One of the big tech advances in the Darkspeed irons is the internal makeup of the club. Football, Bill Shankly once declared, is a simple game complicated by idiots. Well my name is Joe, and I am an idiot.

Golf has turned out to be a complicated sport for me – much more than I’d ever anticipated when taking it up. As it turns out, it’s also a lot harder than I thought it would ever be and, boy, do you need to invest serious time to make yourself better.

With a six-month-old son and full-time job, that hasn’t been quite as easy as I’d hoped – for some reason, “Goodbye, see you in four hours” doesn’t always go down especially well at home with the wife.

Since beginning this series with Cobra Golf, though, there’s absolutely no doubt that I’ve improved significantly; everything from basic posture to my swing is better than it was three months ago, thanks to the help of coach James Whittemore and my own practice.

The custom-fitted clubs have been an absolutely dream – hit them as sweetly as I know I can, and you’re still thinking about the connection hours later. There’s also a hell of a lot to learn, though, and it’s mostly swimming around my head: are my knees bent too much? Is my grip relaxed? Am I rotating enough? Am I snatching too quickly? What on earth are my wrists doing? Am I lined up properly?

So, going into my final round at the lovely Wellingborough Golf Club, there was the nagging sense that I wasn’t going to crack my 100 target – and on a tough course I've never played before with a slope rating of 139, perhaps not even my previous best of 115.

For starters, my two weakest areas just happen to be quite important: anything off a tee, and putting. With much more focus going into my irons and wedges, I hadn’t managed to learn a solid driver swing that was going to get me anywhere productive, nor had I put those valuable hours in on the putting green.

When you can’t consistently get a bit of distance up the fairway in a straight line, you’re a) immediately hampering yourself and relying on rescue shots from the off and b) that’s even if you avoid a penalty in the first place – especially on a course with only two par 3s. It’s not conducive to a good score and will hold me back until I can get it right.

But as I teed off (well, a 6-iron off the floor) on the opening hole, things didn’t begin too badly. If I could putt anything near half-decent, double-bogeys might become pars and the odd disaster hole (hello, that ten over there) could be reduced in severity.

Alas, my fatal mistakes – mainly overhitting on speedy greens I wasn’t used to – kept holding me back. Still, I improved as the front nine went on and actually ended fairly strongly. At the halfway mark I’d shot 56: not in 100 territory, but on to beat my best score at least, and looking to shave shots rather than limit damage. It wasn’t impossible.

But it’s amazing what this game can do to your head. Start thinking about the score and you’re in with a somehow-better-than- expected 66 on the back nine for a frustrating 122 finish. And yet strangely, I didn’t walk off the course with an impending sense of early retirement.

Quite the opposite, actually – I was only thinking about the positives. Some pretty good bunker work; mostly strong wedges; learnings about club selection around the green and how to create a divot. I’d got plenty of pointers on the day and I came away from Wellingborough with some incredibly useful takeaways for next time. I already knew where I was weakest, and it was exactly what stopped me carding a better score – cutting out three and four putts could have legitimately shaved off about 15 shots.

I’m constantly feeling like I could turn a corner at any moment, which I think is good because it suggests improvement. Once I get the right feelings and everything becomes a little more natural, I’m hoping to get much closer to my target of 100.

It’s all part of the journey ultimately, and no one thinks it’s easy – just speak to any club golfer who’s still constantly searching for something more. It can feel lonely when you’ve just chunked one into a bunker, but such is this game that’s become my new obsession. A game this idiot is trying to make much less complicated.

Cobra Releases New King Tec Hybrid

Cobra Golf has unveiled the new King Tec Hybrid, the newest addition to the King players' family of golf clubs.

The King Tec hybrid (RRP £239) is designed for the better players who seek a utility club that delivers reliably, consistent carry distances and enhanced forgiveness off the tee and on longer approach shots into par 5s.

The King Tec is the only hybrid in Cobra's line up to feature Pwrshell Face Design, a design that was recently featured in Cobra's latest Radspeed irons.

The design utilises a thin, forged 455 stainless steel L-cup insert that is hyper-flexible to promote faster ball speed and higher launch across the face.

Project Joe - Blog Entry 2: Can New Clubs Help?

You know you’ve got off to a rough start in golf when the clubs you bring along to a fitting are literally laughed out of the bag. 

Let’s just say that before I rocked up at the (mightily impressive, I should say) American Golf in Hemingford Abbots, my previous bunch were relics of a time gone by.

A set of cheap, chunky and weighted Regal irons bought approximately 15 years ago; a pair of curiously lofted hybrid clubs that were greeted like alien arrivals from another planet; a John Daly ‘grip it and rip it’ (now illegal) 540cc driver inherited even back then - best not even trying to guess how old that one is.

I ‘upgraded’ to a £15 Ram one from a bloke on Facebook, which at least fitted the tees at my local range. The bag: £5 from another commiserative seller online (but at least it has a functional [a] strap and [b] stand, unlike my previous one). 

So... in summary, not ideal.   

I’d got absolutely no idea what to expect from a fitting, having never done one before, but the prospect of upgrading to some tools I wasn’t immediately ashamed of was a rather exciting one. Certainly, the Cobra fitter Billy Whiteman’s pity for my Daly antique suggested that the only way was up. 

One thing I did have in mind going in was the possibility of moving to one-length clubs. For a beginner like me, I thought they might help – the idea of removing some of the uncertainty when clubs get shorter (a big issue for me up to this point) and trying to achieve some consistency that way.

By the end, Billy agreed: after we’d switched between shafts on a 7-iron, we settled on some steel Radspeed One Length irons which were still immediately lighter than my old lumps. Given that my arms are more teenager than Tiger, being able to achieve a faster swing speed with a club far less clunky will surely help in the long run.

When it came to the driver, we took off some length in a bid to narrow my range of fade and strike the ball better. Despite the shorter shaft, my distance increased considerably, along with my confidence.

To close the gap between irons and driver, meanwhile, we trialled a hybrid but ultimately settled on a 5-wood with weighting in the right places – all in the name of taming that natural shot shape a little more. 

As it turned out, you don’t really know what a nice shot feels like until you’ve used some nice new clubs. Immediately, I got more distance with the Cobra clubs – the ball flew off the clubface in a completely different way to my tired old ones, making for a massively more satisfying experience all around (when my swing went right, that is).

I knew I’d struck balls at Hemingford like a bloke with his eyes sewn shut, but couldn’t wait to see what a difference the new clubs would make. A few weeks later, like a kid who’s just been told they’re off to Disneyland, I was able to find out for the first time when my custom set was delivered.

Playing nine holes, the driver was an immediate success. A couple of weeks earlier, I’d played one last (if only second ever) round with my old clubs – a miserable disaster in wind and rain – and abandoned the driver on the back nine completely in favour of my mate’s 4-iron. I couldn’t have hit the ball straight that day if it was being sent down a drainpipe.

Fast-forward a couple of weeks, though, and the game had changed – the Radspeed XD driver felt different from the start and instantly gave me more confidence. The first tee shot went beautifully straight and I didn’t duff it off the tee with that club from there on. 

I’m still getting to grips with the wedges – the nature of one-length clubs means a bit of a mentality shift for the ‘shorter’ ones in that respect – but a bit more practice will do a world of good there. Otherwise, though, I’m very confident that my new Cobra clubs will be literal game-changers once I start getting down the range more and trying to nail a consistent swing.

There are still teething issues that only magic fairy dust could fix otherwise (or failing that, my new coach James), but the road ahead certainly looks much brighter. Unless you’re a seller of golfing tat on Facebook Marketplace, that is.

The announcement sees Cobra enter the putter market with the new King 3D Printed Series and the new King Vintage Series.

Cobra Introduces Two New Putter Ranges

Cobra is making a triumphant return to the putter market with two new ranges of putters, the King 3D Printed Series and the King Vintage Series.

After giving us a glimpse of the unique route it was planning to go down in 2020 with the limited edition SuperSport-35, Cobra has now unveiled its full offerings to be launched in June 2021.

The King 3D Printed Series (RRP £349) is Cobra's first complete line of 3D printed, multi-material putters that feature a 3D printed nylon lattice cartridge created in partnership with HP's multi-jet fusion printing technology.

Cobra's partnership with HP began with the creation of 2020's SuperSport-35 putter, and the two companies have been working together since to move from an aluminium Metal Jet printing process to a nylon Multi Jet printing process to help capitalise on the weight saving benefits of nylon in a putter head.

What Cobra and HP has created in the process is a 3D printed lattice structure that optimises weight distribution within the putter chassis to deliver a high MOI for enhanced stability and roll performance.

Coupled with this, Cobra has partnered with SIK Golf to employ its patented Descending Loft Technology (DLT), which features four descending lofts on the face to produce consistent launch angle and roll for different putting styles and stroke consistencies.

Cobra engineers used SIK's DLT to create Cobra's own version in a 6061 aluminium insert which gives the advantage of weight savings and a soft feel at impact.

The King 3D printed series come in three distinct heads: the King GrandSport-35; King SuperNova and King Agera.

The King GrandSport-35 is a blade model, with 35° of toe hang ideal for the golfer with a slight arc in their putting stroke.

The King SuperNova features an oversize fang design while the King Agera features an oversize mallet shape with an MOI of over 7600, making it one of the most stable putters on the market today.

The King GrandSport and King Agera are also both available in a 41" armlock version where the SIK face insert features a higher descending loft than the non-armlock models.

All shapes of the King 3D Printed Series putters come with a lightweight polyurethane Lamkin Sinkfit grip with Cobra Connect sensors powered by Arccos Caddie embedded.

Alongside the launch of the King 3D Printed Series, Cobra has launched the King Vintage Series of putters (RRP £199) for golfers seeking a more traditional look.

The King Vintage Series of putters feature a steel chassis, simple sightlines for alignment and a black and turbo yellow colour scheme.

With multiple shapes, hosels and an adjustable weighting system, the Vintage family has a variety of options for any putting stroke.

The Vintage family shares the same 6061 aluminium face insert that the 3D Printed family utilises, with SIK's DLT that features the four descending lofts on the face to produce more consistent roll trajectories.

The four available heads in the Vintage family are the blade style Sport-45 and Sport-60; a mallet Torino (not available in the UK); a fang shape mallet Nova and Nova-40 and an oversize mallet in the Stingray and Stingray-40.

In the first blog entry for our Project Joe series with Cobra Puma Golf, beginner Joe Brewin explains the state of his game and gets a much-needed lesson

Project Joe - Entry 1: Me And My Golf Game

The cameras are set. A crowd is gathered. There’s one final warm-up swing towards the early-morning sun, before I set my stance and prepare to take aim. The fairway is wide open for a straight drive down the middle, begging for an easy stroke to send the little white ball in front of me serenely towards safety. A good start. Easy life.

As is so often the way in golf, though, reality is rarely anything close to the dream (at least in my world). This is the 16th hole at Girton Golf Club, Cambridgeshire – and I am about to embarrass myself.

Reality No.1: the ‘crowd’ is three strong, consisting of a Golf Monthly staffer, our patient cameraman for the day and my even more patient new coach, James Whittemore. Reality No.2: as I swing back, the brainworm ingrained within every beginner golfer niggles away – I’ve got no idea what might happen next.

Wild ‘fade’? Awful slice? God forbid, a good one where I actually want it to go? A troubling top? Reality No.3: it’s the latter. I watch the ball scuttle off left into the undergrowth, and know this is going to be a long morning for everyone concerned. Worse, I reload and do exactly the same thing again. At least we find that one.

As I hack my way to the end of the hole, not a clean strike in sight, the brainworm quickly wins out. As a novice, I know I’ve got no right to be annoyed by my incompetence, but when you’ve previously been striking 60-70 per cent of your shots with a modicum of respectability at the range, it’s demoralising. The course is very different, though: different lies, different conditions, a different mindset... a greater chance of cocking it all up.     

Before I go on, a quick potted history: by day I’m the deputy editor of FourFourTwo magazine, and newly a father of one. (Full-time job, newborn, trying to get better at golf? Good one.) I started playing last July, since when I’ve been to two group lessons and had three solo lessons at the tail end of 2020.

The latter at least stopped me hooking the ball with every depressing stroke, but as I’d later find out, also taught me an unhelpful habit. Either way, moving to a new city and a third lockdown put paid to any more progress there. I’ve played one and a half rounds of golf in total: rough average score around 120 over 18 holes. Really putting the ‘project’ in Project Joe, basically.

When I hop into the buggy with James after the travesty of our first assessment hole, I’m heartened by the fact he’s quickly spotted a pattern of doom. My bad shot throughout was a top – arguably the most humiliating blunder stroke, just behind your classic swing and miss – and largely down to one (very crucial) thing: poor posture.

It’s a big one, and nobody in previous tutorials had ever mentioned it to me before. Perhaps they were getting there, avoiding too much too soon – but either way, it was going to change my entire feel when it came to swinging a club. We keep the tutorials relatively light from there until a lesson after our final hole.

Aiming at some bunkers on the left down the par five (on a good day, my natural shot is a fade) the connection is sweet much to everyone’s amazement and the ball goes exactly where I’d hoped, albeit finishing on an unfortunate slope that makes the second shot awkward. After a wayward hybrid off the deck, we practice some approach shots and chips from the edge of the green, with James tweaking as we go.

Nearly everything I do from here is different – it’s an unenviable task to fix basically everything, but there are chinks of light early on. It's proof why getting lessons with a good tutor from the beginning is the right way – only someone with a trained eye who knows what they’re on about can fix your swing, not Johnny Vloggins from YouTube.      

In the 30-minute lesson that follows, James suggests six manageable changes almost immediately: my ball position (further back – my brain plays tricks with me here); my club position (ball closer to the toe, face more upright); a stance that involves i) less knee bend, ii) more bum thrust and iii) getting right over the ball; a proper, committed follow-through with my back foot swivelled. Throughout the day there’s no immediate success – he’s not magic, but it’s an important start. 

The short-term goal is to break 100, which will be well in sight if I can achieve the basic task of getting balls off the ground consistently. That (shockingly!) wasn’t always the case when I last played 18, leading to some wayward 10+ holes which obliterated my scorecard.

I’m keeping in contact with James as we go, with the aim of eventually getting in two range trips per week. I like the idea of being disciplined – i.e. enough focus on the short game, rather than mindlessly punting driver and iron shots – with at least one putting session as part of that.

There are three models within it and while the Radspeed model was the longest overall thanks to the low spin it provides, it was the Radspeed XB that got the nod for our Editors Choice Awards. Why?

Well the XB stands for Xtreme Back because of the large amount of weight positioned in the rear of the head along with two front weights towards the heel and toe.

Radical design

The concept starting out was to significantly increase something called the radius of gyration, which is the distance from the club’s centre of gravity to each weight location, to produce extra yardage through lower spin, faster ball speeds and more forgiveness.

The Radspeed XB driver features an oversized address profile and we found it to still offer relatively low spin and competitive ball speed along with excellent forgiveness.

Full of forgiveness

As a result, we felt like we could really go after drives not worrying too much about achieving a centred strike because help was on hand should we miss the middle. The shelf appeal of this driver is through the roof. It is unquestionably the coolest looking driver on the market this year but doesn’t prioritise style over substance. The sole shape has changed from the Speedzone – It’s narrower and has a little less camber, making it less cumbersome. You can no longer see the back of the sole behind the topline at address on the mid irons too, which is a definite improvement. 

Overall, it’s a modern-looking iron that sits attractively behind the ball and in the bag.

The feel and sound is excellent. It’s even better than the Speedzone and that’s saying something because the King Speedzone was one of the hottest, best-feeling irons in the distance irons category. 

The Radspeed certainly has a quieter sound to it though, largely down to the 3D printed medallion. It contributes to a softer feel, while still offering plenty of zing from the face.

Impressive Ball speeds

In testing, we found the Radspeed iron nearly 2mph faster off the face than the Speedzone it replaces – that equated to an extra five yards of carry, on average. The extra performance Cobra has managed to unlock is highly impressive.

The option of the One Length set configuration as well as the Cobra Connect as standard provide greater scope for improvement through more consistent swings and performance analysis respectively.

Pound for pound, the Radspeed is definitely one of the best game improvement irons on the market right now and well worthy of selection here.

Cobra has launched its latest generation of the popular T-Rail irons, a full hollow set of irons that utilises a unique hybrid-iron shape and advanced Baffler Rail technologies.

The design of the T-Rail iron creates the optimal blend between distance and extreme forgiveness, taking the game improvement category of iron to the next level.

The T-Rail hybrid-irons combine the best attributes of a hybrid and an iron in one easy-to-hit golf club, ideal for beginners or those seeking even more forgiveness from a one-of-a-kind set of irons.

The men's T-Rail graphite 7-piece transition set (RRP £849) is available in dual PVD chrome and black finish, offers a 4-hybrid and 5-PW hybrid-irons in right handed or left handed options.

Cobra has launched its King Cobra Snakebite wedges with new groove technology engineered to maximise spin and precision around the greens.

Cobra has launched the new King Cobra Snakebite wedge, aimed at helping golfers create more spin and more 'bite' around the green.

The wedges use Cobra's new Snakebite groove technology which utilises a cutting method that replaces the cutting tools more often to tighten groove tolerances, maximise groove volume and create the sharpest grooves possible.

The new Snakebite groove design has increased groove depth by 11% and has sharpened edges by 40% to deliver maximum spin to the ball.

Cobra has also employed a progressive groove system throughout the new Snakebite wedge that utilises progressive groove lengths and progressive groove shapes to optimise spin in each individual loft available.

The 48-54 degree lofts feature a traditional groove length and each groove is narrower and deeper to deliver consistent spin and trajectory on the wedges that are traditionally used with a square or de-lofted face.

Meanwhile, the 56-60 degree lofts have full-face groove length while each groove is wider and shallower to maximise spin on shots played with an open face when the ball is more likely to hit higher and more toward the toe of the clubface.

The new King Cobra Snakebite wedges are available in three grinds: versatile grind; classic grind and widelow grind.

Versatile grind - available in all lofts - is an all-rounder grind ideal for medium to firm course conditions and features toe, heel and trailing edge relief.

Classic grind - available in 52°, 56° and 60° lofts - features a progressive sole width from heel-to-toe with trailing edge relief, ideal for a golfer who has a slightly steeper swing who plays on a variety of turf conditions.

Cobra Golf has today unveiled its new King Copper iron series, introducing a stunning new copper finish in its popular player's irons.

Inspired by Rickie Fowler, the family debuts a new addition to its player's iron lineup with the King RF Forged MB, an evolution of the limited edition RF Proto irons introduced earlier this year.

Additionally, a new copper finish to the popular King Forged Tec irons has been introduced for those players who put a premium on distance while still desiring the precision and feel of a compact iron shape.

The new copper versions of both of these new irons offer the same performance technologies as the chrome models in a premium copper finish that is sure to turn heads on the course.

Each clubhead in the new King RF Forged MB is forged five times out of 1025 carbon steel to deliver the softest feel desired by the best players.

Replacing the King Speedzone range comes a more radical design shift from Cobra in the form of the new Radspeed metalwoods and irons.

The new name comes from the Radial weighting, whereby the distance between the front and back weights has been increased to create a more optimum blend of faster ball speed with low spin and forgiveness to maximise performance for all player types.

In the three Radspeed drivers, Cobra has managed to significantly increase something called the radius of gyration, which is the distance from the club’s centre of gravity to each weight location, to produce extra yardage in different ways.

The 460cc Radspeed driver is for higher-speed swingers who want distance through faster ball speeds, low spin and trajectory control. It has forward-biased weighting with 28g positioned in the front, (16g fixed, 12g adjustable) and 10g in the back (8g fixed, 2g adjustable). The two adjustable weights can be interchanged to fine-tune the desired launch and spin performance.

The Radspeed XB (Xtreme Back) is for players who want distance through consistency across the face in the form forgiveness and stability. It features an oversized address profile and 20g of weight positioned in the back (14g fixed and a 6g interchangeable weight) and 8g of fixed weight in the front, making it arguably Cobra’s most forgiving driver to date.

Finally, there’s the Radspeed XD (Xtreme Draw), a new addition for 2021 for golfers who want distance by reducing their slice or creating a draw through heel-biased weighting with forgiveness.

All three drivers continue to feature Cobra’s CNC Milled Infinity Face, which produces more precise thicknesses and bulge and roll qualities for forgiveness on off-centre hits. They all also use a lighter T-Bar Speed Chassis and a 30 per cent thinner Carbon Fibre Wrap Crown to save 13g (7g in the chassis and 6g in the carbon) that has been repositioned forward to lower the CG and produce more speed.

Complimenting the Radspeed drivers are a quartet of fairway woods and two hybrids that also benefit from a thinner carbon crown and radial weighting. Each fairway and hybrid features Cobra’s signature Baffler Hollow Split Rails, which increase flexion on the leading edge by 70 per cent to increase speed while still providing excellent turf interaction.

The standard Radspeed fairway features a CNC Milled Infinity Face for the first time as well as 16g in the front and 7g in the back to deliver low spin with high launch and forgiveness. It is also available in two colourways of gloss black or turbo yellow.

There’s also a slight fighting Radspeed Draw, oversized Radspeed Big Tour and more compact Tour five wood in the range while the Cobra Radspeed hybrids are also available in One Length to compliment the One Length irons in a combo set.

The concept of the new Radspeed irons is similar to the metalwoods - position more mass low in the heel and toe to lower the CG while dramatically improving the stability of the clubhead. A 10g screw-in weight, which can be altered to change swing weight, is positioned in the toe and 3g of mass is positioned in the heel to create the best combination of low CG, and high MOI for the fast ball speed and high launch.

In addition, the irons feature a unique Carbon Fibre Topline that saves 2g to lower the CG and improve launch and spin characteristics with a new black cosmetic to create the appearance of a thinner topline for a sleeker profile at address.

Following on from Cobra's new 3D printed putter, the irons also feature the first ever 3D printed nylon medallion utilizing an intricate lattice structure to save weight and fine-tune feel.

The Radspeed irons are also available in One Length, with all the irons 37.5” in length to promote a repeatable setup and swing for more consistency and accuracy. Fine-tuned lie angles and progressive sole widths and shaft weighting promotes consistent ball flights and proper distance gapping through the set.

The entire Radspeed family is equipped with Cobra Connect Powered by Arccos sensors in the grips that automatically record the distance and accuracy of every shot so golfers can track performance and use analysis to improve practice. Cobra hasn’t launched a putter in a long while, so if it was going to return to the category it was always going to do it with a bang. Step up the new King Supersport-35 putter, the first in what looks to be a line of revolutionary products featuring 3D Printing technology.

The oversized blade has been developed over the past two years in collaboration with teams at HP and Parmatech, more as a showpiece of what is possible in the future. It features a fully 3D printed metal body with an intricate lattice structure to optimize weight distribution and deliver the highest-possible MOI in a blade shape.

With its quicker processing time, and greater design freedom, using 3D printing meant that Cobra was able to design, prototype, and test multiple iterations and bring the product to market much faster than traditional manufacturing methods. Because of this, Cobra has plans to launch two additional products in 2021 that feature 3D printed technology.

Additionally, the putter features a face insert designed in partnership with SIK Golf, the brand of flagstick in the bag of Cobra staffer Bryson DeChambeau. It utilizes the company’s patented Descending Loft Technology (DLT), where levels of the face increase in loft from bottom to top (1°, 2°, 3° and 4°) to create the most consistent launch and accurate roll on every putt.

The DLT technology has been reengineered into an aluminium face insert. This insert strategically saves weight from the front of the putter to be repositioned in the heel and toe and tunes the feel to a slightly softer feel than a traditional all-steel SIK putter face. A plumber neck hosel with a 35-degree toe hang suitable for slight arc putting strokes.

“HP’s 3D printing technology allows us to utilize a complex lattice structure to remove weight from the centre of the putterhead and push significant amounts of weight to the perimeter,” said Jose Miraflor, Vice President of Marketing, Cobra Golf.

“The result is superior MOI levels and massively increased stability and forgiveness. So not only is the 3D production method more consistent but it also allows us to design products in a new and superior way.”

The King Supersport-35 putter has only been made available in very limited quantities in 34”, RH only and an RRP of £349. A Lamkin Sinkfit Smart Grip with Cobra Connect provides enhanced feel and key weight savings.

The new Cobra King Tour MIM irons revealed today promise unmatched feel and consistency thanks to a special manufacturing technique

Cobra has expanded its King family of players’ irons with the launch of the King Tour MIM iron.

It boasts a tour cavity back shape and is manufactured using Metal Injection Molding (MIM) to deliver the most precise shaping with the soft feel that better players desire. It follows on from the brand's King MIM Wedges, which used the same technique, in an attempt to reinvent the way premium irons are created.

MIM manufacturing produces a more precise finished product utilizing fewer steps and minimal hands-on post-process polishing, unlike traditional forging and casting processes.

Each iron head is created using a mixture of 304 stainless steel metal powder, which is then heated and injected into a mold. During the sintering process, the metal is heated to a higher temperature than forgings (1340°C vs. 1200°C), resulting in a tighter-aligned grain structure that delivers the highest level of precision and soft feel.

The final step is hand-polishing to deliver the perfect satin finish. While many forgings require moderate polishing to remove excess materials, MIM technology requires only subtle polishing to ensure the shape is consistent from set to set.

In addition to the MIM process, the new King Tour irons incorporate a tungsten weight in the toe that better positions the centre of gravity behind the hitting zone for better feel and added stability, assisted by a TPU insert that dampens vibrations.

The irons also feature Cobra Connect Arccos system that utilizes Smart grips on each iron that sync with the Arccos Caddie app to give users the ability to track their shot data so they can improve faster. The purchase of each set of King Tour irons includes a 90-day free trial of the Arccos Caddie app.

“We’ve used our MIM process over the past two years to deliver softer and more precisely-shaped designs in our wedges,” said Tom Olsavsky, Vice President of R&D for Cobra Golf.

Cobra King Utility Irons 2020 Revealed

Cobra has unveiled a pair of new utility irons said to deliver improved distance with a classic look and modern technology.

Seemingly part of the King Forged Tec iron family, the King Utility iron and One Length version are designed for players who seek control on tight tee shots and longer approach shots.

A classic, muscleback iron shape delivers the feeling of controlled ball flights, while a wider sole and hollow body provides stability, power, and a low centered CG for higher, stronger trajectories.

A Pwrshell face insert adds to the performance by expanding the size of the sweetspot for improved ball speeds on off-centre hits, launch efficiency and ball flight.

Cobra has integrated the MyFly8 hosel too, a series of eight adjustable loft settings that give users the ability to manage trajectory and launch for proper distance gapping.

Additionally, the King Utility irons are equipped with Cobra Connect Powered by Arccos Caddie, an artificial intelligence system that uses Smart Grips with embedded sensors to track and record distance and accuracy data on the Arccos Caddie app.

Tungsten weighting inside the hollow heads increases the stability of the clubhead.

The King Utility is also offered in a One Length configuration, while sharing the technologies of its variable-length counterpart, is designed at 7-iron length (37.50”), making it complement any of Cobra's One Length iron offerings.

Having a constant length through the set promotes one repeatable set-up and swing for more consistency, while the head design and weighting are fine-tuned to provide uniformity of feel through the set. Traditional variable-length players can also benefit from the consistency and accuracy of the One Length Utility iron.

The King Utility irons will be available from June 12 with an RRP of £179 in a Project X Catalyst 80 graphite shaft and £169 in a KBS $-Taper lite steel shaft and a Lamkin Crossline Connect Blue grip.

We test the three Cobra King Speedzone fairway woods, assessing the effectiveness of the split Baffler sole rails and CNC milled face.

Cobra King Speedzone Fairway Woods Review

Cobra has been a popular choice in this category for many years, mostly because of the effective Baffler rails on the sole that help to improve turf interaction.

These continue on the new King Speedzone models, but have been split and hollowed out in certain areas to assist with face flexing and speed while still preventing the leading edge from digging. They are also different depths depending on what model of the three you choose, be it the standard, tour or big tour.

We tested all three on a launch monitor and then off grass on a driving range and we love the clean strikes you can achieve, even with the ball sitting down slightly. It pops the ball up nicely, helping achieve longer carries when you were expecting the ball to come out flat.

They have distinct looks too. The standard model is arguably most appealing visually behind the ball, given the tour model is especially compact at address, probably the smallest you’ll find on the market and not for the faint hearted.

The big tour is probably one of the biggest and with its stronger lofts is certainly better suited to hitting shots mostly off the tee when your driver is misbehaving. Because of its larger size (173cc), it produced the highest ball speed and distance of the three along with the lowest spin. In fact, it was the longest fairway wood of any on test with an average carry of 255 yards - very impressive.

The standard model averaged 243 yards in carry, even in a slightly lower 14.5° loft, hurt by the relatively high spin it produced at 3470 rpm. The tour model averaged 247 yards for us on a slightly lower flight.

The tour model, with its forward CG, was also quite low spinning certainly the most workable. While it really flew out of the middle, it struggled on mishits to maintain carry distance and accuracy.

The standard model will suit the majority, and although it spins a little more than most fairway woods, through a fitting they should be able to find a balance between flight and distance that works for them. Off-centre forgiveness also impressed, along with the forgiveness through the turf we’ve already spoken about.

Rickie Fowler To Debut New Cobra Rev33 Irons

This Sunday, some of golf’s biggest names will be back playing live on our television screens for the first time since the first round of the Players Championship back in March.

Rory McIlroy, Dustin Johnson, Matthew Wolff and Rickie Fowler will be teeing it up at TaylorMade’s Driving Relief charity event at Seminole Golf Club in a refreshing skins format with no caddies.

Fowler, who plays the TaylorMade TP5x Pix ball, will also be using a new set of irons in the bag for the event. They’re called the Cobra RF Rev33 irons and get their name from the fact that 33 revisions were made to the design before Fowler was content with the end result.

This season, Fowler has been using a set of RF prototype blades with a chrome finish, but the new irons feature a bronze-gold coloured PVD finish, chosen from a choice of 30 metal swatches and unlike anything else on the market.

McIlroy is one player that commented on social media about the compact look of Fowler’s RF prototype irons, especially in the longer irons. In fact, the overall concept came from Fowler’s love of the look of a bladed 7-iron and how he wanted all the other irons in the set to look similar.

“I remember him telling me, ‘I really love the 7-iron, it’s the best-looking club in the set,'” Ben Schomin, Cobra’s tour operation manager, told GOLF.com.

“But to him, everything below the 7-iron didn’t look nearly as good in the address position. So we built the set around that one club in particular, trying to give those clubs in the bottom of the set a similar look.”

Other distinguishing features are the completely flat topline and the lack of any visible offset.

The lack of offset comes from a parallel hosel transition that differs from the standard tapered transition where the hosel is thickest in the upper section and thins out going into the grooves.

Fowler is also know to have used tungsten weight plugs in previous irons and they also feature within his Cobra Rev33 irons.

One Length

The Speedzone One Length irons feature fine-tuned lie angles and progressive shaft weighting to optimise launch and forgiveness in the long irons, and lower launch with more control in the scoring irons.

One-length irons allow you to stand to the ball in the same way regardless of the iron you’re using, helping with consistency of strike and club speed. Essentially you can swing the same way regardless of what club you have in your hand. Bryson DeChambeau makes it work pretty well and, if you struggle for consistency with your iron play, it could also work for you.

In our big 2020 fairway wood test, the King Speedzone models came out ahead of everything else when it came to turf interaction. Those rails make the club less prone to digging - especially with the ball sitting down a little - and pleasingly forgiving on slightly heavy strikes. If you use your fairway woods more from the fairway than the tee, King Speedzone is definitely one to consider.

Compact Tour model

Our personal preference is for a more compact look over the ball, and the King Speedzone Tour model is one of the most compact on the market. With the centre of gravity further forward, this model kept our spin rates 700rpm lower than the standard King Speedzone. That was perfect for our game, but it may well be different for you depending on your swing and clubhead speed.

The Big Tour model actually spun even less and carried the furthest of all clubs we tested, so if you're not averse to a larger clubhead off the deck, that might be the one for you. The fact that all King Speedzone clubs feature Cobra Connect shot-tracking technology Powered by Arccos for post-round performance and statistical analysis is another real plus.

With the King Speedzone Hybrid, Cobra has created a supremely versatile club that will suit golfers seeking a powerful ball flight and heightened forgiveness.

Whether from the tee, the fairway or escaping the rough, the hybrid has become a fixture in most modern golfers’ bags. The King Speedzone is one of the best on the market this season.

Editor's Choice 2020

With four lofts available, it’s slightly larger than the average hybrid but this doesn’t mean it’s not playable or useable for the low handicapper.

A weight has been placed into the back of the club to create a higher launch and we definitely noticed this in testing. The ball flight is impressive, and we were pleased with the soft landings we were achieving, even from significant distance out.

The King Speedzone hybrids are available in variable and one-length options and feature a hollow split rail system that allows for more flex than solid rails, again for higher launch and increased distance.

Nice curves

The King Speedzone offers a slightly more curved, pear-shaped look than many modern hybrids but that was something we found appealing when addressing the ball. The slightly larger head size inspires more confidence than in some recent models that often look more like an oversized iron.

The sound and feel off the face are strong but, even with off-centre hits, you feel that you’re getting the very most out of the shot. The claim of a 70% larger hot spot area is well supported.

Built in technology

The hybrid features Cobra Connect which is an Arccos sensor that allows you to track your performance patterns using the Arccos caddy app. It’s a nice touch that adds to the overall offering.

Overall, this is a powerful club delivering a strong ball flight and consistent forgiveness.

Cobra King Speedzone Driver

The King F9 driver delivered a tremendous success story for Cobra and it secured their place as a major player in the driver market. With the King SZ or Speedzone driver, Cobra has taken another step forward and it was an easy choice to include this impressive club in the 2020 Editor’s Choice list.

Editor's Choice 2020

Like the F9, the design of the SZ has been influenced by fast cars and it’s certainly a sleek and speedy looking club. Set behind the ball, the aesthetics are cleaner than its predecessor. It sits comfortably at address and we feel it’s easier to get the alignment spot on.

Power comes from the new CNC Infinity Milled Face that optimises thickness as well as bulge and roll for a more consistent flight and distance. A new streamlined Titanium T-Bar Speed Chassis and the carbon wrap crown allow more weight to be redistributed low and back, and around the perimeter. In total 69 grams is repositioned in the SZ compared to 40 grams in the F9.

Improved aerodynamics in the SZ have been introduced to reduce drag and to maximise clubhead speed.

Excellent efficiency

In testing, we found that the King SZ delivered enhanced efficiency in terms of converting clubhead speed into ball speed. We also felt it was more forgiving on the off-centre strikes than the King F9. Those slight mishits were not so harshly punished either in loss of distance or direction.

Spin control

With two interchangeable weight options of either 2 or 14 grams, it’s easy to optimise launch and reduce spin rate depending on individual requirements and technique. Get the weighting right, with the correct shaft option and the SZ delivers an excellent, low-spinning ball flight that will help a broader range of golfers achieve greater consistency from the tee.

Cobra King Forged Tec Iron Review

GM Review

This is Cobra’s foray into the compact, hollow distance iron category, aimed at golfers that want an iron that looks like a blade but has the firepower and forgiveness of a game-improvement iron.

It certainly ticks the box visually, combining polished and more satin areas on the back with bold graphics and a blade-style appearance. Down behind the ball the darker hitting area frames the ball perfectly and the shape and size should suit the tastes of a range of handicaps. This is a great looking iron at address. The generous face size and topline makes it look easy to hit, but the minimal offset gives it that players’iron feel.

Strike a few balls away and the feel impresses too. This doesn’t have the harsh, clicky sound of a distance iron of yesteryear, more the powerful thud sound that is loud enough to provide feedback on the strike without overpowering the ears.

The 7-iron is fairly strong at 29.5° and testing on the Foresight Sports GCQuad launch monitor, we didn’t quite get the returns in ball speed and distance we were hoping for. Ball speed topped out at 125mph but averaged less than 124mph, with carries averaging 178 yards and peaking at 181 yards.

Admittedly, these carry distances were very consistent, which is reassuring, but the relatively low launch and spin might be a concern for golfers with slower swing speeds. The trajectory came out quite flat with these irons, with the peak height struggling to get over 30 yards, which affected carry distance and stopping power.

That said, a custom fitting could well provide an antidote for this, and we felt the stock KBS $-Taper Lite steel shaft we tested coming in at 115g was a strong performer – stable and light enough to help boost club speed without sacrificing control of the head.

Forgiveness off-centre was enough to minimize drops in ball speed on all but the worst of strikes and don’t forget these clubs come in One Length option and with Arccos Connect Smart grips, that allow you to track your performance should you wish.

Cobra King Speedzone Drivers Review

The King F9 was a big success story for Cobra so we were keen to discover how its replacement, the King Speedzone, stacked up. You can read all about the updated technology here.

We had an exhaustive testing session indoors on the Foresight Sports GCquad to gather data with both the Speedzone (SZ) and Speedzone Xtreme drivers and also tested them out on the course.

The King SZ is unquestionably a better looking driver – cleaner, easier to align with the infinity face and with a slick new alignment logo and graphics around the edges.

A quick glance at the numbers from the launch monitor, in the same 9° loft and Project X HZRDUS Smoke 6.0 shaft, suggested the performance was nigh-on identical between the old King F9 and new King SZ drivers.

Delve a little deeper into the data, though, and there were some more interesting findings to be had. In the exact same spec and with the weights in the low spin positions, we actually swung the King SZ driver more than 1mph slower than the King F9.

As you can see in the video, the strike location map was much more centred with the King F9, yet the launch monitor told us the King SZ was actually more efficient at translating club speed into ball speed.

It is impossible to tell why we swung the King SZ slower but if it was down to us, not the aerodynamics of the head, then there’s a case to be made that over a longer period of time, golfers should be able to get marginally more performance out of the new King SZ model. But perhaps the missing Aero Trips from the King F9 had an effect, who knows.

It also seemed to manage direction a little better overall - our misses were less punished in terms of direction.

In the same setting, the King SZ Xtreme driver didn’t quite deliver the ball speed and distance of the King SZ model for us thanks to the extra 400 rpm of spin but it did launch the ball higher, qualities that are ideal for golfers with slower swing speeds. Through a thorough fitting, we're confident either driver could be set up to perform depending on what you're looking for.

Sadly, for us the sound has taken a step back with the new model. It is now loud, higher pitched and quite overpowering, which is surprising given the addition of more carbon fibre on the head. We much preferred the duller, more softer sound and feel of the King F9.

The success of the King F9 Speedback driver cemented Cobra as a major player in the driver category but Cobra feels it has surpassed it with the launch of the King Speedzone range, which hits the shelves in January.

With design again influenced by fast cars, it has optimised six zones of performance on the new King Speedzone drivers to deliver even more speed and distance.

Power comes from the new CNC Infinity Milled Face that further optimises thickness as well as bulge and roll for a more consistent flight and distance. A new streamlined Titanium T-Bar Speed Chassis creates more discretionary weight while maintaining a strong structure designed to withstand high speed collisions.

A 360 Carbon Wrap Crown makes up 50 per cent of the driver body, providing ample support while saving 25 grams of weight that has been repositioned low and back and around the perimeter where it is needed most. In total, 69g of mass (versus 40g in the King F9 Speedback model) has been repositioned for more optimal launch and spin.

Optimised aerodynamics and shaping, including a raised front and rear skirt, help maximise clubhead speed by reducing drag.

Golfers also have two models to choose from in either yellow or white trim. The standard King Speedzone driver offers a traditional shape with front to back adjustable 2g and 14g weights to fine tune launch and low spin while the new King Speedzone Xtreme driver provides increased forgiveness on off-centre hits via an additional 17g fixed weight. The driver is also available in a shorter Tour length shaft (44.5”) with heavier sole weights.

Within the line-up, Cobra is offering golfers the choice of three new fairway wood designs. On all three, the sole rails have been split.

The front rails, silver in colour, have been hollowed out to create thinner walls that flex with impact while still preventing the leading edge from digging. The result is more flex for ball speed and higher launch as well as more club head speed through impact via a cleaner strike.

The King Speedzone Tour Fairway features a more compact shape with forward CG weighting designed for better players that desire low spin, a more piercing trajectory and workability.

The third fairway offering is the King Speedzone Big Tour Fairway, which features the largest profile, stronger lofts and forward CG weighting for fast ball speed and low spin. All three fairways boast a forged CNC Milled up to five times more precise than traditional hand polishing.

The King Speedzone hybrids are available in variable and one-length options and feature the same hollow split rail system that allows for more flex than solid rails for higher launch and increased distance.

Last but by no means least are the King Speedzone irons, said to deliver extra distance thanks to the first ever carbon fibre topline. Two strips of carbon fibre replace steel both on the topline and underneath the topline in the 4-7 irons, creating a new I-beam type of construction allowing for saved weight and structural soundness.

The wide body Speedback shaping returns to lower the CG and increase forgiveness while the Pwrshell face features an updated E9 structure that helps create more energy return through a deeper undercut channel.

Consistency of spin and flight is optimised by the progressive grooves that go from V-shaped grooves in the 4-6-irons to U-shaped grooves in the 7-PW.

The One Length set option boasts fine-tuned lie angles and progressive shaft weighting to optimize launch and forgiveness in the long irons, and lower launch with more control in the scoring irons and wedges.

All the King Speedzone clubs will employ Cobra Connect Powered by Arccos to track performance that can be analysed post round.

The Cobra King Speedzone range goes on sale January 24th 2020 with the following RRPs: Driver £349, Fairways £229, Hybrids £189, Irons £699 in steel, £799 in graphite.

The new Cobra F-Max Airspeed range is supposedly the company’s lightest, easiest to hit collection of clubs ever made.

Continuing its focus on weight-savings and forgiveness, the range of woods and irons for men and women maximize clubhead speed and distance for players with moderate swing speeds.

The F-Max Airspeed driver features a new carbon fibre crown, replacing the titanium crown on the previous F-Max Superlite driver, to save 10-grams of discretionary weight that can be re-distributed low and back in the clubhead to maintain a MOI of 5,000, delivering a clubhead that is two grams lighter without sacrificing stability and forgiveness.

A five-gram lighter Airspeed shaft, and six-gram lighter Lamkin midsize grip design yields 11 grams in weight-savings, bringing the total overall weight to just 285 grams - 13 grams lighter than its predecessor.

In addition, the F-Max Airspeed drivers utilize a new PWR Ridge design on the crown to assist with alignment and improved aerodynamics. Straighter, more slice-resistant shots, are made easier with internal, back/heel weighting and offset hosel design that delivers higher trajectories.

The Cobra F-Max Airspeed Fairways and hybrids employ similar weight-saving innovations as the driver, such as a new lightweight crown, and a five-gram lighter shaft. Additionally, a low profile, shallow face design lowers the CG for higher launch while back/heel weighting creates draw bias.

The F-Max Airspeed irons follow a similar concept, with a lighter shaft and grip helping slower swing speeds achieve more distance.

Maximum distance and forgiveness comes via a combination of a deep undercut cavity, low profile shape and stronger lofts throughout the set.

Having weight low and wide increases stability and forgiveness on off-center hits, while heel-biased weighting provides draw trajectory for increased accuracy and directional control.

Shorter hosels in the long irons deliver lower CG for higher launch and gradually increase in length through the mid-irons and wedges, delivering a higher CG for increased control and flatter trajectories in the scoring clubs.

The long irons feature more offset to increase accuracy and forgiveness, while the short irons and wedges feature progressively less offset for maximum control and precision around the green. A nickel, two-tone chrome plating provides a premium look and increased durability.

“Not a single aspect of club design was overlooked when we were trying to maximize the weight savings in this line,” said Tom Olsavsky, VP of R&D for Cobra Golf.

“We even use an unpainted shaft with clearcoat and a decal design to save two extra grams of weight over a typical painted shaft. That is a perfect illustration of the level of detail than went into making these clubs as lightweight as possible.”

Cobra Golf has today unveiled the T-Rail iron, its first, all-hollow iron-hybrid set in the super game-improvement category.

The T stands for Transitional and the irons are said to combine the forgiveness of a Cobra Baffler hybrid with the precision of an iron.

They fuse a hollow, hybrid shape with an iron face and topline, creating an iron-hybrid design that delivers a blend of distance, forgiveness and accuracy. A hollow body construction creates a lower, deeper CG than traditional cavity-back iron designs allow and makes getting the ball airborne and on the desired target line easier.

The Baffler Rails then enhance the turf interaction for more speed and stability out of every lie. A high-strength, forged steel face designed with E9 Technology features a thin pocket from heel to toe to enhance ball speed and distance on off-center hits.

“T-Rail irons make it easy for beginners and golfers who have lost some distance and control to gain the confidence needed to play better and have more fun,” said Tom Olsavsky, VP of R&D, Cobra Golf.

“Players who need max forgiveness and are looking for more distance will be amazed at how far and straight they hit these, even being able to get them airborne from tough lies.”

The innovative design of the T-Rail combo set combines a hollow, iron-hybrid construction in the 6-PW, SW with a 5-hybrid to make a seven-piece set for max forgiveness, high launch and improved gapping through the set. T-Rail Irons are available in both men’s and women’s set make-ups.

The T-Rail irons go on sale from November 15th with RRPs of IL £699 in steel and £799 in graphite shafts and a black/blue colorway. A 4, 5 and/or 6-hybrid are also available through custom. Cobra has revealed the next generation of King Forged Tec irons, drastically different by design compared to the previous iteration.

As you can see, the new iron boasts a traditional muscleback shape but in a hollow design said to provide the ideal balance of precision and distance.

Available in a variable or One Length set make-up, the hollow construction of the Forged Tec Irons delivers the low CG that helps maximize distance, forgiveness and playability. The cavity is infused with energizing foam microspheres that fine-tune acoustics and create the softer feel that better players desire while supporting a thin Pwrshell Face for increased ball speeds.

An updated forged face insert creates a larger Sweet Zone and return area for higher launch and faster ball speeds. Additionally, a tungsten toe weight centres the CG behind the hitting area to maximize distance and increase precision, even on off-centre hits.

Like the majority of Cobra clubs, the King Forged Tec irons will feature the innovative Cobra Connect Powered by Arccos, allowing users to track their accuracy and distance using the Arccos Caddie app on a smart device. Electronically embedded sensors in the Lamkin Crossline grips automatically record the distance and accuracy of every shot so golfers can track their improvements round-to-round.

The King Forged Tec One Length irons offer an added dimension of consistency, as Cobra engineers have manipulated the design of each iron to match the weight and length of a 7-iron, allowing for one simple, repetitive set up and swing motion to reduce variability and increase consistency between clubs. This is primarily achieved through matching 7-iron head and swing weights in every iron to create a consistent feel throughout the set.

Weight is added to the One Length long irons to compensate for shorter (37.50”) shafts and to match 7-iron swing weight, while weight is removed from the short irons and wedges to compensate for longer shafts while still delivering traditional 7-iron swing weight.

In addition, lie angles have been adjusted to optimize ball flight in a One Length set configuration. Long irons utilize more upright lie angles, while the short irons and wedges have slightly flatter lie angles delivering more consistent trajectory and ball flights. Lighter long iron shafts encourage easy launch while heavier wedge shafts promote more control into and around the green.

The King Forged Tec and King Forged Tec One Length irons are available from November 15^th with RRPs of £899 in KBS S-Taper Lite steel shafts and £999 with Project X Catalyst 80 graphite shafts.

New wedge design is the first in golf to benefit from a Metal-Injection-Molded process for more precise shapes and improved feel

Cobra King MIM Wedges Unveiled

The new Cobra MIM wedges are the first in golf to feature a fully Metal-Injection-Molded (MIM) 304 stainless steel head construction. This process allows for the most precise shape possible for improved feel and turf interaction in every loft.

Unlike forged wedges, MIM manufacturing reduces the amount of post-process polishing, where in the past, there was a heavy reliance on skilled machinists to grind consistent wedge shapes by hand.

Each Cobra MIM wedge is created using a mixture of 304 stainless steel metal powder, which is then heated and injected into a mold. Using a sintering process, the metal is heated to a higher temperature than forging (1340°C vs. 1200°C), resulting in a more even grain structure than forged and cast wedges and the softest feel.

The King MIM wedges are also the first in golf to utilise a fully robotic polishing process where the robot is pre-programmed to polish each wedge to exact specifications. This fully automated process eliminates variance in head weight and thickness and creates more precise grind shapes and more predictable bounce in each wedge.

Cobra’s latest wedges also feature a fully CNC milled face that maximises surface roughness and delivers precise lofts and groove shapes to optimise trajectory and spin performance.

You’ll also notice the radial CNC Milling Pattern, said to help maximize spin on softer shots where the ball doesn’t go as deep into the grooves. The position of the radial milling pattern is intended to help golfers better identify the sweetspot for better strikes.

Progressive groove shapes are CNC milled to optimise performance for each wedge loft. The weaker lofts feature wider, shallower grooves, and the stronger lofts feature narrower, deeper grooves to deliver consistent spin.

The Cobra Connect, Powered by Arccos system features electronically enabled Golf Pride Tour Velvet grips that work in conjunction with the Arccos Caddie app to give users the ability to track their wedge stats, and learn their tendencies so they can practice more effectively.

The King MIM Wedge is offered in 50, 52, 54, 56, 58 and 60°lofts, all in the Versatile Grind, which provides additional toe-relief for optimal versatility. They are on sale now with an RRP of £119.

This game-improver iron is aimed at mid-to high-handicappers seeking more distance, as well as forgiveness on off-centre strikes.

Key technology

The Speedback shaping has allowed more mass to be added low and wide on the heel and toe. When combined with up to 33g of tungsten in the 4-to 7-irons, the MOI has increased by up to ten per cent, creating more stability for improvements in ball speed, distance, forgiveness and accuracy on longer approaches.

Lie angles have been modified in the One Length irons, while wider soles in the 4- to 6-irons aid a higher launch. Also, the use of three different KBS shaft weights through the set helps create more consistent performance. Cobra Connect, powered by Arccos, comprises electronically enabled grips that give users the ability to track their performance via a smartphone app.

GM Review

The King F9 is noticeably squarer from the rear and has a wider sole over the King F8, although a similar amount comes into contact with the ground.

In the mid and long irons, the back of the sole is visible at address, which may deter some. There’s also a lighter finish compared to King F8 and marginally less offset.

The new King F9 gave us, on average, 1mph more ball speed with the same club speed, leading to 2-3 yard-longer carries than the King F8 on a very similar trajectory. Launch went up and spin came down slightly, changes in performance we liked to see for a distance iron.

The fact the King F9 Speedback represents only a marginal improvement over the King F8 is a testament to how good that iron is. That said, the gains in forgiveness were more apparent, specifically the ball speed and accuracy preservation on strikes away from the sweetspot.

These irons feel explosive and look very inviting to hit behind the ball. The improved One Length set configuration will appeal to those looking for better consistency, while the Cobra Connect shot-tracking system adds significant value.

Cobra King F9 Speedback Driver Review

The Cobra King F9 Speedback driver is packed full of technology said to assist with enhancing clubhead speed, ball speed and forgiveness. You can read all about that here.

We tested the driver in the Project X HZRDUS 6.5, one of the stock shaft offerings, after a brief fitting session.

The looks of this driver at address will divide opinion. There’s a lot going, for us it appears quite busy, but the various elements have been added in a way that aren’t overly distracting.

It’s long from front-to-back and a little more triangular in shape than most other modern drivers you'll find on the market.

The first thing that strikes you is how easy this club feels to swing fast. At 45.5”the shaft isn’t particularly excessive in length, nor was it lightweight.

The feel was firm, powerful and solid, regardless of where you strike the ball on the face. There’s quite a low-pitched ‘thud’ sound at impact that indicates power and it feels light and easy to swing.

From the off in 9° and the low setting (14g weight in the front) the numbers impressed. Ball speeds were pushing 156mph (our typical average at the time was 154mph) with low spin and high launch producing carries in excess of 275 yards on average.

Thinking we could get more out of it, we knocked the loft down to 8° and sure enough our ball speed went up slightly and spin reduced, generating average carries of a 280 yards, with one shot carrying 286 yards.

This consistently high ball speed was unusual, where did it come from? Interestingly, our clubhead speed had also increased to nearly 110mph on average.

Yes, it has increased from where were last year (around 106 mph) but testing with a competitor driver on the same day we were averaging 108mph. This would suggest the redesigned crown shaping and 360Aero trips on the King F9 Speedback are doing their job at reducing aerodynamic drag.

To assess the adjustability, we switched the 2g and 14g weights around and the results were even more interesting. As you can see above, our ball speed jumped up again to 157.3mph, with one shot flying off at 159mph.

Even though launch stayed the same, the spin did go up by around 400 rpm, although this could partly be because the strikes were slightly lower on the face. Carry distance in this setting was reassuringly similar, albeit on a slightly higher flight with less run on landing.

Golf Monthly reader Andy Wright was one of our chosen duo for this year’s bigger and better COBRA Smarter Ways to Lower Scores project. Andy, a 7-handicapper from Cheshire, had his sights set firmly on category 1.

Andy enjoyed a full COBRA Golf driver-to-wedge custom fitting at Silvermere in Surrey in March along with in-depth briefings on how to best use the incredible COBRA Connect shot-tracking system in association with Arccos. This was available throughout the bag this year for the first time, allowing Andy to analyse and better understand all areas of his game.

Along the way, Andy played countless competitive and social rounds and got to tee it up in two EuroPro Tour Pro-Ams courtesy of COBRA Golf at Frilford Heath, from where he reported back on progress so far mid-season, and then Caversham Heath, where he gave us another progress report in the video below...

Now 2018 is over and it’s time to find out how Andy fared with his new COBRA clubs, the COBRA Connect system and his quest to get down to Category 1…

On his COBRA clubs… With a full new set, I wasn’t too surprised that my handicap crept up a little initially, but after a couple of lessons, I won a two-day event with friends at Mottram Hall. My goal was to get down to 5 and I thought I had done that when, having reached 5.5, I chipped stone dead on the final hole one day for a closing birdie and sub-handicap round. Then, to my dismay, CSS came down a shot for the only time this tear to deny me. I ended the year on 5.8, so close but no cigar!

My golf in general has really improved, though, due to the COBRA Smarter Ways to Lower Scores experience. Last year I was regularly shooting in the 80s and occasionally dipping into the 70s, whereas this year I’m regularly in the 70s with the occasional bad knock in the low 80s.

I’ve always struggled with fairway woods but my COBRA King F8 set to 16˚ has been great off both fairway and tee. With my driver I’ve struggled with a two-way miss this season, and the COBRA Connect stats show that that is what has been holding me back a little.

On COBRA Connect… Despite not making it down to 5, my COBRA Connect with Arccos handicap - which includes all rounds, not just competition rounds – is currently 3.9 after 53 rounds this year, so I know I can get there.

I used the COBRA Connect data a lot this summer to manage my way round, and this proved invaluable as the hard, fast ground increased the importance of understanding carry distances off the tee and into greens.

My putting handicap with COBRA Connect is +1.6, so clearly there are no problems there, while approach play is showing at 3.8. Driving has been the issue (11.9) so if I could find ways to improve that, then I know that everything else required to get down to category 1 is already there.

On his COBRA clubs… Unfortunately, my official handicap is still 24, although this is down to me playing more social golf and only a handful of competitions. Confidence and lack of consistency are still my major downfalls, but on the plus side, I’ve only been playing for two years and I know this project has been hugely beneficial to my game overall. I’ve seen a vast improvement in my ball-striking, distances and gapping, which is without doubt down to my new clubs!

Previously most rounds were in the mid to high 90s with a few 100+ in there. Now, it’s typically low to mid 90s with a couple of sub-90s in there. The COBRA King F8 3-wood has been my favourite club. I also love the COBRA King F8 driver, which I struggled with originally but have learnt to love. When I’m hitting it well, it really goes!

The COBRA King F8 One-length iron concept has proved ideal and I think my iron play has shown the greatest improvement in consistency although there is still much to do. If I could piece it all together, I'd have no problem reaching 18 or below, but I suppose that's golf!

On COBRA Connect… The COBRA Connect data has been very useful, highlighting the weaker areas of my game that I would not otherwise have recognised. I’ve then been able to work on specific things in lessons or on the range. The club distance data has also helped by providing actual figures on how far I can hit each club, so I can then make informed decisions rather than guessing.

My COBRA Connect Arccos handicap is now showing as 18.6 (down from 24.3). Driving and approach play are my biggest weaknesses (my driving handicap is 26.5), while chipping and putting are almost into single figures, so I know where most work is needed for further improvement.

Known for packing performance without the punchy prices, Cobra is at it again with the launch of the King F9 Speedback range of woods and irons, which replaces the King F8 range. It is heavily inspired by racing cars and airplane wings, which also use aerodynamics to maximise speed.

The King F9 Speedback driver arguably steals the show by managing to combine a low CG with advanced aerodynamics to create a fast, high-launching and low-spinning driver for a range of abilities.

Carrying over from the previous range is the CNC Milled face, said to be consistently hotter than traditional hand-polished faces thanks to more precise bulge and roll properties.

This results in improved bulge-and-roll curvatures and a face that is 3 per cent thinner and 10 per cent lighter.

Cobra has tweaked the design of the face, not only tilting the bulge and roll axis but also making the face design progressive by loft to minimise gear effect that negatively impacts launch and spin on misses for different swing speeds.

The reduced aerodynamic drag comes from a combination of softer edges at the top and bottom of the face, a raised crown that is higher at the back as well as strategically-placed ‘PWR’ ridges and 360Aero trips, all helping you maximize club speed.

The low and deep CG and resulting higher launch and ball speed comes from the ultralight carbon fibre crown that wraps around some of the body, saving 10 grams of weight compared to a titanium crown driver, helped by a titanium body part that positions the rear sole weight lower to the ground.

To fine tune ball flight there are interchangeable 14g and 2g sole weights as well as the adjustable MyFly hosel but through a custom order, additional 6g, 10g and 18g weight options are available to produce even more optimal launch conditions and flight.

The King F9 Speedback fairway wood features the CNC Milled face for the first time, as well as the popular Baffler rails, which become progressively taller as the loft increases.

Golfers can choose from the standard model, which has a fixed 15g tungsten weight in the back, or the smaller Tour version, which has a 12g weight at the front for a more penetrating flight.

You'll notice a smaller third rail in front of the weight on the standard model, which ensures the rear sole weight doesn't interfere with the turf and effect the strike through impact.

The King F9 Speedback hybrid features a low and back 15g weight to improve performance. It has been made a little larger than previous iterations to increase forgiveness and has a straighter leading edge for easier alignment as well as progressive Baffler rails to improve turf interaction from different lies.

The woods are available in black/yellow or avalanche, which is between white and grey also has a satin matte finish on the front of the crown. They hybrid comes in black only as well as One Length.

Last but by no means least are the King F9 Speedback Irons, Cobra’s most forgiving to date thanks to added mass placed low and back using a belt of steel that wraps around the back of the iron.

The Speedback shaping has allowed more mass to be added low and wide on the heel and toe compared to a traditional iron. When combined with up to 33 grams of Tungsten in the 4-7 irons, the MOI has increased by up to 10 per cent in the long irons, creating more stability for improvements in ball speed, distance, forgiveness, and accuracy.

This lower and deeper CG maximises ball speed, launch and carry distance. Lie angles have been modified in the One Length irons, while wider soles in the 4-6 irons aid a higher launch. Use of three different KBS shaft weights through the set helps create more consistent performance.

The irons come with the Cobra Connect, Powered By Arccos system, which features electronically enabled grips that work in conjunction with the Arccos Caddie app to give users the ability to track their stats and improve their game. Golfers who purchase a Cobra 6-piece (or greater) iron or combo set will receive complimentary screw in sensors, or smart, Cobra Connect grips, to utilise on the rest of the clubs in their bag, including one putter sensor (valued at £250).

The Cobra King F9 Speedback range is on sale from the end of January, 2019. The RRPs are as follows: Driver (9°, 10.5° and 12° adjustable) - £349 in a high-launch/mid-spin Helium 50 shaft; a mid-launch/mid spin Fujikura Atmos Tour Spec Blue 6 shaft; a mid-launch/low spin Project X Hzrdus Smoke 60 shaft or the Fujikura Atmos Tour Spec Black 7 shaft.

This iron is aimed at mid-handicap golfers looking for distance and stability with a modern look.

Key Technology

As well as a thinner and stronger forged 4140 stainless steel face for increased ball speed, a carbon fibre medallion dampens vibration to provide a softer, solid feel. High-density tungsten weights in the heel and toe of the clubhead mean the GC is lowered and centred for added forgiveness. The shafts feature progressive weighting, increasing in 3g increments from lightest in the long-irons. This promotes a higher launch and more speed in the long-irons, while helping accuracy and control in the short-irons. Cobra Connect Smart Sensors embedded in the grips automatically track shots.

Verdict

Pleasing looks were backed up by solid performance. With a 7-iron loft of 30°, we didn’t quite get the carry distance we were expecting, perhaps because the flight was a touch low, and when you pick the club up for the first time it does feel quite head heavy. But once you’re used to it, putting a repeatable swing on becomes second nature and the benefit of the stability and forgiveness is worth the subtle adjustment.

Consistency is one of this iron’s strongest features, alongside the looks and the ability to track your performance via Cobra Connect, which we’ve found to be especially useful in analysing common misses and shot patterns. Buy the iron set and you get extra sensors to add to the rest of your clubs, adding even more value.

Looks

A generous topline has been combined with minimal offset in a pleasing shape. The white bottom score line against the darker finish makes the clubhead very easy to align.

Performance

We found the 7-iron provided ample distance with fairly low spin on a mid trajectory, with carry distances reassuringly consistent.

Cobra has unveiled a new line of players irons designed in tandem with PGA Tour staffer Rickie Fowler.

The new King Forged CB/MB progressive iron set that flows from a forgiving players cavity-back (CB) shape in the 4-6 irons to a traditional muscle-back (MB) shape in the 7-PW and is designed to deliver more playability compared to the full MB proto set Fowler currently has in the bag.

The CB design (above) in the 4-6 irons features a new muscle cavity that helps maintain a workable trajectory and soft feel with added forgiveness on mishits. The traditional MB shape (below) in the 7-PW is designed for ultimate precision, shot-shaping and scoring. The irons undergo a 5-step forging process that delivers precise shaping, a more refined grain structure, and superior feel demanded by the world’s best players.

Cobra has unveiled its lightest, easiest to hit collection of woods and irons ever for the slower swing speed player.

Headlining the new F-Max Superlite range is the driver, which has been re-engineered with a 6-gram lighter clubhead, a 5-gram lighter 45g Superlite shaft and a 7-gram lighter Lamkin REL 360 grip. This yields 18 grams in total weight-savings, bringing to the total overall weight to 287 grams to ensure the fastest club and ball speed performance for moderate swing speeds.

Offered in both offset and straight neck hosel designs, the Cobra F-MAX Superlite driver also features an oversized address profile for added forgiveness with a subtle crown alignment feature to assist with aim as well as a thin forged 6-4 Titanium face insert with E9 Technology, a variable thickness face structure that enhances ball speed and distance on hits across the face.

Finally, an internal weight pad strategically positions weight low, back and towards the heel to deliver higher launching trajectories and straighter ball flights.

Cobra's new F-MAX Superlight Fairways boast the same weight-saving benefits as the driver, but feature a low profile, shallow face design using high-strength forged 455 stainless steel to enhance ball speed and launch across the face from a variety of turf conditions.

The F-MAX Superlite Hybrids featured in the combo sets are also available to purchase as stand-alone options.  They feature an internal weight pad strategically positions weight low, back and heelward and an offset hosel design to help golfers who struggle with a slice. They also have a crown alignment design to assist with aim.

Last but not least are the F-MAX Superlite Irons, which are 16 grams lighter than the previous version to help achieve the fastest club and ball speed possible for golfers with moderate swing speeds.

Progressive hosel lengths strategically position the CG (Centre of Gravity) in each iron to produce the desired launch and trajectory. Shorter hosels in the long irons lower the CG to promote higher launch and distance, while taller hosels in the short iron wedges raise the CG to promote lower, controlled trajectories.

Weight is positioned in the low heel and low toe areas to increase forgiveness and stability on off-centre hits for straighter, more accurate approach shots while a nickel, two-tone chrome plating provides a premium, durable finish.

The F-MAX Superlite Driver has an RRP of £249 and is ) and is available lofts 9.5°, 10.5° and 11.5° in offset or straight neck hosel. The F-MAX Superlite Fairways have an RRP of £179) in lofts 16°, 20° and 23°. The F-MAX Superlite Hybrids have an RRP of £159 and range from 19°-32.5°.

The F-MAX Superlite Irons are available in a variety of set options. Men’s Irons (£499 (s) £599 (g) ) and – 7-piece, stock 5-PW, GW set features a KBS Superlite steel shaft in stiff and regular flex; a graphite offering is also available, utilising a COBRA Superlite 55 gram shaft in stiff and regular and a 50 gram shaft in lite flex.

Cobra Golf has introduced its new King Forged Tec Black irons. They are said to be longer, feel  softer, come in a new dark finish and will be available in both a traditional Variable or One Length from April 6th, 2018.

Like Cobra's other 2018 equipment introductions, the King Forged Tec Black irons will feature the Cobra Connect, Powered by Arccos System providing Tour level analytics that help players gain insight into their game.

The King Forged Tec Black irons feature an all-new Forged 4140 Stainless Steel face that is thinner and stronger to provide improved deflection and increased ball speed across the face.

In addition, the all new Technology Enhanced Cavity (TEC) features a 100% carbon fibre medallion that damps vibrations which is said to provide a softer, yet more solid feel during impact.

Cobra has introduced its new King Black and King Black One Length Wedges, which both feature a sleek Dimonized Black Metal (DBM) finish for added durability. They also incorporate Cobra’s patented Progressive Spin Technology, delivering a blend of versatility and precision around the greens.

The King Black Wedges utilise an 8620 Carbon Steel construction and DBM finish results in a premium black satin look that diffuses light and lasts longer than any other black finish.

This is the same finish used on Rickie Fowler’s Tour irons for the past few years. The King Black Wedges will also feature Cobra Connect technology, working in conjunction with the Arccos 360 mobile application, to provide golfers with detailed stats and data that helps them dial in their wedge game, track their performance and improve their scoring faster.

The new Cobra King F8 range of woods and irons boasts a number of unique technologies and innovations, said to help every ability of golfer hit longer and straighter shots.

Cobra King F8 and F8+ Drivers

Headlining the range are the King F8 and F8+ drivers, which for the first time feature a multi-directional CNC Milled Forged titanium face. This helps achieve precise face thicknesses, tighter tolerances and improved bulge-and-roll curvatures on a face that is now three per cent thinner and 10 per cent lighter for maximum ball speed with accuracy.

New 360^o Aero Technology comprises a number of aerodynamic ‘trips’ made from a lightweight polymer, strategically positioned on the front of the sole and crown to reduce drag for increased clubhead speed.

REVIEW: Cobra King F8 Drivers

An ultralight, five-ply carbon fibre crown saves discretionary weight to move the CG lower and deeper for higher trajectories and increased forgiveness, assisted by the E9 variable thickness face and elliptical pattern Sweet Zone, which creates more hot spots away from the centre of the face.

The King F8 features a larger profile and adjustable 2g and 12g weights that can be positioned either in the back or heel of the sole for forgiveness and launch or draw bias. The F8+ has a shallower profile, lower loft range and front-to-back adjustability with the 2g and 12g weights on the sole.

GEAR TEST: Cobra King F8+ v King F7+ Drivers

The drivers now come in just one colour, called Nardo Grey, a trendy colour from the automotive industry. The RRP will be £329 and the three stock shafts are the MRC Tensei CK Blue 50g; Aldila NV 2KXV Blue 60 and the Aldila NV 2KXV Green 65.

The King F8 fairway woods and King F8 hybrids continue to feature the impressive Baffler rail system on the sole to improve turf interaction.

These progressive rails have been moved closer together to provide more leading edge bounce, helping the club stay lower to the ground for more consistent launch from a variety of lies, and also centre the CG more for enhanced forgiveness on off-centre hits.

They also boast the same 360˚ Aero trips as the driver that maximize club speed and the fairway also has the 5-ply carbon crown that creates more efficient clubhead weighting.

A new addition for 2017 is the One Length version of the King F8 hybrid, which can now be incorporated into any One Length iron set.

It is black to distinguish it from the nardo grey of the standard length hybrid and features an upright lie angle, heavier head weight and lower CG to help golfers who struggle to hit their One Length long irons up in the air.

As part of Cobra’s updated TECFLO Progressive Set Construction, more of the irons (now 4-7) are hollow to boost performance, moving to cavity backs in the mid irons and speciality wedges with the Versatile Grind in the higher lofts.

REVIEW: Cobra King F8 Irons

In the F8 One Length irons, improved trajectories were achieved using progressive hosel lengths paired with wider sole widths in the 4-6 irons to lower the CG in the long irons for higher-flying trajectories, and raise the CG in the scoring irons and wedges to promote lower, more controlled trajectories.

Every King F8 and F8+ club now comes standard with Cobra Connect, utlising an Arccos 360 Sensor embedded in the grip to access performance tracking via a Smartphone app and GPS distances.

Golfers who purchase a standard 7-piece set of F8 irons will also receive additional Arccos 360 screw-in sensors to round out their 14-club set, ensuring that consumers have a fully connected experience.

The King F8 range of woods and irons will be on sale from Feb 2^nd, 2018.

Cobra King F8 Hybrid Review

Cobra has made the same improvements to its Baffler rails on the hybrid as it has the fairway, moving them closer together to make them more effective, but also centering the CG a little more to improve clubhead stability, feel and distance.

The variable length hybrid is distinguished by its grey colouring, both on the sole and crown, which matches the other clubs in the King F8 range, while the One Length hybrid has a more traditional black colour scheme.

Both look inviting to hit and are pleasing in shape and size without looking chunky. The polymer trips of the 360Aero on the front of the crown do catch your eye initially, but lets not dwell on that too much.

The normal hybrid performed really well in dry ball GC2 testing off the range mat but it really comes into its own from bad lies in the rough. The rails genuinely assist in getting the club down and through the grass quickly to excavate the ball and get it airborne with the minimum of fuss.

GC2 data suggested the 19˚model we tested wasn’t especially high launching, with a launch angle of 14.9 peaking at 35 yards, but the average carry of 226 yards was more than enough and they were consistently around that number, which was pleasing to see. They missed left a little more than I would have liked, but many hybrids on today's market have this tendency.

Sadly, the same cannot be said of the One Length hybrid. It must be said – I am not a One Length iron set user, so the feeling of using a hybrid that was 7-iron in length was always going to be strange to me – it was a lot like using a junior club. Sure enough, I couldn’t keep my shots on the golf course (see below) – they were ducking straight left with ease and nothing I tried would straighten out the flight.

If you’re a One Length iron user, the transition from long iron to hybrid should be a seamless one with the added benefits of a hybrid over a longer, like forgiveness and general ease of ball striking, should make them an improved choice. As a normal iron set user, we just couldn’t get on with them.

Cobra King F8 Irons Review

A modern but simple looking club, the King F8 iron is built primarily for distance. Now, the 4-7 iron within the set is hollow like a hybrid, providing faster ball speeds and we certainly experienced that in our testing.

It’s large down by the ball without looking especially game improver. The thick topline and offset inspire confidence for inconsistent ball strikers that help is at hand and clip a few balls away you certainly feel that you haven’t got to strike the sweetspot to achieve good distance.

Much of the distance will come from the lofting, construction and the tweak in CG positioning. The 7-iron has a loft of 29.5˚, which is still strong by modern standards, and the CG has been lowered through a shortening of the hosel.

Out of the middle, the ball flies off like a rocket. The face feels hot like a hybrid, which is great for distance, but sounds more like an iron and it was surprisingly consistent. Our average carry distance on the GC2 was in excess of 183 yards with shots ranging from 181 to 187 yards. The impressive yardage is great for golfers who always seem to come up short of the green on approach shots.

The spin was a touch low at 4800 rpm but not surprising given the low loft and the iron had no trouble in launching the ball, getting it up at nearly 19˚ and peaking at 37 yards. You’ll notice how we also didn’t hit many shots offline, such was the forgiveness of the face on a wide area.

The short irons feel softer and less explosive than the longer irons and the addition of the Versatile Grind on the speciality wedges should appeal to lower handicaps who like to be more creative around the green.

Improvements have also been made in the One Length set through adjustment of the hosel lengths and use of flighted shafts, which means golfers should see more consistent trajectories. The One Length hybrid is a curious addition and while the benefits of a hybrid over a long iron should be obvious, we didn’t get on with it as well as expected as you can see in our King F8 hybrid review.

Cobra King F8 Drivers Review

The King F8 is aimed at a range of abilities seeking enhanced all-round performance as well as the option of a more draw-biased flight while the F8+ will suit a lower handicap range and/or faster swing speeds because of its low spin and launch setting, lower loft range and smaller address profile.

Key Technology A new CNC Milled titanium face produces more consistent bulge and roll properties for improved distance and accuracy. 360˚ Aero on the front part of the crown and sole reduce aerodynamic drag for more clubhead speed while adjustable sole weights alter launch, spin and shot shape.

How we Tested We collected data from both models on our GC2 launch monitor using premium golf balls and also put them in play on the course.

Looks Large profile with a traditional shape boosts confidence. The polymer trips that make up the 360˚ Aero, along with the carbon fibre behind, make it a busy looking clubhead but the contrast between the black face and 'nardo' grey crown front section highlights face angle alignment.

GEAR TEST: Cobra King F8+ v King F7+ Drivers

Forgiveness Arguably this driver’s strongest suit. It feel significantly more stable and faster generally, especially on off-centre hits, than previous Cobra drivers and the launch monitor data backs up this theory with the distance between the shortest and longest hit smaller than expected.

Ball Flight The F8 is still a high launching driver, which will suit mid-to-slow swing speeds, while faster swingers will call upon the lower loft range of the F8+ model, along with the front weight option, to bring the flight down to a playable level although it was still a touch high, peaking at 43 yards. Low spin levels meant the ball didn’t climb too high during the flight and helps maximise carry distance.

Performance The average carry distance of 282 yards is one of the longest we’ve experienced in recent years. We can’t tell for sure if this was down to how we were swinging on the day, nor do we know which technology contributed most to it, but the numbers speak for themselves.

Switching to the F8+ model, with the heavier 12g weight in the front of the head, increased ball speed by 3mph, carry distance by two yards and brought the ball flight down but it was interesting that spin was similarly low for both (around 2100 rpm) with the F8 model launching much higher but also providing a tighter dispersion generally.

In fact, the Cobra King F8 was extremely accurate. Much of this accuracy, and the extra launch and flight, could have been down to having the heavier weight in the back of the head, which increases MOI (resistance to twisting) and dynamic lofting.

Key Technology

Sitting alongside the more compact, workable and lower spinning King F8+ model, this standard King F8 fairway is designed to provide maximum launch and forgiveness.

Cobra's Dual Baffler Rail system now has tighter-spaced rails with a centre of gravity (CG) centred between them. This design reduces twisting for forgiveness and helps maintain head speed upon contact with the turf, so your heavy strikes aren't as punishing.

You will also spot aero strips in the picture below around the perimeter of the face. These help to reduce drag and in turn increase head speed for more distance, while a larger address profile also increases forgiveness.

For the first time, Cobra has also introduced a carbon fibre crown that is nearly 13g lighter than the previous steel version that, alongside a back sole weight, moves the CG even lower to aid a high launch from a variety of lies.

Rounding out technologies is a forged steel face insert with a variable thickness face construction that creates more hot spots away from the centre to enhance distance on heel and toe strikes, plus the adjustable MyFly8 hosel returns with eight loft settings in each of the three models below.

Cobra King F8 Fairway Wood Review

The first thing you'll notice about this fairway wood is the look of the club. With only black, white and grey used, it has the feeling of a more serious fairway than perhaps the more colourful Cobra offerings of the past.

The carbon fibre crown certainly delivers a really premium look akin to the TaylorMade M1 or Callaway Epic fairway woods, but unfortunately the light grey detailing around the edges slightly hindered the overall look in our opinion.

Looking at the crown image above, you'll also notice the aero strips and these, combined with the weight savings, certainly helped us to achieve some impressive GC2 launch monitor numbers as you'll see below.

Our 10-handicap tester saw his ball speed increase by 3mph and his spin reduce by around 700rpm on average. This combination gave him an overall carry gain of 10 yards, which puts the Cobra King F8 fairway wood into the category of being a must try club.

It also flew on a nice piercing flight and felt very powerful off the face, while the stock shaft - an Aldila NV 2KXV Blue - felt stable throughout our day of testing.

Trying it across a range of lies it was also clear that the Dual Baffler Rail system does its job in making traditionally tough shots more playable. This will be a big bonus for every golfer from the tour pro right down to the beginner.

Cobra has revealed its lightest, easiest to hit woods and irons ever made in the form of the new super-game improver F-MAX family. Within the range are men's and women's drivers, fairway woods, hybrids and irons in both variable and one length versions.

“When it comes to this category, it can’t be overstated how important lightweight construction is to this category of player,” said Tom Olsavsky, VP of R&D for COBRA Golf. “With the creation of F-MAX we have focused on the concept that lighter means easier to hit and we have gone to great lengths to ensure that even our components deliver superiority when it comes to reduced weight.”

The Cobra F-MAX Driver benefits from a Superlite 50 shaft which promotes improved clubhead speed and greater distance for players with moderate swing speeds. Additionally, a larger, Lamkin REL 360 midsize grip improves comfort and consistency off the tee.

In terms of clubhead technology, a Forged Ti-6-4 Titanium Face insert delivers more speed and a larger Sweet Zone for better distance on mishits. Internal weighting positioned near the heel promotes a more forgiving, higher, straighter ball-flight while a new crown alignment feature  makes it easy to align the clubhead at address.

Golfers have the choice of using an offset hosel that creates higher trajectory with draw bias to help eliminate slices, or a straight neck hosel for a more traditional look at address and more workability.

The F-MAX Drivers have an RRP of £229 and are available in 10.5^°and 11.5^° for men, and 15^° for women and in offset versions for both.

The F-MAX Fairways (RRP £169) and hybrids (RRP £149) utilise many of same weight saving and comfort increasing technologies as the Driver, namely an ultralight configuration and larger grips as well as a Forged 455 Stainless Steel Face Insert, Back/Heel CG weighting, the Crown Alignment Feature and an offset hosel design.

The F-Max Fairways are available in both right and left-hand in 16^°, 20° and 23^° of loft for men, and 19 ^o, 23 ^o and 27 ^o of loft for women. The F-MAX Hybrids are available in RH/LH in 19^°, 22^°, 25^°, 28^° and 31^° of loft for men, and 23.5^°, 26.5^°, 29.5^° and 32.5^° of loft for women.

The theme of lightweight shafts and oversize grips extends into the irons within the F-MAX range, which includes one-length irons in the super-game improvement category for the first time.

To boost performance even further, a lower profile clubhead design moves the centre-of-gravity low and back for improved launch, while the deeper undercut cavity creates more face flex for maximum ball speeds on off-centre hits.

A thinner 17-4 stainless steel construction in the long irons (4i-7i) provides improved speed and distance while a softer 431 stainless steel in the short irons (8i-SW) yield ultra-soft feel and precision.

Weight is strategically positioned near the heel to promote a straighter, higher ball-flight and a progressive offset hosel creates higher trajectory with added draw bias to eliminate slices resulting in more consistently accurate shots.

To top it off, a new nickel chrome plating provides beautiful aesthetics and increased durability for great looking, longer lasting irons.

The Cobra F-MAX One Length irons, distinguished by the blue and red cosmetics, feature all the same technologies with the simplicity of a single length set make-up. They have been re-engineered to match 7-iron weighting throughout the set, and are designed with optimised constructions for more consistent ball striking, accuracy and distance gapping from long irons to wedges.

Cobra Golf has revealed the ideal complement to its King Oversized Irons in the form of the new King Oversized Hybrid. The oversized profile coupled with improved performance technologies deliver an easy to hit long iron replacement built for distance and forgiveness.

The King OS Hybrid utilises a wider, oversized clubhead shape to improve confidence at address and provide high launch and maximum MOI for a straighter, extremely forgiving ball-flight. Further enhancing the perfect blend of forgiveness and power, the club blends Internal Tungsten Weighting to strategically position the CG low and deep with a TeXtreme Carbon Fiber Crown that saves 8g of weight compared to traditional steel hybrid crowns for higher launching, lower spinning shots from a variety of lies.

The King OS Hybrid features Cobra’s propriety MyFly8 with Smart Pad adjustability, helping golfers to manage desired trajectory and fine tune launch conditions to maximise distance, while keeping the clubface square at address regardless of loft setting.

Will Suit Golfers looking to dial in their ball flight on a budget.

Looks Whether you opt for black, blue or silver, the King F7 driver has a large, confidence-inspiring profile at address with lots of loft on show and subtle graphics. The shiny finish may produce a little sun glare, something that’s not a problem on the F7+ thanks to a matte finish on top.

Performance In our view the King F7 is ideal for the improving, every day golfer who doesn’t want to shell out half his life savings for a driver that performs.

The adjustability works and provides enough combinations for golfers to really maximize their potential through increasing or decreasing loft, launch and spin as well as adding in some draw bias if required.

Faster swingers will likely require the F7+ model, which provides a little less spin and has lower loft settings to assist a more suitable ball flight, but we experienced a trade off with forgiveness when making the switch.

The King F7 model seemed to be much more forgiving, generally hitting the ball straight while the F7+ provided more distance but without the consistent accuracy.

The price reflects the very slight drop off in overall performance compared with top-end premium drivers but for most golfers, the total package will be one that provides good value for money thanks to the vast array of adjustability and colour options.

Cobra King F7 Fairway Wood Review

The King F7 fairway wood utilises Cobra’s iconic Baffler Rail System - progressive rail heights that are strategically engineered to be shallower in the 3-4 woods become thicker up into the 7-8 woods to assist launch and ball striking from every lie.

The front of the rails improve turf forgiveness while the back of the rails help the club glide out of the turf more smoothly. Our testing confirmed the positive effect the rails have on ball striking, especially when the ball is sitting down in the semi-rough.

The fact the King F7 fairway comes equipped with 20-gram and 3-gram adjustable weights means that golfers can tailor the ball flight to the situation they will most likely use the club out on the course.

If you tend to use your fairway wood mostly off the tee, you’ll probably prefer having the heavier weight at the front to reduce spin and increase overall distance.

If you envisage you’ll use it mostly from the fairway, and thus take full advantage of the excellent rail technology, then you may want the heavier weight back to increase launch, spin and overall stopping power on the green.

We tested a 14.5° model off the deck on the grass range at Red Tail Golf Club with new, two-piece range balls. The fact we were hitting from grass, using range balls and had the heavy weight in the back setting (the setting we’d opt for as this club really comes into its own hitting into greens) means the data isn’t directly comparable with other fairway wood reviews we’ve done recently, like the new TaylorMade M1 fairway and the Callaway Big Bertha Epic fairways, but in spite of the testing environment the King F7 performed admirably.

You can also dial in your ball flight and distance using the adjustable loft on the hosel, making it one of the most versatile fairway woods on the market.

The average carry was 230 yards – more than respectable – while launch and spin also provided a nice combination of distance, a strong trajectory and stopping power.
