More than three years after the previous iteration, Ecco has released the Biom H4 and it’s packed with updates, making it one of the best spikeless golf shoes on the market.

Straight away, the sportier and more athletic design is clear to see. This is thanks, in part, to the new Biom 2.0 last upon which the shoe is built that gives the toe section a more rounded look. It’s undoubtedly one of, if not the best-looking shoe the Danish brand has ever produced.

Not only does it look better, but equipped with Ecco’s new MTN Grip outsole, it also performs better.

Through three different zones, the new outsole delivers stability, durability and rotational support. Also featuring its signature Fluidform technology, we found the traction on offer was ample, as was the support provided by way of the eye-catching midsole inserts on either side.

These striking elements connect the sole of the shoe to the lacing system, giving a snug fit that feels like it has been tailored to your feet. While this provided an abundance of stability, it also encouraged more efficient movement and power generation from the ground up.

Premium Touches

As has come to be expected from Ecco, there is no shortage of quality on offer. The waterproof upper is made using Ecco’s micro-perforated and durable leather, meaning our feet were protected from outside water, while internal moisture was still able to escape.

The removeable, washable Ortholite foam inlay delivered excellent underfoot cushioning, making this an extremely well-rounded product.

Additionally, the lightweight nature of the Biom H4, coupled with the contemporary and understated design, means this shoe is more than suitable for wearing away from the course as well. This is something we hope to make more use of when the lockdown restrictions are relaxed.

Admittedly, it comes in at a premium price point, but justifiably so in our opinion. Made from the finest materials, and packed with performance, this could be your go-to golf shoe for seasons to come.

Danish brand Ecco Golf has unveiled the next generation of the hybrid performance with the introduction of the all-new Biom H4 shoe.

It has been over three years since the launch of the Biom Hybrid 3 shoe, undoubtedly one of Ecco's best golf shoes, and the Biom H4 provides a more sporty, athletic look aimed at the young and young-at-heart golfer but with performance remaining front and centre.

The Ecco Biom H4 is crafted on the new Biom 2.0 last, which offers a modern, updated look and a more rounded toe shape versus the popular S-Three shoe. Based on scans of over 1,000 golfers’ feet, it enables the foot to move naturally, close to the ground, and forms like a second skin around the foot.

The upper is crafted from embossed leather made in Ecco’s own tanneries for a premium, textured feel and features the Gore-Tex membrane for breathable, waterproof protection.

The new MTN Grip outsole includes three sections to provide the ideal blend of traction, stability, and rotational support as well as ground penetration and green friendliness.

Additionally, Ecco’s Fluidform Technology, a ‘state change’ process that uses specialised fluid materials to form around an anatomical last, ensures a finely-tuned balance of cushioning and rebound to deliver dynamic comfort.

Wrapping around the foot from the outsole to the midsole, the X-Tensa Invisible TPU element on the side of Biom H4 enhances stability by connecting the sole unit to the lacing system but still allowing the toes to move freely.

It also adds to the contemporary, premium design - with colour pops helping to create a vibrant aesthetic in certain styles.

A mesh-style collar provides comfort around the ankle for golfers that choose to play either with ankle socks or no socks at all.

A removable, washable Ortholite foam inlay sole provides long-term cushioning and superior breathability, plus the option of extra width when removed.

The new design comes in four colours for men (Black, White, Silver Grey and White/Concrete) and women (White, Limestone, Hibiscus and White/Silver Grey).

The Ecco Biom H4 shoe will go on sale in early March with an RRP of £160.

Ecco S-Lite

A casual knock with friends in the height of summer is often where the best memories are made. For this, you need a lightweight, casual pair of shoes that you can wear to the course and after the round while also not weighing you down unnecessarily.

They’re not waterproof, but frankly, these shoes aren’t designed for rainy days, plus Ecco has many other models in its range that will combat the elements, some with the bar-setting Gore-Tex membrane.

We like how the S-Lite is lightweight but also a far cry from the trainer style many other lightweight golf shoes on the market posses. They demonstrate how a lightweight shoe can still be classy and sophisticated while also offering performance golfers expect to help them hit the shots they’ll remember for a long time.

Danish shoe maker Ecco has unveiled the Street 10, a model that pays homage to the 10-year anniversary of the hybrid revolution sparked by Fred Couples, who famously wore the original Golf Street shoes at The Masters in 2010.

While Couples didn’t go on to win, sales of Ecco’s first hybrid shoe went through the roof and its pioneering concept altered the journey of golf footwear design. Ever since, golfers have grown to love the off-course versatility and added walking comfort that comes from a pair of spikeless golf shoes.

Current fans of Ecco shoes will admire what the brand has done with its latest hybrid offering while the impressive spikeless performance may also attract new golfers to the brand. The Biom Cool Pro is arguably one of the best-looking spikeless shoes on the market. We love the cross diamond pattern on the upper, the clever and effective design of the Gore-Tex surround as well as the subtle flashes of colour and traditional touches like the brown leather on the tongue.

The shape means there’s plenty of space in the toe section to enhance comfort, which is bolstered by the flexibility from heel to toe for walking comfort while being more rigid laterally to boost stability during the swing. The grip is surprisingly effective in different conditions and lies, allowing you to swing with full commitment from a stable base.

It is fairly firm feeling shoe underfoot, which does buck the trend of softer-feeling golf shoes we’re seeing out of the box these days, and the Gore-Tex surround on top of the outsole means you also feel quite high off the ground and is more difficult to keep clean after playing in muddy conditions.

But, it’s a relatively small price to pay for the excellent breathability and waterproof protection this unique feature provides, ensuring your feet stay dry and comfortable for the whole round. There's certainly a case for being able to wear them off the course too.

Many will remember the Cool Pro shoe for its eye-catching design that perhaps wasn’t to everyone’s taste. The Biom Cool Pro is unquestionably more refined visually and features the hybrid sole that offers the off-course versatility while still providing ample grip and golf-specific performance.

The fit is snug without feeling overly tight while underfoot, there’s a nice spring in your step from the rebound of the underfoot cushioning. There’s a nice combination of stability with flexibility and when testing in hot conditions, we didn’t notice a significant build up of sweat inside the shoe.

The Gore-Tex protection means your feet will stay dry when the weather takes a turn for the worst and the styling blends tradition with modern thanks to the rich two-tone Yak leather uppers with diamond perforations, the brown leather details and the range of colours available. There are also some reflective touches to enhance the sporty, athletic look.

Fergus Bisset travelled with Ecco to play Le Golf National and to get first-foot experience of the Danish brand’s latest and most high-tech golf shoe to date – the Ecco Biom Cool Pro.

It’s hard to believe that nearly a year has passed since Europe’s emphatic and thrilling Ryder Cup victory over the USA at Le Golf National in Paris.

Visiting the site of the historic triumph, having received a pep-talk in Europe’s hotel team room from 2018 captain Thomas Bjorn, its memory seemed even less distant, and this was heightened by the fact the facility and course remain heavily adorned with Ryder Cup flags, signs and banners.

Arriving by coach at the front of the modern clubhouse bedecked with team Europe and USA branding, you get just the vaguest sensation of the excitement and pressure the players must have felt last September – it’s rather exciting.

Luckily, the pressure on us was minimal as we arrived – the objective was simply to enjoy a round of golf over the memorable stadium layout and to put the new Ecco Biom Cool Pro golf shoe through its paces… quite literally.

I’ve always been a great admirer of Ecco shoes and that stems from an early trip I went on while working for Golf Monthly.

Over 10 years ago now, I travelled to the Ecco headquarters in Denmark to experience their “Cow to Shoe” programme.

Each of their employees goes through this when they start at the company and it’s designed to demonstrate how Ecco owns the whole process of manufacture, right from the tannery to the finished product.

By the end of it, you have made your own pair of shoes, witnessing what has gone in at every stage – you even stitch the leather yourself…

In my case this was done very badly and, as we completed a slightly rushed version of the programme, my shoes looked like a cross between Frankenstein’s monster and a pair of Krusty the Clown’s rejects.

But it was a very interesting process and it showed the huge levels of care, precision and pure quality that go into the manufacture of Ecco golf shoes.

Understanding the importance of the last, the sealing to ensure total waterproofing, the relationship between upper, midsole and outsole, it provided an excellent demonstration of the levels of technological innovation and craftsmanship that go into all Ecco shoes.

For this trip, the itinerary looked equally compelling, albeit with less sewing.

We were travelling to Versailles to meet Thomas Bjorn at the hotel where the European Ryder Cup team planned and then celebrated their memorable win last year. (The Waldorf Astoria which is supremely grand!)

Then we were heading to the site of that win to test Ecco’s latest and most advanced ever golf shoe. Yes, a tough gig.

Thomas was on great form and we’ll hear more from him in a forthcoming issue of Golf Monthly.

It was pretty cool listening him talk in the room where he had inspired the European side just 12 months earlier and, what made it more amazing for me as a student of history, was that this was also the room in which Clemenceau laid out the terms of the Treaty of Versailles 100 years ago.

Glancing round during our meeting to see the plaque commemorating that fact sent a shiver down my spine.

Not to say I was distracted, heaven forefend. I was taking a moment between speaking to Thomas and the presentation on the new Ecco Biom Cool Pro.

The idea behind this extremely technologically advanced shoe has been to combine a number of significant technologies developed by Ecco and to present them in a single product. Here’s the tech bit:

This is a hybrid golf shoe that leverages the proven benefits of the Biom and Gore-Tex Surround technology to deliver 360° breathable comfort round after round.

It’s built on Ecco’s Biom Natural Motion last to provide an anatomical fit supporting the natural form of your foot with a low-to-the-ground sole structure for enhanced ground responsiveness.

The pioneering Tri-Fi-Grip outsole is designed to provide stability, durability and rotational support and is intended to be wearable on and off the course.

A combination of the Gore-Tex Surround, and Ecco Golf’s refined T.PU Exhaust Grid built into the midsole allow fresh air to directly access the sole of the foot while simultaneously allowing heat and moisture to escape. This means it’s waterproof and it performs well in warm weathers. But, by keeping the foot supremely dry, it also helps feet stay warm in colder conditions.

The upper is durable thin Yak leather – very soft to the touch, plus the Gore-Tex Surround and a Neoprene wrap-around tongue. It’s a pretty sporty looking shoe but, to me, it still looks like a golf shoe.

I’m normally a bit of a puritan when it comes to golf equipment and shoes are no exception – generally something stiff and with a brogue is my go-to.

But I was feeling open to new possibilities in the grand Clemenceau room in Versailles and was excited to try the shoe on to see if it would be as comfortable, lightweight and supportive as the technology that had been explained would suggest.

The answer to that question is an emphatic yes. I actually couldn’t quite believe it when I first put it on. I’ve never felt a golf shoe quite like it. Straight out of the box it feels like it moulds to your foot, hugging where it should, supporting without undue pressure. Supremely light and springy to walk in and overall, just incredibly comfortable.

Given their on and off course versatility, there was no need to take the Ecco Biom Cool Pro shoes off (apart from going to bed) and I wore them pretty much for the rest of the trip.

The real test was to come at the iconic and somewhat daunting Le Golf National. With temperatures in the mid 30s and a long walk ahead of us – the Cool Pro needed to live up to name and reputation.

Having completed 18 challenging holes, only lost two balls in the abundant water hazards, drank approximately six litres of water, sweated roughly seven, I can confirm that these shoes are very impressive indeed.

The only part of me that wasn’t hot after 4.5 hours on French fairways was my feet.

Out of the box, there wasn’t a hint of discomfort, grip and traction were excellent, stability top-drawer and I was even getting used to the athletic styling by the end of the round.

Overall, there’s nothing negative to say about this shoe and I am a full convert. Having arrived back in the UK, I played a medal at my home club yesterday.

The stiff brogues remained in the boot and the Ecco Biom Cool Pros took their first stroll round Banchory GC. It won’t be their last.

Performance Summer shoes need to be light, comfortable and versatile and not many pull this combination off better than the new Ecco S-Lite. In fact, it’s one of the lightest golf shoes we’ve ever tested yet one that still doesn’t sacrifice the grip you need to perform.

Comfort comes from the light feel and the softness of the Yak leather. There isn’t a great deal of underfoot cushioning, but the wider fit and a snug heel shape ensure an enjoyable wearing experience from the first tee.

The flexible, low-profile design helps you to really feel those subtle bumps and mounds while also pushing the traction elements deeper into the ground for the grip you need when going after a big drive.

The six vibrant colour choices ensure you can choose a pair to match your outfit (they arguably go better with shorts) and they can be worn to and from the golf course too thanks to their traditional styling, which includes premium brown leather details.

This enhances their value for money, although £160 for a minimalistic, non-waterproof shoe seems a little on the steep side. But that's said, it's still one of our favourite spikeless shoes of 2019.

Ecco Golf has unveiled its lightest ever hybrid golf shoe. The new S-Lite comes in six different colours and represents a completely new design for the popular Danish brand.

The platform is based on the fundamental principles of a traditional racing flat, combined with lightweight performance not often associated with a leather shoe. The result is a design that fuses lifestyle and golf-centric performance.

To save weight in every available area, Ecco utilised the principle of ‘design by reduction’. From the outsole to the leather, designers considered where weight could be saved in every aspect, without compromising on comfort or performance.

Ecco Golf has unveiled several new additions to its spikeless Biom Hybrid 3 shoe family, with the Gore-Tex waterproof design now available in a variety of colour combinations for Spring/Summer 2019.

The three new colours of Dark Shadow, White and Olympian Blue bring the total available up to 11.

They also feature new Derby Cut laces, offering a sleeker aesthetic that hides more of the lace loops and gives the shoes a cleaner look.

All the Biom Hybrid 3 shoes feature the Tri-Fi-Grip outsole, which ensures multi-purpose zonal performance through three segments; one for stability, another for durability and a third for rotational support.

The zonal structure is a product of intensive research and data analysis in the ECCO GOLF Lab. Each is formed from ultra-durable T.PU, meaning the shoes can be worn on and off course without affecting performance.

Lead Designer Andrzej Bikowski looked for new ways to adapt the shoe to provide a fresh and eye-catching visual.

The leather is soft, supple and durable – there’s barely a mark on it after five rounds. We also noticed a reduction in the amount of dirt that clogged up on the outsole compared to traditional cleats – a nod to the Zarma-Tour spikes.

How we tested We played a round at Goodwood Golf Club wearing a pair of the BOA laced option (£200) to assess performance and also tested the non-BOA option in Orlando, Florida.

Styling It’s fair to say the designs will divide opinion but with so much choice in the line, ranging from clean and classic to outlandish, every taste should be catered for.

Performance Despite the wet and hilly terrain we tested on, the Biom Hybrid 3 more than held its own. They felt stable and gave us excellent grip from different lies.

It was interesting that Golf Monthly Editor Mike Harris found these to be extremely comfortable, while technical editor Joel Tadman didn't quite agree to the same extent. ECCO shoes have quite a unique shape, which for some may take some getting used to while others will instantly love the feel and fit out of the box.

There’s very good support and traction from a spikeless shoe on offer here. There were times when we were worried about going after a shot from a wet, sloping lie but we needn’t have been, as the Biom Hybrid 3 maintained our connection to the ground with ease.

Some of the styles have limited appeal and some may want a softer feeling shoe - there are many options that offer this for a lower price - but the Biom Hybrid 3 has a level of golf-specific performance that warrants the premium price. The upper feels soft and premium and provides the required year-round protection. As a bonus, minimal dirt gathered on the sole and they look at home off the course as well as on it.

Danish shoe brand Ecco has announced the signing of PGA Tour player Smylie Kaufman, who will wear the Classic Lux model as a brand ambassador

ECCO Golf has announced the signing of American PGA Tour player Smylie Kaufman as a brand ambassador.

Kaufman, who will compete in the new ECCO Classic Lux and showcase the company’s logo on his sleeve, burst onto the scene when he landed his maiden PGA Tour victory at the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open in 2015 with a spectacular final round of 61.

The 25-year-old Louisiana State University graduate turned professional in 2014, quickly advancing to the PGA Tour from the Web.com Tour.

We tested the wingtip version (RRP £110), which has a brogue-like persona that is arguably more appropriate in the clubhouse than on the course. But while it may not look like a typical golf shoe, there are plenty of features that make it feel and perform like one.

The multiple traction elements on the E-DTS outsole create a stable, firm and grippy platform from which to swing. Only the steepest of slopes in wet conditions are likely to cause you to lose your footing.

On top of this is a comfortable midsole. The shoe itself has quite an unusual shape in that it is quite wide in the mid foot and towards the toe area, which actually gives the toes a little more room to move for comfort while locking the heel in place to maximize performance when you swing.

Should you require even more width, you do have the option of taking the inner sole out but this does come at the detriment of a slight reduction in underfoot cushioning.

The leather on the upper of the wingtip version has a firmer overall feel than the sneaker style option. Even the laces have an unusual rough texture to them but with a proper pair of socks, they're still a joy to wear.

These sneaker-inspired golf shoes deliver eye-catching style on the fairways. But, they’re also extremely comfortable and they provide excellent support.

GM verdict Ecco’s focus for the Cage is stability when hitting shots, but also the need for comfort when walking between them. It is built on a completely new last and, as a result, has a different shape to the Biom models.

The cage-like structure, along with a rigid outsole in this area and what looks like a narrower fit, really do cement the heel’s position. The fit becomes roomier towards the toe area, providing relief as you stroll, while the soft leather enhances the overall experience.

The eight-cleat pattern not only offers excellent traction on different lies, but also encourages weight transfer through the ball with the way the cleats are positioned in the heel area for a right-hander.

The Caldera leather gives the shoe its matte, athletic look, and while it’s still arguably not Ecco’s best-looking shoe, the level of overall performance surpasses its more stylish spikeless designs.

The launch of four new Ecco Tour Hybrid Models coincides with increasing demand for classic leather uppers and an outsole that can be be worn both on and off the course.

The Ecco Tour Hybrid Spring/Summer 2014 models are offered in a new brogue version, as well a traditional, two-tone embossed saddle options.

Graeme McDowell will continue to wear Ecco footwear on the PGA and European Tours after signing a multi-year extension to his endorsement agreement.
