the tough, uphill, into-the-wind 7th, where he nearly holed a 1-iron before calmly rolling in an eight-footer.

The day’s most prestigious prize – the Rick Garg Memorial Trophy, in honour of one of the original organisers who has sadly passed away – was shared by Kraxx68 and Khamelion, who regularly travel down from the North East. This trophy recognises services to Help for Heroes since 2010’s inaugural event.

Before the day, forumers had the chance to bid to play with GM staffers, including editor, Mike Harris, as well as Top 25 Coach, Ged Walters. There were also three golfers taking to the fairways from Battle Back Golf, a scheme helping injured servicemen return to a more normal active lifestyle via the sport.

After dinner, Scott Blaney from Battle Back spoke movingly about his time in Afghanistan, a real lump-in-the-throat moment highlighting the life of a serviceman. He rightly received a standing ovation. Then it was time for the auction – always a highlight – with the “raise your hand if...” trick working yet again for the fantastic Mark Head.

Mark kicked off with Heads and Tails, a classic, last-man-standing coin game, before going on to raise thousands of pounds from a diverse collection, including the late Rick Garg’s John Letters irons, four-balls at top clubs and handcrafted oak items made in the Wood Shop at Phoenix House in Catterick, a Help for Heroes Recovery Centre, which raised £520 alone.

The Wood Shop had also handcrafted the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd prizes as well as the Rick Garg Memorial Trophy.

Hankley Common’s hospitality was fantastic and huge thanks must go to richart and wife, Vicky, along with Fish and Laura for their organisation, as well as to forumers and their guests for making the day so special.

Morrison is clearly an aficionado of the game and over the pages he shares his knowledge of and passion for the sport. He travels to Dornoch where he finds links golf of the most pure and spiritual kind. He soaks up the history in St Andrews and the rugged beauty of golf in Ireland. He visits Augusta and pulls no punches when it comes to describing the more authoritarian aspects of club and tournament. That’s a theme throughout – Morrison is not afraid to speak his mind and his opinions on Tiger Woods and Donald Trump will have most nodding their heads in quiet agreement.

There's plenty of history to be enjoyed too, from early stuff, the very beginning of golf even, to more recent competitive action. The chapter on The Open Championship provides excellent accounts of some classic recent Opens of particular significance to the author.

As the book approaches the turn... chapter nine that is... there’s a lovely interview with the late John Jacobs in which the founder of the European Tour covers everything from Laddie Lucas and Douglas Bader to curing a chronic shanker.

Morrison talks about his own golf too, in a very amusing and self-deprecating fashion, but it’s clear he has played, and still can play a bit. His attempt to shoot level par for nine holes at Burnham and Berrow (over eight consecutive circuits) will strike a chord with every aspirational golfer. You’ll need to read for yourself to find out if he’s successful.

He plays hickory golf, plays golf with his pals and with strangers but always with a curiosity to find out what makes them, and perhaps him, find the game so compelling. As the round, ok ebook, draws to a close, there’s a brilliant chapter on Seve and it all ends in France where Morrison decides he needs to write a book about golf. Quite clearly he follows through with that ambition and he does a tremendous job. The Meaning of Golf is a funny, observant and insightful book that all those who have an interest in this great sport will thoroughly enjoy.

Poults shanked his second on the 18th and proceeded to hit a wedge shot stiff from the trees for a tap-in par. It secured him second place to Si Woo Kim and also meant that he retained his PGA Tour card.

Jordan Spieth – The Open, 13th hole from range

Facing a nightmare situation, Spieth had to take in excess of 20 minutes to get a ruling and play 'that shot' from the Birkdale practice range. It looked like a double-bogey at least would follow. Instead, he blasted a 3 iron around 240 yards to the side of the green and got up-and-down for bogey.

On the very next hole, after what must have been an emotional rollercoaster, Spieth nearly aced the par-3 14th at Birkdale to leave himself a tap-in birdie, it was a swing worthy of a Claret Jug.

Lexi Thompson - Solheim Cup singles, holed 3rd for eagle on 11th 

Four down after nine holes to Anna Nordqvist, Lexi Thompson turned it on on the back nine. She was three down on the 11th and hit the shot of the week. She played seven holes on the back nine in eight under par to gain the upper hand in the match.

Sergio Garcia – The Masters, approach to 15th

Having just crushed a drive down the par-5 15th, Garcia faced a do-or-die shot from 192-yards. Would he chunk it into the water like Seve did in 1986?  Or would he hit it long of the green and face a treacherous up-and-down? No. He went straight at the flag, nearly holing it for albatross and then calmly rolled in a 15ft eagle putt to edge in front of Justin Rose.

Breakthrough Player of the Year

Aaron Rai - The Englishman won three times on the Challenge Tour and played in the US Open at Erin Hills

Georgia Hall - The 21-year-old finished T3rd at the Ricoh Women's British Open and put in a fine display in her first Solheim Cup

Jon Rahm - Won his first PGA Tour title at the Farmers Insurance Open and his first European Tour title at the Irish Open. Also reached #5 in the Official World Golf Ranking

Eight new American Golf Champions were crowned this weekend at four-time Ryder Cup venue the Belfry

American Golf Crowns 2017 Champions At The Belfry

Four time Ryder Cup venue the Belfry was the location for the conclusion of 3 days of thrilling golf finals this weekend. Eight new American Golf Champions were crowned across the finals event with six now progressing to the Heritage Resorts Tournament of Champions in Mauritius.

Following a summer series of 44 free to enter regional qualifying events, golfers from all over the UK and Ireland battled it out for the title in 9 Hole pairs and individual, Family, Scratch, Ladies, Senior, Par 3 and even Adventure Golf Championships.

With the title of American Golf National Champion on the line in each category, along with six places in the Heritage Resorts Tournament of Champions, competition was fierce. Some fantastic golf was played and incredible sportsmanship shown in conditions that varied from sunshine to rain to torrential rain before eight worthy winners were crowned.

American Golf has championed 9 hole golf for some time and this year’s competition, including the introduction of the individual event, didn’t disappoint. The pairs competition saw Paul Hutton and Howard Burton from Wortley Golf Club claim their win with victory on the 18^th hole from Fulford Heath’s Ross Holmes and Scott Nixon.

It was a tight match all the way round with Hutton reflecting after the win, “The guys we were playing got a hole in one when we were one up and it changed the game. It was ebbing and flowing and there was only one hole in it, but we managed to get one up at the right time”

After holing a 2 ft putt on the last to take the title, Burton commented, “I can’t believe I actually managed to get the club on the ball I was shaking so much. I can’t believe I got my first putt to 2 ft, but being on camera all I was thinking was ‘I can miss 2 footers!’”

The 9 Hole individual was just as tense with Penn G.C. member Steve Holmes taking the title 2 & 1 against Flint G.C. member Jason Owen.

Upon taking the title Holmes commented, “I played very well. Not as well this afternoon but enough to do the job. It’s been amazing. I’ve met some fantastic people and have been really looked after by everyone at the Belfry and everyone at American Golf.”

Holmes joins Hutton & Burton on the plane to Mauritius for the Heritage Resorts Tournament of Champions, a fact that has him caught in two minds, “I can’t believe it, but my gaffer won’t believe it either because I’ve got no holidays left!”

The Ladies’ Championship saw the most emphatic victory of Saturday with Michelle Black and Lisa Duffy of Rochdale G.C. taking a 4 & 3 victory over Orla McGuiness and Kay Farrell from Swords G.C. near Dublin. The Rochdale pairing had played some fantastic golf all through the competition and come the final were in no mood to let up.

“I can’t say we’ve played our best golf in the final but we’ve dug deep and scrapped. We’re good scrappers,“ commented Duffy.

Black confirmed that assessment by adding, “There were some shots I played that I thought ‘Oh no’ and there were some shots that Lisa played that I though the same! But we did play some very good bits in between. It’s amazing what a difference the cameras and the pressure of the event makes. But it’s been a wonderful experience and American Golf have been amazing.”

The Senior Championship saw a first for American Golf, with returning champions Martin Leo and Ian Hendry taking the title for the second year running. The Sussex pairing won 3 & 2 from Niall McDonnell and John Greer of Co.Dublin.

Hendry and Leo were another pair who didn’t feel they brought their best golf to the final round as a little fatigue set in.

“It’s a difficult format Matchplay over 9 holes but we played well enough to win,” commented Leo. “We’ve had a good 3 days. It’s a big event here, we’ve played lots of golf and we are Seniors. We’re 60 years plus and he’s a lot older than me as you can see!”

Hendry agreed, admitting that his playing partner shouldered much of the responsibility for their win in the final round, “I’m dreading the TV highlights, because how they could possibly edit out all of my shots. But I did have the winning putt, that’s the most important thing!”

One of the real highlights of the weekend was the Family Championship which saw family members take to the fairways together in search of the title.

Father & Son pair Ian and James Fox from Leyland Golf Club came out on top after beating Droitwich brothers Ian and Alan Gandy 3 & 2. This was the first year for the family championship and it quickly became a firm favourite with the competitors and crowds alike.

16 year old James Fox summed up the appeal of this new event when he said, “It was an unreal experience playing with my dad. We always play golf together but it makes this ten times better winning with him.”

Ian followed up by saying, “It’s a cliché but we dovetailed well. He kicked in when he had shots. I holed a putt on the 15^th for a half or we’d have been a bit knee knocking coming down the last stretch.”

And of the overall experience of the Family Championship Ian concluded, “It’s been fantastic. Everybody’s been really helpful. The staff have been really friendly. You judge a place by the warmth of the staff and we’ve felt it during our 3 days here both from American Golf and the Belfry.”

The best golf of the weekend was unsurprisingly played in the Scratch championship where Chris Abbott from Lutterworth Golf Club capitalised on a fantastic opening round of four under par to take the inaugural title from Chris Brook of Hinckley Golf Club.

Following his great start, Abbott had to dig deep to stay ahead but found enough to take the title. “I’m absolutely delighted. I had a good first round shooting 4 under but the conditions got really tough yesterday afternoon, so 4 over for the second round felt quite good.

"I didn’t play my best today but thankfully it was just enough to get over the line.”

While thrilled with the result, the overall experience provided by American Golf was one that he reflected that he would never forget, “We’ve been treated like royalty by American Golf these past 2 days.

"We’ve had free range balls, lunch provided, electronic leaderboards, it almost makes you feel like you’re a professional – especially with all the cameras as well!”

The Par 3 Championship came to its head to head conclusion on a specially prepared course over the back 9 of the Brabazon.

Over this unique course, Shaun Mason of South Staffs G.C. took the win 4 & 2 from Oxley Park member Paul Stokes.

Upon winning the tournament Mason commented, “I’m really buzzing. You couldn’t relax and play you’re normal game. It was tough but the course was in mint condition. It was a struggle to control my emotion with the whole occasion but I got there!”

Last but not least was the Adventure Golf final, played over the Ryder Legends course. In his comments after taking the win over Mini Golf experts Richard Gottfried and Peter Jones, Simon Lee summed up American Golf’s reasoning behind the Adventure Golf Championship.

“It’s a great way to get people who don’t play golf into the sport. They can come along and have a bit of fun. It was brilliant to see everyone come out today. If there was more stuff like this around I think you’d have more young kids getting into golf.

That’s where the future talent comes from, starting off with things like this.”

Playing partner Steve Gerrish followed up by saying, “American Golf have put on a great event. Everyone’s been involved, families, kids, it’s nice to see, it’s been brilliant.”

After watching all 8 The Championship Finals come to a conclusion, Daniel Gathercole, Director of Marketing and Communications at American Golf could barely hide his pride at the way the event had been received.

“We’ve had so many complements from the competitors over the past three days I can only thank the whole team at American Golf for the hard work they’ve put in. I’m so proud of the free events we run, from the qualifiers through to the finals.

"We’ve had nearly 190 qualifiers playing across eight Championships here at the Belfry with each one showing a true love of the game, competitive spirit and fantastic sportsmanship. This weekend is what golf is all about and I’m delighted that American Golf is at the heart of it.”

All of the Championship finals will be shown on Sky Sports across October and November.

The American Golf Events series is a vital part of American Golf’s drive to get more people out playing golf more often.

In its fourth year, the Championships goes from strength to strength and with the quality of golf and personality on show through this year’s qualifiers and finals, golf with American Golf has a very bright future.

The inaugural American Golf awards took place at the Belfry where Tommy Fleetwood, Georgia Hall and Ping were the big winners

Tommy Fleetwood Wins American Golf Player Of The Year

American Golf has celebrated the ‘Best of British’ with its inaugural Golf Awards held at the Belfry.

Among the headline winners of the night, as voted for by thousands of U.K. golfers, were Tommy Fleetwood and Georgia Hall for U.K. & Ireland players of the year and manufacturing giant Ping for brand of the year.

In the player categories there were two clear winners. The voting public reflected on some fantastic performances from Tommy Fleetwood that have seen him climb to the top of the Race to Dubai rankings off the back of two European Tour wins and 4^th place in the US Open. The Southport born world No.16 was a clear winner, taking the lion’s share of the vote ahead of fan favourite Andrew Johnston.

Upon learning of the award, Fleetwood said, “Getting the award for Player of the Year from American Golf is great and it means so much that it’s been voted for by the public. I’ve been able to get back to form this year with the support of my friends, family and the fantastic team around me, and to now have the public recognise all the hard work is really special.”

In the ladies category Georgia Hall was named as 2017 Player of the Year. 2017 has seen Georgia climb to No.3 on the Ladies European Tour order of merit, showing incredible consistency to record three top 5 finishes including 4^th at the Ricoh Women’s British Open. Georgia went on to further cement her place in the hearts of U.K. golf fans by taking two points in the Solheim cup, a feat which elevated her above Charley Hull who took second place in the American Golf public vote.

Hall was delighted with her award, especially the fact that it was voted for in Solheim Cup season, as she said, “I was up against many of my great friends and team mates at the recent Solheim Cup so I’m absolutely honoured to be able to win this award….. It means a lot to me and I appreciate it so much.”

One of the best received awards of the night was the American Golf Game Changer Award. PGA Master Professional Alasdair Barr was recognised for his continuing dedication to the development of the game of golf worldwide along with his work with Services charity On Course Foundation. Barr has worked with the R&A and PGA, taking golf to some of the most disadvantaged communities in the world, giving insight to new golfers and passing on skills to coaches in their home countries. Barr also gives his time to On Course Foundation, developing and leading their programme of rehabilitation for wounded, injured and sick Service personnel, using golf.

Barr was quite taken aback by his award, with his recognition being kept a secret until the announcement was made, “I’ve been a PGA Professional for 50 years and coached a World No.1 in Luke Donald but the past 5 working with On Course Foundation has been the most satisfying,” he said. “Just yesterday I was working with a guy who had PTSD and hadn’t left the house for 15 months. By the end of the day he was laughing and having fun. I’ve had people tell me that golf is the only reason they get up in the morning and that On Course Foundation has made them feel that they’re not alone. This award is more about the members of On Course than me. Without them I wouldn’t have the chance to get such enjoyment out of passing on the game I love. The only downside is that people know I do this for free and it doesn’t do any good for my reputation as a Scotsman!”

Another PGA member to gain recognition was Jon Earl who won PGA Professional of the Year for his work at Ified Golf Club. Having progressed through the junior ranks at Ifield, Jon took the role of Head Professional at the age of 25. Over 20 years later he is still there and was described by numerous members in their nominations as the heartbeat of the club. His work with Juniors, Ladies and the general development of the club was praised as above and beyond that which should be expected and his service to Ifield recognised by members as outstanding.

Away from the people honoured, Ping was the big winner of the night with their award for Brand of the Year. The voting public recognised a year in which Ping have consistently delivered products that have helped the U.K. golfing public improve their game and get more enjoyment from their golf.

Another brand celebrating was Arccos for their Most Innovative Product of the Year – Arccos Caddie – with the virtual caddie being recognised above several strong contenders in a fantastic year for innovation.

Last but not least, Golf Facility of the year went to 3 Hammers Golf Complex in Wolverhampton. The pioneering venue, which combines state of the art practice facilities, 18 hole short course and nationally recognised golf academy programmes pipped Boomers & Swingers from Manchester to the honours in this inaugural year.

At the culmination of the awards, Daniel Gathercole, Director of Marketing and Communications commented on the success of the night, “It’s been a huge honour for us that so many members of the public wanted to be part of our drive to recognise the best in golf. People have voted in their thousands which has really made these awards a very special event. All of the recipients have had a fantastic year and in the case of Alasdair Barr, an incredible life in golf. I couldn’t be happier with the way that the awards have been received and look forward to seeing more people get recognised by the public in years to come.”

Like when your editor needs someone from just such a demographic to head up to northern Iceland to find out more about a new natural health supplement called Benecta (www.benecta.co.uk), which seeks to “alleviate everyday symptoms often associated with ‘just getting older’ such as stiffness, aches and lethargy”.

The fact that I’d never been to Iceland before merely added to the appeal, so I needed little persuading to embark on an adventure to Siglufjordur, Iceland’s northernmost town just 24 miles south of the Arctic Circle, to find out more.

And an adventure it was too, with the three-hour flight to Reykjavik followed by a short internal flight to Akureyri then an hour’s transfer north to Siglufjordur via the most spectacular scenery.

It wasn’t long before we were pulling up outside the Siglo Hotel, which those who watched the dark Icelandic drama ‘Trapped’ will recognise from its BBC run last year. This fine hotel by the marina is part of the tale of regeneration in a town that once thrived on the herring fishing industry, before languishing in the wilderness when the herring disappeared almost overnight in 1968 due to overfishing.

It's only in recent years that the town has begun to thrive once more, this time with tourism as the lead industry, and it’s easy to see the attraction of Siglufjordur too, with the town enveloped in clean fresh air and surrounded by fjords or mountains on all sides.

One man who has played a key role in this regeneration is Robert Gudfinnson, the founder of Benecta, whose Genis hf premises stand proudly in town. We went for a good look around to find out more about this health supplement based on short-chain chitosan extracted from crustaceans.

Benecta’s strapline is ‘Defy your Age’ and anecdotal evidence suggests it has the most noticeable effect on older people who want to continue to live an active lifestyle, Golfers are included in the brand’s list of potential age-defying beneficiaries, and golf is another key part of the regeneration story in Siglufjordur, for although the town already had a nine-hole course of sorts, Gudfinnson has commissioned a brand new nine set in a stunning valley.

We went for a good look round this stunning layout set to open next spring, and were wowed not only by the setting but also the signature 7^th with its large island green. We were supposed to be playing golf elsewhere, but next thing we knew, Gudfinnson had hastily arranged for flags to be put in and for us to become the first people ever to play the new, not-yet-open Siglo golf course .

Among the standout holes were the drivable par-4 3rd, and the long, snaking 4^th that hugs a free-flowing river all the way to its tucked-away green. But the 6^th and 7^th are the stars visually – two short, but very different par 3s. The 6^th plays slightly uphill to a green encircled by trees, while the 7^th plays downhill to a green encircled by water and fronted by huge rocks.

It would have been remiss to come all this way and not try your hand at fishing or gazing out towards the Arctic Circle, and we managed to squeeze both in. Cod fishing, I decided, was not for me despite some success, but looking out towards the Arctic Circle in the early hours in this land of the Midnight Sun I would recommend to anyone.

As we left for home, I was handed a supply of Benecta, which I’ve been taking for the best part of two months now, as have a number of other Golf Monthly-enlisted testers. In the coming months we’ll be getting their, and my, updates to see what effects this natural health supplement is having. I, like them no doubt, certainly wouldn’t mind defying my age.

+2 handicapper Darren Crabb shot the score in the Presidents Prize at Dartford Golf Club in Kent

Amateur Golfer Shoots 59 In Club Competition!

Darren Crabb shot the round of his life at his Dartford Golf Club in the Presidents Prize this week with a sensational 10-under-par 59!

The round consisted of five pars and four birdies on the front nine and four pars, four birdies and an eagle on the closing nine.

He is now the new Course Record holder at the Kent course with his 59 - that will take some beating!

Darren, aged 38, has been a Member of Dartford Golf Club some 26 years and plays once a week.

Darren met his wife Kelly, a former junior member, at the Club.

The pair have two children aged 5 and 7 whom already partake in the Junior academy, will they be able to beat their Dad's score one day?

Andy Hall General Manager commented on this wonderful achievement.

"59 is an amazing achievement and to achieve this at the age of 38 holding down a full time job and supporting his wife and young family makes this achievement extra special.

"Darren has managed to shoot 7 rounds under par this year and has reduced his handicap to plus 2. Darren just needs one good round to reach the dizzy heights of plus 3.
